Arsenal : When you find yourself going through Hell, keep going

the_perfect_strorm_image

Good Morning Positivistas,

What a night ! A delicious opportunity to reel in Tottingham and Leicester thrown away, three points that is seemed we must pick up during a good first half performance surrendered to Swansea. The evening ended with a number of players slumped, and I imagine that physical deflation was multiplied by the thousand across the fans in every corner. Even the invariably polite and articulate Arsene cracked in front of the camera. I know it took me a moment to compose myself.

Looking at the football we played I thought much of it was genuinely good. Joel Campbell was a constant attacking threat and always involved. His goal was smoother than a ripe little peach. Ramsey and Ozil worked hard and pulled the Swansea defence about all evening, Giroo provided the target around which our efforts pivoted. Did we make chances ? Oh yes, we made chance after chance. The content of the game reminded me of our thriller at the King Power at the end of September. 5-2 that finished, goals galore, Theo, Olivier and a treble from the irrepressible Chilean, a happy afternoon. If the sun shone brightly that day the weather had changed by 9.40 last night !

We find ourselves in the “perfect storm”.

A set of strikers who create chances but manage to batter only the woodwork into submission, who put the ball a millimetre to the left when a millimetre to the right is required, and often run into a keeper apparently equipped with eight tentacles rather than the standard two hands and big gloves. For the moment we can’t get the ball in the goal, or I should say more accurately we can’t get the ball in the goal enough times to overcome the effect of our second current malaise.

Allied with that misfiring offensive equipment we have a defence that seems to have lost its confidence, particularly whichever two central defenders find themselves on duty. Whether it is Per, Kosc or Gabriel when then are subject to direct aggressive attack by the opposition, when their equilibrium is upset, they seem to lapse into panic. If there is a defensive ‘plan’ (and I am sure there is) it seems to disintegrate within moments. And as their nervousness grows the opposition take advantage of the gaps and errors that such skittishness causes. Last night even the great Petr fell victim to the collective madness. Do I exaggerate ? Perhaps, but in recent games there have been a number of grim examples of allowing the attackers to take the ball, and the game away from us.

And yet, despite the footballing equivalent of Scylla and Charybdis, we sit still third in the League. Six points adrift but with ten games to go. To listen to some it might as well be sixteen points. Nonsense I say. With no side truly dominant in terms of form that the Premier League could/should be written off is absurd. If we were six points clear with ten games to go you and I know we would be nervously casting glances over our shoulder, and rightly so. There is much work to be done, to recover confidence, to re-sharpen technique. Do it again, do it better.

The North London Derby but three days away. Always a key fixture but this year….. ! Both sides frantic to secure the three points, both still in the chase for the title. There is no magic pill, no miracle panacea, we face a long march up a steep road, with the precipice of defeat a step away. The players must work hard, regain their optimism, and not give up, indeed never, ever give up. Will you join them ?

  1. Old fart’s thoughts:
When you watch your best player on the night being substituted, the question must be asked if it is just the players who are not performing. Not only did it leave Mesut nobody to pass to with the hope that something positive might arise, but it left us with a punch drunk bunch who might well be embarrassed by a championship side based on the way we’re currently playing.

Sure hitting the woodwork 3 times didn’t help, neither did Ref. Madely’s inability to see the foul on Oz that directly led to Swansea’s equalizer. And Madely is one of the better refs we’ve seen this season.

We started brightly enough and with Alexis supplying a lovely pass to Joel who scored with nonchalance, it looked as though we were over the punch drunk scenario of the past several games and at long last, we might enjoy a goal fest. Ho bloody ho.
Back into play came the hermit crabs and Swansea started to play in our half. Why did we let them. Honestly it’s beyond me. This wasn’t even a full strength Swansea side ffs.

Whether Petr was injured before, during or after their winner wasn’t quite clear…suffice to say it was as big a shock to see him make an error. He’s been spoiling us. So it’s going to be Ooosp in goal on Saturday. Who else will be playing is very debateable. Few of them deserve to retain their places.

Thinking of Saturday, maybe there’s a way to get some pleasure out of it. Have a massive bet on the spuds to win (draw no bet). Then if we win, the money will be irrelevant. If we lose, at least you can enjoy the proceeds.

    Regardless, Keep the faith.

  4. My guess is that if Jack and Santi and Rosicky ( or even one of the three) had been fit over the past few weeks then they would have had plenty of game time and Ozil and Aaron would not look so knackered. The problem is they ain’t been fit Gf60 and we have had to go back time and time again to those two. I really don’t think Iwobi could do much better, good prospect though he is.

Regarding changes on Saturday I would not be at all surprised to see Flamini or Eleneny added to the central midfield alongside Le Coq to play with two ball winners. I anticipate a muscular contest and one in which retaining the ball, possession, will give one side or the other that edge to win. Joel will surely start at the Lane although Danny has done well. From what was said Campbell’s withdrawal last night was a precaution – as matters turned out it seemed a mistake but against Leicester Danny came on and nicked the winner. Last night a very similar header from Welbeck in the closing minute drifted half a foot past Fabianski’s post – the distance between success and failure.

  6. of course we are still in the title race, but if form does not improve dramatically we will not win it. We have ten games left, in our last ten games we have picked up 15pts

in their last 10 games Leicester have picked up 19, while Spurs have picked up 22.

in the ten games we have scored 13 goals, conceded 10, we have failed to score in 3 of the 10 games, and kept clean sheets in 5 of the games, we have conceded 3 goals twice, and 2 goals once
We have only won one game in the last 10 where we have conceded a goal, the 2-1 win over Leicester City. and we have had two 0-0 draws.

As stated in the article, not only is our attack misfiring, but our defense has a crisis of confidence, I think Swansea had 2 shots on target last night, and scored both. Teams look like they know that if they hang in against us they have a good chance to score, while at the same time we look like if we don’t score to make it 2-0 worry has set in, and it turns to panic. Then our midfield look like they are running in treacle and our forwards look like they are afraid to shoot.
Last night with us losing and time running out, a piece of play out on our left summed up what has happened us far too often on this run, with a goal needed, and several attackers in and around the box, Monreal and Ozil passed the ball over and back across about ten yards, 8 times, before an attempt to put the ball into the area was made, the attempt was knocked out for a corner, a corner we totally fucked up.

Arsenal have 9pts (10 goals scored, 10 goals conceded),
LCFC have 17pts (14 goals scored, 6 goals conceded),
Spurs have 18pts,(15 goals scored, 6 goals conceded)

Lucky enough to be at the #LCFC game on Tues and then the #AFC game last night. As a neutral at both, the fan experience was chalk & cheese
The King Power was buzzing with positivity & fun, cheering a team who showed no fear. A Club on a remarkable journey: wonderful to witness.
The emirates support went from thinly veiled frustration to poisonous vitriol. On the pitch there was no one brave enough to lead by example

  12. There is no other way. Its that time when the tough (be they gooners or gunners) should get going, kicking! Everybody – on the pitch, bench, box and stands give their utmost toward that common goal of savouring the thrill of WINNING THE EPL.
I wonder, given the current torrent of disappointment and negative feelings, if it wouldn’t be beneficial for Wenger to call in sick for the spurs game?

  13. Notice when we perceive something is “bad” or not to going to how we wish that our egos lock on to it, and try to change it,even though because its in the past theres no way to change the facts of whats happened, But we can change how we perceive those facts.
We think, which leads to an emotion which is based on another idea of how things should be and then how another set of emotions should entail. But that points to other thoughts from other people thinking for you.Now you can say it works both ways. But not buying into the idea that you have to be upset or frustrated means that you can deal with the facts of the past and not be beholden to them, but also you can deal with the next set of facts that must be dealt with. But by already being beholden to the emotion of thought to a reaction (the mortar with the pestle is the brew that is true?Or the flagon with the dragon is the brew that is true?) means that you cant deal with the next facts.
The mourning process for the great loss of the men kicking the ball into the net can be over with very quickly, you just have to allow yourself to do it.How? See that its bullshit, and then think of something great. And again and again until you feel good( like that I knew that you would) and suddenly you are in a better feeling of energy, and seeing as our old pal the universe is just that, then the energy can be used to what? Why feel better and then have more of a chance to win the game of the men kicking the ball around and into the net,so that we can jump around and think we are the best(oh the illusory lie of relativity!)
The best? Until when August 2016? And after that. Its important to see the trap, its like being trapped on Ixions wheel.Spin on! Spin on!
Plus what can we win with negativity? Think about how you vibrate in negative energy.Fuck off Mills you say, who do you think you are the Beach Boy?No by basic physics says all be vibrating, but at different speeds. So when you vibrate at the shit end of the Roman bog roll then you can expect to do fuck-all.So all Goonersville is vibrating in shit at the moment, grumbling and muttering, spitting and coughing. What good is that?None.”But I feel better some say”. Do you really? mmm, sounds like the excuse to stay negative. So you really like feeling negative.Negativity cannot get rid of negativity.
And lets face it now everyone’s negative about going over to the Coop, that nice nest of friendly chappies, and if they beat us they might be on for winning the league for the first time since around 25,000 bce and that means…shame! Another wanker vibration is the old shame. It cripples, it burns, it bites. As long as you let it.By going into that game with shame already puts those Poultry Poopers above us mentally.
So in the world scwap of vibration it seems that its better to feel good( like I know that you should) in order to achieve easily.Ok you no-a believe me?Examine how a team gets on a roll then examine the driving forces in that. You think its because they boo each other and call each other words associated with genitalia or them effluvia forces of the botty sphincter? Nein, Ladies and Gentlemen, it aint so!
Why sit in the Swan shit for longer than you have to? You dont even have to now.Lets face it in a few days you wont. And if we beat the Chickens then we will feel good.Which is as daft as feeling all aggitarian against the facts of the Swans game.A game? Or a matter of something else? A game, but with forces projected on it.
Whats this got to do with me you ask? Mind be energy, all energy is matter, what are you doing with that energy and matter?

  14. The ‘interesting’ things about the number of points per season eddy is two fold.

In comparison to the past two seasons Leicester’s current 57 points is meagre, the equivalent last season was Chelsea with 66 and the year before Citeh had 63 after 28 games. If we are below our previous total so are the leaders by 6-11 points.

I have not looked further but I suspect if I did it would show the same 6-11 point deficit this year compared to seasons further back.

Second, for a long long while we were told by the media experts/uber bloggers that the crucial failing in Arsenal’s title challenge was our failure to beat, or indeed take a point from other top 4 rivals. Well this year we have defeated the leaders twice, beaten Citeh in the single game so far, and drawn with Spuds. Admittedly with two games to go the series ain’t done but even so the notion that it was/ or is competing with the ‘top teams’ that lets us down, that we fail in the head to head contests with rivals does not stand up.

  18. anicol we may be doing better against this seasons top 4, but we have lots twice to chelsea, drawn twice with liverpool and lost once to man utd, 3 teams that would be seen as top teams in recent years, 5pts from 18 against these so called top teams, and I’d have no doubt that the players would see all 3 of those teams as top teams, Wenger certainly has this season claimed all 3 to be top teams. So the argument is still there that we have problems beating the top teams. Also we have drawn with spurs, lets see us show we can do it against a big rival on saturday, we have traditionally done well against LCFC and even Man City,

as for the drop in points at the top, well isn’t that all the more reason for the annoyance of Arsenal dropping their point total too, when any of our better points seasons over the last 12 years would see us running away with the title this year. and even our ordinary point total would see us closer to the top.
the team has cracked almost every time this season when given the opportunity to go top, or like now, make up ground on the top team, as I said a couple of days ago when the argument was put forward that the teams poor performances/results are down to pressure, that if they can’t handle the pressure 14, 13, 12, 11 games out, then its time to give up on us winning the title as the pressure will only be greater as each game passes and we are running out of games to make up the difference.

Our run of results over the last 8-11 BPL games is as bad if not worse than any run of 8-11 league games under Wenger,

  19. season 2011/12, the one with the awful start, including the 8-2 at utd, we still had more pts after those first 8 games than we have taken in our last 8 games.
That season we also had a second awful run of 8 games, where we picked up only 8pts,(1pt less than our current run) including a run of 3 defeats in a row, I think this is the only season in Wenger’s time we have lost 3 league game in a row,

  20. Either teams are ‘top teams’ in the sense the are rivals for the title that season in which you are playing them, or they are not eddy. I really don’t think Chelsea, Manyoo or Liverpool are, or ever were this season, genuine title contenders.

Do we get more annoyed because our total points is below that of last 2 years, even though every top four rival’s total points I are also below the figures in previous seasons ? I dunno – It is an unexpected phenomena with all of the top clubs, Citeh, Leicester, Spuds, as well as us not securing points in games we expect to – should all the fans of the clubs get annoyed or “angry” !?!

  21. the thing about the “top teams”, is that Man Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool would always have been viewed by our players as being top teams, you could use the word “traditional” in this regard, and our record against them this season is 3 defeats, 2 draws and 1 win, and 2 of this seasons direct rivals Leicester and Man city, we have traditionally had an outstanding record against them, its something like 20 years and 20 games since LCFC beat us, and we have a great record v Man city with only the 6-3 defeat a couple of years ago as a major blot on the copybook, its the same with spurs, we have a good record over the last 20 years v spurs.
So the argument can be made that our squad still has a mental problem against big clubs, especially the ones we have really struggled against in the last ten years or so, even when these clubs are struggling like at no other time in those ten years – CFC twice this season, and man u last week and man u under moyes.

the back to back FA Cups was meant to give this squad the belief that they are winners, and for them to take the next step, but so often this season Wenger has stated that the team lacks confidence and belief, and now there are reports that Alexis has said that the team lack confidence and the belief to win the title.
If it is the case that this squad has not got the confidence and belief, then really it is a case of there being a need for massive chances, be that a massive overhaul of the squad alone, or one with a change of manger too.
This is a low points season, and if this squad can’t do it this season, coming off back to back FA Cups, then why should we think they will have it in a normal points season.
the squad seem unable to handle the pressure of expectations. Clearly a highly talented bunch of players, but its like they get paralysed by fear of failure, a self-fulfilling prophecy if you like.

Perhaps you should consider that there are millions of arsenal fans who are positive about arsenal and see the potential of the club being realised soon. But who equally know that will only happen with new leadership.

  26. I’m not on twitter, but I do view it, but yes anicol, we have lots of mad fuckers on twitter, but in the media view only Arsenal should be ashamed if lcfc or thfc win the league, its only us who under performed enough to let them do it, if they do.

I see the levels of supporter we have at AFC has hit new lows, wanting Arsenal to lose, even the Gooner Fanzine expressed the view that they did not want AFC to get the draw last night, and we today have so many expressing the view that anyone who does not want Wenger out right now, is not an arsenal supporter.
It seems that not even the recent history of Man Utd have taught our fans anything, they will not be happy till we are finishing 12th, always behind spurs, half empty stadium, and only dreaming of a good cup run, but i suppose if we spend lots of money on transfers and change the manager every two seasons, they will be happy.

I also once again find it laughable that the Dein back boys are out in force, the very people who denounce Stan and even some of them denounce our fat Russian (no George not Arshavin but Usmanov), but it always escapes their attention that Dein is the man directly responsible for both Kroenke and Usmanov being involved in AFC.
This lot don’t like Gazidis cos he is a savy media man, exactly as Dein was. It is also funny that nearly all the bring Dein back guys are Wenger haters, again a man who would not be at AFC if it had not been for Dein. Looking at it, one would be forgiven for thinking a lot of these guys are very conflicted and confused or just downright hypocrites

  27. Question is, how bad are things really? Still in three competitions. But lets ignore that eh?

This is more about people’s personal shame, embarrassment and the false feeling of being superior because of our basic herd wiring.

Many people think we were “shit” last night, which is an incomplete analysis of the game. The stats also tell a very different story,as did Joel exceptional goal. What was “shit” was losing, but when has it ever been anything else?
Could easily have been 4-2, had the woodwork not got in the way, then the unhappy fans would have been feeling good.

The people who want immediate change (so that they dont feel hurt)and cry for Wenger out have no idea of the consequences at this point of the season. Who can also tell the damage thats been done after all three games through media outlets.

But regardless we are still in three competitions. And thats one heck of a good team.
How does anyone actually know if things might not work out fine, in all three competitions?
“But how can we beat Barca?” is the cry. But the same voices said “how can we beat Bayern?” And we did 0-2.The German commentators last night were shitting it in that game after the second goal, and I mean shitting it incase a third went in,they knew it was possible.
    All is possible.

  28. That is fine SG – as I said I have no reason to think you are not sincere, you may even by correct.

To put you in the picture though PA is a site on which we try to support the players, the manager and the cub in a constructive way. That is not to say we are not as disappointed or frustrated as the next fan after a defeat, or as pleased when we win. What is different here is that we do not ever launch into attacks on players, manager or anyone else, or demand that this sacking or that signing will magically transform the club, its fortunes or anything else. We do not move from manufactured grievance to manufactured grievance. We do not pore endlessly over accounts we do not understand and expend thousands of words on our ignorant interpretation of the figures.

We enjoy football, we enjoy Arsenal, or at least we do our best to enjoy. There are loads of other sites like that in which the most extreme forms of comment or abuse is encouraged, as I am sure you know, and if that is your particular take on football and Arsenal that is fine. However it will not be published here.

I will add the following to Anicoll’s response. On PA we insist on evidence-based opinion and criticism. There is little I appreciate more than good, informed discussion. It’s how we learn and progress after all, even with a subject of low importance in the overall scheme of things, as football. There are a myriad blogs for venting off steam, slagging off the players, manager and board, but not here. Sometimes we get close, but then we remember what we are about.

  30. Interesting to see, via social media, the number of Arsenal fans who say they have reached that “Fuck it” moment, followed by the “I’ve never going back there again until ……X happens”. It is fascinating the number who say their revelation has come about not as a result of last night’s defeat, or a string of dodgy results. No they say they have finally seem the light, in the form of the control of football by the forces of international capital, in this case Syrupy Stan. Wenger must leave. At least half a dozen players sat least with him. The entire squad ( virtually) must be replaced. We must stand to to toe with Bayern and Barca and win. The theme of moral degeneration is a front and centre!

In times gone by the “Fuck it” used to happen all the time as far as I remember. ” Ive had enough”. Individuals would often storm off, regularly in some cases, after a defeat. At least in those days they would however admit that their decision was based on the disappointment of a few bad results and worse performances, and they could not stand the pain, rather than dreaming up some high sounding nonsense. They have to blame someone for feeling bad, for being disappointed.

A few weeks/months later they would usually slink back as fortune turned.

Some people in those days, and more so these days apparently, just don’t know how to lose.

  31. I certainly know that feeling Andy Nic: we have all had those moments. Funnily enough, my problem at the moment is not with watching the team and coping with the inevitable disappointments. I think in my heart of hearts I always expect them to lose anyhow, given that I only really started to support them when they were pretty dire. No, what I find hard to stomach is the hate and poison surrounding it all.

I went out for a beer and a curry last night with a couple of old Arsenal supporting mates and the winning Swansea goal merely led to a resigned shrug, a discussion of past famous moments when we’ve fucked it up, an acknowledgment that the fates are always against us and the realisation that it is the hope that kills you and that you were probably better off supporting Aston Villa because then at least you would know where you were. And then the conversation drifted to things other than football, via a discussion of Philip Kerr and a reasonably pleasant evening was had by one and all.

Of course I then made the fatal mistake of reading a couple of match reviews this morning and following a nasty thread of comments on the Untold site and I ended up feeling totally wretched about the whole business. How can people get so cross, how can they be so convinced that they know all the answers? And that’s the trouble with online and the explosion of media – but it certainly spoils it for me far more than dropped points at home.

Wenger a man who has given 20 years service to the club is demonized, nothing but insults are spouted. To me it is a real sign that a lot of those that do it, have not the ability to put forward reasoned argument, or debate with those that do not agree with them. We have what should be grown men, acting and commenting like pre pubescent children having an argument in the play ground. The sort of hate and insults directed at the Arsenal target of their choice, is more akin to what would normally be aimed at mass murderers, child killers, and the worst scum of our society, and not at a football manager, player, CEO, or Shareholder. I have often asked the question, if a person can be so aggressive towards a football club employee, and in fact an employee of the club one professes to support and love, then what sort of reaction to these people have towards the politicians and bankers etc etc that have negative effects on their actual lives, like higher taxes, poor health care, unsafe communities, global warming, pollution, bringing your nation to war so rich men can get richer. where is their outrage on real life issues. not a fucking word from them, no banners, no protests.

But when it come to Arsenal, we have the lot, protest groups, petitions, endless blogs, AFTV, and insults galore.

Isn’t that really odd behavior, how does it actually work that you claim to be an Arsenal supporter, writing a blog about Arsenal, and when Arsenal win a game, not as much as a comment, but anything less than a win, and low and behold, another article condemning one or more aspects of the team, management or club. Maybe its just another anti Arsenal blog run by a non Arsenal fan, like ANR, but at least with Myles Palmer he admits he is not an Arsenal fan.

  42. My only unhappiness is knowing this team is so much more capable of better things than they have served up in recent times even in spite of the refs… i recall that foul on ozil and also thought Ashley was off side

on both occasions we did not play to the whistle, and we really should have had 4 goals by then and so that would have been a a consolation rather than the winner…

a little more calms and a little more composure and we will be there, there are still 30 points to play for other will drop just that we should be in a position to take advantage!

  43. Very good write up Andrew, well played.

Tricky times, hysterical fans showing themselves up on a daily basis yet the club have everything to play for.

Sometimes feels like we need ten years spent hovering outside the relegation zone to purge us of the idiots infecting the club with their bile and angry nonsense. They are doing a wonderful job assisting our opponents, running down a squad that is still in with a shout in all meaningful competitions in early March.

    Grow a backbone, for Chrissakes.

  44. FH, half of those trolls on UA aren’t even Arsenal fans, clearly a couple using multi IDs that go on about spurs all the time. Probably the sort of people who will be spitting at our fans around WHLthis weekend.

  48. Thanks to my satellite provider despite properly programming my DVR to tape the game I arrived home to see LFC vs MCFC recorded and ready for viewing. I can only conclude that I was not destined to suffer through this one. You guys have no idea how this hurts.

  49. Strange, just about every arsenal critic whether in forums or in the media mentions the film groundhog day. Almost as if they are reading off exactly the same script. You could devise some sort of media bingo game based on how often this film is mentioned.
The latest to latch on is idiot journalist john cross, especially vitriolic at the moment …shame so many if our fans cannot see the media for what they are, even those who work for them

  50. Notoverthehill-I was also thinking yesterday of a Arsenal song in the Dads Army vein..couldnt get beyond;
“Who do you thinking you are kidding Mr.Tottenham if you think old Arsenals done”.

If we win the Cup again this year will that also count as groundhog day?
