Arsenal must win The Europa League

In todays podcast @shotta_gooner and I look at recent results and performances and discuss how vital winning the Europa League is to Arsenal’s, Arteta’s and the players future. Also how par for Arsenal is being 5th and 5th most likely to win any domestic competition, every single season.

Pedantic George.

Wednesday 12th May 2021 (originally Saturday 15th May)
    Kick-off: 8.15pm
    Live on: SKY SPORTS

Matchweeks 36 and 37 have been rescheduled to provide an opportunity for each club to welcome the safe return of supporters before the end of the season, subject to the government’s further easing of lockdown restrictions.

Matchweek 37 will take place in the midweek of 18/19 May. Further details regarding Matchweek 37 will be announced in due course.

The ‘standard’ TV selections have now been made up to and including 16th May 2021. Ordinarily, fixtures up to this date will not now change. However, as ever, all fixtures remain subject to change and circumstances may yet arise which result in further fixture changes.

this now means that the only date for the Man Utd V Liverpool game that was postponed on Sunday, is the weekend of 15/16 of May

France Football (FF) : A well-informed source told FF that Thierry Henry was involved in the takeover discussions with Daniel Ek ONLY after Ek’s tweet about acquiring the London club. it’s therefore not be the application of a long-standing strategy but rather a tactical move

  4. Lot of really great points and analysis on the podcast- shame its not on YT, not for the “fame game” but because a) lots of other people wouldnt feel alone and would enjoy listening in because its not the same old toxic whiff that comes from the pen and mouth of most Arsenal outlets and b) it will get on the nerves of the goons. Gooners the might say they are but goons they are. This would challenge their shallow thinking a bit.

Even if we cant get the spends, at least you would hope a manger/coach would come in and get the team playing together, thinking together, rather than not knowing where each and everyone else is in a game, like the lost tribe of Arsenal.Even if we’er panst until something gives in all this bs, a bit of unity would go a long way to at least making it difficult for other clubs to beat us, instead of lying down and thinking of whatever people think about these days.
Not so long back the team was coherent, under the manager that had apparently lost touch with the game…makes you puke to think of the players that went since the end of the Weng days.

    Cheers G+S.

  15. We’re looking to turn our Europa League semi-final tie around on Thursday, when we host Villarreal in the second leg at Emirates Stadium.

And ahead of the game, our manager sat down for a virtual press conference where he was asked about team news, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and much more.

    Here’s every word from Wednesday’s pre-match media.

    on team news…
We will see today. We are training this afternoon so we will see how everybody is.

on criticism over last week’s false nine…
Criticism is part of the job and normally comes when you lose. We all know that.

on the balance of the tie…
It’s time to change it. We have to embrace the challenge and the opportunity we have ahead. I think it’s the 10th time that the club has been in a European semi-final, so it doesn’t happen very often. We have to take the opportunity tomorrow and earn the right to be in the final.

on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Kieran Tierney…
Let’s see today how everybody is in training.

on having a clean sweep of English European finalists…
I think that would be a really good sign for English football.

on whether takeover rumours are helpful ahead of a semi-final…
We have to try to be away from all the rumours and everything that is happening around the club, and just focus on the pitch. The best way to help the club to be in the best possible position is to win football matches and be competitive at the highest level.

on whether he has spoken to anyone involved in the rumoured takeover bid…
    No.

on whether he has been in touch with the Kroenke family…
They’ve been in touch with us in the last week or so, and in a really convincing way as I already said last week.

on how big this game is for the club in the short and long-term…
It’s a massive game for everybody but in particular for the club because we are here representing a football club and our fans. What we want to do is to do it in the best way by winning trophies. If we win tomorrow, we will be much closer to getting another trophy. This is the only aim and the purpose of us being here.

on whether this game will dictate our summer plans…
I don’t know. It’s difficult to respond to that. What I can say is that winning always helps for the future. It’s the best way to prepare anything for the future.

on how often he speaks with the Kroenke family…
Often enough. The rest, like Vinai, Tim and Edu, do it as well really often. There is a really good communication line.

on how crucial our away goal is…
It is always really important. We obviously didn’t get the result that we wanted but with the context and the situation that happened during the game, we got out of that situation in a pretty good way considering the circumstances and playing 40 minutes with 10 men.

on whether criticism towards Aubameyang has been harsh…
Again, [pundits] are all the time free to talk. My job, my responsibility, is to protect our players and try to get the maximum out of them. We know certain things that the outside world doesn’t know. They can comment but sometimes without knowing all the details, which is a little bit unfair for the people. We make decisions that sometimes people are judging but without really knowing the detail. That criticism is part of our job.

on how he is after Sunday…
He played well and he felt much better than the days before that. Obviously, scoring a goal is really important for him as well, so he’s in a good place.

on fans planning to come to the ground again to protest…
I think that they have to be able to express themselves and if it’s done in a specific way, then they have the right to do it. We have to prepare for the game in the best possible way, I wouldn’t like to use any excuses. If something happens with that, then I know that the only purpose of the fans is to defend the club and that they want the best for the team. We will try to do the same.

on his thoughts on the idea of fans cheering the players into the ground…
I think that would be great. We’ve been missing them so much, we need them. If the players and the team feels that they are right behind them, supporting them, again I think it’s the 10th time the club is playing in a European semi-final, so it’s a big moment for us. Hopefully we can have them closer than we have in the last few months.

on whether this is the biggest game of his managerial career so far…
Well, it’s a big moment again. Not for me, but for the club and for everything that has happened in the last two years and the last months. All the instability that we’ve been living with for many different reasons. So I think it will be really important and a big step forward if we are able to be in that final and have the opportunity to win that trophy.

on whether it’s acceptable for a club like Arsenal to have been out of the Champions League for five years…
It’s a reality. It’s not what we want, obviously, but there are a lot of things that have happened in that period, for many reasons. One is because the level is being raised to a level that is unprecedented in this league and we are not the only club that has been out of that. But obviously, we’re not going to accept that situation and we want to change it straight away. This season, we still have the opportunity to do that.

on whether the result of the game will determine whether we’ve had a good season or not…
Well it would be judged like this, that’s for sure. How good of a job you are doing is determined by many factors, by different people. Externally it’s only by whether you win or lose, those are the defining moments.

on the lack of rotation at left-back and if that’s been to help Granit to adapt to the position…
It’s been one of the reasons, because of the way we wanted to play and the players around. We have managed to get some clean sheets since he’s been playing there and that’s something that didn’t happen for 13 games. He gives something different to the team.

on Cedric playing regularly in January and February but less regularly since and what he needs to do…
Well, he’s been a bit unfortunate because he played some good games as a right-back as well and then we had the injury of Kieran and he played some as a left-back and we were training with him as a left-back. We could have given him more opportunities, but it’s true that Calum came in and did really well.

    on defensive struggles at home…
There have been many factors. Errors has been one of the main ones. We have conceded some set-pieces as well and with other teams not creating much, they have managed to score a goal.

on coaching errors out of players…
I would say it is almost impossible. That’s part of football and mistakes are part of any sport and I think it’s the hardest thing to coach.

    on David Luiz’s injury…
No [there is no update]. He was feeling better yesterday. Let’s see how he is today. We don’t know the extent of the injury yet.

on if there’s a chance he could play tomorrow…
With David it’s always possible because he wants to be available. He’s made an incredible effort to be in the position that he’s in today and the fact that he played against Newcastle was already a big bonus. He had surgery on his knee so with David, you never know.

On if the stage is set for Aubameyang tomorrow night…
This game always gives you another opportunity. If you are there, then you are ready for the taking. He can turn things around really quickly so hopefully we can see that tomorrow.

on this being this group’s last chance to win a trophy for Arsenal…
I don’t want to think like that. I want to think they always have the hunger to win any competition that they’re involved in. It’s true for some players that this might be the last season for different reasons and I can see how much it means for them. How much they want it and hopefully, we can do that tomorrow.

on what kind of match he’s expecting…
I’m not sure how they’re preparing for the game. I think we spoke about this before the first leg and obviously, we conceded an early goal and that changed the game. Then there was a second one from a set play as well. We then had to play 40 minutes with 10 men and we’ll see what happens. We have an idea of what they might try to do and we know what we want to do in order to get through. Then, of course, there are many games within the game tomorrow.

on what the key will be to turning the tie around…
We need to play better than we did in Villarreal. We’re going to start with 11 players, something that we didn’t have a chance to do in the last game and then we’ll see what happens. There’ll be many factors that come into it.

  16. so now the Ek takeover PR is suggesting that Wenger will be part of the ex Arsenal guys who are part of this bid. Although they have made it clear that none of Henry, Vieira, Bergkamp and Wenger would actually be putting any money into the takeover bid. So just token figureheads, same as their talks with AST, its only being done to curry favor with the wider Arsenal fan base and the media.

  18. Sometimes I wonder what the point in the presser? The hacks ask questions they know theyre not going to get honest answers to, I know some of its supposed to be a poker style face off re whose available and who isnt so that Dick Emery has a clue, but Arsenal are so erratic under Areta that that should keep him on his toes.Plus lets face who really cares until the teams are announced, it only seems to waste more time speculating filling up the great void of life before we all pop our cloggs?
The coaches/ managers have to speak in ideological bs or the boring politikal non/ avoidance answer to keep upstairs happy. I wonder if Arteta has been told off after his Ö gossip recently?
The paradox of our time is that opinions rule sthe roost and the democractic card is laid out for liberty of speech but those wo challenge the latest pseudo authority must apologise if the mob arent getting their din dins. Soon the palyers will be apologising pubically for losing games to places like aftv. Yet looking back its sort of happened already.

Imagine if the presser was an honest affair:

on what kind of match he’s expecting…

erm, it will be awful, two boring teams average managers, and a boring cup competition everyones a tool.I expect Arsenal to lose. Its my game plan. By losing I know that we won in another dimension where things are playing out in different varients. Thats what David Icke told me.

on this being this group’s last chance to win a trophy for Arsenal…

Come on guy, we can still win the summer transfer trophy, know what an mean an that?Thats big stuff, always a sign of whats to come in the season…

on if there’s a chance he could play tomorrow…

no chance i hate the bloke, he spends too much time on his hobbys and likes Phil Collins.Dropped, hes on the bench.Im not sure who he is anyway. What ae you talking about?

    on defensive struggles at home…

But troubles at home are never funny. I blame the Father he comes home late often drunk, sees other women and demands his dinner then just reads the paper.Sort of sterile really. Mother went off to Greece and never came back after she found them dirty magazines in his briefcase.
Now theres real struggles at home. We even have a washing up rota to stop the arguing. And our Johnnies become a New Romantic and out Dads not happy about that! Oh what I could tell you about struggles at home.

on what the key will be to turning the tie around…

A big bundle at 9.15pm, loads of fouling and generally the skills of Souness and the Glaswegian martial arts of Fu Ku Tu. And a plane flying over before the game saying Emery ha ha! you are awful and aftv in! That always gives the team a big boost. Well I got the key from the Grandad in the Viaduct by Roy Brown, its a small brass key, then I try to move the tie with the key, and after about half an hour its sort of turned round and back to where it was. Good book that the Viaduct. Ol’ Ebenezer and the Stormrider. Deptford an that. Marlowe popped his cloggs down there didnt he? I wonder if he wrote them plays by Shakespeare?I mean I could play Stairway to Heaven at 15 Jimmy Page didnt write it until he was 27 and that says something.

on coaching errors out of players…

I blame Wenger, I mean he made them all think for themselves in the old days,I mean what kind of berk has that as an idea? If the players listened to me and Mr DT and Robbies gang and Talk Sport and especially Le Grove and all the pudits then we would be tops and not the city of ManUre. Its a disgrace I tell you! A disgrace! Grrrr! Grrr! Grrr!

on the lack of rotation at left-back and if that’s been to help Granit to adapt to the position…

Granits a natural born defender not a midfielder, so thats where he belongs. The team plays really well when hes at the back. Mind you Id rather have aftv at the back, Granits not as good as them, and look at his behaviour when he told everyone to bugger awf.Not very drawing room! Best plan is have everything in rotation, it keeps everyone on there toes, and thats a good thing.Cetainly keeps me on mine. Sometimes I feel like Im in that Black Swan film! Phew!

on whether it’s acceptable for a club like Arsenal to have been out of the Champions League for five years…

I dunno do I? I think the champions league is overated its not really gritty and hard more soft and caviar. Artists and theatre types is the champions league. I mean I really like it in the Europa league, its sort of interesting, a bit like the vibe at Altamont or at my Nans. Niffs a bit round there but its ok. Her Budgie a bit of a pain though. It thinks its an astrologer.

on whether the result of the game will determine whether we’ve had a good season or
    not…

not really, our priority was to get relegated, so I think Ive not done as well as I should have. If we would have gone down everyone would have thought we were pants, but thats the trick really, to lure them imto a false sense of security we would rise up like a Phoenix and show them a thing or two! Eye of the tiger and all that. I love that song. When its on I get some socks on me fists and pretend theyre boxing gloves and challenge anyone to a fight.Makes me feel like Ernie Hemmingway!

on fans planning to come to the ground again to protest…

Great idea, I love protests, sort of reminds me of May 68, you know, nobody really knows what its about but theres nothing like a shout and a scrap and getting off home for your tea and watching an Jean Luc Goddard movie. Simply marvellous. ¡No Pasarán! and ¡Viva la revo! and all that. Nothing like wearing a Marx T shirt and a beret! Freedom for the workers!

on how often he speaks with the Kroenke family…

oh all the time, Xmas, birthday and Easter. Usually theres a fancy dress party, Gunnersaurus is usually there, Adam Ant, Viv Westwood, and a load of aftv-ers, and anyone that will come to the opening of even a crisp packet, Margot Robbie was there this year. We have great games, blind mans buff, jigsaw puzzles, a bit of a panto. Then a big food fight, and some wrestling and off to bed at 9.30pm. We dont talk about football. Mostly hobbys and stuff. Its big laughs.

on whether he has spoken to anyone involved in the rumoured takeover bid…

yes of course, Everyones involved! Tweets here and tweets there.its so exciting, sometimes we talk on the phone, maybe you are hacking in and listening?.

on whether this game will dictate our summer plans…

nah nuts to that. Im off to Dymchurch to my caravan down there. Tinned raviloi, and a walk down the beach especailly where the drainage pipe goes out into the sea, sometimes you see weird bits of brown floating around, my mate said its onyx, but Im not so sure. My favourite game is fill up a plastic bottle with stones, to the point it floats alright on the water then lob other bigger stones at it to sink it.

on criticism over last week’s false nine…

well it worked! We fooled them into thinking he was number 9, but really he was no 7. If we hadnt maybe we might not have got the penalty, the false 9 moves to the centre like a real no 9 then runs off back to the goal as quick as possible to then become a false no 2 and the opposition just follow him, you know like the pied piper. I told him to think of himself as a cardboard cut out at a three day conference, standing there ushering and pointing folk in. False is the key to life is my motto.

on the balance of the tie…

Yes, doing a Windsor knot is tough as the knot can look big and bulgy, and a bit 70s. I like a slim jim 60s look best, it looks the most balanced.Bow ties are a bit weird arent they, mind you I like the ones that spin around at partyies, and those chattering teeth.Do they still have them at parties these days? I used to love parties, people standing aroudn leaning up agaimst the wall, music too load, the smoke, the bloke who was insecure and thought you looked like you needed a booting because you scared him. Some girl coming over and screaming at you ” why cant I have an opinion” and best of all some tool saying ” I fked your girlfriend”. Oh how I miss the rigours of youth.

    Thank you

    No thank you too.

You may not have the listeners but most Arsenal fans I know have been saying what you say on this very podcast for over a decade.

Twitter and YouTube and the internet do not reflect what people think otherwise Arsene would have left the club in 2012.
Not when the club pushed him out after undercutting him behind the scenes for the preceding two seasons – Arsene leaving had, wait for it, it had duck all to do with the fans and everything to do with the owners. if those “empowered” fans protesting tonight don’t understand then Raul & Kia can explain it all to them, slowly but surely. Inexorably.

After a promising moment or two early on Pepe looks to have lost his head though some would say he was never there. Let’s hope he can recover his focus if Martinelli won’t come on anytime soon as without a midfield only flash from the forwards can save arsenal as Auba already nearly did.

But, Arteta will cite bad luck, injuries, rebuilds etc , the club, having made mistakes of their own will fall for it, but convinced he will remain, and I don’t trust them to pick another either.
I don’t know how he gets over this one though , abject surrender is not a good look, even if fate had been kinder by millimetres
Very very poor , nothing to redeem this season, the best policy would be to follow advice from 80s band Orange Juice and rip it up and start again.
