It’s City – Oh My Goodness.

Good morning all.

Tonight we play the Manchester City Globetrotters in the Carabao Cup quarter-final at The Home of Football.

Under normal circumstance this would be a mouth-watering encounter, but these are anything but normal times. We are in the midst of a run of form that is the worst in living memory for most of the Arsenal fanbase. I know City would visit us expecting to win no matter what form we were in, but they must expect to brush us aside tonight. I don’t joke when I say I can’t remember when we last played well enough that we might have a chance. They are unlikely to play their best eleven, but their 2nd best 11 is so much better than our best that it’s not even a comparison.

However, all is not lost, stranger things have happened, freak result regularly pop up, but make no mistake, for us to go through we would need the freakiest of freak results. Look, it’s not impossible, we did get a freak result in the FA cup semi just a few months ago. We can hope, so let’s do that? Hope! Hope for the best. Hope for a Christmas miracle.

Normally team selection and set up is difficult, but today it’s impossible for me to even hazard a guess, so I won’t bother.

It would be a good night to throw Ozil into the mix, Arteta could blame him instesd of the maths.

Personally I would play all the youngsters that are on the fringes of the first 11 and the likes of Saliba. However, even then it would mean allowing them to play something other than the PLAY BY NUMBERS rubbish that Arteta churns out week after week. And that won’t happen either.

Try to enjoy the game , IT’S CHRISTMAAAAAAAAAAAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pedantic George.

  1. Up until about three years ago for almost of all of this decade City vs Arsenal contests were the best football matches in the league in this last decade. Played at the highest level a treat for football lovers all over the world.

    Trust the process eh?
    Change the culture?
    Cut off your Rodger.
What could go wrong with such a path?

Our only solace is the many ****s that leeched off this club during the good times have been exposed as: utter ****s. But we knew that anyway.

Eds just to follow up, this is why me and Gee were horrified by Kia talking on behalf of the Arsenal. The club’s days as a Football club are now over. Downgrading Ramsey for Ceballos, Martinez for that chucker in goal: that is the process. I hope the WOBs will enjoy the fruits of their labour.

  2. City aren’t great at the moment so there’s definitely a chance.
Mikel has to go for all the cups at the moment just to keep his job. It’s not worth keeping players back for the league as we are more likely to lose that one against chelski than tonight.
It’s seems like Arsene was a million years ago and going forward it is difficult to see the light at the end of this very dark tunnel.
My only solace at the moment is the lads who have come through the academy are all playing well COYG.

  3. I was also wondering whether Ozil could play, unless the EPL squads cover the league cup as well.

Arteta’s slagging off his players in public as “victims” is hardly likely to improve the atmosphere.

I hope the club are preparing now because it looks like Arteta is refusing to make any changes.to his vision of how we should play.

  5. If this lot found such a gem, they’d tell him to duck off if didn’t want to work with their favourite business partners (please refer to the previous decade at the Arsenal).

they would ignore such a gem of even if it had just bit them on the Arsenal.
Bielsa has been available this whole time…

I’m seriously hoping that Wenger and some investors from Wakanda (yes the made up not real nation of Wakanda) come in to buy out this sorry hopeless mob.
That’s the hope that keeps me going!

went behind after 2 minutes, due to some awful defending, then were really out of sorts for most of the half, Elneny and Mustafi booked, then Martinelli crossed in and Lacazette scored and the game was much more even from there on.

  21. We have scored with our only shot on goal. If this is going to continue we need to park the bus and counter. I did not expect us to win (I never do nowadays) but the team has to be able to trouble the other teams goalie. Nice goal by Laca though.

  22. FT: Arsenal 1-4 Man City

a night Runarsson will want to forget, very much at fault for 2 of the goals. Another of the city goals were offside. Our luck is really out at the moment.
Martinelli injured is a major concern too.
Kolasinac, Cedric and Mustafi looked second rate too, as once again did Eleney and Ceballos.
Pepe had little impact when he came on. Smith-Rowe looked good. Lacazette got a goal, hopefully that will kick start him again.

How many more defeats can Arteta oversee before he loses the backing of KSE

Chelsea up next, on Saturday, followed by Brighton and WBA, with Newcastle in the cup, then we have Crystal Palace and Newcastle again.

One less thing to retain hope for.
Quite enjoyed the first half performance.
A lot of effort was there.
    We did deserve our equalizer.
Hope Martinelli’s going to be okay.
MA has basically 2 games to validate himself.
Really hope Sokratis, Kolasinac, and Mustafi move on in January.
Dani Ceballos was really good tonight.
Oh well, on to boxing day VS Chelski.
    Happy holidays Positivistas.

  24. Think of we lose to Brighton WBA Palace and Newcastle, or even lose most of those, I find it inconceivable that KSE won’t panic and act in some way, and I always fear with KSE without Wenger, it might not be in a good way.
No idea who they would bring in, promote Per? PV? TH? Rafa? David Pleat?
doing badly in those games will put us firmly in the relegation places.
Most of the players just dont look motivated for him
There are only so many mistakes that a manager can make at this level
Why did he bring Martinelli back on?

  26. Some bright and spirited moments and flashes of promise from the youngsters. Overall a clear second (no surprises there) and moments that might have gone our way with VAR obviously didn’t (but we were spared a penalty against us too). And if the truth be known it was all pretty much as I expected, though there were a few on the pitch who I wouldn’t be too disappointed never to see again.

  31. Sorry, did someone say Ceballos was good tonight?

Not in the game I watched. He was as awful as he usually is.

Misplaced passes, no constructive passing and achieving absolutely nothing.

Not surprised Real were happy to get rid of him.

ESR did more in the few minutes he was on than Ceballos did in the whole time I was watching.

There is one thing being positive, but that comment went too far.

  32. yeah it is Mandy, I’d be more inclined to keep Arteta.

The transfer window opens in ten days, so do the club back the manager and get in two or three players right at the start of the window, and give Arteta the best possible chance of getting out of this mess. For me there is no point in the Club waiting to late in the window to do business, waiting to see how things are going, not committing to signings in case they decide to sack Arteta if results remain poor. If they have any doubt in Arteta they have to sack him now, get in the new man, spend for him. If they believe in Arteta then they have to make the signings for him as quick as possible. They also have to get rid of the players he does not want, even if that means taking a massive hit on them.

The Club, what am I saying, its KSE, have to shit or get off the pot, back him or sack him, either way do it in double quick time

    Like

  33. If Arteta is to be sacked, his replacement will be likely be decided between the son of a very rich man, an Ex Deloittes consultant, possibly a lawyer and Edu,if he is still there.
    What has this club become?

  34. In the circumstances, tend to agree with you Eduardo 10.31. They will be hoping Partey comes good as well.
But even if they keep Arteta, he looks to me like he is making poor decisions and needs serious , experienced help, and has perhaps been over promoted at this stage of his career….promoting a rookie after 6 months, Ok there was the cup, but what was that all about? its like KSE are desperate or something?

  35. Arteta on Saliba: “He cannot be involved because he’s not in the squad. We made that decision with him and we’ll see what we’re going to do in January. We are talking about it [loan move] yes.”

a very odd answer, as Saliba was eligible to play, he was in the squad v LCFC, and the rules have not changed.
Its clear Arteta does not rate the lad or has had some falling out with him, but once again Arteta is giving an awful explanation, or should I say, not explaining a decision.

Saliba’s mate the LCFC CB Fofana said a while back that Saliba not getting game tiem under Arteta cos he is not an Arteta signing. It really does seem that there may be something to this.

  36. so despite Saliba being named a sub in the earlier round v LCFC we have Arteta claiming tonight that he was not eligible to play in the competition.

  37. Mikel Arteta addressed the assembled media in a virtual post-match press conference following Tuesday’s defeat to Manchester City.

    Here’s what he said:

    on the result…
A really painful moment, again. We started the game by conceding a really early and really soft goal and after that, in this moment, to get through that is obviously difficult. But the players reacted to be fair and they started to grow as the game was moving forwards. We scored a goal, a really good goal and after that I think that we were the better team for the next 25 minutes. But when we had the best moments in the game, we conceded another soft goal and that makes it even harder. But still, we kept going and we had an open situation where we could’ve played Laca through and we missed the pass and then they scored the third goal in an offside position. Obviously after that moment, the game is over.

on Guardiola saying the game turned on a goalkeeping error and an offside…
I don’t know if he was trying to be kind but those actions are reality but that reality is the difference between the two teams in certain moments, but not for the whole match. But still, you look at the game and that’s the story of the game in the end.

on Runarsson and whether it’s difficult for him to come back…
We win and lose together and Alex has played other games. We decided to play him tonight for many reasons and that responsibility is for all of us.

on whether he regrets letting Emi Martinez go…
There’s no point having any regrets. There’s different reasons why we had to do that transaction. We did it and it’s a part of the past. He had a really good few months last season and he really helped us and obviously when our goalkeeper makes an error, these things are going to come up.

on making eight changes from the weekend…
It was a combination of the amount of games that some of them have played, some injuries that we have at the moment and obviously, there are players that deserve to play.

on our run of bad luck in games…
It is something that we are fighting against but we’re going to keep fighting. There isn’t any other way. It’s a really hard result to take but we have to look at things that can help us in the future as well. I have to say that the young players, in a really difficult scenario, I think they did really well.

on if William Saliba was close to being involved…
He cannot be involved because he is not in the squad.

on if he is eligible to play in EFL fixtures…
We made that decision with him and we’ll see what we’re going to do in January.

on if the plan is to loan out William Saliba…
We are talking about it, yes.

  39. Ed, think it’s just a wording thing. Appears to be saying that while may be technically eligible for game he is not only ineligible for prem but has been categorised, internally, as not a member of 1st team squad.

It’s…bonkers. There’s always some chance that there are issues behind scene, which a manager is right not to discuss, which could, if we knew, explain situation and exonerate him. But all we have to go on is a bizarre situation.

Some insist it is a matter of Saliba suffering immense personal tragedy, and these measures taken as a result, but seems to me there’s no way that can be all there is to it. Too many things point elsewhere, including Saliba’s look discussing it with Laca, his Guendouzi exchange, now that farcical evasion tonight.

I think we can surely add him to Guendouzi and Ozil.

  40. I’m pissed off tonight. Smith Rowe decision has done my head in. Unless, again, some unknown internal thing, it suggests to me someone whose judgement is simply below par.

Judgement of a player, situation now, and situation in the future.

Strong youth career, strong loan, strong Europa performances. Player you should be fighting to provide serious opportunity to in best of times, not being given time he should get in near worst of them, despite a profile it seems abundantly clear could help now and in the future.

Not given a chance in a game we would not have been favourites for with 1st 11, in which the task therefore was selecting an 11 with a limited chance to win but which could hopefully meet other objectives, or make maximum sense, in particular circumstances. Trying to keep open mind, lean on truth of all the unknowns which may be influential, but I think that’s my trust gone about judgment.

We really can’t afford not to invest in these players.

I totally agree with back or sack Arteta as it is looking perilous at the moment.

  43. Ouch: just seen the goals and I’d like to think that with our normal backline and keeper, and with VAR we wouldn’t necessarily have conceded any of them. But, as a fully paid up member of the ‘not quite good enough reseve team keeper’ club I can only sympathise with not so very young Runarsson. I suspect Norse London will not be red much longer for him. Mind you, I remember thinking much the same during the 5-7 Reading encounter, and look at Emmi’s progress since then.

Shotta looks like Poch is going Paris.

In the cup final the injury to an attacking player turned the tide in Arsenal’s favour, since then Chelsea have invested heavily in that area and Arsenal have weakened in all areas save CB.

With some self inflicted injuries on top the gulf in this upcoming contest will be huge. Better stewardship of the club would have bought in Silva over Luiz but it is what is, hopefully the Gunners can fluke a win!
