Good morning friends.
Macey
Nelson Debuchy ElNeny Holding AMN
Coquelin Jack
Theo Giroud Iwobi
Would be my best guess for the starting eleven.
Norwich City F.C. seem to be on a bit of a high, but perhaps they might play a changed team ,as their priority will be the league, and they played a big derby game against Ipswich on Sunday afternoon.
The Giroud /Wilshere combination that gave is this
will be doing their best to do similar. Its not like they don’t make a habit of it
The game isn’t on TV , so good luck finding a stream. We might all be on Arsenal Player though as streams are hard to come by this season.
Enjoy your day and enjoy the game.
FT: Arsenal 1-1 Norwich – game goes to extra time
Nketiah leveled up the game 15 seconds after coming on as a sub, with his first touch.
arsenal were better team in first half but fell behind, but were poor in the second half, poor tempo and passing not sharp enough. Very disappointed with the senior players, Eleney, Jack, Theo and Giroud were all poor, Iwobi buzzed about a lot but his final ball and shooting was off
still all to play for

Apparently you’re allowed a 4th sub in extra time this season in this cup, I’m not sure if that change includes the fa cup.

What a mad, marvellous night that turned into.
Prime material for me to ponder just how influenced I am by score/result as opposed to being capable of judging it purely on the quality of football, effort, ideas, etc.
I was not enjoying the evening much at all, with bad stream luck, lots of frustrations, few players shining and some poor mistakes…then the first, the relief and happiness…from there a thoroughly enjoyable gripping occasion.
Most curious thing for me is that the players I thought were having a bad night all looked pretty good to me after the first, Coquelin included.
So…was it the score what did it (made me a less severe critic, etc), or was it that and the effect of the score on the game? I.e once level and especially once in front, play broke up, no more walls of players to get through and the team and individuals looked much more comfortable with all that precious space to exploit?
Some of A and a lot of B I reckon.
It really isn’t Coq’s forte to try work the ball around when opposition have a lot of players back. I guess if Santi is close to him, with his skills, and his intelligence to understand Coq’s game, it’s a very different matter.

fins Chelsea released Nketiah when he was 15, cos he was too small.
I was worried that his slight frame would hinder his progress as a first team player, but seeing his headed winner, I am more reassured he can make it. I did not realize he was so quick either, but he raced past defenders several times tonight.

Tbh the official didnt call much all night, lots of off the ball stuff he and his assistants either missed or ignored. That was another lesson the youngsters will have to learn some refs will let teams use the dark arts without punishment and then the card count will show we have four bookings from only nine fouls and they only got two from 17.
The media will go on about mo should have got a red and they should of had a pen but really there clutching at straws. Norwich played well but if you play dirty dont complain if you come off the field mucky.
well played all the youngsters but really only Debuchy lived up to his billing from from the senior heads.
Last eight here we come COYG.

Akpom impressed when he came on, some nice inter play, would have liked to see him closer to the goal.
GP so far this season Macey, Sheaf, DaSilva, McGuane, Nketiah, Nelson and Willock have made their debut, last season we had only one young player make his debut, Chris Willock who is now at Benfica.

Be remiss of me with all my ref doubting and hatred not to mention we…did ok with the ref today.
Can’t bring myself to say it was 100% a pen, mostly as in my world the only real pens are when a player goes down naturally, through gravity, while naturally trying to stay on feet and follow ball…but, yeah, that sure is normally a penalty, and against us it feels extraordinary not to get it.
That wasn’t all either- definite yellow for Wilshere first half and Elneny could easily have been off (though yellow right for me).
Norwich fans will be incandescent (but that doesn’t invalidate my usual claims, Anicoll and co, you hear) but to me the guy was pretty consistent in his serious leniency. It led to some very questionable calls but I think plenty of what he let go weren’t actually fouls; we’re just abundantly used to seeing them given as fouls.
As for the dozen or so times they went looking for free kicks which probably weren’t and, amazingly, didn’t get them…jeesus it felt like an alternate, beautiful doomed reality to me.
He’s off Riley’s christmas card list and maybe ref list after that.

An interview with Eddie Nketiah from two years ago, said his speed and finishing were his strengths – he is no liar
In Young Guns, featured first in the official matchday programme, we find out about the next generation of Arsenal youngsters, in their own words. This week we spoke to forward Eddie Nketiah.
The day Arsenal showed they were interested in me was one of the happiest days I can remember. It wasn’t only because I’ve always been an Arsenal fan, but two days earlier I was told that I would be released by Chelsea and not given a scholarship for this season. I was so down, but then Arsenal found out I was available, contacted my family and invited me to train.
There was a massive swing in my emotions and I turned up for training feeling enthusiastic and comfortable in my surroundings. Not only were all the coaches helpful, a lot of the Arsenal players were already friends so I fitted in very quickly. Within a week I was told that I would be offered a scholarship so I was elated.
I think it is important to bounce back quickly from disappointment and Arsenal gave me the opportunity to do that. Now I feel that I have to make the most of every second in training and in games to ensure I can become the best player I can be.
I’ve always been a striker. Chelsea scouted me when I was nine years old when I was playing in a tournament for my Sunday team, called Hillyfielders. I scored a lot of goals in that tournament and they signed me straight away.
I have good pace but I’d say my finishing is my strength. I do practise my finishing a lot and that helps me to be even more instinctive and able to make better choices in a split second. I believe I’m an instinctive finisher and the key is being able to be calm and composed in front of goal, which ensures I never rush my shots.
It’s about timing, and choosing the right type of finish. I score a good percentage of my chances and that comes through a combination of practice, instinct and confidence and everything is going well at the moment. I’m paying particular attention in training to improving my heading from set plays.
I also like to get involved in pressing the opposition high and early. That’s encouraged at Arsenal but that’s how I’ve always been. It’s seen as a defensive job for the striker, but I see it very much as a part of my attacking game.
“So far I feel that I’m on the right track”
Edward Nketiah
Firstly, anything we do to get the ball back quickly and keep the ball in the opposition half means we can create opportunities. Secondly, I’ve scored a lot of goals over the years where I or my team-mates have pressured defenders into a mistake and gone on to score from it.
I like to learn from other strikers. When growing up it was always Thierry Henry when he was with Arsenal. In recent years I’ve watched Luis Suarez a lot. I think he is a very efficient striker who I learn a lot from.
I’ve scored quite a few goals since joining Arsenal and I’ve been happy with the season so far, after a good pre-season. I scored twice against AC Milan for the Under-19s, which helped give me a boost.
There’s a good spirit among the Under-18s and we’ve started quite well. My aim is to establish myself as a regular and do as well as I can to try and feature in the FA Youth Cup squad and Under-19 UEFA Youth League. So far I feel that I’m on the right track.

I hope Mustafi, Chambers and Welbeck are fit by time the QF is played, it would strengthen our starting 11 big time, be it them or guys currently in first 11 dropping down if they take their place
We could have Chambers and Mertesacker in CD instead of Elneny and Debuchy, with MD going RWB or even LWB, Eleney available for CM, Danny wide left,
Ospina
Chambers Mertesacker Holding
Debuchy Elneny Wilshere Iwobi
Walcott Giroud Welbeck
and if Nelson, AMN are in the team, it means the experienced players on the bench, including Coquelin,

Wenger’s after game comments – from football.london
What prompted you to bring on Nketiah?
The fact that we needed to score goals, you know. He can score goals. Overall in the end we had eight strikers on the pitch, basically. He has shown that I know he has the qualities but as well when the team needs you and you can deliver that’s another quality that you don’t know before you put the player on, and he’s shown that.
I like especially the header he scored because he’s not tall. And you see the way he took the header shows he has a fantastic leap and a determined attitude. That shows his character and desire to score.
Does he remind you of Ian Wright?
Let’s not be too quick. One of the problems nowadays is that people are very quick. He has qualities. Top qualities. He is one of the players who was with me in pre-season. That’s why I knew that he could give us something when he came on.
Nketiah the first player to score who has been born since Wenger’s appointment
Unfortunately, that happens now, yes! I must say that I am impressed by that. To think that he was not even conceived when I was already here, but it’s good as well because life gives chance to young people and hopefully he will make a long career at Arsenal football club.
We are proud to give a chance to young players. It is part of our DNA and we want to continue to do that.
What happened to Nketiah at Chelsea?
I don’t know what happened at Chelsea but with us yes sure. He has scored goals at every level and sometimes it is, I don’t know why exactly, they let him go or he decided to leave. I don’t know. You see that more and more nowadays, young people travel from one club to another. I don’t know the real reasons.
You let Harry Kane go…
Well, we didn’t let him go. He was very young. I think he was eight or nine years old but we are happy to have [Nketiah].
Can you remember a young player having such an impact in a game?
No, I can’t remember. In a game like that, no.
What were you thinking – fantastic substitution from me?
No, I honestly felt happy for him and the team. We lacked a bit of ideas. We lacked a bit of clear cut chances. I was impressed by the defensive performance of Norwich. So you think sit there on the bench and think, ‘what can we do to be a bit more dangerous?’ We were in a position to take a big gamble because we are 1-0 down, there’s not much time to go.
I know that he can score goals. I know as well that he has character. He’s not afraid, and that he smells the combination movement. He can give and go, and once a player has that in his game, they have always a chance.
The guys who can understand, activate, give the ball somewhere and they can get it back, and know where to get it back – the quality of a reception is an important quality. I would say that the quality of the reception, he has that.
Would you consider him for Premier League action?
I don’t rule anything out but as I told you he has played today, 40 minutes, and so one of the big problems in modern society – [we must] give him time to develop and not to be too quick about making stars too quickly.
Were you tempted to start him?
Yes but I have players who need competition as well. This team played in Belgrade, a very physical game. We were not completely sharp as we have been last week but these players are likely will be that play in the same position, they need competition.
Big you regret not putting more experience on the bench?
No, the boy Eddie is a good example. If I had experienced players on the bench, strikers for example, I would have put them on, and not Eddie. Here, you have no chance to put an experienced player on so you try to find a young player who can give you a chance, and that’s why we speak about Eddie because there was no experienced player on the bench.
Have you spoken to him after the game?
I haven’t spoken to him, just congratulated him because all the players come in together. I let him cool down a little bit.

It was a strange experience for me watching this game. I usually try to stay positive, but I have to admit to having serious misgivings as the game unfolded. Norwich were playing well, and we seemed to have more perspiration than inspiration, we were just not clicking. As the clock was ticking down, I was thinking ‘has Arsene underestimated Norwich, or overestimated the quality of the B team?’ I was also thinking there were no game-changers on the bench so not sure where a change was going to come from. Then lo and behold, Arsene Wenger throws on Super Eddie. My word, what an introduction from the young man! I was aware of his reputation for being prolific with the youth teams, but to do that with the first team was mightily impressive. I was also very pleased with his maturity towards the end of the match, when he took the ball into the corner rather than trying something risky in an attempt to get his hat-trick. I hope he can keep a level head and keep improving because we could have a gem in our hands.

Debuchy’s fitness tested to max tonight and held up well, but not sure I want to see him in wing back roles for us.
Purely a fitness thing. Have strong memories of that game last year- Utd home?- when he came in from cold on another comeback, started game well and was making full on sprints up and down right. I was almost begging him to take it slightly easier, and sure enough he broke down after not too long.
Not sure you can play wing back for us without that willingness to make full sprints and bomb on when required.
Often wrong, but reckon he may be used only in 3 or as full back should we ever use that again from here-on in.
I find it excellent we can even talk about the guy again. Good story for me every time he pulls on shirt and makes strong contribution like tonight.
Also, I’ll understand and might even be in favour of more experienced team in latter stages, but I won’t half miss seeing raft of youngsters involved. Nothing quite like seeing them get chances and the hopes they bring of producing top players from within.

I thought DaSilva was impressive the short time he was on, looked a far more natural left wing back than either AMN or Iwobi were before him. He looks very fast too, and is well built. Wenger said earlier today that Josh only needs to add confidence and he will take a major step forward in his career.
Might be time to give AMN a midfield slot, Wenger once again today said that Ainsley is mighty close to getting a first team spot, and that CM is his best position, he actually warned the senior players to watch out or AMN will take their place.

well rich it shows the strength of the squad we now have, despite Mustafi, Chambers, Santi and Welbeck out injured, not forgetting Jeff out injured too, that we can still field such a talented side tonight and have all four subs who came on make an impact.
by the way on the topic of 4 subs, I see some journos shit stirring, suggesting that AFC would be thrown out of the CC for bringing on 2 of the 4 in extra time, well I say shit stirring, they might have only been showing their own lack of knowledge about the rules.

on the subject of Debuchy, for me he was the only senior player who tonight could be said to have pushed his claims for a starting spot in our league team, all the rest were well below par, Iwobi was the pick of the others, but his final ball and shooting was well off.
I think Wilshere’s performance will have shut up a lot of those twitter/blogging experts who were demanding he start ahead of Ramsey or Ozil, not forgetting some even suggest he should take Xhaka’s place.

Think a lot of what you describe is down to how different and damn difficult it is to play against banks of players versus an open game.
Norwich creating a few excellent chances on break could easily lead to conclusion they played perfectly- i.e strong in defence and attack- and I suppose they did, but for most part emphasis of their game was massively on defence. Fair enough and pretty inevitable.
Still, it left us with that familiar challenge of spending huge amounts of game trying to break it down, while also rightly being worried about their effectiveness on breaks. We found it tough going.
My memories of game are of it being drastically different after the equaliser- good play, excitement and plenty of chances. Space, space, space. Glorious space. No way we get anything much like that should they remain ahead.
Crux of it for me is that it’s a hard balance in those games from offset, scores level, trying to take initiative, as we must, committing numbers forward, building up rhythm, trying to probe, mix it up, move them, etc…while trying not to let them get that opening goal which puts us in a heap of trouble, or at least is a near guarantee of frustration and nervousness for team and crowd up to the point we can find an equaliser.
Team needs to be completely in the groove to provide good entertainment and actually play well- creating good openings basically- when faced with a defensive well-drilled team who have a lead to protect.
Given all that, I’d really like to see us become a bit more wary of the consequences of conceding first. Much much easier said than done, while staying true to an attacking philosophy but the gains could be gigantic if we can. That said, probably a more realistic aim for A team than mixed team like tonight.

Absolutely spot on Rich. We were like a different team after the equalizer, suddenly all this space opened up and we were much more threatening.
I know the ASB have nothing good to say about Theo, but name me one other striker that is such a team player he would willingly play right back when we switched to 4-4-2 late on? And he did not make a bad job of it. You need players like that sometimes. He may not have scored, but he made a valuable contribution to the overall team play.

Took me ages to realise Theo had gone right back. I knew someone had to have moved into strange-for-them position, and thought Iwobi was left wing back but didn’t twig till late on Theo had dropped all the way back.
Looked like he approached task in just the right way.
Brings me back to my main thinking point of night: whether we – everyone, Coq, Iwobi, Jack, Giroud, Theo at right back- simply played so much better after 1-1, or whether it was that and the effects of the score and match situation on how I/ many tend to judge players and the game.
When we’re behind, not only is the match situation a tough one these days, with most teams having done so much work on getting people behind ball, but, in my case, the tension as a fan is pretty horrible and ,crucially, this can lead to every little mistake causing an involuntary groan, silent or otherwise.
Level or ahead, it’s not like that at all.
That said, I genuinely think those senior players I mention all did play much better in the late stages of game, and it was mostly down to the change in approach our first forced on a tiring Norwich.
That thrilling moment when someone- almost certain Nketiah again- pushed the ball past a defender from way out and sprinted past to get a shot away, just one good example of something that can’t happen if we’re behind
In Theo’s case, I think he’s always up against it trying to play through deep packed defences. Just not his forte, though that doesn’t mean he can’t have his good moments.
