Arsenal “Entertain” Sheffield United.

Hello the remaining inhabitants of Positively Arsenal. I hope you are all well and coping with the stress of the transfer window, a trauma that appears to be dwarfing that insignificant little virus knocking about. Our poor fanbase is worrying itself to death about possible comings and goings, but the end is nigh, thank fook.

Anyway, to matters more pressing, at 2 pm on Sunday we take on Sheffield United at the home of football.

Now Arsenal are in either great shape or in a right old state, depending on which extreme side of the fence you have jumped down on. Results , of late ,have been decent although performances have been unspectacular. We are at the stage where this is about all we can hope for.

We played well against Fulham, although everyone does, but the games against West Ham and Liverpool were solid at best. I expect “solid” again on Sunday afternoon.

Sheffield have yet to score aa goal, let alone win a point, so we really should be winning this one. However, despite their lack of goals and points, they haven’t played half bad, we only overtook them in the table on the final day of the season, so on results over the distance, the teams are evenly matched. A bit of a worry is that we only managed one point against them last season.

As for our selection, your guess is s good as mine, but my best guess is Leno, Hector, Holding , Luiz, Tierney, AMN, Xhaka, Ceballos, Willian, Aubameyang and Lacazette.

Sheffield also play 3 at the back so I think it will be a rather dour affair, but if we get the points, that will sweeten it enough for now.

Enjoy the game and stay safe and well.

Pedantic George.

  1. Thanks George.

In some ways I’m puzzled by the enduring conflict amongst the AFC fanbase, but in so many other ways I’m really not. For literally as long as there has been ‘online’, there has been our fanbase all but tearing itself apart. Usually only online, as it happens, but serious enough to have offline implications, including no less than the loss of our greatest ever manager.

This ‘traditional’ split appears to be raising it’s ugly head again. Partly due to the style of our current play, which, for some, more closely resembles Emery-Ball than it’s more illustrious predecessor, Wenger-Ball.

Some of us are unhappy with the treatment of Ozil.

    With the sale of Martinez.

Some are using any of these, or all three, to criticise the club.

No doubt there are merits on both sides of each debate.

My then-girlfriend met Martinez with me at Barnet just after he joined the club about 9 years ago. We were sat immediately behind him and teammates, watching a reserve game. Although he didn’t play that night she followed his career with interest, which is unusual for someone with almost zero interest in football. You can imagine the dim view my now wife has taken of his recent ‘reward’ for helping AFC to two trophies this summer.

I personally regard Ozil as one of the great players of the decade. Whatever the ins and outs of his current predicament, you can imagine the ‘disappointment’ I feel when a team light on midfield creativity, again takes the field without him.

The main problem I had with Emery’s scruffy football was that the players seemed to have little clue as to their role, and instructions for playing in the team seemed a bit thin on the ground. The evident disappearance of player confidence and competence amongst many of the team during this period was a huge price paid for a club that might have ended up heading for relegation had it gone on much longer.

Today Arteta is seen as one of the brightest, most exciting coaches – sorry, managers – currently hard at work in the Premier League.

It is probably not too much of a stretch to say that not only is he repairing the mess made during Emery’s brief reign, but also effecting and finalising a change from the culture of putting players first above all else, as practiced for more than two decades by Arsene Wenger.

As some of you may be aware, I loved Arsene Wenger. But I also have a huge amount of time and admiration for Mikel Arteta who has added a certain steeliness in his dealings with his own players which is finding splendid expression in our team’s treatment of top level opposition.

    Not least Liverpool.

Who knows how many transfer windows he will require to polish up the squad to glisten like City or rampage like Liverpool. I’m guessing a minimum of 3, but given MA has not yet completed one window for Arsenal, it’s hard to be sure.

But I AM certain that, despite my misgivings over Martinez, my reservations regarding Ozil and my frustration with some of the play, I’m getting right behind Mikel and his chosen players. In well under a single year he has won two trophies and overturned the odds in multiple matches we had no right to expect to win. He’s a leader and a fighter, as impressive as a far-sighted, organised manager as he was classy as a player.

We are so lucky to have him, and I’m backing him and the club 100% of the way. At the very least I think he deserves the benefit of whatever doubt some of us may harbour for him and/or the club.

  2. You see Andrew there is the problem, Arteta can be everything you say he is, but I cant ignore the other shite that is going on from the executives. Criticism of Kroenke, and co. is not criticism of Arteta. And when people suggest it is, they are basically backing Kroenke and telling me that so should I. Well fuck that for a game of soldiers.(banned smiley thingy)

  3. Andrew & George

For me some of the current discussions reflects the debates when George set up this blog. People back then were blaming the football manager for the owners spending policy.

Some made a lot of money from that process, but no one with any class was comfortable with such bat shit crazy malice.

This didn’t mean you couldn’t be critical of any tactics or anything, but it did mean you’d have to have been a proper weirdo to blame the manager who said he thought of quitting when these owners came in, for the policies of these same new owners.

Can we re-clarify that being critical of the actions of the owners is not a critique of the manager!

  4. After all how can anyone not be critical of Vinai the clown who spent years denying Arsene a penny, before he signed off on the expenditure of one hundred million pounds on Pepe and Saliba in one window. Money the club needed to spend elsewhere. You couldn’t make it up! Peter Risdale would be jealous of Vinai and the Spanish Pedro Risdale if he wasn’t already jealous of Vinai and the Brazilian Pedrosino Risdalinhio.

Whatever happened to Plymouth FC? Another
    Leveraged buyout? Blackpool R Us?

The Kronke’s most trusted man at the club since they took over is a ducking joke as bad if not actually worse then the clown up and Utd and anyone who can’t handle that discussion (there really is nothing left to ‘debate’ about these Frauds), they just need to grow themselves some footballs.

ARSENAL are definitely evolving and we are not seeing anywhere near the finished product but in flashes we see some great play and I’m enjoying looking forward to games which I certainly wasn’t under Unai’s stale football.
I try not to look back to much to Arsene’s amazing stats and style because it just makes me hate the fans and ex players who brought him down even more. I have been going through some old stuff and found ian wrights book, I immediately chucked it away.
Looking forward I hope Mikel can steer us back to the days of Arsene and the sunshine he brought to the club.

  10. 48 hours of the transfer window left

can anyone tell me is the extra two weeks of the domestic transfer window a two way thing, can EPL clubs buy as well as sell to Football League Clubs, seen separate claims on this, some saying EPL clubs can only sell or loan to FL clubs but not buy.

  11. I have explained on Twitter this past week that the root of Arsenal’s current malaise is the Leveraged Buy Out by the Kroenkes. Like similar corporate sharks, they are leveraging the club to the max to increase the family’s net worth. Stan is in Jeff Bezos company, having increased his net worth by a “measly” $500 million since the pandemic. He is now worth over $8 Billion according to Forbes magazine.

Their Arsenal investment has been wildly successful from their point of view. A less than £1 billion loan to take 100% ownership of club and turn it into a private company has yielded a 100% return as the club is now valued at more than £2 Billion. Since the COVID restart, like any corporate raider they are cutting costs and not putting an extra penny in the club. That was their policy since 2019 when steps to be rid of Ramsey and Ozil began. It intensified when Ozil refused to take the paycut to “help” staff, same staff who were eventually sacked, all 55 of them. As Fins eloquently stated, their gimp, Vinai, who starved Wenger of funds, wasted millions of pounds on Pepe and Saliba as Raul made his agents happy. Karma was not be denied as he was sacked for his profligacy. But fans are now paying the price as there is growing evidence the club will not be aggressive in this transfer window. George and I warned repeatedly in our podcasts that this was going to be the inevitable consequence of overspending on Pepe. Some felt we we were being negative but we have been vindicated.

In my opinion the Kroenkes want to run Arsenal on the cheap hoping this will get us back to the top-4. It aint gonna happen. Only Wenger could make silk from a pig’s ear. Unfortunately Arteta is no Wenger.

My biggest misgiving about Arteta is he appears to be going along with the Kroenkes. I recently wrote a piece that by “Freezing Out Ozil, Arteta Is Playing With Fire.” He made the choice to forego his principles and not play attackng football using the best #10 in the EPL. By so doing he is playing Emery-ball without Emery. It is going to be his downfall. Mark my words.

  12. Shotta knows far more about business than I do, so I bow to his view of the ownership. I think I remember however that not so very long ago on this site we were rather proud of the fact we were run on a self-sustaining model, relying on tactics, promotion of youth and judicious dealings in the transfer market. Arsene promoted possession-based attacking (as opposed to counter attacking) football, and at his best his teams were a joy to watch. Towards the end of his time the balance shifted and shortcomings in defence and weakness in midfield against the very best teams saw too much expected of our snappy and fluid passing in the final third. Emery came and tried to offer a different way, but lost the players (both literally and metaphorically) and his side all too soon became a shambles. Mikel Arteta has steadied the ship and given not just hope but also tangible success; he has also had disappointing moments. I choose to believe that his tactical awareness and motivational power, along with a very promising pool of young home-grown players, will see the Arsenal to successful and enjoyable seasons in coming years.
I would love to be seeing the likes of Cazorla,Ozil, Wilshere, Ramsey and Rosicky (and Happy Birthday Tomas, btw) purring in midfield but those days are gone. Arteta will know what is possible and what he is trying to do and until I hear either Arteta or Mesut Ozil explain why he is being kept out of the side I shall refrain from speculation and try to enjoy the progress of the team.

That was his reward for giving anyone watching this game the only highlight of the first half a great shot drawing an excellent save from the Sheffield keeper.
With Auba now carrying a knock it’ll be tough.

But Arteta knows how it goes with the pgmob IMO it’s one reason he’s happy to have a big squad in this fixture heavy season.

Arteta for me has improved his ability to change games early in the second half with subs, he’s no longer a green rookie manager.
A fresh Pepe bursting past tiring defenders to find a fine finish. That was a hard chance to score and Saka’s was also a fine header

one trademark of Arteta’s team of late has been that when they do make chances they are good chances with a high conversion rate. today these two goals were not the easiest chances.
we’ve seen how these bursts of goals in games were signs of a growing team before.

  42. Most of us on board I think here with belief refs make our job a good few percent harder than it should be, meaning a gigantic difference in sport, and those who do surely have to account for that when weighing up our ‘best’ strategy.

For me, it has the classic feel for much of game of very English style opponents with English manager playing with extra aggression and with the ref looking very much like it was his job to try allow that to gain an advantage.

I think it shifts things significantly in terms of best option for us- probability wise- to get results. Tough going at 0-0 but while scores like that pretty good chance we should get lead in end. Go behind and it’s seriously hard work with opposition and ref in concert.

  45. Mikel Arteta’s celebrations at the end of our hard-fought victory against Sheffield United said it all.

Our manager was delighted to claim the win which propelled us up to fourth place and was asked about a wide range of subjects in his post-match press conference.

Read on for a full transcript:

    on the performance…
What I liked today was that we adapted to a very different scenario that we face din the last two games against Liverpool, it was a completely different game. I am happy with the way that we played the game that we had to play. We had the right patience, we created the right moments in the game when a lot of space started to open up in the second half, we scored two great goals and when that happens we need to improve to score the third one and then the game is gone. In the Premier League, the first time they got near our box, they scored a goal and then you have to hang in there and I don’t want to suffer as much because I lost my voice!

on the 19 passes in the lead-up to the second goal…
Yes, it was really good. I think the team is evolving in the right way, in possession in certain areas again to attack this low block, this 5-3-2, the way Chris [Wilder] has them organised, how resilient they are, how clever they are in the way they manage and conduct you into certain areas to trap you there, is really tricky. But the moment we increased our ball speed and started to read certain situations better, we attacked more efficiently with more purpose, and that is how we scored the goals.

on looking forward to seeing Saka with England…
Yes, I want to see it on TV, relaxed and nothing to do with me! I will be cheering for the boys, him and Ainsley as well. It has been really difficult week for Bukayo I believe, playing twice at Anfield, as well all the attention he got from the media after his call-up, you have to show a lot of temperament and manage your emotion and I think he did that really well with a lot of maturity.

on how confident he feels about signings…
Well I am confident we know exactly what we want to do, we are all trying our best to finalise the deals that we want, whether that is sending someone on loan or bringing someone in. We have a complete connection and cohesion between Edu and myself, the board and the ownership, so let’s see what happens in the next 36 hours.

on whether Guendouzi, Kolasinac and Torreira will leave…
I cannot comment unfortunately right now, there are things going on behind the scenes but at the moment there is nothing different.

    on Nicolas Pepe’s performance…
I am really happy, first of all for him and also for the contribution he made to the team. When this type of player is not playing, obviously they are not happy but I demanded them on matchday to be completely focused and determined to make the impact when they have the chance to play, and that is exactly what he has done. I think it is another step forward for him, he is capable of doing that but he needs to do it with consistency. This is the demand we are going to put on him but I am delighted that he has done it and he helped the team a lot today to get the points.

On whether he has the squad to get a top-four finish…
Well there’s a lot of things that you are saying that have to happen over 10 months, but that is the challenge we have. Every week they get a lot of feedback, we try to coach them the right way, we try to give them the right environment to grow and feel comfortable at our club but after there are moments, they are moments personally, there are moments of confidence, there are moments where you play more or less and you have to sustain that throughout a season with 24 or 26 players and that is the challenge that we have ahead of us, whether we can do it or not.

on whether he expects to sign at least one player…
I don’t know. What I can guarantee is that we are doing our maximum for that to happen, whether we are going to achieve it or not, I don’t know.

on bringing in new midfield options…
I cannot discuss the players that we want but we recognise certain positions that we believe we are short in. First of all in numbers and then adding different qualities to complement each other and this is what we are trying to do.

    on Gabriel….
I am very impressed because I’ve always said that in this league, in this country, one of the most difficult positions to play is as a centre-back because you get challenged and exposed many times and tested many many times. I saw from the first day, he has a lot of personality, he has big courage to play and he’s not impressed by anything. He’s very secure, very stable mentally as well throughout the game and I think he has the physical and technical attributes to adapt really well to the league. That’s why we signed him, but credit to him because to do it in this short space of time, I think that’s a big thing.

on if Arsenal have ‘found their man’ in Gabriel…
I think for him to be stable, for him to perform, he needs the right structure around him and the right organisation. I think we are getting much better at that. I am seeing a lot defenders involved saying it’s something we had to improve. Yes, it’s made us a more solid team. As you can see he doesn’t get exposed in many open spaces. This is more about the function and the structure of the team and that’s going to help them. The better our process is with the ball, the better we progress into the final third, [the better] we’re going to help our strikers so the defence is the same.

on if he has a message for the Arsenal fans…
I think that I always try to be really honest and clear. Believe me that the ownership, the board, myself, are doing everything we can to maximise the resources we have to improve the team and to sustain and keep the players that are in this club to make this club successful. I have 100% backing from them. It’s not just words, it’s reality. Whoever knows me, if it wasn’t like that I wouldn’t say it but I say it because I feel it and it’s true.

    on financial restrictions…
Whatever we can do, whether it’s ourselves or the owner, they are willing to do it to support us, to back us, because I feel that they believe in what we are trying to do.

on the quality of the current players…
I am really happy with the players that I have. My job is to improve them, this is the job, and to focus on the players that I have and the staff that I have here. To make this place better, you know? Whatever we can add, we can improve of course, we will try to do it but we have to be realistic as well about how much we do in a certain period of time. Honestly, my energy is in the people that work alongside us, we are all willing to help. They are all really supportive of me and I can only thank them. It’s a give and take between us. Whoever jumps on the boat will be welcome because we will believe that he is adding something here, whether it’s a player or a staff member or whoever. I can say that I think now that we all share the same ambitions first and we have a very clear direction and purpose to drive the goals that we want to achieve right now.

    on fatigue from this week…
    I need a break, I’m telling you!

on what it says about our mental strength to get the job done…
In going twice to Anfield… Going once emotionally drains you. You know what you’re going to face, you know you’re not going to have any time. You know how good they are, how organised they are, how resilient they are, so you have to demand 100 per cent of yourselves. To go two times in four days – and they want to win, it’s not like they want to throw the Carabao Cup – when you see the commitment and the reaction in the dressing room after we lost the league game, I knew this group was on the right path. I saw that they were upset, that they could have done a little bit more, they wanted to a be a little bit more in the game until the end. We had the chances but we just didn’t have one or two decisions in our way. They were upset and this is another step forward. Today, we had to play the game that Sheffield United allows you to play and you have to find the moments to do that. It was a completely different game to Anfield and that adaptability is very necessary because in the Premier League you have many different styles and types of games. This is the step that we have to take as a team as well.

    on Hector Bellerin…
There’s no secrets, he’s demanding all the time to do more individual work, to improve in the final third. He’s doing a lot of reviews, a lot of individual defensive work as well in things that he has to improve. When you do that, you get rewarded. Maybe it’s not going to happen in the first week or the first month but over time, he’ll improve. He had a difficult period because he was doubting himself in his head with the amount of time that he’s been here, a lot of things have been happening in the background. I trust him, I know him really well and I know how much he can still improve. He’s showing every day that he’s willing to do it. I’m pleased because I really like him.

on how much of a boost it is that Hector’s stayed…
Yes [I feared he may leave] because I understand that after such a long time at the club, and a lot of things that happened in that trajectory of his development, that he doubted whether he was still OK to continue here, what ambitions he had here, how he can evolve here. But what I liked is that he came to me and said, ‘I can see what we are trying to do here and I’m convinced it’s the right place for me’. Then when you close that window, you can open the next one. He was a completely different player that I could see in training with his energy level as well, and his willingness to work a little bit more all of the time. We need to keep him fit as well, that’s one of the issues he’s had in the last few years because he’s been really unlucky with injuries. You want to have that consistency and at this level of performance, you have to be fit. There’s no other way.

on whether he felt he needed to convince Hector to stay…
I think I have to tell him, first of all that I was very honest with what I said about him. And then I let him think. I wanted him to talk to his family, his people, and he came straight back to me to tell me that he was 100 per cent committed and happy to be here. This is the kind of player we need here. There is no 50:50 or 80:20, we want to do what we want to do and that requires 100 per cent commitment.

  47. I can’t remember the exact game but some of you will. It must have been 5 or so years ago. We were at home against a defenisve team and we were pretty much back and across, back and across for 60 minutes or so and it looked as if it would never happen for us, but then Oxlade Chamberlain scored and not long after we made it two nil. Today reminded me of then.
