Ignorance And Stupidity

Sorry  folk .The three possible posts I had lined up for today have not materialised .If one does I will publish it latter on.Sorry about that ,but for new readers here is another look at an old item.Sorry again.

Is it just me or are others infuriated by ignorance and stupidity?

Now I don’t blame people who are stupid, simply because they are.  I mean they are born stupid.  Nobody chooses to be an idiot.  Mostly they can’t help it.  Such is life.

No, what annoys me is that some stupid people insist on thinking they are smart.  And smart to the extent that they know more about a given subject than a top professional.

Of course this likely happens in all manner of activities, but I want to talk about football – and Arsenal in particular.

I am told all the time “I am entitled to an opinion”.

Of course when I claim that in that case, I am entitled to hold the opinion that they are idiots, that same ‘entitlement’ doesn’t appear to hold true for me.

If an opinion is formed from a position of almost total ignorance or built on falsehoods and misinformation, what is it worth?  It is in fact worth less than nothing.  I would prefer to hold no opinion on matters, rather than one which proves I am a foolish halfwit.

If I have a heart complaint I’d go to see a specialist heart Consultant.  If he tells me I am in decent health and half an Aspirin per day and some light exercise will see me well would I then insist that I need a quadruple bypass simply because my plumber mate down the pub says that’s what I need?

Or if I read a blog by an accountant in which he insists he has strong opinions on the matter, and I should therefore accept what he is saying, would I?

No!

Well why does anyone who watches a football match and follows Piers Morgan on twitter think that they know better than Arsene Wenger?  The reality is that in all likelihood, Doris the Tea Lady knows more about football and Arsenal than them.  I get told “I am a season ticket holder, 30 years of watching Arsenal, that entitles me to an opinion.”  Well I have been watching Westerns for 50 years but I would not presume to tell John Ford how to direct one.  (I know he is dead by the way.)

Buying a ticket entitles you to nothing more than a seat and a game to watch.  It does not buy you the right to pick the team, choose formations or set tactics.

If someone tells me the world is flat, I don’t feel the need to debate the subject with them.  There could be only two reasons they believe that.

Complete stupidity.  Or ignorance.

Ignorance can be excused.  But if they have been told the facts and shown the evidence, ignorance can be excluded and stupidity is all that is left.  So when someone says something like “Wenger does not understand defence” they immediately fall into the stupid category.  And they should not complain when I tell them that they are a moron.

Or when people insist that Arsene has refused to spend money.

Again, idiot.

The annual accounts over the past 10 years prove there has been no money.  Arsene has said there has been no money.  So if they are going to ignore the facts then they can only be stupid. There is no alternative.

The biggest problem is not people like bloggers claiming to understand things that they clearly don’t.  There will always be people who hugely overestimate their knowledge and intellect.  No, the problem is the masses of ill-informed halfwits that accept and repeat as fact, the opinions of these leaders of opinion.  Hitler was not the problem.  It was the millions of followers he attracted that was the problem.

Some want-to-be manager writing a blog about Arsenal is not the problem.  It’s the pathetic halfwits that believe that what he is saying has some real value, who are the problem.

People claim to know why Mata did not sign for Arsenal, for example. When in fact they have no idea at all the reasons for him going to Chelsea.

Here is the thing.

I have opinions about players, formations and tactics.  Ask me on a Saturday morning to pick the team and I will have a go.  But the difference is that by Saturday teatime, if we have lost I won’t claim it was because the manager was too stupid to pick the team that I did.

Pointing to an outcome and claiming it would have been better if your advice had been heeded Is nothing but evidence of your own arrogance and stupidity.

I really can’t understand why so many people believe that their one field of excellence is football and Arsenal.

But I can understand why they infuriate me with their ignorance and stupidity.

  1. Nice read, However have to disagree with the statement “Hitler was not the problem. It was the millions of followers he attracted that was the problem”. For me the actual problem was his financier’s from the petrol-chemical and pharmaceutical industries that financed his propaganda and rise to power, combining that with conglomerations designed to re-arm the German nation illegally, this for me was the biggest influence on German history of the time. But.

Maybe I just proved your point on opinions?

  2. ZimPaul is alive and well, just busy busy fighting the good fight in these parts, another story, in its own way parallel to PosA, righting wrongs. No a lion didn’t get me, but I tell you what, up in Kariba a pride of man eating lions got two poor folks, one stumbling home from the beer hall, the other a woman busy with her lover in the bush, the man fled naked and terrified for help. On tracking the lions (we have find and kill policy on all lions that attack people), one game ranger was himself ambushed and attacked, whereupon his colleagues took aim, missed the lion(s), and hit the poor ranger in the hip and foot. Yesterday, 3 days tracking the pride, they killed three of the five, the two escaped. The drama continues.

    Come on arsenal ….!

  3. Good post George. Somebody needed to call them out. Nice to see you, AA and Steww and others starting this positive place where people can come to enjoy and be together on all things Arsenal. Hope it goes from strength to strength.

Also, really good to see the people whose comments I enjoy here.

you have covered the stupid and the ignorant that follow them like sheep.
There is a third group. A more sinister bunch who who know what they advocate is pure hog wash but they keep on pushing that due to an agenda. These folks can be gooners OR NOT. their agenda either monetary in nature or the deferment of the club as their main objective.
This group is by far the most dangerous and please do not assume they are stupid or ignorant. They are neither. And they are in every blog waging their personal war daily. One person at a time….

  8. I think the biggest problem with opinion formers like you George is this habit of shilly shallying and sitting on the fence. If you’ve got an opinion come out and state what it is. Do you think these people are stupid or ignorant? Which is it? I pay my dues to PA I have a right to know . I demand to know or I’ll get a campaign going and we’ll put bin bags on the deckchairs and get David Hasselhoff to support us and everything.

  9. By the way I think it was the Industrialists and aristocrats in Germany who thought they could manipulate Hitler to keep the left wing at bay, combined with a left fearing ruling class in the rest of Europe that must shoulder the blame. Of course the hideous death machine of the first world war instilled in the the British and French populations an understandably powerfully pacifism which discouraged their governments from taking on the Nazis when they were at their weakest.
The rise of the murderous fascist and communist regimes in Europe in the middle of the last century and their brutal policies were in many ways only possible because of that same slaughter of 1914 to 1918 which in some ways inured people to mass killing.
It’s a perverse and contradictory old world.

  19. this one and yesterday;s are the best..the best i say…congratulations to both…you rrepresent me..i will vote for you.
i get the same as you andrew when i laugh at people who say “im entitled to an opinion” but i keep slapping them with realities they cant face.. goonerkam is spot on too.. i have seen a few in various blogs..they dont care about anything else other than suffocating any positivity and always questioning the club and everything about it..its easy..they are tottenham fans who are taking the piss out of frustrated arsenal fans…either that or its saboteurs from chechnya paving the road for their fat boss..heh… when you isolate them and ridicule their posts they will start talking about “how the fan who pays his money deserves better..” ahhh bless them and their concern….

you all know meanlean;s blog right? well for the last 3 to 4 years he is getting bombarded by trolls because of his ever positive outlook. its either one multiprofiled cunt or two -three tw@ts who are more interested in changing meanlean;s view on arsenal than solving any arsenal “problems” through “debates”…lol…

once i told yogi that though everyone is entitled to an opinion , not all opinions carry the same importance/gravity and it depends who is saying what and what his background or experience is. i got banned….i guess it was too realistic a comment for him to face. his reply was something in the lines of ” without opinions whats the point of blogs and getting together to discuss issues of our club?” discussions is a different than debating though…to debate means one side positive the other negative..what fan deliberately gets on the negative to “debate” about his beloved club?…. a cunt with an agenda obviously

and yes ..its not the one withe the first idea thats wrong..but the idiot who said ” yeah thats a good idea, lets do that”.

  20. Yes Steve, bloody hell. The country is riveted to this story, there are many lions in the bush, even around large towns in national park areas, lots of incidents, close encounters, but man eaters are uncommon. The last big one, about 10 or so years back, who accounted for a good few people was called “maswerasei”, loosely translated as (in deep lion voice)…… “good afternoon, and how are you?”.

  21. A bit of both Shotta, a bit of both.

I watched the match last week, poor covering or pressing I thought from our lads rather than cb error per se, I would take it as team error. Their attack stole between our mid and our back 4 to make those telling passes. Otherwise we would have won it, or drawn, the margin for error is so small.

  22. some truly remarkable stuff ive been reading in “the making of”. funny how all the people (fans or not) accusing wenger of running the club like a dictator belong in the era when graham was active. i read stuff like graham benefitting from the players coming out the arsenal youth ranks, i read about board and fans being upset that george would revert to a neandrathal style of football, i read how everyone in dressing room hated him for he was deciding on contracts and salaries, and of course how he took “fees” for the transfers he brought in which was the final straw. 🙂

i also read how arsenal wasnt making the best of its commercial ability, even though dein was the frontman for the bigfive club “itv vs sky” …. ahahahah…

so wenger hasnt changed much then has he? ……

  26. The way Piers Morgan went off after we lost to the Spuds was incredible. There he was, a middle aged man throwing a tantrum which could’ve rivaled the best four year old tantrum ever scene, and all because he does not have the stomach to handle a loss. He said the loss would make us a selling club, that we’d drop out of the Champions league spots and all of a sudden the power has shifted to White Heart Lane. Never mind that poor old Piers looks like he never kicked a football in anger all his life. He’s a damn football expert because he pays his season ticket and he can tell Arsene what is what.

Zim, as a nature lover I have to admit that I’m rooting for the Lions. If the humans don’t want to get eaten, they should consider not encroaching on lion habitat.

I am with you on the lions Gainsbourg. Man-animal conflict usually arises due to encroachment by humans. In India, the Gir forests, home of the asiatic lion has been so encroached upon, that you can see lions from some of the busy main roads.

Whenever are we going to bring our world population down to sustainable levels?

  30. That was never a foul on Bale. If you throw yourself at a ball, you get there second and you get clobbered, it’s your fault for jumping up. Gerrard got the ball first and was penalized by the Bale Halo effect.

  38. Liverpool got lucky. That ref was bound and determined to give Spurs the game. Seriously, Bale makes a face and the referee whistles for a foul. For Spud’s first, he lost out on a 50/50 ball and got jacked by Gerrard’s trailing elbow. For Spud’s second, Lucas put his hand on Bale’s shoulder and “beep-beep,” stop play, let’s see if Gareth is okay. As it turns out, he clutched his face, even though Lucas’s hand was near his shoulder, when he over dribbled the ball and it was getting away from him.

I’m off to taunt Piers Morgan on twitter.

  45. Just found my way here, and have to say the article sums things up wonderfully.

I think I’d add a couple of old phrases that apply to this. Firstly, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. How many people read something in the media, believe it ( a mistake in itself), and base their whole opinion on it.

I think it is telling that there is more disagreement about the Hitler stuff than anything else. Personally, no matter how much you want to distribute responsibility, nothing happens without the scarily, darkly charismatic figure in the middle.

And the other old phrase? Less seriously: Opinions are like…….

Like all others commenting I wish and hope there is a concerted effort at some semblance of balance and tackling the human over population issue. The poaching stories are the most heartbreaking. These creatures need our protection more than ever.
Good results today. We must take advantage. COYG.

  48. I am an animal lover too, but in the long run, the sooner the man-eaters are destroyed, the better. If their behaviour spreads to other prides, it will bring the lions into permanent conflict with humans and there can only be one end to that – the hunting to extinction of lions.

And I enjoyed the post, George.
