Arteta-Ball Was The Winner At Old Trafford

Podcast: As Arsenal defeat Manchester United at Old Trafford for the 1st time in 14 years, for most football fans it doesn’t matter how many shots Arsenal made on United’s goal. All that matters was the win. Yours truly Shotta and Blackburn George, @Arseblagger, conclude Arteta-Ball was the winner.

  1. I had a chat with a fan of another club a few days ago and he made a good point re Arteta, he said Mikel was a very lucky manager cos he is liked by the media. That from day one of his appointment the media have been on his side, the narrative has been that every thing good that happens at Arsenal is due to Arteta, and anything bad that happens has nothing what so ever to do with Arteta, but Emery, or Wenger, or Raul or Gazidis, or Ozil, in fact anyone but Arteta. The narrative surrounding Arteta is all on his side. None of his decisions are questioned, in fact regardless of the outcome he is lauded for being big enough to make hard calls. He can spout any old shit in his pressers and he will not be asked awkward or difficult questions. He is a polished PR man and knows what waffle the journos will lap up and he serves it to them. He knows he only has to say the same few soundbites week in week out and the media will lap it up, you know the ones, non negotiables, football reasons, progress being made, etc etc.

I’ve a mate who always says – Give me a lucky manager over a good manager any day of the week. – Well Arteta for me is a lucky manager, of course he could turn out to be a good manager too, and if so then we will have really lucked out.

  3. The analogy with Mourinho has long been on my mind.

the KKK now “running” the club don’t just groom player-slaves like yer Willian’s etc. they also groom managers, if they can corner them when young enough and still not established.

People wrote novels about the off field horrors at Derby County. Made movies about this stuff. Yet apparently we are not allowed to talk about it when it’s happening to the Arsenal? If that’s what some are saying then I have a simple answer!

The hope was Edu would act as some sort of filter buffer and that this would result in signings like Gabriel & Martinelli. But if the scouts who were recommending these good signings of late have all been sacked then what he fuck is going on at this club?

  4. Have the Arsenal become the Brazilian super agents nursery as Wolves have become the Portugeezah’s nursery?

Is this the great evolution the wob idiots were barking for this past decade? To turn their club into an super agents’ stable? Shaktar Finsbury Park? Sporting Highbury?

    What a bunch of fools!

Not only do they know fuck all about the football (“Ramsey and Ozil can’t play together” is an embarrassing epitaph).
They helped give away their club whilst celebrating and then defending the act. You couldn’t make it up.

  6. A little while back I did that thing we used to poke fun at other people for. I watched the youtube compilation of a transfer target. I thought to myself, wow, not seen a player like that since Vieira, could be just what Arsenal need.
Partey’s display at Old Trafforde rather bore out that analysis I thought.

17-year-old Arsenal academy striker Khayon Edwards travelled with the u23s for the game against Blackburn Rovers tomorrow.

If he features it will be his u23 debut. He has 3 goals and 2 assists for the u18s already this season, plus the winning goal in Arsenal’s u17 PL Cup match.

some are suggesting that we are playing 5 at the back, with Xhaka as one of 3 CB’s

  33. Better 2nd half. Very mixed bag of performances but pleased to see Willock prominent again.

Still have no idea how likely he is to win place in team or even main 11-16 players but what’s surely true is that if he does reach that level, through performances against better opponents than tonight, it”ll mean we have an exciting player to watch, with a rare and highly useful set of attributes. Brings a welcome element of unpredictability (not the Pepe kind)

  34. Is it harsh by way to think way Ainsley mishits passes is somehow different to way others do?

Doesn’t look like a typical misjudgement or technique failing in normal way, more like he slips into some sort of bad habit, especially when passing under no pressure, where instead of concentrating on getting pass right he attempts to earn style points of some sort by making it look nonchalant.

Could be unfair, could be that this idea I’ve had for a long time skews perception, but I can’t shake impression it’s different to normal mishit or poorly weighted pass. Three corkers of the genre tonight.

  35. Joe is definitely playing better and more positively than both Pepe and Willian so there is no reason he can’t get in the matchday 16.
The form of Pepe is worrying as even in these type of games he can’t go past his man something I never seen from a winger.
Leno still worries me as well I just hope he will get better.
Real shame for Eddie last night especially as it wasn’t him who was offside for either of his goals.
Excellent to see Joe, Eddie and Saka all link up for Pepe’s goal and overall a good night.

  38. I looked at the side before the game and thought it looked pretty strong and was surprised that we hadn’t rotated more. I then had a bit of a moment when I realised how different it was from the side that beat Man Utd on the weekend. Bit by bit a competitive and successful squad is growing. I’ve only been able to listen to the commentary on the Arsenal player for the last two Europa League matches but they have sounded very positive about Willock. I’ve just looked him up and see he has been with Arsenal since he was four! Could he be the homest grown player ever to play for the club? I certainly wouldn’t be expecting him to break into the Premier League team just yet, but there is obviously a bit about him and along with Saka seems the brightest of our younger academy players. I’d be interested to hear from those who have seen him play.

  42. I think Willock has a better more consistent technique then say Alli, heh, and will go on to be a better footballer injuries permitting. Not sure we’ve seen what we saw from an eighteen year old Ramsey from him, yet, it’s hard to speculate how he’ll develop but it is safe to say he needs a run of starts to kick on. I see glimpses of a bigger talent there.

Niles is a classic example of a player needing a few games close in succession to get their technique right, get their rhythm etc? That’s my impression.

  43. fins with his lack of game time I can see AMN looking to leave in January,

willock is 21, he will soon need to be getting a lot of game time if he is to develop, not sure he will get enough game time this season here, might need to go on a half season loan. same applies for Nelson too.
