Pep Guardiola is on a mission, He has started using press conferences and after match interviews to call for protection for this hugely expensive assembly of very talented and skillful players. He is demanding that referees give them protection from the deliberate assaults on them.
We now see many of the great and good journalists agreeing with him because it’s “only a matter of time” before one of the delicate little flowers get their legs broken. And do you know what? Pep is right and so are they. We have seen disgusting attempts to injure them in recent weeks.
These assaults are justified, by some, because less skillful players have to find a way of stopping them, otherwise they get battered. Even “good teams” like Spurs do it, with England’s finest, Kane and Alli, bang at it. Both of these two should have seen straight reds last time they met.
Every team, bar Arsenal and Liverpool perhaps, are at it. They are not going out to be strong and compete ,they are going out to injure. Of course they don’t want to break legs and ruin careers, they just want to hurt them enough to stop them playing well in that particular game. However, because the intention is to hurt, there is a huge chance that this approach leaves the victim with career changing damage. Its like driving past a school at 90 mph and then claiming you didn’t mean to kill the child you ran over, It was an accident, you are not that kind of driver. Dangerous play leads to injury. Simples.
Managers are sending players out to “get in their faces”, “leave some on him” and ” slow him down with physicality” They are asking players to overstep the mark and see how much the referee will let them get away with. They can deny it all they like, claim “its a contact sport, but anyone with half a brain knows what is going on.
Pep and his friendly journalist are right, they should be protected.
But here is where I have a problem, Arsene has been saying this since 2004, when United decided they couldn’t win a game of football, and with Mike Riley’s help, they would kick us off the park. That day they literally kicked José Antonio Reyes out of the game and all the way back to Spain.
In 2008 ,Arsenal were 8 points, clear, playing much like City are now, except with a far thinner and less experience squad. We all know what happened, rotational fouling of Fagregas ,Hleb, RVP and Rosicky was the norm and Eduardo was smashed beyond repair. The injuries bit and we didn’t have anything like the required quality to come in (unlike City). The best football I have seen Arsenal play, was ended by brute force that was sanctioned by the referees.
Was there outrage in the media? Was there bollocks. We ,and specifically Arsene , were told to “man up”. We were told we had a soft center. Were not up for the fight. Were fragile. We were told we were a team of lightweights that were not up to the English game.
Pep Guardiola is 100% right, its disgusting what is happening to his team, but it has been happening to us for 14 years and continues every time we take the field. Ramsey effectively lost two years, Jack for God knows how long, and I suspect we have lost Santi because of the constant assaults on his achilles, Diaby?, and many more.
Where is the outrage from the press been for 14 years?
Pedantic George @arseblagger .
Class comments all around once again, Fins you had cracking up @ 8:20. Love that comment from Elneny, sounds like the toxic attitudes were sent away and you have to think that there’s a renewed optimism in the room, how I so hope so and that a long win streak ensues.
I am thrilled that Mesut signed dat ting! He is top quality and I hope we see him raise silverware as early as in a few weeks!

Brilliant article!! On Ozil, the media are looking absolutely stupid right now. After weeks of declaring him a Utd player, they are now saying no one wanted him. And am absolutely loving seeing silly journalists and so called “legends” like Ian Wrong.. sorry Wright, try and back track their statements. Even Lee Dixon tried to get in the act; got absolutely abused, and much as I don’t condone abuse, this one was justified. When you disturb a wasp’s nest, you then don’t complain when they turn round and sting you. The ASB are all in melt down trying to recant their earlier statements, others now desperately trying to come up with new theories to justify their earlier statements.
I have every confidence that with a few tweaks we should be up and running again and if we can sustain a prolonged winning streak between now and season’s end, top four and a European cup final is a strong possibility.

Is it wrong that I want the grid girls to stay? (Smiley)
Not that I watch F1 anymore. It’s boring. Bring back refueling and V8s and yes, grid girls. Racing is boring and mundane without these things. Ok maybe not the grid girls. I hardly saw them anyway. I just don’t agree with the world making everything a ‘crime’. So men (and women too I might add) like to look at attractive women? Why does this have to be treated as something that is wrong or disrespectful? I know you weren’t necessarily arguing for this, but maybe you can make me understand a different view. Because I don’t get it, nor see this as a move that promotes respect for women, and I fear that in the real world, this sort of step only leads to an ugly backlash, at least in the undercurrent of thought if not immediate practice. (Conspiracy theory : This is intended)

Fully agree with your views on Collymore though(that’s who you mean I presume) And the general state of the British football media. Even the Italian media is a lot better when it comes to discussing football, let alone the German. Which is why in Italy they saw through Mourinho very quickly, despite his success. In England though, despite his lack of success (relative to spend) and his boorish behaviour, he’s still treated very well. Some like Castles actually only exist to fawn over him.
Actually, as an outsider, I’d suggest the failings of the England national team have something to do with the media as well. But they’re hardly distinct from the administration anyway (FA, Refs, PL, Media, Agents run the ‘show’)

Not following closely, as I turn off or mute when either are on screen, but sounds like Wright and Merson are really surpassing themselves at the moment; Henry chipping in as well.
Suddenly they think the world of Giroud. While with Ozil, the softening of opinion as they prepared for prospect of him leaving is instantly reversed.
Wright is just shameful, and seems to have Merson beat (!!!!), as far as Mesut and the contract goes.
He claimed the comments on legends were meaningless because not signed up, insinuated at same time he would not sign; then went on and on about his fears about Ozil at Utd, and how good he would be there, winding up our fans and playing on their fears in the process.
To then have nothing positive to say when Ozil signs!
‘Why? Because he’s played a couple of decent games and now he’s signed a contract?’ the former striker responded on Instagram. ‘Didn’t see many clubs beating down the door and he was free. Let’s hope he’s consistent now he’s signed.’
Little short of incredible. Does he actively dislike us now?

Shard, well put, i believe in the empowerment of women, but am way too old to be part of the snowflake generation, and actually , have no problem with Grid Girls, good luck to them, cheerleaders, hostesses or whatever, as long as they are appropriately paid and looked after and protected from anything unwanted, which I am sure in most cases they are. perhaps could do with a few grid boys but might not go down so well!
But, as you mention, not really my point, Colleymore is biased, an imbecile, and doesn’t fit the current zeitgeist, so not really sure why he gets air time, all he seems to do is slag Arsenal off, like a few others that by rights, shouldn’t really be on air. Wish we had more intelligent analysts

wenger’s comments today
On the transfer window closing
It allows you to focus again on the competition.
I was a bit disturbing, there was a lot of focus and energy but we finished well.
On signing Abameyang
He’s a typical striker, great pace, good ration with game splayed and goals scored.
A good work rate, a team player. We lost some goals, Sanchez, Giroud and Walcott – he will compensate on that front.
On selling Giroud
He was massively popular inside the dressing room and club, it was sad for all the players to go.
Olivier wanted more playing time, he has not played many Premier League games, he wants to go to the World Cup, that’s why I opened the door.
On team news for Everton
We had Jack who was sick, we will assess him today. I hope he will be capable to be in the squad. We will see how he feels.
Aubameyang was sick as well. Welbeck is not completely back from injury
On why Aubameyang choose Arsenal
He has played against Arsenal many times, he likes the way we play football He needs a new challenge and we were the ones who could offer that.
Can Aubameyang recreate his partnership with Mkhitaryan?
I hope so yes, they know each other well. We are an offensive team, hopefully they can recreate that understanding
Will they both start on Saturday?
Certainly Mkhitaryan will start, that’s a possibility yes. Aubameyang we will assess.
He started yesterday and was still not completely well.
Does Ozil have to be a leader now?
Of course, He has committed his future in a period where we are in a tricky period.
We need him to take responsibility.
On selling Giroud to Chelsea
Ideally you want him to go to clubs who do not compete with you, but on the other hand it was a bit linked to the Aubameyang deal.
He’s just had a third baby it was a bit difficult for his family to leave London. We owe Giroud a lot, it was difficult to turn it down because it was a rival club.
Did you want a defender?
Yes, our defensive numbers are not good enough – that’s where we wanted to improve.
Did you want a defender?
Yes, our defensive numbers are not good enough – that’s where we wanted to improve.
Can you play the big four together?
It’s a possibility. I will adapt.
We have to see how the idea I have works. We are flexible, we can play in a three or a four.
Can Lacazette and Aubameyang play together?
It’s always possible. Will I do it? Maybe. I don’t know, but I think it’s possible
On Alex Song training at the Colney
He looks for a club, I allowed him to come in to work on his fitness when the training ground is available.
Did you get everything done you wanted in the window
Everything? No. I wanted to do more.
I believe that we have to find an internal solutions to our defensive problems.
Overall, I am happy with how things went in the transfer market.
Have you had to reassure Lacazette
I don’t reassure people. We are in a competitive world.
We ahem also chosen a job where there is competition, you have to fight for your place.

Nice one George, succinctly put.
Although it may take five years or ten or even just two, I do think VAR will ultimately prove to be the White Knight that to some extent saves football from itself.
I think it will allow the game to retain its rugged edge as it enables a clampdown on the cynical hacks. It will enable most of the worst diving to be eliminated.
It will require players (and refs) to perform to higher standards of behaviour and play.
In short, VAR represents a very real and much needed revolution of – and for – the game.
And while the detail of its implementation and future development will no doubt remain hotly debated, we will know when it has been fully embedded in the game when it is eventually used to prevent that most insidious of tactics – that of rotational fouling.
Whether VAR takes 2 or 10 years to mature will doubtless have everything to do with the role of PGMOL and the will of the FA, the desires of the brand-sensitive Premier League.
But it will all happen, sooner or later.
Some of us would argue it’s already taken 10 years too long, so I suspect its fully evolved introduction will happen sooner rather than later, that proponents of VAR are actually pushing at an open door.
We will then look back on the pre-VAR era as football’s Dark Ages.

Rich anyone whose primary income and main buisiness partners are football agents actively dislike The Arsenal.
Not a mystery. there are tens if not hundreds(!) of millions of reasons why they have concerns about the ‘shambles’ evidenced by such a ‘shambolic’ club having fluked the signing of the two best footballers in the league and now Europe’s most coveted CF for 2/3 of a Moratta.
One reason Ozil is an Arsenal player and the main reason why the player that all the coaches describe as the best playmaker on the planet gets a bad press from the twats is that he is not signed up with any of their mates.
It is what it is – my cousin and his son could see who the best footballer on the park was during Liverpool’s recent visit – and it wasn’t the player just signed by Barcelona. Nor the ever impressive Mane who you all know I’ve always liked, neither the newly minted most expensive player in the league.
We all know who it is! Save the Football plundits? Do me a favour.

It’s the palpable inability of these backscratching arse blaggers to acknowledge the juvenile malice that is there in the media coverage that all can see which singles them out as a special breed:
Not the sort you’d want having your back in the trenches. Far from it.

I listened to two arseblag sleeps this week for my amusement (I’ve seen too many re-runs of The Day Today and Brass Eye):
In one episode we had ian Wright telling us where the one to one coaching at AFC was failing, describing in minute detail how he’d make it better, how he’d be the better coach.
Shame that he and Shaun agreed that Shaun should retire after his move to Chelsea and deprived us all of such skill?
Unless we can safely conclude that those intimate one to one sessions did not have that big an impact upon the pitch (after early retirement).
In the second the blagger himself was telling us all how he’d improve the coaching at AFC.
Incredible eh?
Where’s Phil Neville when you need him! Help!!! Don’t look ‘away’ now (someone might sneak up behind you and rake your ankles like a real warrior).

So has Wright got an involvement with football agents/ a football agency?
Had a look but couldn’t see anything. Anyway, not going to delve into his past or anything, but it seems there have been money problems, so the punditry work probably necessary. And we know what sells with us and what, presumably, the pundits have to provide if they want plenty of work.
What caught my eye was that his latest Ozil comment was just something off Instagram, and didn’t seem to be about ‘business’ in any way. Smacked of someone who was genuinely peeved with the news.
Sometimes I convince myself it’s just his way; he’s an excitable, emotional guy, with real desire for us to succeed. Doubt I’ll do that again.
Still, what a player.

As an England ‘fan’ (cough) it occurred to me a while ago that we have changed the manager upteem times, the players, the captain, the formation, the sponsors, had half a dozen FA bosses, played at home in a Euro Championship, and away in many World Cups, rebuilt Wembley, changed the turf in the stadium, anf we have still win fuck all since 1966.
The only thing we haven’t changed is the journos who sit on the edge of proceedings, generally bigging up what a HUGE football nation England is (or should be) then mostly sniping at the players and manager when anything goes wrong and demanding ‘heads must roll’.
The answer is clear – sack the press.

He managed (and coached) his stepsons for sure, and he advised one to choose the petrodollars over playing for The Arsenal. Fair enough. He was a great player who put his body on the line when he was a player, and he’s rightfully been putting himself and his family first ever since.
I haven’t listened to anything he’s had to say about the Arsenal after he was happy to enjoy Mourinho in his first less obviously rubbish incarnation (though the Marquis helpfully called it out in case anyone ever had doubt), before the falling out with Robben became a pattern he repeated with all the top players he managed (save Ozil?) in the process debunking his own credibility and repuation within the sport in a manner that Arsene never has: though if you listened to our plundits and blaggers you wouldn’t know that!
Even though Maureen pioneered the spectacle of billion dollar shite on a stick we should note that these days even the Special One is also taking an attacking midfielder like Pogba (as per his assist against the Arsenal) and shunting him back deep into central midfield where he has little experience and nous(at the moment). I blame the lily livered cheese eating surrender monkey Vengararrrrrghhh.

anicol another thing we have not changed in the English game is the way Refs “game manage”, you know the sort of thing, that even they admit would not be allowed in other leagues, or on the international stage. Odd that English football and its refs seem to think that there is actually two set of Football Rules.
till refs stop the thugs the skilled players will always be targeted

I don’t have a problem with ‘game managing’ eddy – player’s behaviour, even manager’s behaviour needs to be taken in context. The alternative is to brandish a card for every infraction which the likes of Dean think is he way to control game – idiot that he is.

I looked into the numbers with Tony at Untold nearly a decade ago:
Relative to Germany, Spain and now Belgium etc. a relatively chronic underinvestment in qualified coaches and facilities in the grass roots is the actual reason. These FAs took the Dutch model and reapplied it on a bigger scale where possible.
The huge love for the game in the U.K. and the staggering numbers of volunteers involved (especially in the SE but according to the pgMOB they don’t count!) keep churning out some serious talent but overall it’s not enough to compete with their peers in the 21st century.
With each year that another Gnabry or Sane pops up the gap widens.
The German FA looked at the football being played at AFC and Utd in the late nineties before creating the structure that churned out Ozil and the rest.
Meanwhile we got the pgMOB!
As Phil Neville, England Football Manager, would and will insist: please don’t look away! Pay attention!!
And the rest, as they say, is history.

Don’t anyone ever tell me about the pain of an Arsenal defeat, or being heart broken over this or that player leaving Arsenal, they are mere trifle compared to what really matters. And I’m only talking about a pet, not a human. I do think the ASB need to join the real world.

< I expect England to have a decent if not good WC, previously i joked that they'd win it if their limited pool of good footballers are not crocked.
Previous tournaments have seen the loss of Walcott (yes we've known he is not the best footballer but we have also observed that he puts up the: numbers(yikes!). The likes of Alli have had 270+ minutes to impress the likes of Iceland, the FAs golden child produced sweet FA, whilst Wally scored against Sweden within 45 mins in his only appearance in a tournament), Wilshere, Chamberlain and Welbeck all lost due to the IMPACT of the pgMOB's variable and inconsistent and self-confessed reinterpretation of the sport of football (even at Swansea we no longer play in mud!).
And also the unfortunate and unlucky Sturridge.
As Phil Neville plundit extraordinaire and England Football Manager (are the two positions linked, was one an audition for the other?) requests: do not look away! Because these are Footballers England can't afford to lose from their Football team. Evidentially so.
Biting off ones nose in order to spite your Arsenal. Something like that.

I agree with Arsenal Andrew.
I suspect that most Test level spin bowlers have a shrine to hawkeye in their homes, incense and all.
“Padding up” in the cricket alongside rotational fouling in the football was not in itself a “red card” offence but fook me it wasn’t half boring…

Padding up was never the real problem in cricket
England cricket the biggest moaners about the Asian contenent ‘cheating’ were caught cheating several times.
The worst in my opinion was against Brian Lara here in England claiming a catch and jumping around like it was valid. He must have missed the ball by a foot to 18 inches.
Lara a world renowned ‘Walker’ shook his head in disapointment , during the replays in the booth ‘Aggers’ called it embarssing CMJ was more forthright.
No one called Lara back he was on the wane but still dangerous, the desire to beat the WI was more important than good sportsmanship and honesty.
There is more, Chrissie Hynde sang about Brass in Pocket maybe Athers got confused or maybe John Lever really wanted to keep sweet out of his eyes, maybe the Cricket ball was itchy thats why it needed scratching.
I could go on.
But the Lara dismissal was a low point and hastened the video review debate.

I was trying to figure out what our squad for tomorrow might be, and so far the best I can do is narrow it down to 19 players, for me Chambers or Welbeck(depending on fitness) are the most likely to miss out on the squad. Who do you guys will miss out, or is there anyone different you think will be in the squad.
Cech Ospina
Mustafi, Koscielny, Chambers
Bellerin, Kolasinac, Monreal, Maitland-Niles
Eleney, Ramsey, Wilshere, Xhaka
Ozil, Iwobi, Mkhitaryan, Welbeck
Lacazette, Aubameyang

and I still miss my two that I lost either side of last Christmas. You just always expect them to be there when you come home from work and such. So tomorrow at the pub I’ll drink to you.
On the football front I think our youth teams are going to be a bit stretched as we go through the rest of the season with players going on permanent and loan deals and those players Arsene said would solve the problems internally. If you then add in injuries and international call ups like the six (more than ny other club) called up for the England U17s for the tournament in February numbers for all teams could be low especially as we tend to upskill through the age groups. I should think there will plenty of schoolboys appearing for the U18s from now on.

The lowest point in cricket for me was when the official cheated (yes! Officials can cheat too!!) and called Murali for throwing.
He didn’t just disgrace himself, or his federation, he demeaned one of the best cricket teams anyone will ever see and bought into question the manner of some of their success. Yet the greedy buggers kept him on and only when the crook tried and failed to intimidate an immovable object was he thrown out the game, to the benefit of everyone else.
There are people out there who’ll still attempt to argue that say, “Murali did throw the ball” However the race cheat in question never toured s.asia again – surely if his “game management” technique *coughs* was within the rules he’d have been asked to his job properly and go on tour, but that never happened.
Allegations of actual discrimination and worse all over English Football at the moment: Chelsea, the English FA, some story at West Ham I can’t be arsed with (did anyone expect any different from that lot?) and the rest.
It happens.
