Arsenal: We know we are

IMG_0562 (1) 2.jpg

Good Morning Fans of the Positive,

A slightly fuzzy morning up here in Norfolk as a result of mixing the grain and the grape, so excuse the sluurrrrrring and dribbling below. I’m entitled though, and I know it.

And why am I entitled ? Because after a fortnight of being told about the best team in London, indeed the best team ever to grace the green sward of a football pitch anywhere- ever, about the genius that is Mauricio Pochettino, we hammered the bastards yesterday. Left them flat on their back, gasping, dizzy, their manager whining about referees and injured players. How I laughed.

Let’s just get one thing clear. Spurs were not “bad”, Spurs did not play “rubbish”. They played well in phases, and made chances. They have good players and will certainly be up and around a CL places this season. However, we were better than them over the 94 minutes, by a country mile.

Of the game itself I congratulate the Premier League in their wise appointment of Mr Michael Dean to officiate. The rampant paranoia that the official generated in the days before kick off brought Arsenal fans in the Ems and even at home in to a frenzy of outrage, just right to ensure that he knew we were watching his every move. In consequence Mike, his friends all call him Mike, whistled and pointed with a fury rarely seen outside a busy traffic intersection in central Rome at 3 p.m. on a Friday. In the first ten minutes I thought he may wear his whistle out so vigorous was his enthusiasm for enforcing the rules of the game. He is not my favourite official but not a bad afternoon for the Wirral whistler.

Of our brave lads a team performance to match any we have put together over the past ten years, perhaps longer. There was a quality there, as there almost always is in our passing and movement. Lacca was sharp at the tip, and Sanchez and Mesut constantly cutting the Lilywhites open. The three central defenders were like a wall and missed nothing. Is the Monreal, Mustfi, Kosc defensive combination our best ? I think so. But there was also intense concentration. I did not see any player ‘strolling’ at any point in the game. We were never caught out by a quick ball. Eriksen created zero. Every man in a red shirt had his job and he applied himself. I don’t always see that.

It is an enormously difficult performance in which to pick out Arsenal players who stood out, as they all did. I will however be a devil and go for Granit Xhaka. The Swiss Kosovian was all over the pitch, put the boot in early to the cheating Dele Ali, and then 60 minutes in which he did not put a stud wrong. Having got on to the high wire Granit’s balance was perfect.

So let us enjoy the glow of victory for 24 hours and savour the discomfort of the neighbours, seemingly so near at 12.29 and still so very far away by 2.35. How many seasons is this ?

The result keeps us in the CL pack and with some intriguing domestic games in prospect, starting with Burnley.

It is really is s height and beautiful morning here in the east midlands and even brighter for having read Anicoll’s pithy and succinct account of yesterday’s events.

I’m definitely feeling rather relaxed today. I can even cope with the wife nagging me about jobs that need to be done around the house…

  5. from you report Anicol, I see you watched the game and thankfully did not have to rely on any media outlet for their highlights reel.
As watching the highlights on Match of the Day the one thing that struck me was how the narrative was pre-set, and how the commentator stuck to it, in his case to the bitter end. Pre game it was few if any Arsenal players would get in this spurs side, poch one of the greats, Arsene like his team/club in decline, then to the highlight reel, my oh my, you would be led to believe that spurs dominated, everyone of their attacks must have been shown, it seemed like the first bit of AFC play they showed was the foul0 leading up to the first goal (on that subject the commentator almost cried, he was so fixed at its award), it was the usual blind man act when deciding it was no foul, show the foul but say it was not a foul, then of course to compound their narrative they then say Mustafi offside, the evidence was a fixed framed shot after the ball had already left Ozil’s boot,(much like they did for Lacazette ruled out goal v stoke) and of course no line to show if any part of mustafi was offside then it was his arm, something that can not be offside, it was similar for Lacazette in build up to the second goal.
On the subject of goals, the narrative did not allow for the showing of the Lacazette disallowed goal, that would have been to suggest spurs got away with one and that was not the narrative.

Every piece of defending from Arsenal was described, as it usually is, in chaotic terms, it was “scrambled clear”, “last ditch”, “nick of time”, “just got there”, “opened up”, even “lucky”, while spurs defenders merely cleared it, or played it out.

No analysis of Alexis coming together with their defender in the area in the build up to his injury time shot,. The narrative also included its usual bit about Ozil’s lack of work rate, no not on this occasion, they were quick to point that out, as doing so suggests it is rare from him.
things like this being 11th BPL home game in a row that AFC have won, was brushed across, things like that don’t suit the narrative, nor does Poch’s and spurs awful away record v the other top six clubs, of course the per game narrative has now turned into a post game narrative of “Arsenal win papers over the cracks”

I see one daily fail scribbler has taken offense with Arsenal’s official twitter feed fro calling him out on his pre game nonsense of no Arsenal player would get in a combined team, the poor little snowflake it seems does not like his stupidity being put on display so openly.

The self induced outrage of Crafton at the Mail that his insulting, incendiary click-bait, egged on by the odious Winter, is hilarious. Chat shit, get banged as someone succinctly summed him and his complaints up on Twitter this morning.

  9. Andy, that report as good as the game. I’m also confused. I expected the lacklustre, inefficient, disorganised, couldn’t give a toss outfit that all those AWOBS had told me about. Obviously they were talking about spuds being sliced or mashed. Hard to keep up at times.
Not so hard was the utter joy of our performance esp in defence where often two or three of the lads harried them. More of that please.

  10. Glorious post for a what has been a glorious match. Even Arsenal twitter is a happy place as there is more than enough smugness to go around – till normal services resume anyway.

    Thank you Arsenal!

  11. Enjoyable if slightly blurry ‘the day after’ for me having had the luck to be offered a ticket for the game at the last minute – mad rush from Manchester, anxiety about the description about where to meet, compounded by at least half the world streaming to the ground — by boy was it worth it.

I hope no one remembers that I have been a little despondent in recent times, but there are certain events that make all ‘challenges’ — (for which – read problems) fade to insignificance. And yesterday was one of those event.

There has been some bitching by both Spuds fans and, unbelievably, by some Arsenal fans that Lacazette was offside leading up to the goal so let’s knick that on the head straight away.

    Pictures and video replays show that only the arm was ‘offside’ so as you know I am a stickler for the FIFA Laws of the Game – and it says on the matter ;

    — A player is in an offside position if any part of their body — except the hands and arms, which believe it or not are usually are conjoined in most professional footballers, — is in the opponents’ half of the pitch, and closer to the opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent who is the last defensive player, in front of the goalkeeper.

I loved the way we played, and for me, something that does not always show on the TV screen, and is worth mentioning, is that when we defended and recovered ball, there was no madcap dashing out willy-nilly on attack, which we are allegedly prone to do, but there was a decisive realigning of the defensive format masterminded by Kozzer.

Your Post was very good Anicoll and reflected the game pretty much as I saw it, altho there is inevitably a slight difference of view when watching on TV, compared with participating in the maelstrom of anxious-delighted-effervescent views and opinions expressed by every fan when actually watching from the stands, and especially when playing the puffed up Spuds.

    Oh, joy. lol

  12. So good of you to highlight Granit Xhaka because he heavily went under the radar yesterday especially considering the kind of remarks you get about him regarding his performance and he was immense in positioning, discipline and with Ramsey they made the partnership work perfectly once again in the middle. If you are an Arsenal fan and love the style of play we want to play then I don’t know how can you not like Granit Xhaka.

What a difference a day makes, the world and and his wife was against yesterday us before the game even the calender said November. Giving the critics the biggest finger in the world sures feels great.
I’ve just watched the highlights again and the spuds never really troubled us. when your watching the game live small situations seem highly dangerous and your nerves are going through the roof however when watching again its amazing how sterile they were.
Amazing the same critics cant accept we played well and their darlings were well beaten and some of the post match shit has been laughable and frankly pathetic.
Yesterday showed what we all knew that on our day we are very good what we need now is more consistency and we will be flying again.

  20. Brilliant performance by the players, and our man, who tactically outwitted his opposite number. The crowd sounded pretty amazing as well.
Agree on Zhaka, he was excellent, and had to be very careful on a yellow surrounded by serial divers. But Mustaphi, Ozil, Monreal, Ramsey, Bellerin, Cech when called upon, all of them can be proud after that game.
Reading a few articles and listening to a few radio things, seems the media are scrabbling around a bit today. One or two so called Arsenal forums lamenting the Spuds so called bad luck, but how different they were with Arsenals ” bad luck” at City , Stoke and Watford recently.
I really don’t get the media Tottenham thing, it has been going on for years, sometimes hyping some very poor teams and managers. I guess like a broken clock being right twice a day, one day they will get it right on Tottenham, but I sense they still have a very long wait. Decent players and manager, but others will have observed what we did to them and how it was done, what Utd did to them, then there is the likelihood they will get picked apart by predators, we know quite a lot about that.
But overall, what a fantastic day

  21. Even Arsene has had enough of the media double standards

“Last week we conceded a goal that was not marginally offside, that was a yard offside and that nobody found a word to say,” said Wenger.

“I watched the one again and I’m not sure it was offside and it was a foul, so suddenly when we concede the goals it’s absolutely normal, and when we are a yard offside maybe you have to answer that in a press conference.”

  22. Eduardo I agree with your comment on the motd commentator, it was so biased it was almost funny to an extend, like there was a spuds fan doing the commentary. Maybe it was not a clear foul but spuds Sanchez sticks his arm out to slow down gunners Sanchez, so I guess you can whistle for that, I think no defender would dare to do such a thing in the box cause a penalty could be given, certanly against a Arsenal defender it would be given.
But to be fair to the plundits of motd, this time they praised the teams effort, the tactics, the pressing and even said out loud that Wenger had outsmarted Poch, then they mentioned the struggle the spuds have against the top six and to top it of they said in spite of Poch alleged brilliance: no trophies for them….

the refereeing was ok, but I have no illusions on that department, when we are back in the top four we will get screwed again big time. Gunners with Arsene will only have a real shot at the title with video ref and even then…

  23. I hardly know where to start. Id written yesterday off: couldn’t see past a manufactured clever penalty and a blind eye turned to the sort of rotational fouling that cripples the spine of our talented and much maligned midfield. And I was on ‘watching my daughter in a Netball tournament’ duty (beaten in the final to a better side but enough to progress to the Nationals since you didn’t ask – and yes, it was miserable, cold and wet). So it wasnt until the match was over that I dared access BBC sport and quite frankly couldn’t believe it – and still can’t. And to read that Arsenal stuffed that journalist out of sight with the Mesut gif – and also our fans are busy stuffing Henry flipping Winter just brilliant too.
Power shift – my arsenal as Fins would say.
But its a funny game: not long played and a poor bit of midfield defending sees Kane in with the sort of chance he would often score if fully fit (he is a wonderful player and if he was one of ours Id be all over him) but he hits at Cech and then not long after we go and score. And after that its all over. especially when we add a second in quick time, But we were as close to losing as we often are to winning so for anyone to start claiming that we are good, or bad, or that Spurs are good or bad is a little bit guilty of overreacting. But just for once as its in our favour I will happily over react and proudly proclaim that we are the greatest team etc. etc.
But – when you look at the way we played yesterday and against City – and when you look at the way our youngsters have cruised through the Europa qualifying stages and also progressed in the League Cup, its hard not to think that actually we are on the brink of a new stage in the clubs history, and one that is very far from being in decline.

  24. reports that the mail is making a written complaint to Arsenal FC over their twitter feed, the reality is that Arsenal have to reprimand who ever it is that runs Arsenal official twitter site, I suggest the reprimand is made public and includes things like

    pay rise of 20%
    extra holidays
one of those silver cannons that the chairman hands out on special days to special people

a whole host of journos butt hurt over this thing, much like how the legends where butt hurt over Ozil’s stop whinging and support the team comments.

  25. What is so offensive about a player taking a sip of a cup of tea and smiling?

If the journo is so sensitive to criticism that he is offended by that, then he should be more careful about dishing out criticism in the first place.

Bearing in ind that MOTD had many hours to edit the 5 minute segment that they showed, I am somewhat surprised that they allowed the cras comment in about how many Arsenal players would get into the Scum team.

Perhaps it was a slip of the tongue, and what he meant to ask was how many of the scum players would get into our team, or how many of the scum players on show should be in the scum team.

Was not what he said somewhat insulting?

Are MOTD commentators allowed to insult anyone, let alone one of the tip teams in the country?

I think there should be a enquiry at the BBC about bias.

Silly me, they are very good at enquiries, like the one about the bias against Israel, which then refused to publish, no doubt because it showed that there was such a bias.

  26. Always thought some of our sports journalists a bit on the pathetic side, events this weekend have proved that.
Arsenals tweet was very light hearted, but a little poignant. If Twitter people are getting abusive, not the clubs fault, they said nothing to encourage any such level of abuse
Think some of these journalists need to come to terms with the fact their darlings lost.
Not as if the daily mail never tried genuinely to stir up the masses either, in stark contrast to a harmless humourous tweet

  27. Breaking: Professional shit stirrer can only dish it out, then plays the victim when it comes back to bite him on the ass.

But whether he expressed a serious opinion (unlikely), or intentionally wrote an incendiary article to draw clicks (very likely), the issue I take with this is that the Arsenal account is somehow responsible for what the people who follow it on twitter send his way.

Anyway, top top performance from the lads, though I must admit I wouldn’t rank it as our best display in the last few years: 3-0 vs. Chelsea last year, and vs United the season before that were much more technically accomplished, dominant performance. To my eye, at least.

Anyway, not to go over well-trodden ground and single out any player, because they were amazing to a man, I would just like to mention how utterly impressive our pressing was throughout the game. I had a feeling the high press would be making a return after city, when Arsenal managed to force them in a series of errors/long-balls with just a weeks practice. I suspect we will be seeing it a lot more in the games to come, especially at home. COYG

  29. It’s hard to ignore the feeling that a fit Kane would’ve got more purchase with that early half chance and tested Cech instead of hitting the ball straight at him, almost a pass.

I’ve always found criticisim of managers for playing unfit star players to be surreal. They all do it, even when they have other options, there must be a number of reasons.
Sanchez was always going to play earlier this season when not fully fit after his delayed start, yesterday he was playing after a rest whilst others on the pitch had been on internationals and I enjoyed seeing him start and play a match with his battery pack fully charged.

Conversely Brady made an interesting critique of the highly praised opposing manager, a critique that none of the bleating donkeys from this morning, the spawn of Partdrige, will be making you can confidently bet your bottom dollar on that:

By opting for Sissoko MP opted for “Pace & Power” in CM and that proved to be the wrong call in the opinion of Lord Brady, always a source of knowledge and information that I am happy to consider even if I don’t agree. There’s a logic there, which is reflected in the stats, it’s hard to out “pace & power” Ramsey (unless you’re allowed to kick him), and with Xhaka playing really well and covering the pitch in spite of this apparently chronic lack of speed (he doesn’t have great acceleration, but as Arteta and many others have proven it’s not needed there), His only error being the needless hack on Alli for his yellow when he had a colleague covering though of course we appreciate and emphasise with the temptation.

Sky sports spent half an hour after the match critising Mesut Ozil for his “off the ball game”. Not a joke! That was how they covered the performance and result. Seriously seriously weird, but true! Salvadore Dali was a novice scribbler compared with these masters of the surreal.

The innocent viewer can only assume that these honest plundits were not wamtching the movement before the second goal yesterday.

All it took was a drop of the shoulder and a shuffle from Ozil and the England Captain found himself so far out of position that Alexis could take out his pipe and slippers and write his Xmas shopping list, an act which greatly confused the keeper, inbetween controlling the fierce cross from Lacazette and smashing the ball into the roof of the net. Poor old Dier was so confused that it was his colleague to his left who had to move to try and stop Lacazette, who was on his right.
I’m guessing that these avid football lovers/plundits also weren’t paying attention when Germany won the Football World Cup with a front three of Ozil, an out of form Muller and a selection of rotating cardboard mannequins?
Or perhaps this buffoonery has a simpler explanation? Is there any further evidence out there today that these hack dwarves just don’t like The Arsenal (and everything it represents)?

It’s amazing we are not mentioning Deano today, the FK given to Alexis may have been generous, but from the refs angle, hands were all over Alexis’s sleeve. No one says a word when Ali dives in similar positions, and Alexis seldom dives.
For my tuppence, neither goal started from offside positions, but I would say that.

And allegations of Fat DT getting decked by Spurs fans after the game are only the 3rd best thing of the weekend, for those that are on it, watch Twitter and follow Mig Delaney’s latest mental breakdown today. Glorious stuff.

You’re not the first one to take a swing at the Sky post match coverage. As it happens, I ran into a few tweets expressing the same sentiment prior to actually watching, and to be quite honest, I did not perceive it the same way.

They did go on about Ozil apparently not putting the effort in for a while, but they did praise him to high heavens, probably in equal measure.

What I’d appreciate is just someone showing them the actual distance covered/number of sprints stats for the entire premier league and ask them how they square their views with that.

  37. Shkodran Mustafi mounts defence of Arsenal’s character in bitter attack on media

    Jeremy Wilson, Deputy Football Correspondent

    19 November 2017 • 10:30pm

Shkodran Mustafi launched an outspoken and angry siege-like defence of Arsenal’s character on Saturday, accusing critics of acting like the club was “dead”.

The Germany centre-back delivered a brilliant man-of-the-match performance in scoring in Arsenal’s 2-0 win but was clearly unimpressed to then be asked how close he came to leaving during the summer.

“You like to get the s***, the biggest s***,” he said to journalists. “What happens in the changing room is the real thing. I have been talking to clubs or if I haven’t, it’s only rumours. I’m here, I’m standing in front of you in an Arsenal shirt.”

Mustafi was clearly also well aware of how the current squad was questioned before this game about local pride and how much the North London derby meant to them.

He also claimed that a point had been proved about the team’s fighting spirit.
Shkodran Mustafi with Laurent Koscielny and Sead Kolasinac

“That’s you guys thinking it,” he said. “As always, Arsenal is dead, Arsenal is not coming back. We always are alive, we always believe in ourselves but we all know that if you win the big games but lose the small games you’re not going to finish top of the league or even in the top four. If you win today and lose next weekend you are back where you were.”

Mustafi was similarly blunt when asked about the futures of the two star players, Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez.

“You want everyone to leave don’t you?” he said. “We need the players, not everyone can leave. Obviously they are important and everyone in the team wants them to stay.

“If you look at what Mesut achieved, you have to give him credit and respect. It’s sometimes stupid to just go out and say ‘he’s not good enough, he’s not this or that’.”

Manager Arsene Wenger said that Mustafi was “a leader and a winner” and likened his vocal dressing-room influence to that of club captain Per Mertseacker.

  41. Interesting by way that two players who have offered stirring response to media bullshit are German lads. Can pretty much add Xhaka to them also for pointing out hypocrisy over Swiss pen.

Not aware of any of our British players ever making comments of that nature.

Self-protection? Do they not see it as well, having only known football/life here? Are they-eek- not as intelligent and articulate, or as confident? (Whatever, I can’t blame anyone for not wanting the negative consequences of engaging truthfully with our press, but I love it from the players who’ve done so lately.)

Closest I ever saw was this from Theo, tucked in autobiography and picked up by no one in press as an interesting comment

‘People talked afterwards [he is discussing Ramsay’s broken leg] about how some clubs target Arsenal because they think kicking us will jolt us out of our stride. It’s the old ‘they don’t like it up ‘em’ kind of argument. As far as I’m concerned, it’s beyond doubt. People do try and kick us. The injuries we get aren’t a coincidence. They’re a direct product of the attitude some teams take into matches against us’

Pretty sure there’s some big ,and correct, criticism of press contained in that, albeit a lot less explicit than Ozil and Mustafi’s spot on comments

  44. after this fake outrage by the media against Arsenal twitter, its the perfect opportunity for the Arsenal fan base to unite, to fight back against the media, to say enough is enough, sadly I just don’t see it happening, yes some of the bigger blogs have fired some shots at the journos, but I just can not see them sticking to it, they have no interest in a united fan base, they are not looking to help build a siege mentality, no they want to stick to click bait anti arsenal, anti wenger, stuff that they have been doing for years.

The effect the Dean stats that come out the other day showed that our fan base can, to my surprise, get at an official, he got the sort of reception he deserves, and for me it influenced him to have one of his more even performances. I would think that he knew what was being said on twitter, and then when the crowd let him know their displeasure of him pre game, it surely put him on his best behavior, We need more of this from the home crowd, but it starts on line, on twitter, and of course in the blogs. We need our fans, our bloggers etc to unite the fans, stop attacking our club and unite the fans against our opponents, teams and officials,

  45. Excellent article Andrew I love reading what fellow Gooner’s think after a game. For me it doesn’t matter how we won, why we won or if the ref supposedly helped us win. We won an that’s what matters. I would say however some of these football journalists should learn rule 11 of the offside law. Tottenham were not as bad as some have made out we were just much better so lets hope we take the same attitude to Turf Moore

    Cheers

  46. Morning Phil – it was a fine day, more so because the was no doubt that the side playing the better football won.

  47. Well said Ed

Apparently, today the Telegraph footy gimps sneeringly described Saturday as our ‘cup final’.

Where to fucking start?! In a way, it’s absolutely glorious. The hurt is so clear. The dislike so amazingly strong. But, even more amazing, to be incapable or unwilling to try disguise it in the slightest.

Last but not least…the dislike, the hurt, the lack of disguise, the desire to lash out…and then not to be able to do better than that. Ha ha ha ha ha.

Our ‘cup final, when we’ve been in and won 3 of the last 4…and the team whose defeat has caused them that pain has not won anything in a decade.

Not quite as funny is the reality that such a dislike is not a temporary phenomenon, but can surely only be fixed, have been present for a long long time, have little or no restraints upon it, and, crucially, is guaranteed to be working actively to undermine us any way it can at all times.

That’s been obvious to me for many years, in the Telegraph and elsewhere. An extraordinary thing but simple reality. Only the origins and causes require debate, as well as the effects, and whether the astonishing bias is interlinked with, influences and is influenced by other domains.

    Thanks for “tabs” tweet/message:

I realise my naivety knows no bounds: I actually “investigated” supposed abuse from ‘someone/thing’ Arsenal towards a “journalist”!
I was amazed to find the entire thread critical of NC’s (of the Sun) – suitably dismissed.

For any meedja doubters like myself who usually avoid the twatteratti, I recommend reading through Custis’s thing above.

    Arsenal = Class.

  49. Chris Sutton, not the most popular plundit, was mercifully brief on the Özil “topic” and bored his way safely through the mountains of horse droppings left by the extra police presence (the twitter police) over the weekend:

“Everyone knew who Özil was when he arrived, what he is like etc. The criticism of this player has been OTT. He’s class.”

Took him about thirty seconds. When we consider the duration from Sky’s panel on this topic compared to Sutton’s merciful summary, it is odd. After spending gazillions on the broadcasting rights what kind of editor would insist on… They didn’t highlight his movement on the goals, or how he switched his position after Lacazette came off and set up three more chances. The sky post match review didn’t really talk about the Football match. What the coaches did before and during the match. Why Coquelin came on after Winks came on, unless I missed it through hypnotic boredom, no discussion on the Tottenham selection (unlike the intersting plunditry from Brady) etc. No matter how one slices or dices it, that is blinking weird coverage!
