Aubameyang x 2, and Saka with our goals.

No more than we deserved, by far the better team. We move up to the top half of the table, but have played 4 games more than Aston Villa who sit a point behind us.

Half way through the season and our record reads as we sit in 10th

  4. Top moments again from the youngsters. Easy enough for the midfield but Xhaka and Partey looked as if they were starting to enjoy playing together. Only a fleeting impression but Willian looked to be enjoying himself more when he came on: it would make a big difference to the second half of the season if he was back to somewhere near his best.

  5. I’ve hated not seeing two of my favourite players of recent years sidelined, so with the news today that both Wilshere and Ozil are set to resume their on-field careers I’m happier than I’ve been for a while on the football front. I was not surprised by the names on Eduardo’s list of footballing heroes. Silky skills and injections of pace that change games is what gets me off my seat.

  8. Nice. With majority of our games being tough and tight for some time now actually felt bizarrely comfortable once had lead tonight (not that I wasn’t still worried about it going wrong at 2-0!)

Space, time, definitely felt like could have been more goals there for us.

Partey looks a top drawer player. Like a number of Atletico midfielders of recent years, although they are often deployed in ultra defensive set-ups, especially in biggest games, technical level is very good. Excited to see if him and Xhaka make a good partnership.

As for Saka and Smith Rowe linking up nicely again for a goal…really not much I enjoy more.

  9. Well if they do start to hit those dizzy heights Eduardo let’s hope they spend a few seasons with The Arsenal. On the theme of young players, I know that Martinelli is only just back from injury, but he definitely needs a goal to calm him down and get him back on track: his frustration is palpable.

  10. Hear we have tougher run of games coming up. Feels pretty decisive. Is this recent run a false dawn or can we look forward with real hope to 2nd half of season?

We go into it with confidence surely much better than was through those weeks/months of struggling. Fingers crossed.

  11. forever heady.

Yeah (on Martinelli). Also hoping he learned lesson from that one with keeper. At moment he is reminding me of youth player of a few years ago, Kaylen Hinds, who was absurdly brave and would go in honestly for every ball he could reach, even ones when a defender thundering across looking sure to fly in. Went off injured as result of heavy collisions 3-4 times in about 15 games I saw him.

  12. I think every team now has a tougher set of games coming up: most will be now starting the second half of the league season, some will have draining (given the tight schedule) games in hand. Some who have maybe performed better than initially expected may struggle should their preferred starting eleven get tired or injured, those with greater squad depth will need that depth to cope with domestic cup and European runs.

And all against a backdrop of lockdown blues and lack of crowd adulation. Lucky these players are to be sure to be playing their matches, working hard in training and drawing their huge salaries: but they are also young men bored to death of lockdown, stifled by the lack of crowd-fuelled oxygen, missing the after match parties. Like many they will be suffering their own anxieties and depressions, especially those with family spread many miles away.

At this moment I can’t see past City for the title, but the rest of the places are, to quote a favourite line, very much up for grabs now. I will be surprised if The Arsenal don’t get quite close to third place as the team has a bit of momentum growing.

And pray God that August 2021 will see a season increasingly played in front of busy and buzzing stadiums.

Arteta “He needs to compete for his place like everybody else. There’s been a lot of players who have been left out of the squad and had less minutes. Ainsley has played some minutes in the league, a lot of minutes in the Europa, the FA Cup, semi-finals and finals for us. It’s about him, his performances and how much he wants to be in the team.”

  16. Wonder how we’ll play it rotation wise with those three games. Tierney for one there’s no way should be in line for all three. Pushing luck a lot if you tried Emile and Saka for all of them.

Tricky because as Newc cup tie showed likely to be quite a drop off if don’t go with strongest line up.

Got to think Saints away in league is the one where we should risk resting at least a few. Not ideal but seems best option.

Soon find out but Ainsley’s omission raises prospect he’s unhappy, we are tempted again to cash in, or both.

  17. Things could not have gone much better for Mikel Arteta and his side on Monday night as we beat Newcastle United.

Not only did we extend our unbeaten run, but Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang got back among the goals, Thomas Partey was in fine form on his return to the starting XI and our youngsters flourished.

Afterwards our manager faced the media, and this is what he said:

    on the performance…
Yes I am really pleased with the performance overall because collectively and individually it was really strong from the beginning. It took us longer than we wanted to score the first goal because in the first half we had some big chances as well, but overall the team looked confident, looked solid, looked compact and very clear about what we had to do, defending and attacking, so I am really pleased with the clean sheet, the goals, and overall the run and the momentum we have.

on Auba getting over the missed chances to score twice…
That is what he has done through his career and mentally you have to be really strong in order to do that, and come out of a difficult period where we miss his goals a lot and today he has come back and scored two and contributed to the team winning, which is exactly what we need. So I am really pleased for him.

    on why he came off…
He had a little [stomach] problem and had to come off.

    on the team showing patience…
It is part of understanding these types of games, and when the team is able to come out of these games with this result and confidence, it helps a lot for the next one because they know that the moment is going to come, that we cannot lose our structure, our organisation. Of course there were things, that at half time, we had to improve and do better, to be more consistent, quicker, more efficient in certain moments to attack. This is great information for us and for them it is great to believe against these structures we can outplay them, we can nullify them to do very little in our own box and we can come out and score three, four or five goals.

    on Thomas Partey’s performance…
Yes, obviously we have been missing Tommy and he has this presence, this aura, that makes him a special player for us. Hopefully we can keep him fit because we can all see the difference he makes on the side and I think he was growing and getting better and better as the game was growing and evolving.

on how much the team’s confidence has grown since beating Chelsea…
We always say that winning is the best thing for any collective team or any individual as well. But for us to get in the momentum that we are with the clean sheets – that was our fifth one in a row – we have managed to do that, the fact that we are scoring goals and everything is more fluent. The energy, the cohesion around the team and the spirit is better. So I’m glad, but we have to maintain that run and keep going. There are still a lot of things that we have to do better and improve but overall, I’m really pleased with how we’re playing at the moment.

on Mesut Ozil being in Turkey but it not looking like we missed him…
Well, Mesut is in Turkey and he’s going through the medical which has to be completed and there is some paperwork that has to be done. But it doesn’t matter, Mesut’s quality will be missed because he is a very special player that had a big history in this football club. And the deal, when it happens, I will give my clear opinion on that.

on Emile Smith Rowe and Bukayo Saka’s current form and if it’s an easy decision to play them rather than more senior players…
It’s never an easy decision [to leave senior players out] because we’re talking about big players. But at the end, I have to manage the football players who have moments in their career and in their season and to be fair, when someone is performing it doesn’t matter what his profile or his age is. I think they deserve to play. They were really good again tonight and I am really pleased with what they are bringing to the team.

on whether the players who are being left out for them understand why…
Yes. The players that don’t play are obviously never happy but what we ask them to do is to try to improve, to keep pushing everybody and when they have their opportunities to show that they’re better than the ones that are playing and that we are wrong with our decisions. To be fair, everybody is training hard, everybody is trying to contribute and the ones that are not playing, their attitude and behaviour has been so far, so good.

    on Ainsley Maitland Niles…
He needs to compete for his place like everybody else. There have been a lot of players who have been left out of the squad and they have less minutes. Ainsley has played some minutes in the league, he’s played a lot of minutes in the Europa League. He’s played in the Emirates FA Cup, he’s played semi-finals and finals for us so it’s about him, his performances and how much he wants to be in the team.

    on Aubameyang’s substitution…
It was just a little stomach issue, that’s all.

on how tough it’s been for Aubameyang during our poor run of form…
Well, I don’t know. I had various conversations with him, to try to support him, help him, give him some guidance. At the end [of the day], internally, you are the one who suffers. To open up, it’s complicated. He takes a lot of responsibility, he’s very critical with himself and he knows his role in the team and how important he is for our success. But there’s only one way, work harder, put your head down, be humble and try to keep helping the team. That’s all.

on if he wants to give Thomas Partey more freedom to express himself…
Yes. He can do that, technically he is more than capable of doing that and he’s great in both transition moments as well. It will take him some time to understand a different way of thinking or doing [things] than what he was doing with the previous team he was involved in. He has all the characteristics that we need to make us better, that’s for sure.

on if he speed of thought will help Arsenal…
His dynamism, his physicality, his creativity and the presence that nature has given him. You have that person on the pitch and you are able to dominate a game when it is needed and Thomas has this quality.

  18. I’d imagine that we will go with a rotated team in the Cup which will be stronger than Southampton’s rotated team, and then we will edge our way to a League win against them. We’ll have too much for Man U at our place – they are in a false League position just now.

  19. Hate to lose Ains. Think he’s lost out big time with us switching to back four though. If there’s no chance of him playing in mid, and doesn’t seem to be…hard to see how you keep him happy, or how he can play near his best.

Think it was an important part of Ferguson’s ways to keep some homegrown players who were never going to fully nail down starting place but were ultra committed, often versatile, seemed fairly happy to wait for chances and, truth be told, often played role of his diligent little soldiers, ready at any time to do the dirty stuff.

That’s not Ains though. He has more talent and potential than that. Can imagine him feeling very hard done by if was persuaded to stay on with a lot of assurances about importance and playing time.

I said yesterday that if I was a betting man that one option I think would be a good bet on is Ryan Christie to be the CAM we sign, and you what, of all the players linked, he is probably the least known, or the one with the smallest reputation, but he is also probably the one that would make the most sense, not as a replacement for Ozil, (cos why would we want another player who we are not willing to give game time to,), but as an understudy for ESR, or even someone to challenge ESR for a starting spot, but not someone who would automatically take the young lads starting spot just cos he is a big money signing.
ESR needs to play week in week out if he is to progress, he is 20, has had 2 loan spells way, and is nearing 50 career games, the next step is game after game after game for AFC, he needs to be trusted as much as Saka has been. Bring in a first choice player ahead of him and can anyone really see him fulfill his potential here.

Hopefully, we will now see Jack and Ozil back on a pitch, look forward to that, both great talents. I have no idea what has, or has not gone on with Mesut, dont even really want to dwell on it because it baffles me, all I do know he was a very special player, a true privilege to see someone so talented. Being lucky enough to have seen what he does from up in the stands, looking on with complete amazement…did he really do that? How?? , then seeing a close up of what he did was even more impressive. I don’t know enough to compare such players technically, all I can say that in terms of enjoyment of watching him, Mesut sits up with some pretty impressive players for me at least, talking Dennis and Cazorla level.
It’s a shame the powers that be decided to reward Jamie Vardy every time someone breathed on him, denying Ozil a title here his talent deserved.

  33. I hope Arteta is not going to be mealy-mouthed about Ozil.

It would be best for him to keep his mouth shut.

He must accept some responsibility for the loss caused by Ozil’s treatment, but, of course, he won’t.

A good result, but against a really poor opponent.

Apart from the boost in confidence a good win might bring, let us not get too carried away.

That boost can be destroyed with a single nad result.

It is not as though we were scintillating throughout.

I could only watch the last 30 minutes and we were fine, but nothing spectacular.

Have not most people said that the first half was dire?

Let us keep our feet firmly placed on the ground.

  34. This Arsenal contribution is an adaptation of one that I submitted to the Untold Arsenal site last year. I make no apologies for repeating it here, in case readers have already come across it previously.

I have been watching and following Arsenal for over 65 years! I have been following the team through thick and thin throughout this time under the guise of the following managers including the likes of Swindin; Wright; Mee; Neil; Howe; Graham; Rioch; Wenger; Emery; and currently Arteta ( plus one or two interim managers throughout this time).
Of these managers I would suggest that only Mr Graham and Mr Wenger ( and to a lesser extent Mr Mee) have really inspired me with my prolonged optimism as to the further success of the club.

Prior to Mr Mee becoming manager, I followed Arsenal continuously home and away, despite not having much money for train/coach/bus fares, although entrance fees to football grounds were then cheap enough for standing room (thanks to my family financial support). My optimism for Arsenal success during this time never wavered. The success of the Thirties and late forties/early fifties would return…

Bertie Mee appeared to be the change agent that would reignite Arsenal success. For five years under his stewardship, Arsenal became ‘great’ again, in a similar way to Tottenham Hotspur becoming great under the stewardship of Bill Nicholson in the late fifties and early sixties or like Liverpool under the stewardship of Bill Shankly in the sixties and seventies.

However, five years of success under Mr Mee came to an abrupt end although thankfully without relegation. From then on I continued to attend home matches but very few away matches because work, life, love became greater priorities for me. I still followed Arsenal and still hungered for continued success of this great club that had taken up so much of my early life.

My optimism never wavered as I have reported, but I have to admit that during my early support of Arsenal, pre Bertie Mee, I was somewhat vocal when watching the team. Ecstatic when Arsenal won, praising the team and individual players. Horrible to all and sundry when Arsenal lost! I remember bad-mouthing certain players together with the management alike after a loss. I knew what Arsenal had to do to win! I knew what players Arsenal needed to sell because I knew they were useless! Some of my friends agreed with me too, so I knew that my opinions had to be right, would lead to success if only they were taken on board by the Arsenal team and management. Newspapers, books, schooling, radio and tv news; a few close friends and family helped me make sense of the world within which I was experiencing in these early days of supporting Arsenal. There was no internet. Computers were virtually unheard of. Telephones, yes but mobile phones (smart), no? Wide world communication? No. Technology was somewhat of a limited design compared to now).

Both during and post Bertie Mee era, I became less critical of the team and individual players and managers alike, win or lose.
Why had I been so critical before this period when the team lost? I did not know how to manage or coach a football team at a professional level. I did not know about the ins and outs of a football club and its associated relationships both inside and outside the real world that I was experiencing. I certainly had never known or had never been introduced to the actual owners of Arsenal Football Club! I had no idea who they were and that they even existed I did not know that Arsenal was owned and controlled by the merchant banking HIll-Wood family dynasty. ( In my younger Islington days I only knew the term ‘merchant banker’ as a so-called London rhyming slang term of abuse, describing an unsavoury character).

Post Mee, different priorities elsewhere continued to influence my belief systems and I have been very fortunate to have experienced much change in my life. This has included me becoming less intransigent in the way that I have followed the failures and successes of Arsenal.

So, what have all these rantings of an old man here to do with penning an article for Positively Arsenal?

I keep repeating that my optimism for the the success of Arsenal has never wavered. Yet I am saddened by the number of Arsenal followers who have been for a number of years and still are continually berating the club and showing negativity towards many of the players and associated workers within the club. I have admitted that I bad-mouthed some players from the terraces in my younger days, in a similar way to those that barracked Granit Xhaka last season in the Crystal Palace match.

Information Communication and Technology now allows for the immediate transfer of viewpoints and beliefs, whether truthful or fake, to a wider audience. Opinion and beliefs that are not supported by evidence can be very dangerous and very hurtful.

I cite the current reaction to Nicolas Pepe for instance. He is a young man, a young player experiencing a totally new culture. How would some young men react in the way that he reacted to something that had happened on the football pitch? How many people know what he was or had been undergoing when on the pitch in the Leeds match? The process of his receiving the red card via VARS can be questioned; did the referee make the decision by review or was the decision already made by the VARS operator? I am not trying to diminish the extent of his actions but is there any mitigating circumstances in evidence? When so-called fans now continually berate him what is their evidence for this? Perhaps the type of coaching that he is receiving has led him to become somewhat deskilled from the talent that was obvious when he was at Lille. Perhaps such attitudes towards him on social media sites have had a bad effect on his mindset which is now affecting his playing!

Granit Xhaka has made it clear how he felt during and after the Crystal Palace match. Yet another player who was berated along with his family. What evidence was used to justify the berating of Xhaka and his family?
Atrocious behaviour by so-called supporters? Obviously, “no” according to some who felt the need to act in such a way and still criticise him today in a similar way.

The sacking of Mr Wenger is another example of how supporters can influence and be influenced by the use and behaviour of the communication media. And so it goes on and on…There is evidence in abundance of corruption within football worldwide. Be it in the UK through the make up and behaviour of the Football Association and its officials; the Premier League and its officials; the PGMOL and its officials; football club owners and their officials through to FIFA and its officials. Perhaps some Arsenal supporters could vent some anger towards such organisations rather than towards team players and other workers within the club.

As I have experienced many changes within my life, I now try to view occurrences/happenings/further changes with the help of evidence. Evidence is something that I rarely used with confidence if at all in my younger years. Can I ask some supporters to consider the need for evidence-based opinions when expressing viewpoints on all types of multi media stages. For instance, there is much evidence to suggest that continually changing managers every one or two years does not necessarily lead to short term success, nor yield any success in the long term, even if such a manager has had experience in the job before.

How many Arsenal fans know who or what is behind any decisions being made internally within the club? Yet there are so many fake comments and opinions expressed on social media without the use of any evidence at all other than “because it is my right to free speech!” or “because I heard it down the pub” or “because I saw it with my own eyes” …..etc

Arsenal the club is struggling at present on the playing field. I remember Arsenal struggling under George Swindin; Billy Wright; Terry Neil; Bertie Mee (despite winning the double); Don Howe and feeling exactly like I do now. It wasn’t until Mr Graham arrived that things began to change for the better. However, this began to change after some success and unfortunate corruption, so Mr Graham was replaced by Mr Rioch, who himself was quickly replaced by Mr Wenger.
The rest is history……Let us hope that the above history is not repeated, otherwise an old man here will never experience the thrill of another great team performance!

  35. The first half wasn’t dire in fact we should have scored a couple. We did need to quicken the pace a bit around their area which we did in the second half. They also gave us more space second half and both Xhaka and then Partey were able to switch play more often allowing the forward running players more time in dangerous areas.
This was an enjoyable game but Newcastle are a very poor side. It was a great feeling winning 3-0, not conceeding again and watching your youngsters destroy another team however the next day when you look at the table and how other teams are playing it’s still seems difficult for us to get top eight.

  36. ha ha ha, the latest nonsense being spewed out about Ozil is that he was that good in training and found it so easy that he would amuse himself by putting spin on his passes so other players could not control the ball, especially those that he did not get along with, and that this irritated the other senior players.

Good game for Cedric too after he’s had a few outings to warm up.
It’s a shame that Guendouzi and Ceballos got the minutes that AMN deserved over the last two years, with Partey keen on building a partnership with Xhaka (yes the Arsenal blaggers, you know who, they know less then the sweet FA about the football!)

It is just possible that in Gabriel, Mari and Holding we have three fine defenders, with Luiz a reliable back up. I think it would be fascinating to see how the statistics are monitored, what the fitness regime is for each player, how their indivdual fitness and wellbeing is monitored. How much time they spend on building the signature style of play (whatever Arteta’s style will prove to be), how much time to specific tactics in light of the upcoming game. What they eat (and the diet plan they are meant to follow), who they hang out with, what the banter is, who are the influencers, who sets the tone, who subverts it.

Most clubs are lucky if they ever have three food starting CBs we have four plus Luiz so there’s no rush with Gabby and his injury he can be mentored by Mari just like Ozil has been mentoring ESR when he can.

Likewise in the opposite or opposing D ESR’s quality confirms that the club would have been best off retaining Ozil for next season and this, heh, as a Rozza style player coach until they could fluke finding another’s talent to guide and or compete with ESR that is vaguely at their level.

It’s amazing how those running the club get so little criticism from the very blaggers who attacked the best coach they will ever see for so long for what is in this ozil example in Footballistic lingo: the worst call with a player that any of us are ever going to see! And I include the signing of Willian there!
    Good lord…
…fortunate ESR knows, or knew to make the bet of this past half season at Conley. Smart lad.

  45. Ozil putting too much spin on the ball for his least favoured teamamates during training this past half season would’ve been worth the admission fee (to training!).

    What madness we’ve seen!

  46. fins I don’t think Gabriel has been injured, he was firstly suspended, then got Covid, but without symptoms, Arteta said he was only left out after that due to the training sessions he missed in that time.

  47. fins imagine we are that good that we were able to leave out a player who can manipulate a ball like that, I wonder what other bat shit crazy story they will come out with next to slag Ozil off with.

I see loads of hate for Sokratis, Guendouzi and Mustafi for their thank you messages to Ozil, stuff like they can fuck off out of the club too, cunts undermining the club, etc etc but oddly enough Aubameyang who also sent Ozil a thank you message is not lumped in with the others – when I called someone on this, they just said, all players leave in the end. Its laughable how so many act. Its like those attacking Xhaka today cos some numpthy put up a clip of him passing backways when we were 1-0 up last night, its just anything to have a go at certain players. Once again today I called someone on them describing Xhaka as lacking mobility, when he is a player who is always right up there with the amount of ground covered per game, its a lack of speed that GX has, not mobility.

  48. Granit Xhaka won possession in the midfield third on 12 occasions against Newcastle last night, a record in a Premier League match this season. [@WhoScored]

  49. Xhaka occasionally exhibits heavy slow feet. When he’s having a bad game it can look like he’s playing in lead boots. That’s it! No need to go off on his on his passing whilst making no sense about the Footy (see yer average Arse Blagging eeeeedjiot)

I suspect that the people focused on critiquing the passing (whilst never mentioning his slow feet on occasion) from a player recognised by other footballers as a very very good midfielder know: sweet FA about the Footy.

This season these clowns have gone from trying to hound him out to acknowledging that he is the ‘second’ best midfielder at the club (Partey has played like two games ahahahah it is funny when you can laugh at their moronic click baiting lies).
