Arsenal “Entertain” Sheffield United.

Hello the remaining inhabitants of Positively Arsenal. I hope you are all well and coping with the stress of the transfer window, a trauma that appears to be dwarfing that insignificant little virus knocking about. Our poor fanbase is worrying itself to death about possible comings and goings, but the end is nigh, thank fook.

Anyway, to matters more pressing, at 2 pm on Sunday we take on Sheffield United at the home of football.

Now Arsenal are in either great shape or in a right old state, depending on which extreme side of the fence you have jumped down on. Results , of late ,have been decent although performances have been unspectacular. We are at the stage where this is about all we can hope for.

We played well against Fulham, although everyone does, but the games against West Ham and Liverpool were solid at best. I expect “solid” again on Sunday afternoon.

Sheffield have yet to score aa goal, let alone win a point, so we really should be winning this one. However, despite their lack of goals and points, they haven’t played half bad, we only overtook them in the table on the final day of the season, so on results over the distance, the teams are evenly matched. A bit of a worry is that we only managed one point against them last season.

As for our selection, your guess is s good as mine, but my best guess is Leno, Hector, Holding , Luiz, Tierney, AMN, Xhaka, Ceballos, Willian, Aubameyang and Lacazette.

Sheffield also play 3 at the back so I think it will be a rather dour affair, but if we get the points, that will sweeten it enough for now.

Enjoy the game and stay safe and well.

Pedantic George.

  3. After today, as things stand, Mike Riley, you’re getting sacked in the morning
Never, in the history of the EPL, since Fergie and Scudamore took over, has so many goals ,been put past giants of the North West wearing red, by such normally, mediocre teams

Ireland’s government will tomorrow discuss putting the country into a level 5 lockdown for up to four weeks, one thing it would mean is all sporting events cancelled, Ireland’s game v Wales next week would have to be called off, would also likely see schools, pubs and restaurants closed again too. This news come on the day when one of the head guys in the Government, Eamon Ryan, leader of the Green Party, actually said there was a good chance Dublin and Donegal, the two counties on Level 3, where the rest of the country is on level 2, could avoid going to level 4.

  12. if the reports are true that torreira is joining A Madrid, and Guenduzi is off to Hertha, then that would leave us short of numbers in CM, with Xhaka, Caballos, Elneny, and Willock, of course Arteta might use AMN and even Chambers in CM if needed, but not sure its something he will want to do, so if we make a senior signing tomorrow surely it will be a CM

  16. Can’t beleive Gunnersaurus has been given the old heave-ho. It must be galling to be told he won’t get paid as there’s no need for him on match-days any longer when he sees Ozil picking up his wages when equally unemployed. I reckon his agent must be a bit of a dinosaur.

  22. The Standard report Thomas Partey will undergo a medical in Madrid this evening ahead of completing a dramatic deadline-day move to #Arsenal. Personal terms have already been agreed between the club & Partey’s representatives.

The reports are that Arsenal did not tell Atletico Madrid that they were meeting his buy out clause, as its paid to La Liga not to the club.

  28. With all the transfer excitement it would be remiss not to point out the way Elneny injected pace for our first goal, and the way Pepe at pace secured the second. I hope that we will see more of this type of play as the season unfolds.

  29. Not just pace, a fine pass to break the lines through the centre circle to set up the attack and then he holds back and times his late run into the box to perfection as he helps set up the first goal. Top class midfield play there from the Egyptian.

  30. Apparently not able to get medical and admin done for Rekik so although has signed on, can’t officially join till January.

With this one in particular it seems truly bizarre to leave it until the last moment. Not a 1st team player, not a big fee, and presumably it’s been in the offing for some time.

Oh well. I liked idea of u23’s getting some help right away as a relegation fight awaits them unless get points on board in next couple of games. Pretty odd situation where you are compelled to loan out most of your best 18-21 year olds for development and to keep them happy, and then have to buy a few in to strengthen youth ranks.

  34. Really tough for Jack W. World at his feet only a few years ago, now struggling. Really hope he has someone wise advising him right now. Would love to see the Arsenal put its arm round him, get him to do his badges etc. Suspect he will still want to play though. Fingers crossed for him.

  35. Well looks like we have a new player and apparently one that MA wanted. If he looks as if he will be any good in his first few matches watch out for the pundits to start a campagn against him. My hope is that if he is big and strong and quite skilful then he will make a good pairing with Xhaka which will give us more control in the midfield. We will see. One or two cynics have suggested that if he was any good then richer clubs than us would have come in for him, but I’m not so sure. My instinct is that at that price he would not have fitted the desired profile of some of those clubs.

And good luck to Torriera, good enough player, perhaps not suited to this league, or it’s bent refs, but he will always have that moment in the NLD.

  40. Thomas Partey signing means we now have 19 non homegrown players, with only 17 allowed to be registered in our 25 man EPL squad. So unless a couple of them are going but not confirmed yet, or we move them to a Championship club in the next 11 days, we are going to have two players on our books who we can not play in EPL games. Ozil and Sokratis look the most likely to be left out of our EPL 25 man Squad

  41. Thomas Partey has joined us on a long-term contract.

The 27-year-old midfielder had been with Atletico since 2012, making 188 appearances, in which time he won both the Europa League and Super Cup in 2018, and was a Champions League runner-up in 2016.

Last season, the Ghana international made 46 appearances for Atletico, playing a key role in their third-placed finish in La Liga and reaching the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

During his career, Thomas has also enjoyed successful loan spells in Spain with RCD Mallorca (2013/14) and UD Almeria (2014/15), and has made 29 international appearances for Ghana.

Technical director Edu, said: “Thomas has all the right attributes to be a top player for Arsenal. He is a leader on and off the pitch and he is exactly the kind of player and person we want at the club. We already feel like we know Thomas very well based on the work we have done analysing his performances closely in recent times.

“With his all-round game and positive aggressive style, he will be a brilliant addition to our squad. We’ve made a strong start to the season and we want to continue to build on this with Thomas now part of our club.”

Mikel Arteta added: “We have been watching Thomas for a while, so we’re now delighted to add such a high quality player to our squad. He is a dynamic midfielder with great energy. He brings a lot of experience from a top club that has competed at the highest level in La Liga and the Champions League for several years.

“We’re very impressed with his attitude and his approach to the game. He’s an intelligent footballer and we’re looking forward to him integrating into our system and contributing to the progress we’re building at the moment at the club.”

Thomas will wear the No 18 shirt and will join up with his new team-mates next week after he returns from international duty with Ghana.

Everyone at Arsenal welcomes Thomas to our club.

  43. Atletico Madrid statement: “LaLiga has communicated to Atlético de Madrid this Monday at 11:28 pm that representatives of Arsenal FC have appeared at the headquarters of the football organisation in order to exercise the termination clause of the footballer Thomas Partey.”

Ha ha ha, AFC waited till half an hour before end of the window to close out the deal. Some reports suggest this was done due to A Madrid’s total refusal during the window to discuss the fee, they demanded the buy out clause be met.

  46. I’m pleased and hopeful with Partey. Think we’ve good options at cm now and just maybe someone who complements Xhaka perfectly. That said Dani very important to our game at minute and Elneny performing well. Should find out pretty quickly if this will mean using three midfielders many games.

  47. Got to say I hate idea Ozil could be omitted from squad. Very grim should it end that way and seems nothing short of incredible to have his talent at club and, yep, on that money, and deny yourself any chance of him playing.

Bonkers. Equally so, if the story was real of late PSG attempt to loan Sokratis, surely that would be bonkers to reject also, what with him, Chambers, Mari, Mustafi and Saliba on books and yet to feature this season, plus the squad numbers issue.

  48. As for Saliba, yikes. I was really looking forward to seeing him play this year but goodness knows what’s happening.

Don’t think it stacks up that it is all about protecting player after hard time personally. Would being on the bench for a league cup game be harmful to that aim? I guess thing that would really add light would be knowing if proposed loan to Fulham was true.

Anyway, I hope player is ok, and hope this unease I have about whether we ever see him play for us is completely unfounded.

  49. ‘Long before the transfer window closed, AS Saint-Etienne had reached an agreement with William Saliba and accepted Arsenal’s offer for a one-season loan,’ a statement on the French outfit’s official website read.

‘Unfortunately, all the administrative conditions could not be met in time, in England, for the completion of the deal.

‘The disappointment is great for ASSE and William Saliba, who was particularly determined to return to a club where he has flourished.’

Just gets stranger. Willing to deal with club we had bad blood with. Then muck them and player about, meaning whatever is going on with him is now likely worse. All very odd.
