Why I Am Disgusted With A Lot Of Arsenal Fans.

A guest post from  @TraderChris87

Three weeks ago, Borrusia Dortmund took on Bayern Munich. Whilst a few years ago this may have been a clash of the heavyweights in a Champions League Final, this is no longer the case. Dortmund struggling with injuries and having two of their best players poached by Bayern in the last couple of seasons and 2 of their current stars heavily linked with a move away are currently struggling in the bottom half of the Bundesliga, even staying bottom of the league for a short period of time, you would think that Jurgen Klopps job may well be on the line. Yet after a recent game, in a post match news conference, a Dortmund fan told Klopp “You led us to success and we will lead you through the crisis,” which got me thinking.

Honestly, I am ashamed to listen to Arsenal fans speak on TV, comments on post match reports and obviously on Twitter. To me I find it disgusting the attitude they posses to Arsene Wenger, Someone who has given his life to our club, made us successful beyond anyones wildest dreams, playing beautiful football winning trophies and quite literally, made us unbeatable. All this whilst revolutionising almost every aspect of the English game from training methods to scouting. At that point did he rest on his laurels, absolutely not. Realising that to make us a true giant in world football, we would need revenues to match those of the biggest clubs, he guided us through a tough transition financially whilst we navigated our move from Highbury to the Emirates, keeping us playing in the Champions League for the 18th year running, a record that only Real Madrid boast.

Most managers wouldn’t have even accepted the challenge of not only keeping us in the Champions League so we had the revenue to pay off the short term debt on the stadium (who knows how many years of not being in the Champions League would have set us back financially). Not only did he keep us competitive, he had to make a profit on player transfers most seasons at a time where Chelsea and Man City were spending quite literally billions and Manchester United, Liverpool and Tottenham were spending. Yet you never once heard Arsene complain about this restriction.

Does he get any appreciation for guiding us through a very difficult period? No instead he is getting hurled abuse by stupid people who think they know the first thing about running a football club, tactics, man management or economics. All this just a few short months after winning the FA Cup.

Well we have spent money and are still struggling some may say. Yes we are struggling at the minute there is no denying that. We are all disappointed at recent results and I can understand being frustrated but hurling abuse at the manager and calling for his head are definitely not the answer. Also, 2 transfer windows of having a net spend for around £100m does not mean we automatically have the right to be beating teams who have had the best part of a decade of spending a billion. Financial Fair Play may even the playing field. It caused Man City to curb their spending the summer just gone and Chelsea were only able to spend £80m on Fabregas, Costa, Felipe Luiz because of the £40m they had previously spent on David Luiz and Lukaku, allowing them to profit from those sales to spend the money.

Looking at our squad subjectively we are not far off competing for the title, I honestly believe that once this team starts gelling, things will turn around for us. Shad Forsythe needs time to implement his methods which will hopefully ease our injury problems and it will take time for Sanchez and Welbeck to learn the way their team mates play. You still see them making passes where nobody is running or them not anticipating passes from certain players etc. This will take time. All I can say is that when Arsene turns things around and when he gets us winning trophies again, which he will, there will be alot of fans who don’t deserve to celebrate and who need to look at their behavior and they way they have acted and hang their heads in shame.

  8. I couldn’t agree more – is Wenger perfect? – No, he’s not, and I believe he has made a massive mistake this season in failing to buy anything like the required level of central defensive cover (and also a genuine holding mid) BUT, he still should be praised and not criticised for the so called ‘trophy-less’ period. With no ability to buy top ready-made players and forced to sell our best players every season who, (quite understandably in my eyes) realised that AFC could not compete for trophies (or wages), and then have to replace them cheaply….. until they proved to be good enough to also play for the best teams in the world and left. And yet he still kept us in the top 4 which I don’t believe any other manager could have achieved – it took Moyes just 1 season to drop United right out of the top 4! So the first Season he had serious money to spend we suddenly had many first team players signing contract extensions and none leaving and we win a trophy! So in reality, this is really the first season that if we do finish outside the top 3 or 4, that it can be genuinely claimed a failure – ONE SEASON! I really believe that after all he’s done he deserves time to turn this around! We have a very young and seriously talented squad in most areas, and as long as Wenger does strengthen our defence, this team has every capability of growing and challenging for the Premier League and Champions League in the next couple of years. In the same way that Chelsea added the 2 key players to the key areas where they were weak, if we do the same we could be right up there challenging again.

  9. Thank goodness for a common sense view of the current issues regarding Arsenal.
I feel baffled to think that we are all AFC supporters yet our assessments of the AW are so vastly different and that the lack of understanding of what he has given to our club. The crticism towards him is totally OTT from many so called fans and it shows how strong he is to carry on without as much as hint of malice toward anything that individual fans may think about him. I guess he knows in his heart that the great majority of fans are right behind him. It is a shame that some of the fans views are fuelled by the media, who week after week are saying it is time for the manager to go. So again some of the fans seem to think that changing the manager will put all our problems behind us and we will suddenly become a club that will not lose any more games, think again, the stability that is in our club is sought after by all other clubs, but very few actually improve in the long term and in many cases things get worse. Thanks for your first class article Pedantic George.

  11. Great post Chris, however we don’t need ARSENAL to start drawing in the trophies again for some of these people to hang their head in shame they should be doing it now. Although I don’t agree with those who no longer support Arsene I respect their right to an opinion and understand their frustration. What I’ll never forgive is the disrespect shown to the most successful manager in our clubs history and to a real football innovator. ARSENE commands more respect from opposition fans than some of our own and for that fact alone those fans should realize they have disgraced not only themselves but our Famous club

  12. I had to quit twitter. The more idiots like shewore, DimTim and Pedro the Pedo ran across my timeline, the more i felt like stabbing them in the neck.

There seems to be little intellegence with those guys.

The idiots who continue to say Wenger doesnt do tactics or that he is aiming for fourth to pad his bank account are just stupid.

People with those type of opinions, where it is black or white cannot function in society.

I am ashamed of the fanbase.

  14. it seems some of these idiots are planning on chanting “we want Klopp” at the game tomorrow. I bet the are the sort of fools who say they are ashamed of Arsenal, or that Wenger is dragging the club through the gutter.

  15. @eduardo: Someone really needs to ask those people what would make Klopp want to be Arsenal-manager more: hostility towards the current manager in a period of bad results (which would happen with Klopp at Arsenal too) or loyalty and support during ‘hard times’.

Very naive from Bayern though: I can’t understand why Bouldy isn’t allowed to organise their defense properly. Spineless if you ask me.

  23. Excellent article – well played sir!

There are clearly some very thick idiots amongst the fanbase – and some thugs too.

Like the five WOB who broke the nose of one singing the 49ers song on Saturday in the north bank after the game.

Five on to one, keeping it classy there eh, lads? Getting your old club back, were we?

So interesting that this small minority are so often thug-like with their actions as well as their repugnant views, their neanderthal reasoning and media-led anti-club bias.

Despicable bullying types, hoping to intimidate the moderate (albeit frustrated) majority.

Their cause, sadly for them is dealt mortal blows with every win and every squad enhancing addition as the months sail by. They are becoming more extreme because they are close to an end-game which does not represent success for them, just an eternity in exile, stuffed to the gills with humble pie.

They are a detestable, disloyal laughing stock of a rabble.

The kind of fans that leave a game fifteen minutes before the end. We are actually better off without them, for they leave behind appreciative fans more than happy to applaude our lads off after a hard fought game that just happened to not go our way.

Doubtless they’ll reappear for the wins and the future cups, regrettably.

Lot of injury doubts or ineligibilities upfront. Welbeck a doubt, Giroud ineligible, Walcott out. I think we should let Poldi have go, at least as a sub. It is a German team and he’s a good finisher. Play him and Sanchez up top together in a 442, maybe. Here’s a proposed lineup:
    Martinez
Chambers, Merts, Kos (who apparently is available–but I hope he isn’t pushing to come back too soon; might not be match sharp but he is our best defender), Gibbs
    Ox, Ramsey, Arteta, Cazorla
    Sanchez and Poldi

Welbeck was due a breather after his exertions in the internationals anyway. Not sure if Plodders will get picked to start at CF, he might. The odds are not in his favour after the Southampton game but he could get the nod against ze Germans.

With yet another arsenal player hacked off the pitch for a duration by a fairly obvious hack that wasn’t even called as a simple foul (if an idiot like me could see it real time side on with players in the way, so could our old mate Smeagol…), I suppose we’ll see a little bit of rotation? Rosicky? Every cloud…hehe.

  40. A brace from Sanogo will do nicely, and it would be interesting to see Joel Campbell given a go. A hard call for the AAA tonight: how do you welcome Klopp with open arms while also convincing him of the warmth and support that is always accorded to the Arsenal Manager? I suspect they might not have quite thought that one through.
