Arsenal Destroyed – Blame Everyone

towel

Lost property?  A towel thrown in by some fans on Saturday …

So there we have it, the moment the media, pundits and moaning fans were waiting for.

The implosion predicted for 24 games came to pass. We were exposed as the weak-spirited over-rated shower of shite that we are. All is lost.  Give it up, throw in the towel and hope to finish 4th.  Blah, blah, blah.

After the game I tweeted this,

“The irony of fans calling the team “bottlers” whilst throwing the towel in after one poor game is lost on them.”

However, there is no getting away from the fact that we were thrashed 5 – 1 by Liverpool and it could have been much much worse.

Every other loss this season I have found mitigation for, not this time though.  We were abject.

To be honest, I don’t know where to start, but I suppose I have to start somewhere.

It’s easy to say that we conceded five goals so the defenders were poor, and they were, but they were cruelly exposed by a midfield that can be best described as inept.  We didn’t have a half-decent midfielder on the pitch until the hour mark when Rosicky took to the field.

You have to credit Jack for his fighting spirit, but that aside he was dire.  Not more so than Arteta and Ozil however.  All three were either dwelling on the ball or simply giving it away whilst appearing to totally neglect their defensive duties.

Without Ramsey the balance in midfield has all but disappeared.  So you could question why Rosicky didn’t start as he seems the only one who can fix that failing.

Why Gibbs didn’t start against a team littered with pace is another question that could be legitimately asked.

Giroud was starved of anything, but when, oh when, will he realise that he never beats an opponent with trickery, all that happens is possession is lost.  Still its hard to think any striker could have done much with the service he got, or should I say “didn’t get.”

Arsene said afterwards:

” At half-time I could have taken a lot of people off.  I just think the whole team failed to turn up with the right performance.”

and:

” Maybe it’s better if I don’t talk too much, go home and respond well on Wednesday night because I include myself in that performance.  It raises the questions that we have to answer on Wednesday night.

At least Arsene is questioning himself, as he should.

Right, rant over.

City dropped 2 points unexpectedly and that leaves us second, 1 point behind Chelsea.  Hardly the end of the world and they both have to go to Anfield yet.  There is still all to play for.

We need to show a bit of this:

Now is not the time to panic or lose faith.

Up the Arse!

    “Gainsbourg69 February 9, 2014 at 12:22 am Edit

    Here’s my post.

Given how Liverpool made no moves to supplant the numerous players they have out through injury, they are the same squad Arsenal mauled at the Ems just a few months ago. So what is different today? Simply put, Brendan Rodgers made lemonade with some Lemons that were rotting in the back of his fridge. He deployed a narrow, deep-lying 4-1-4-1 in order to compensate for the loss of Lucas Leiva and the two fullbacks (Johnson and Luis Enrique) who are out injured.

Rodgers got around his lack of a holding midfielder by telling Flanagan and Cissokoh not to cross the halfway line unless completely necessary. Naturally, this gave them less width, so they have to make up for it in some way. That other way was pulling Coutinho, Henderson and Sterling infield in order to outnumber our two central midfielders on the counter. Gerrard was simply there to hit long passes to the strikers, to take set pieces and act as another body if we happened to breach their cocoon. Up front, Suarez was made to play just in the gap between Monreal, Koscielny and the central midfielders. Suarez did the same, except he was a bit more forward and on the opposite side.

They gave us all the width we wanted because they were only interested in owning the middle. And since we’re a team which likes to cut in, this played right into their hands. All of the goals they scored from open play were almost identical. They sat back and waited for us to attack them. They would dispossess whichever Arsenal player had the ball and they were off to the races. Their narrow shape gave them enough numbers to overwhelm the midfield and they hit us through the same opening time after time. For those of you who aren’t lucky enough to live in the tropics, now you know what a cyclone feels like.
As far as what the pundits and the talking heads are concerned, this doesn’t make us shit. This game was won by a team who drilled this formation over and over and over again. Every one of their players executed their parts exceptionally well. This result was a huge surprise for the players and it will be a huge surprise for the other teams who face Liverpool from this point forward. Unlike Chelsea, Rogers didn’t play two lumps in the middle, he played a few skinny kids who have speed and good ball control. My hats off to Brendan Rogers and Liverpool.”

I have to say that I don’t really know whether he is right or not. I would have to watch the game again ,and I am not putting myself through that.

  3. Well put George – agree with those sentiments.

We have often begun games this season at a moderatly pedestrian pace and have ratched up the pressure and pace on the opposition as the match has progressed. They can be frustrating games to follow but I’ve always squared the approach as being consistent with pacing to last the course of the game – and the season – alongside a desire to avoid unnecessary injury.

Yesterday the vulnerability of this pragmatic style of play (assuming it is a conscious tactic) was ruthlessly exposed by a Liverpool side playing as well as I can recall seeing them play in the last ten years. We were four down inside 20 minutes and still largely in first gear. We seemed both shocked and mesmerised by Liverpool’s 18 minute onslaught that resulted in four goals. That we could only draw the second half 1-1 was almost as disappointing as that opening phase where the match was effectively lost.

Mid-Feb is an unfortunate part of the season to suddenly start playing as strangers. Certainly we were taken by surprise by LFC’s successful start but there was more to the nature of the AFC performance that was puzzling; there was no glue binding the side together, little togetherness, passes falling short and a general absence of the spirit that has proved so rewarding to the side for most of this season. Never had we seemed to miss more Ramsey in the middle or Theo up front.

Giroud’s normally terriific linking play was absent as there seemed so little to link with and his inability to play as a lone striker was quite cruely exposed. But the bigger mystery for me was the absence of Gibbs and Rosicky; I initially assumed injury or lack of fitness yet they seemed fine when they took to the pitch.

On balance, if it HAD to happen, I’d prefer such a setback to occur now rather than any later in the league programme or in a cup game. That we ceded the league lead to CFC is a matter of huge regret and our failure to capitalise on Citeh’s stutter is of course very disappointing.

But as George says, we remain superbly placed to dust ourselves down and battle back to the performance standards that have hallmarked the majority of the Arsenal season so far.

I suspect the reaction will come on Wednesday – a game both sides really will want to win very badly.

That yesterday’s result could ultimately prove more damaging to the red mancs in the long run is an irony that should escape few.

  4. @Andrew, @George,

I was going to write a match report, but I saw last night that George was going to submit a post.

As I was at the game, I thought I would add a few thoughts. I am not sure that I agree with Gains above, that this was any kind of tactical master-class by Liverpool. To me, the 1st 2 goals to concede was just unbelievable. Liverpool knew we had to come at them, and they just concentrated on pressing (which they had the energy to do), and knocking the ball long to Sturridge and Suarez.

I was worried before the game that we were unbalanced. Ox, Wilshere, Ozil, Cazorla – all touch players, but physically unimposing. I knew that Liverpool would get stuck in and close down the ball, and the number of times we were hounded off the ball and caught in midfield after going 2 goals down cost us badly. The absence of Flamini and Ramsey was significant. Of course, after going 2 goals down, they wouldn’t have perhaps made a difference to the overall result, but the gaps in the midfield would have been more plugged, and the fight for the ball more pronounced. I agree with those who say Rosicky should have played from the start. But I am not AW. And hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Of course, there is a rush to condemn and reach conclusions based on this. But I prefer to look at the last 40 games played of premiership football. Which I think, shows that we have amassed the most points. Of course, people point to a lack of wins against the usual top 4 hegemony, but that doesn’t take away the show of consistency. We have enough quality to know that we are still going to present problems for all these teams in the upcoming fixtures, and whilst we have been so gleefully written off in some quarters, annoyingly for them, we are only 1 point behind. The return of Ramsey and Flamini, and even a Kallstrom entrance, as we need more balance. I think we should also consider that both Ox and Wilshere were not 100% match sharp, both having just returned from injury. We can improve and bounce back.

the daily mail is showing a picture of Arsene Wenger falling over outside some train station ……… the comments from people are of the ” its about time this overrated manager got what he deserved, he gets an easy ride for his mediocrity blah blah”

Can someone explain this disgraceful vitriolic behaviour and this eagerness to humiliate and insult Wenger?

This man has given his life to Arsenal to bring us trophies, new stadium, financial success and some of the best players and football the premierleague has ever seen.

If we arsenal fans had an ounce of dignity we would have already burned the daily mail buildings to the ground.

Ivan should sue them. and of course no daily mail reporters EVER again in our press conferences or even at our stadium.

Good points PG and AA. Agree with you AA that it hurts to let Chelsea overtake us. Hopefully not for long.

It would be madness to burn ourselves to the ground for the entire 90 minutes, especially when we are going to play every 3-4 days. However we do need to control and also adapt to situations. Teams will try all sorts of game plans against us. Expect manure, Bayern, etc to take note of the blitzkrieg that tore us apart.

If anyone in the team feels sorry for themselves or starts to think we might not finish first, I hope Arsene gives them a good kick up their back side and tells them to get on with their jobs.

This team has fantastic character though. I back these guys to come roaring back.

    Come on Arsenal!!

Hunter, I head that the MOTD lot showed that picture of Wenger fallen over and had a right good giggle about it. How the fuck is that allowed on national tv?

I havent watched a lot of MOTD, but I havent ever seen them show photos. Only videos where Alan Hansen puts a red circle around some random player and asks what he is doing there. How is what they did not disrespectful to a manager? I hope Arsenal raise a complaint.

If the MOTD lot want to wank over Mourinho or Ferguson, fine. Why so much hatred and bitterness for Wenger though!

  10. I’d have to say that Liverpool payed with some impressive tactics yesterday, considering how easily we contained them at the Ems and that they had several first choice players injured.
Many of their team were ordered to stay in their own half, we got sucked into their half in limited numbers – they crowded us off the ball easily and ran fast and directly at our out numbered center backs, why on earth nacho and Sanga were so far forward for much of the game without doing anything helpful was frightening.
Our midfield had a stinker. Arteta Özil Ox and Jack got themselves into a right mess over and over again.
The ref was very generous to the home team’s tackling techniques too.

I wrote a post for George on how good Arteta has been for us this season – hindsight eh? Hopefully he can use it on another day.

But Hunter is right, and we can predict the following quensequences. The media will go into hyperdrive-inter galactic 4th dimension mode (ie they will exaggerate to an extent you would not believe possible). Liverpool, whom I sort of like, will become the Battle of Britain (part 4, series 7, episode 37 and a half, SAS). Chelsea will become the tactical maestro touch-of-genius alter-ego but OK chaps. Arsenal will become shooting season and yippie it’s Feb-implosion time for us ugly spineless lazy foreign short tippy-tappy scrooge types. We will not win, we will get “lucky breaks”. We will not draw we will be “outplayed”. We will not lose, we will be “destroyed, taken apart”.

Arsenal-Yoo will be touted as the match of millennium, another kick-start to the Yoo season, let’s ALL ensure we takes sides against Arsenal shall we.

Arsenal fans will cower on street corners like stray urchins begging for pennies.

And all of that matters not. All that matters is how Wenger, Bould and players respond on the field.

  12. I pity anyone who believes our season is over after yesterday’s mauling. The consistency shown by this group over the past 14 months, their “mental strength” after every setback has been proven time after time. Somebody on twitter posted the following:
    After Villa – WWWWWWWWWW
    After Utd – WWWWD
    After City – DWWWWWWWD

Yesterday was an aberration. Pool pressed us from the kick-off when we simply lumped the ball forward for a turnover leading to the 1st freekick. As a team we were simply unprepared for their intensity. I tweeted that we fell on our own sword; our standard game plan of starting slowly and cautiously. Falling 4 goals behind in 20 minutes pretty much destroyed our tactic.

Some of us, in our disappointment, are taking a leaf out of the doomer template and hunting for scapegoats, with the usual negative consequence of turning the herd on the perceived weak link. Wenger took the lead by taking accountability for the result together with the entire team. In a necessary postmortem my biggest concern is our midfield. That was where we all expected we would have controlled the game. None of that group, the 5 that play between the defense and and our lone forward, covered themselves in glory when subject to Pool’s high pressing game. I think Gains and Muppet have covered that ground fairly well.

Finally. Thank heavens for PA. I don’t think I would have bothered turning up at that other place as the usual suspects would have done my head in.

  16. Somebody sure cut a hole in that fence. But there are some really good things to take out of this game…seriously.

    • We were given a penalty AND
    • We scored from it.
    • We’ve taken bigger drubbings than this in the past and always bounced back.
    • We can’t play any worse than we did yesterday…surely?
    • We beat them on possession (57%) and saves made (7 vs 5) and yellow cards (2-1)
    * I got the “best’ piss-take sms from my son at 25 minutes…”No worries. L’pool will let you guys have a bat soon.”
    • We didn’t let Suarez score. Again.
    • They couldn’t beat us in the second half 1-1
    • I’m sure we were on top until they got those 3 or 4 lucky goals. (Well maybe that’s a bit of a fib…my nose just grew 4 inches)
    • We have the best travelling supporters of any club in the league. “Six, five..we’re gonna win six, five.” Magic, lads.
    • So are we worried? Are we hell. Keep the faith.

    A footnote on worry.
Why worry? Either you’re healthy or you’re not. If you’re healthy, then you’ve nothing to worry about.
If you’re sick, then one of two things may happen. You’ll get better or you’ll die. If you get better then you’ve nothing to worry about. If you die one of two things will happen. You’ll go to heaven or to hell. If you go to heaven then you’ve nothing to worry about. If you go to hell, just think of all the friends you’ll be able to have a beer with. So, why worry?

I told you I was serious.

  21. When the sun printed the story about Liverpool supporters, no one in Liverpool bought the sun until it stopped distributing there. I suggest Arsenal supporters don’t buy the mail and don’t watch more.
Anyway back to the match. The first two goals came from dead balls, something we have been very strong on this season. It was that platform which gave Liverpool the chance to sit back and hit their speed players on the counter.
We don’t do sit back and accept a small defeat and this why we have had big defeats against good sides that score against us early then sit back and counter. In our eagerness to get back level we play in our opposition hands, perhaps we need to be abit more patient.
In big games early goals skew the way the game unfolds. I’m not saying we was unlucky but on another day and all that.
I had said on posts awhile ago I didn’t think we would win the league this season and before the season George and many others thought this season would be a stepping stone to next year and so we are still ahead of where we are supposed to be. The crunch point is after the Everton away game, if we are still close then we will win it. This is our time on the outside of the wide point of the bend when it straightens out we will see where we are.
I did list positives yesterday as Szczesny has really grown into a top class keeper and even though Kos and Per spent alot of time running backwards I thought they both played well

They would lose their seats to local school kids. So many options.

Arsene was happy to “front up” and take all the barbs and abuse on behalf of the club when the club were skint, when the board were happy to sit back and play games with their comments to the press etc. whilst they got on with their civil war ( a civil war which the ITK experts never commented upon…) We may not have agreed with their policies but that was their choice then and it’s probably the same now.
I was not kidding when I said I’d eat all the hacks food myself and give away their seats if I was in charge.

I thought three of the five Liverpool goals were horribly straightforward – a long ball hit early – and it seemed to bemuse our highly experienced players – most unusual.

It was very difficult watching the match live. I had to turn the volume increasing down as the plundits increasingly gloated (and lied about fouls/offside, etc). The real mercy was that when it came to the highlights, I skipped through all commentary (x32). There clearly was going to be a wankfest and judging by the comments here – much juice was splattered.

On another note, some time ago I wrote about having a Liverpool fan in my face for a period of time. That fan was out of my life, but the one text I got during the match was from him. It simply said “Boom!”. I have Gooner friends whose phones lit up. They had to ignore whatever came. And that’s the reason I don’t twatter.

“Fine”, I thought. He’s surely in a pub somewhere, pissed out of his brains (cos that’s what his life is all about). I quickly confirmed to myself that I hadn’t heard from him in 3 or 4 months. I witnessed him “watching” Crystal Palace v Arsenal. He drunkenly insisted, constantly, that Arsenal are “favoured”. He insisted it was all “banter”.

One day I caught him sober, and he started with his spiel.
I told him, firmly, “This isn’t banter, you’re a sniper”.

I won’t bother you with refshite other than to say that he cast the dye when BFG4 “fouled” Suarez and the subsequent free-kick produced an offside goal.

Once they scored a very good second I felt we panicked; we went gung-ho trying to get a goal back and made it easy for them to score the third and fourth with the huge gaps we left behind.

It might have been different if Rosicky had started but I understand why he didn’t. We have four big games in 11 days and at 33 Tomas can’t play in every one. He might have been held back for Man Utd. Arsene said Gibbs had a small problem with his calf quite recently and has only used him off the bench, I think it’s a case of Gibbs not being ready for 90 minutes yet, rather than him having been dropped in favour of Nacho.

Damn gangster, Vidic, let two Fulham players stroll past him in the death leading to a gaol by Darren Bent. God is alive I say. Now for real revenge on Wednesday.

  46. Afternoon, y’all. On Friday night, I was cursing my misfortune that I had an event to attend that would keep me from really watching the game. About 7:00 am Saturday, I was grateful for the distraction. I had what I thought was the perfect set up in my hotel room: the TV could be rotated so that I could watch the game in the mirror while I was getting ready. What it meant was that I got to watch the horror on my face as a disaster unfolded on the screen. I felt bad for abandoning ship at halftime, but I had no choice. I almost feel like I should go back and watch it now; like I unfairly avoided some kind of punishment.

Anyway, I wasn’t angry. I felt the same way I feel when something disappointing happens to my kid. Sick to my stomach, helpless, wanting to be able to fix it but unable to do a thing but watch it happen. And afterwards, just doing what I can to offer support.

So we go again on Wednesday. And who the hell knows what kind of effect today’s game will have on Manure. We just have to pick ourselves up and get back on the horse. I’m confident the boys will respond.

  47. I agree with LEOs regarding the lineups against pool. There were players being saved and managed for the next few games we have lined up. I thought the players on that pitch, on any given day, were strong enough to get the right result.
I also agree with RANTTETA . If you watch the game again you will notice many a pullbacks, set picks and fouls of small nature that were not called as such but certainly had an effect on the rhythm of our players. There were offsides not called on both sides and quite a few rotational targets that repeatedly ended up on the ground. That’s why a few of our players were losing their cool.

There were 2 clear yellows committed by Stevie G Wonderboy. Not given of course.
Outcome of game would not have changed.
Our lads in midfield gave up when Liverpool started to tackle hard – they realise by now they will never be protected and actually get punished when they try to protect themselves, so why bother.
Everton, Manu, Stoke, Sunderland, Newcastle, Chelsea do it to us every year.

  50. just managed to make myself watch the first half again, we had two chances at 1-0 and another just after their second.it was then it just fell apart. The midfield apart from giving the ball away cheaply were out of position so many times that when we did lose the ball there was no protection for the cbs. we certainly need to learn a bit of patience i9f other teams score against us early.
