  1. The difference between the turgid spell earlier in the season and this game was that although some of the metrics showed some better football from the Home team the Gunners out shot the Hammers by a fair margin/percentage even if some of those were on the counter later on it was still better then the Autumn footy, which was most likely so poor because with Auba downing tools the team back then played with ten men for many matches.
To be fair there was a spell of consistently good football in December after dropping Auba an incredible number of goals.
IMO the mismanagement of Pepe no matter how you rate him, even if to just rest Saka for twenty mins after a kicking, is woeful, Mourinho style, again.
Keeping Eleney and Nketiah as squad players in a team playing in Europe 3 times a week would be the best football and financial call. Overall the better footy imo is thanks to those that signed the above and built the academy.

  2. I wouldn’t expect the best football of the season during the run in, that was December. There have been some highlights. IMO it was always going to come down to the NLD, even in January this was a fair prediction.

I do hope as with Xhaka, Elneny and Nketiah can convince the coach/Mikel that he’s best off keeping these players considering next season’s demands whichever league they end up in.

Elneny is an interesting player perhaps not as good as Viera the unfortunate yardstick for many an Arsenal fan as he was a giant player but Mo can pass the ball as he’s shown in these games.

The silly Ozil goal against Ludo last time out in the CL came from a perfectly weighted lofted punt up the pitch by Mo for Mesut to feast on.
Perfect age and character to carry on helping this younger squad to grow as a backup to Mikel’s starting two (when fit) in midfield. If they keep him the usual crowd will squeal but it’s just simple logic.

  3. I’ve always been an Elneny fan and could never understand why he didn’t play more. Mind you I nearly got a Monreal shirt so make of that what you will. We’re doing OK. I was reasonably confident of 6th place back in August so I’m super pleased with this season. We’ve a chance of better than that but I don’t think we’ll quite get it over the line unless one of our forwards unexpectedly gets a rush of individual goals.

  4. Nacho was excellent, scored his fair share of goals and never let us down.
Super pleased is strange description of this calamitous season even we do get fourth.
Happy with the final position yes but the overall the season has been full of mistakes and controversies.

  5. foreverheady I wish we had a left back as good as Monreal now, he would be a major upgrade on Tierney, as for how far ahead of Tavares, well lets say I’d say he still is to this day well ahead of him.

  8. Well Ian, as I’ve probably mentioned before I tend to harness my inner 11 year old when following the team, happily going along the willing suspension of disbelief route. So for me the fact that we’ve won quite a lot of games, have secured some form of European football for next season, and are still in contention for that 4th spot is all good news. I like the fact that the players and match going fans seem to be connnecting, and I love the way the celebration police are most definitely on our case. I’ve enjoyed watching some of our players develop and at times we’ve looked a good side, and although there have been some lucky moments that we’ve capitalised on I like the fact that we do seem a little less leaky when it comes to defending. Most of all I like the way my soon to be seventeen year old son has started to enjoy supporting the Arsenal again as its given us lots to share and talk about.
I can also see many of the things that have not gone so well so I’m not quite into second chilhood, though some would say its an increasingly close run thing!

  9. Tim, I like the first couple of paragraphs of what you say and I to was under the impression we were more stable however I’m not sure the stats back that up now.
It’s great your lad is starting to enjoy the games although I would suggest it’s the results and not the football, the first half against the hammers was truly awful as was several points this season.
There have been many games this season when I have enjoyed the final whistle more than most of the game and Sundays was another like that.
I will be chuffed if we get top four but I still long for those days when we deserved to be at the top table and other fans appreciated us too.

  12. A tough game for Liverpool before playing Spurs. I didn’t see that coming.

  13. Yeah this was a hard game and they play the spuds on Saturday not Sunday for some reason.
I think Conte will know he just has to set up his team to sit tight and try and catch Liverpool (who always play a high line anyway) on the break. Normally this would be a banker red win but under the circumstances it might just be harder to call.
I hope we turn up against Leeds.

  14. there was a fans forum at Arsenal tonight, and one big change coming, season ticket holders who miss 10 games or more next season will not be allowed renew the following season, although selling or donating the ticket on Ticket Exchange will count as attending, I think even putting the ticket up on Ticket Exchange even if not sold, will count as attending.

  15. Ed,
As most of the season ticket holders who regularly don’t attend (including the dead ones) give their season tickets to someone they know on a season basis or even longer, I can’t see this making much difference.
When I have up my season ticket I got tickets all around the ground without ever having to go through the club, or upstairs for that matter.

  16. The Woman’s team was excellent last night and Foord’s second goal was an absolutely disscusting goal better than we’ve seen from any of the men this season. Maybe with the exception of Xhaka’s excellent build up play and ESR’s finish, but for pure control and placement in the top bin it’s got to be up there.
When Parris come on and took on the spud defense and went outside to produce a perfectly good cross I was shouting at the TV “no you should of come inside her then ” my Mrs gave me a state and I realized that saying has completely different conations in Woman’s football. I’m sure there are several more instances where commentators will have to watch themselves.

  19. GvB looking like another top younger coach alongside Potter and Viera, I’d ask what could they do with a quarter billion dollar budget and players like Ozil and Auba but I don’t want to induce PTSD in half the fan base!

Monreal was more then a cult hero, double or triple FA Cup winner with the club? Only Cole and Winterburn won more from LB? Maybe he’s tied with or just behind Clichy?
Saw many a shirt and heard many a song like

“Nacho nacho, I wanna be a nacho man…”

  20. So Mikel is up for another three years. The fact that it’s only three suggest either the board don’t really trust him or he has ambitions elsewhere.

    Like

  21. ah now Ian, 3 years is a damn long contract for a guy who has seen his side finish 8th x 2, and is not sure of top 4 this season despite our two main rivals for it, Man Utd and Spurs being so bad that they both changed mangers during the season.

  22. And he now says the contract was offered to him after the recent three defeats. It seems the board believe their is glass ceiling that the club can achieve which maybe is reasonable.
Whether Mikel can achieve this on a regular basis is another question.
