It was a great pleasure for me to meet up with George and Shotta after so many years just knowing them through this site and Twitter – and to meet Omi for the first time.
Poor fan as I am, I missed the friendly against that lot up the road: were there any signs of encouragment?
Sorry to be late to the party, but I appreciated your reminder of the line from Thomas More to Richard Rich, which has stayed with me since I first heard it 50 or so years ago. Nothing pretentious about it.
And as for encouraging signs, I also didn’t see the match, but reports claimed that some Spurs supporters cheered Bukayo when he came on. If that really happened, it’s truly encouraging, even if the football wasn’t.
Great podcast and lots to agree with and disagree with.
Firstly to answer the main question unless the season is a total disaster I can’t really see this board getting rid of Mikel.
I suppose it depends how restless the natives are and how well the spuds do, if we come sixth and the spuds seventh many would take that.
For anyone thinking we could possibly come top four that would require us to have a remarkable season and one of the fab four to have a really poor season and also none of the fringe teams doing well as well. For all three things to happen is very unlikely.
We should of course come fifth and although Arsene almost always overachieved, like George says we haven’t got Arsene anymore and I can’t see Mikel achieving fifth. So sixth, seventh or eighth is where I see us.
Last season was very strange and home form will matter alot more this year if our fickle fans once again get upset then it could be a long season.
With no Europe this year I think sixth is the very least a squad should achieve and so obviously if we don’t then I believe Mikel will have to go although like I said it’s difficult to call this board.
As far as measuring every manager against Arsene although I agree there will never be another Arsene we should still try and achieve his values so if Mikel cannot achieve entertaining football then we should definitely aspire to have a manager who can especially as dull football doesn’t seem to be achieving any success.
The other thing I have to point out is although after 2004 it wasn’t just entertainment that excited us, in 2008 the league was stolen from us any there was other times we were close to success.

Yes Ian, absolutely.
The same idiots who said tearing up the Ramsey contract was good for the club said the same for Runnarson for Martinez, the signings of Saliba and Pepe by a known quantity in the Spanish courts, who said Gabriel was a good signing whilst the more experienced Saliba was then loaned out after never playing for the club, they are now saying the sale of Willock is good for the club.
They don’t know football.
Which is why they have been celebrating good footballers being replaced by average footballers.
For about three years now. Consecutively.
Even when a sale has been good for the club when has been written off or gobbled up by signings like the journeyman Willian they can’t admit this in their accounting. Almost like they don’t know the history of Arsenal football club which is strange no?
George Graham cannot be happy. Was John Jenson a better footballer then Partey?
Well, he could shoot better. Ouch.
Listening to their content: the blaggers are not just ignorant about the footy but they are also delusional.
Which top level football team has played with two solid CMs in the last decade? What was Madrid’s midfield as they won four European cups in a row? Who was England’s best midfielder in the last fifteen years (the under-capped Carrick of course!)
How did Italy just beat England?
The people who say they want change for the sake of change are still living the football of their childhood and cannot understand how the game has changed! Because:
They do not know football.
But they do sound like children (it can be a problem when you try to fulfill your childhood fantasies on football podcasts…).
I can understand why some coaches will go for stodgy line ups.
But today in 2021 a famously defensive coach like Deschamps the Water Carrier himself played Pogba as his 8 ahead of a back four.
Till he had a ricket and threw the knockout game selecting a CB in a three who probably won’t be starting for France ahead of Saliba in the future.
The state of the Arsenal when two players who would’ve improved the French and English squads at the euros the two best squads can’t even get onto the pitch for the Arsenal, what a mess!!!! (if Southgate picks his footballers on form then how did Willock not make his squad!? The Fraud. He’d have done more on the pitch in that final then Phillips or Henderson when chasing a goal. Arteta is more Southgate at Middlesbrough then a young Clough at Derby. Clough was not such an egomaniac and knew he needed a no.2 for starters. Yep, the modern coach can be more egotistical then Clough without the kudos to back it up. Fraudulent behaviour.
I was saying spuds season would put pressure on Mikel well actually what about Crystal Palace, If Paddy does well or even finishes above us then the fans would be baying for blood.
Live on YouTube tomorrow Friday morning at 6:00am AST or 11:00am BST it will be me, George and Ehab previewing Arsenal at Brentford. Click on the link below.
Well I’ve quite enjoyed the summer, but its back to the old familiar mix of pain and worry this evening. Let’s hope there are a few moments of joy along the way too.

FA Cup victories in 2014, 2015 & 2017 (inc. a 2nd place in 2015, so they almost did a Double).
I would humbly suggest that the source of the above quotation knows less then the sweet FA about the Football.
These blaggers belong in the bin!

We saw on the pitch a couple of years ago that Nuno was a better coach then Emery.
I guess that we can also now safely conclude that Emery is a better coach then Arteta?
I might watch the match on Friday night.
