Leeds, Leeds, Leeds!

Good morning all.

This afternoon at 4.30 P.M. we play Marcelo Bielsa’s mad attacking Leeds side. It should be an exciting game because of how they play. They have an all action, all attack, energy filled game that they play no matter who the opposition is. I don’t believe they have a single player that is as good as his Arsenal counterpart. Regardless of that, they will come at us in waves for 90 plus minutes. They will impose their game on us. It might cost them dearly, but even if it does, they will do the same again to their next oponents, no matter who they are. Remember those days?

Now, as for us? Who knows? We hope it’s the way we played for 44 minutes against Villa and not what we have seen for most of the rest of the season, but as I said, who knows?

Two big misses for us are Partey and Tierney. Their absence gives Arteta a problem or two that is more than just their own quality being missing. Who he picks to replace them will change the way we play considerably. The conservative changes would see Cedric and Elneny come in. Cedric is a genuine defender and Elneny is full of running, which me might need to match Leeds. A more adventurous line up would see Saka at leftback and Ceballos in the middle. Again, who knows? I can see the benefits for them all.

Luiz and Leno are back and one of them, Leno, seems certain to be selected. Luiz though? That’s quite a call for Mikel. Personally I’m not sure he should pay the price for what I consider was shocking refereeing, but I suspect he will.

We absolutely have better players than them, but so do every other team in the league, so we can’t rely on that, we will have to play well to win. We can and I hope we do because that will make it a good game and a good day.

Best of luck to Mikel, the boys and you all.

Stay safe

Pedantic George.

  1. It is done to say if Partey is a big miss because we have still not really seen him. When he goes of injured he hurts the side. Our most successful CM pairing is still Granite and Mo.
Keiran is a big miss especially as Mandy said on the last post we got rid of Sead and Ainsley from that position.
This is a very even game and their style should suit us so we should be able to score goals although they seem to score loads as well.
Auba may start and Pepe may revert to the right with Saka going in at left back and although those first two don’t fill me with much confidence I do think we will get plenty of chances today COYG.

  2. Looking forward to this one, though with some trepidation. You never know what Arsenal you are going to get. And even if we do well, could do with Auba coming out of his slump , for good! ( if only it were that easy)
The refereeing is always a worry for this team. And Mike Riley was born in Leeds, though we all know he is a true Utd man at heart, he has shown that enough

This squad would’ve been better off:

    Martinez > Leno
    Nelson > Willian
    keeping Monreal then signing Cedric
signing Evans over Luiz as a back up CB

But as with Big Sam and Morrison the story here is who are the agents of the above players. Exactly the same as it was last time an Arsenal squad degenerated from playing top level footy to John Jenson hoofball: Agents, the topic which everyone in the sport talks about by which is the true omertà in Football media and blagging, which is a revealing & amusing contradiction eh. Everyone talks about th agents save the people paid to talk about the sport.

On top of which we are not even allowed to critique this awful poor management by the K’s. Incredible scenes when you think about it given the decade long harassment of AW.

  4. Ignoring the Kronke’s ongoing sabotage and buffoonery.

Today both teams have a similar league position and overall goal difference but the goals for and goals against columns could not be more different. Which tells us quite a lot about the Footy. And of late the Gunners have reverted to their season norm of chances created and given the poor management of players’ fitness the first eleven will not be as strong as we want so. With arteta again opting to ask a front three of Pepe Auba and Willian score him a goal at the end of the last match given their record this season as a combination, given Arteta’s use of this misfiring combination, we might struggle to see goals over the next period.
Fingers crossed someone that someone has informed Arteta to NEVER again play that front three in that order ever again, but it is unlikely…

  5. …as what appears to determine whether you get to wear the shirt at the Gunners of late is:

The identity or relevance of their agent.
Please refer to Jenson playing ahead of Davis.

Don’t believe me? See the smears against Nile’s agent put out by the club. It is what is yet we are not even allowed to discuss this topic, the very same topic which led to an England manager getting sacked in the recent past. You couldn’t write such a bizarre narrative with so many contractions whilst holding a straight face.

  7. Contradictions > contractions!

I understand those who say there’s nothing you can do about it but, but the mismanagement on all fronts is getting worse and without any scouts there won’t even be another generation of Saka’s, Nelsons, Iwobi’s (he’s better then Willian!), Niles etc.

in the interests of the club and as people who like to watch football I think we are entitled to some concern here about the Football (if people expect football fans to stay quiet as the club swaps Iwobi or Nelson for Willian forget about Ozil then I have an innocent newsflash for them).

    COYG.

  8. Niles or another baggies midfielder losing their opponent for a half chance converted into a Utd equaliser. The loan was criticised but he’s playing against Utd in the PL in midfield, looks like a good move for all concerned so far.

My moan above should have been shortened to explain that I’d prefer to see academy or younger players given minutes over Willian.

After a few days off I don’t think Willian would start unless Saka starts at LB. Although not ideal it is in my opinion probably the best call today to have Saka at LB. There are a few options ahead of starting Willian even if Saka starts at LB. Saka and Martinelli was a good combination last year. Seems like the best option? COYG.

  9. MO starts ahead of Pepe & Martinelli, but will it be on the left or right side?
Auba. for Laca. Cedric stays but changes at RCB with Luiz starting and Ceballos in too. Lots of changes but with the games coming up some rotation as opposed to none (Tierney!) is necessary.

Still annoyed at the first Saka penalty being overturned, the defender made no effort to play the ball and bundled Saka over, a clear penalty as you will see any day, but its AFC so the pgmol can do as they please

  18. Incredible! Player runs into opponent. Simple foul. No penalty because Saka wasn’t willing to take full body slam?. The pgmo are class unto themselves.
Leeds were so embarrassed the keeper follows up with a needless kick on Saka to show the officials how it is done.

Saka now dominating this half of football and it’s strong run across the box that sets up Bellerin’s goal. Both CMs also playing well. Cedric struggling going forward on his wrong foot but only once was Rafinha found in space behind him.

    Saka. Wow.

that was said by DL just before the ref overturned his decision to give the penalty

  20. in the build up to the third goal Saka actually should have had his 3rd penalty of the game as a leeds defender clearly pulled his shirt, but the lads knows if being body checked with no effort to play the ball is not going to be given as a penalty then a little thing like having your shirt pulled is certainly not going to be given, so he carried on and we eventually got the goal we deserved

  27. Auba is not the perfect all round player but he is my favourite and arguably the most important at the club since Henry.

Another strong run by Saka, the ball breaks and Saka and Cedric combine to press and ESR breaks into the box to set up the hat trick, might have been a short/cross to Auba.

No clean sheet after Leeds score from a corner.
The healthy goal difference for the Gunners since Boxing Day, the dip coinciding with Auba’s absence, should mean that the Gunners shouldn’t give up on catching Tottenham just yet! Hope of catching recent rivals Chelsea has gone so Spurs will have to do.

On Tierney and Partey, Arteta says it’s unlikely either will feature against Benfica, but he adds that if one does make it, it will be Tierney – who is due to start training in the next few days.

  38. I know the media always like to give MOTM to goalscorers but Ed, right Saka tore them a new arsehole and should have taken the award no question.
Granite was his usual assured self and Hector was also a big influence as was ESR.
Right let’s get on to Auba, while it’s great to see him score his first PL hat-trick after all the personal shit he has to deal with and I was chuffed for him, he certainly isn’t the most important player since Henry. If we had never had at the club we would of found goals throughout the team instead of it coming from one source and if he doesn’t score he really gives the team nothing.
His first goal was fantastic today and there are many teams that would kill for such a reliable penalty taker and the movement for the third was again fantastic but had he not been there would we not of scored lots of goals against a side that are very open a suit us down to the ground.
Auba seems like a really nice bloke so he deserves some joy but if you actually critique his all round game there are loads of holes.
This was a very enjoyable game but another one where you need to read the poem If to keep our feet on the floor.
However until we play again I shouldn’t be a black cloud but revel in the win happy ST winners day everyone.

Moments in the game when its possible to see what the team might become. I’m biased but ESR showed his immense value today. Nice moments from Odegaard.
This side under this ownership and with this manager will win nothing with these refs: with a level playing field we would be getting close.
    Saka is ridiculously good.

  41. foreverheady i had to laugh at the commentators going from its a certain penalty, to changing immediately to its not a penalty once VAR got involved, they totally changed from the defender got no where near the ball, to its just a coming together, as I said last season, VAR will not help Arsenal one iota, it is only used to confirm what many of us already knew, the PGMOL game mangers will fuck us over right in front of our eyes and use the notion that VAR has checked it and so it has to be the right decision. They are laughing at us, right into our faces.
Saka has been kicked from pillar to post all season long, he has been refused at least 4 penalties that would have been given to him without question if he played for any of city, utd, liverpool, chelsea, LCFC or spurs. I really do fear that the lad will realize that he will get it much easier if he was to leave us for one of the favored sides

I genuinely think most of the teams above us are better than us and although some are going through bad patches were not a side who are showing any type of consistentcy.
I know there will be games where we look like world-beaters but the next game we are just as likely to struggle and yes officials are one reason but our set up is the main reason.
I think we are a good bet for ninth or tenth but that’s about it.

Loads to talk about from yesterday. I’m guessing not coincidence Ceballos had one of his best moments with us in game where we had the three mobile skilful players who like connecting with others in front of him. That’s much more like the sort of teammates he had with Spain u21 side.

  47. Mighty relieved for my own state of mind we won despite the pen overturn and that the next goal came so quickly it didn’t give me long in the state it plunged me into.

Still feel it illustrated the fact that to win we generally have to do it in spite of crazy bias or whatever the fuck it is against us, and, well, there’s sure to be many days that isn’t possible.

I’m really surprised they didn’t give a pen to Bamford (not one for me, but that doesn’t normally stop them, especially when there’d be extra pain involved- a red, or a big comeback)

Just maybe it felt like too much on a day they’d overturned a pen in those circumstances . Wouldn’t stop many of them but never felt Marriner was in top tier of despising us.

  48. Reached point where I not only believe they obviously wouldn’t have overturned pen in same situation if was opponent, but I think a very good chance they’d have found one for the Ayling block as well. Hands weren’t by sides, made himself bigger. Don’t think it kicked up off body onto hands. Even possible they could make a red of that.

Supposing that’s even close to truth, and applies in pretty much every game, think it points to just how monumental our disadvantage is

West Ham go up to 4th, they are 8pts ahead of AFC

sheffield utd are in deep relegation trouble, they are currently 14pts from safety with 14 games to play, they are in reality a full 5 wins extra needed over the likes of Newcastle, Brighton, Burnley, and when you consider that they have just the 3 wins from their 24 games, its hard to see any way they will avoid the drop, WBA who have 13pts are really in the same sort of massive trouble too, they have just 2 wins so far this season.

  50. Stillarich why do you think Gabriel and Partey are part of our strongest eleven. Gabriel had a good period but overall he has shown to be more mistake ridden than the much abused Mustafi. As for Partey how can anyone tell if he is any good as he is always injured.
Certainly Mari is better than Gabriel and Elneny will always give 100% and is rarely missing and so at the moment Granite and Mo are our best CM pairing.
Cellballos showed at about the 20 minute mark why he can’t be trusted. He brilliantly let the ball role across his body completely taking the player out of the game then he tried an unnecessary backheal and miskicked it and lost the ball in a dangerous area. He has often shown flashes of brilliance but overall he is unreliable.
I’m still not sure about Auba either, I think he’s on the decline and think we should be using Eddie as often as possible to replace him.
