Arsenal: Swatting the horrid hornet

@LaboGoon opens the Watford programme

Watford is sitting pretty in top 4 on the Premier League table after six game weeks – ahead of Tottenham, Manutd and Arsenal… who woulda thought that?!

Good day one and all.

The Gunners are six wins on the bounce in all competitions, and are building confidence and progress with each matchday since back-to-back defeats at the start of the season. This afternoon they will look to continue that building process when we host the Hornets at the Emirates Stadium.

Last Sunday vs Everton we had a bid of a shaky start before grabbing all three points; we have to do better though because this Watford side are flying.

There used to be jokes about them being similar to Stoke, however Javi Gracia brought them into the 21st century to make them look tactically disciplined. He didn’t do away completely with the physicallity though,  with the revitalisation of a few of players, he found a way to blend that well with something very energetic.

They are full of confidence and self-belief in their potential and that is something we will need to find a way to cope with, because unlike with the Toffees they are more likely to punish slack defending.

We are showing signs of improvement each week there shouldn’t be reason for apprehension. Our attack is doing as well as we can expect them do and there’s a good spread of goals around the squad. Which should give us an extra edge by not being too reliant on the striking duo of Aubameyang and Lacazette, who are both in pretty good nick at the moment. If we can continue doing that and just find stability and composure in defense… we would be a damn worry for all opponents this season.

I think we are in for an interesting games between the 4th and 6th teams of PL table. They both show a willing to play attacking football which of course brings lots of excitement.

Make no mistake, the Watford attackers will be an obvious test for our defense but the Emirates faithful has always been good to us and will give their all to ensure the momentum keep going against our big talking opponents whom we have beaten in four of the last five PL meetings at home.

    Post update
    Huddersfield 0-2 Spurs
Harry Kane goes down and Huddersfield fans chant ‘cheat, cheat, cheat’.

It’s hardly his fault if Danny Rose went down easily for the penalty…’

Sure that’s how BBC would cover it if it was one of ours

  5. I don’t mind that Laca missed his golden chance, it was the 6 feet wide of the post that grates. We are playing well though, gradually turning the screw.

  7. Final Spurs moan. Kane was in a shit run of form. Back on track now and confidence will be up, thanks to-what- is it two pens (3 in 3 for Spurs) in a week now?

1 was correct, but the point is they get largely ignored for us, and no freebies either.

  26. It’s been pretty laboured again, but you can’t say we’re not resilient (lucky too)! Iwobi’s been decisive. Could be time for him to start games.

  29. FT: Arsenal 2-0 Watford

an OG and Ozil goals give us a win, very scrappy, much to do with an awful ref, it was a battle, Iwobi made a big difference when he came on. 7 wins in a row, 5 in the league. Ozil with his 3rd goal in 4 games. Hard fought and a hard watch at times

  30. The game today reminded me more of the old GG days, not much of the AW swing but more of a grinding it out type game. As long as we keep winning no prob with me! Watford were strong today though, and could have easily banged a few in.
Emerys HT talks seems to do the biz!

  36. Checking in on BBC report quite amusing (when a win confirmed).

Ebullient (punning, exclamation marks aplenty) with any Watford chance. Far less enthusiasm for our attempts, including goals, though they did praise Iwobi for first and say the second was slick.

  37. No Chambers in Fulham squad today.

The hope he’d have a great loan and come back strong, confident and posing a real question for manager not working out so far.

  38. its 7 wins in a row now, but it really does not feel like it, as we have not really turned it on for any long spell in any of our games yet, there are flashes of great play, there is some last ditch defending, but no opponent has been closed out of the game in any meaningful way yet.
If we can get our game really going maybe, just maybe we will have a very big season yet. The question re performance is, which way will we go, will it be that we explode into top form, or will the initial extra effort a new manager often brings, fizzle out and will opponents start to put away the chances we are coughing up to them.

Can we repeat our September winning run in October.

  39. Rich I happened to see Final Score just as they went over to Emirates for Ozil goal, I knew it was an AFC goal by how unhappy the presenter was in tone when saying “another goal at the Emirates”, Watford chances were greeted with more happiness than our actual goal

  40. TBF, I noticed they had Steve Sidwell on co-commentary for 5 Live today. His style is a bit stiff at the moment, but he clearly has a lot of affection for Arsenal.

  42. Ramsey was quite emotional when he was subbed off. I had the sound turned off, so couldn’t get an idea if was for fan support or abuse.

    We just never stopped fighting.
I really like how UE’s tenacity’s rubbing off on our team.
The 1st 45 minutes was a joy for me. The boys all seem bedded in with what the gaffer wants.
Holding was my MOTM over the 90.
5+2 straight wins in a row.
    Well done ARSENAL!

  45. People saying Ramsey was angry. He was not. He was upset. Folks here know it’s no secret I watch him closely. That eye rubbing is a tell, I’ve only seen it a few times. The yellow card that meant he would miss the Euro semi final is the last time I can remember, tbh.

  48. Ramsey Ozil Sanchez made a great team.

Wish Ramsey can stay on and mix it up with the new lads

He has that never say die; fighting spirit that is crucial to a team; Torreira in a way and also Wellbeck remind me of Him a lot. Really wish he would stay! He is an asset all round

  49. You’re right, SR, he was close to tears and struggling to keep it together. And the fucking media is already on it, saying he “snubbed” Emery. Emery patted him on the back. He knew, too. At least he’s getting *some* credit, for “not holding a grudge”, since he cheered the two goals from the bench.
