Wenger’s pitiful eleven hold London …
Well that was all rather easy, wasn’t it?
Spurs were riding on the crest of a United-beating wave, and we were putting out a pitiful team. So I read.
From @TheHighburyInn: “Wengers pitiful starting XI Taking the FA Cup & spurzzz for granted Could end up in tears!”
I despair at these miserable bastards on twitter, I really do.
The reality was that we fielded eleven very good players. Dominated the game and won at a canter.
Were we at our devastating best? Not really, but I think we could have stepped it up, had we needed to.
All in all a very satisfying win against the hated neighbours.
Tomas Rosicky was outstanding and Gnarby looks ready for first team action.
Fabianski, who was going to let us down badly, according to the twitter experts, never put a foot wrong. Again! When was the last time he did, I ask you? Must be years ago now?
Right, that will do from me, we have nine days of gloating/rest before the next game.
Let’s enjoy it.
Up the Arse.

Well: that was nice then and I have to say that despite my generally positive attitude I wasn’t at all confident before the match – whereas I had been extremely confident about all the games thus far this season. We had an early scare, but Fabianski came to the rescue (relief after he had unaccountably passed the ball into touch) and gradually we started to exert pressure and control the game. I have been wondering about a Gnabry/ Walcott pairing for some time now and it was great to see how quickly we adapted to that new way of playing and how quickly we passed and played. I guess that had we signed Suarez in the summer that type of movement would have become the norm, rather than the find the target man approach we have adopted with Giroud as our main man.
So now we know we have two ways of playing, and that of course opens up all sorts of options and makes it hard for other managers to know which Arsenal threat The Arsenal will unleash from their arsenal. It also means that we don’t need to be in the market for a Giroud look alike, as we already have one and a half of those, but could be on the lookout for another Walcott/Suarez type player. Lark song and sea sounds in the air, and options, options everywhere as the late and almost great John Betjeman nearly said.
But I digress, for the useless Gnabry whose selection I was told by my Twitter line proved that The Arsenal were ripping off the fans by charging full prices to watch a reserve team, carved a glorious diagonal hole through the middle. Aided by a fabulous run into space by Theo that took two defenders with him, the visionary Gnabster located Santi with a slut of a pass that simply begged to be taken advantage of. And take advantage he did, causing riotous scenes all-round the Emirates from the true supporters and in pubs, front rooms and computer dens world-wide for the rest of us plastics. I have never seen Santi play better than he did yesterday, and as he did against Liverpool, he showed that he is a big match player with an assassins touch.
I hope TV5 was not too badly hurt, but it was kind of reassuring to see Per enter the fray at the start of the second half, especially as TV was already holding a yellow and could easily on a Deanday been sent to jail (without passing go) for a second challenge that although legitimate was oh so risky. We sat back a bit then, but suddenly there was TR7 bursting forward, dispossessing Rose on the halfway line and then winning the foot race before chipping the hapless Lloris to put the tie beyond doubt. (I like Lloris, because although I can’t remember the exact game last season – but it was after we had lost to them and they were still doing well – he did something strange and useless that gifted a goal when Spurs were winning easily, leading to loss of points and, more importantly, a noticeable loss of confidence – it was a season turning moment.) Czech mate, and that said John was almost that: we might have – should have – had a penalty, but so might they, and the game ebbed away without further incident, save for the moment when Theo finally achieved official Arsenal hero status. I trust that when it is time for his bronze statue to be cast, it will be of him being carried regally from the stage, grinning from ear to ear and gently pointing out that it was Two-nil to The Arsenal. It doesn’t come much better than this, to be honest.

What about this from Passenal posted yesterday (January 4, 2014 at 10:48 pm) for a post match review? I, for one, look forward to posts from this insightful lady….
“Just back from the game and reading the comments it looks like I missed a few things, which were highlighted on the TV coverage. But these were my thoughts from my seat in the upper tier North Bank.
Really excellent, controlled and professional performance from our guys. Tomas Rosicky was head and shoulders the best player on the pitch – he was everywhere and really living up to his nickname of ‘Little Mozart’ as he conducted the show. Never was a goal more deserved or raucously celebrated by players and fans alike and it was lovely to see all the hugs for him from his team mates at the end. Clearly they love him as much as the fans do. He is really having an excellent season, rolling back the years and reminding us of what a fantastic talent he is and how much we missed by losing him for all that time. I don’t know if it was shown on the TV, but when Arteta went off and we lost Theo, he was given some instructions from the boss and then started directing proceedings defensively as well!
I thought Theo did a good job up front on his own and was really unlucky with some of those offsides, or so it looked from where I sat. He was also unfortunate to find Lloris in good form, because his saves kept the score respectable even though we were so superior to the spuds, 2 – 0 didn’t really reflect our complete dominance of them. Was Adebayor even on the pitch? I wonder if he was really fit or was he just too comfortable in our defenders back pocket along with Soldado?
Gnabry has come of age – I would have no concern with him playing again if he can maintain that level. He was very impressive today and that assist for Santi shows that he also has excellent vision and decision making for such a young player.
My only concern now is that we may have paid too high a price for this win with injuries to TV, Theo and now I hear Arteta went off with an injury too? I also expect the FA to ban Theo for nothing, while the spud fans get away with throwing coins at an injured player! Fingers crossed all the knocks are minor and the week off allows a few of the walking wounded to make a welcome”

As for last night’s game I reckon, as I think most people do, it was a decent performance from us against a Spuds side who were pretty poor.
As someone said last night a real TEAM performance from us, and whatever the opposite is from THFC.
If Eriksen had tucked his early chance maybe the confidence they so obviously lacked might have flickered. The longer the game went on however the more their players looked like they wanted to be anywhere but playing football.
I could almost pity them.

Excellent synopsis GR and FOREVER, PASSENAL. very proud of the team and their accomplishments to date. Some of the short passing interplay was the best I have seen all season. We will see this crew hitting their potential before very long. We have been great in open play and we have even shown great patiance and creativity against parked buses. Our only weakness is the PIGMALL and their most bent referees which in turn cause us more suffering on the injured front.
And they can be very effective sons of b•••••. Last month saw us going from a team getting to semi full strength with only two long term injured players still out to having seven guys out due to sickness and injuries picked up over only 3 GAMES. three games in rapid succession where open season was declared on our guys and we held our breath because we knew another leg break serious injury was not just a probability but very much in the cards due to f••••••ng pigmall and their lackeys.
So my question remains the same as always. What will be AW’S ultimate strategy against these scumbags when time comes that they try to wrestle out of our hands what rightfully belongs to us on merit. We have been down this path before and we were dislodge twice in the past using these dark tactics. Unfortunately his strategy filling the team with four to five England players and/or hopefulls hasn’t worked out to satisfaction. JACK is still one of still the most rotationally fouled players I can think of. So much for protecting the national team jewels and its future. These demented pri••$ could care less if the national team went to the WC without any of its ARSENAL weapons and mainstays. Lord have mercy on them souls , because I personally have no respect nor mercy in me for these merchants of bent and tilted outcomes.

on that…im reading comparisons between what theo did and what adebayor did while at city…..one was injured sitting there smiling and making a humour gesture of the score while the other ran half the pitch to go and yell provocatively like an animal in front of the fans…it is not the same thing. Why do grown people, professionals, mix the two up? why?

Just remembered what I originally logged in to say – well done Theo. I was one of those who just couldn’t see him as a CF, but he has proved me wrong. One of the things I really like and respect about Theo is that he recognises his deficiencies and works on them. Compare and contrast Aaron Lennon, who is basically the same player he was five years ago, and furthermore, about on the level that Theo was at 18.
To me, he looked noticeably more at ease and less nervous before the game than Podolski. I wonder if LP has more of a mental problem playing at CF than any issue with his game? If he and the team can learn to make it work, we will be cooking on turbo-charged gas.
the other thing I forgot to say was to PG – it’s a perennial failing of football fans and pundits to retain perceptions which are behind the times.

Pithy summation from PG and excellent from Foreverheady and Passenal.
Only issue I’d take up with Passenal was the drinks order Arsene asked TR to organise ‘cos we all know venga don’t do tactics.
Terrific team performance and especially thrilling to see young GunnerNabry doing so well; many of us have been following his seemingly inexorable progress towards the top these last couple of years now. His composure belies his years and his vision and lack of fear are something to behold.
Spuds eh? How the mighty have fallen from their lofty perch built on the false foundations of a profligate summer transfer frenzy and little else.
On behalf of Frank: dear oh dear.

Talking of tactics, Tim Sherwood got it all wrong. You can’t cede the midfield to Arsenal and expect to win. It struck me in the build-up to the game that his tactical approach was similar to that of fans. Adebayor is a very good player but football is a team game and only a truly exceptional footballer can win a game “on his own”. (I use quotation marks for obvious reasons.) We have a couple of truly exceptional players, but one of the qualities that make them so is their selfless team play. The 4-4-2 system is one a lot of fans hanker after but it is inherently inflexible compared to 4-3-3 and its variations, and it makes it harder to defend and attack as a team, it seems to me. Sherwood fixated on a particular player and a particular formation and stuck with them because they worked for him before, but he didn’t analyse the reasons *why* they worked and whether they would against Arsenal. That’s one of the differences between a top manager and an enthusiast.
Still, the Sp*ds have got that Transfer Window Trophy to keep them warm.

Gnarby looks like a real player, the Ox is back next week and Zelmanen is being promoted to the senior team next week too.
And people want us to buy another striker, what for – just because we have some money?
I’ve been saying it for a long time – this ‘must buy a striker’ meme is just a lazy blogging reaction from people who don’t know the real strength in depth at the club.

I thought we needed another central striker but Bendtner and Theo have come good in time and both look as if they can be very dangerous. So now I don’t think there is any point in bringing in anyone but one of the very best strikers in the world, which probably means not this window.

I think it is entirely possible that given reasonable luck with fitness Theo could become the next true Arsenal legend. He looks every bit as good on Youtube as any of the strikers we are linked with, but crucially has been scoring his goals at the highest level in the hardest league. Better by far to keep the powder dry for the considered additions we will need to make next summer.

Always love coming here to read Passenal and Zimpaul’s and everyone else’s thoughts on the game.
Some of you will know that I’m a long time fan of Theo Walcott and what he brings to the team. He played well ‘up top’ but a word of caution: Dawson, he’s not very good. The perfect game for Walcott to have a run at CF?
It’s like it has been with previous players at CF, including Plodders. You need to see them play several games in succession against various opponents before, as a fan, you can see what the coaching staff are working at.
With Walcott and Podolski, I’m not worried. Often this allegedly tactically inflexible team varies what they are up to during a game. We have often seen the two playing up top with another forward for spells, or as they cut in from one side or by themselves. Even though they might not get those games in succession in the CF position in the league, they’ve been working on it over a long period, in training, for spells during games etc.
What was really encouraging from yesterday’s stroll against the unfortunate neighbours was how well the team around Theo adjusted to play without a Giroud or Bendtner type. Very exciting! In pre-season we saw combinations involving Chamberlain *sobs* Walcott at striker and others similar to what we saw yesterday with Gnabry filling in for the Ox. “Liquid Wengerball” – Alan Partridge
With Bendtner and Walcott now out for a spell those minutes for Podolski against Cardiff were important, only a fully developed Groaner could’ve moaned after the West Ham game about Plodders starting ahead of Bendtner (and, they did!).
All in all, not a bad return from the Xmas and New Year crunch. Of course there were the expected injuries (unless you are a pathological Groaner) and that’s why they call it the Xmas crunch (I read the term ‘Xmas Crunch’ on the back of a packet of cigarettes I brought from the Sports Science bar). Hopefully Walcott’s injury is not serious. If it is, how far is Akpom behind Gnabry? Heh! A shame the Next Gen series got cancelled, Gnabry definitely benefitted from the competition.

The contrasting styles, tactics, formations and players in the last 4 or so games are so interesting. How on earth do you plan for Arsenal when you don’t know what pattern the team might adapt game by game. What’s not fluid is attitude. I smiled at Arsenal, 2-up, not much counter-threat, 85 minutes gone, no point in improving a goal difference, and going for the third; even after Theo’s stretcher took him joyfully past the massed ranks of Spurs fans. Something interesting at Arsenal, the team so evidently enjoys playing together, whether times are tough or a little easier.
Theo worked very hard yesterday, on and especially off the ball; hope he’s OK. Now aside from that being a good thing, he’s just explained to us, to his manager, and the world at large, how much he wants this … role. Perhaps Arsene asked bluntly, Theo, I agree it would be an interesting option for the team, but how much do YOU want it?
I was disappointed by such lacklustre Spurs. They are in fact better than that. Surely.
Oh man, Santi’s goal, a left-foot first-time thwacker, moving slightly in the air at such speed, and young Gnabry’s lovely assist. The replay shows Gnabry had several moments when he might have released, and options where to pass because Theo was an option with a dink inwards; he waited until the very last for that gentle deeply angled left foot pass. Santi, quite far away when Gnabry started his diagonal exploration, was running like a crazed madman waving an arm to say “free, free at last”. A beautiful goal.

(Rosicky and Ramsey have played on the flanks when needed, but I prefer to see them at what I am happy to describe as CM)
Striker: Giroud / Bendtner / Podolski / Walcott / Özil (at least one start as striker for those minnows German in the Autumn when Plodders and others were out) / and add in The Ox and Gnabry if you feel like it / Sanogo injured, so Chuba Akpom takes his place for me!

A absolutely great quote from forever which I for one will be using in the future.
there was a great atmosphere in the stadium yesterday from beginning to end however the spuds were very quite maybe they have lost confidence in their team. like passenal I missed some of the incidents that was highlighted on tv because I was drunk on the flavour of derby day cup tie, oh and a few cold Guinness, but I have watched the complete match again and although on the day I thought clatts had a good game watching again I cant believe how much he missed or got wrong.
refs don’t think bookings are important but they can make a huge difference. I made it he missed four bookings for spurs players and a sending off. add to that the monreal penalty and for them a foul they should of had just outside the box and his performance would rank a lot lower. fortunately the difference between the sides meant it was irrelevant to the outcome.
Serge was another great plus and his interplay with both Thomas and Theo was brilliant and another indication the youth network is producing better and better players
Fins, add to that squad Benik who is back fit and scoring and Hayden who also plays dm and were doing great.

My word, how can Merlot pay back the loving enthusiasm with which it was consumed last night with a hangover like this?
A two goal lead against the swamp dwellers has given us cause for concern in the past but this time, even when down to 10 men, it was more a question of by how many more could we manage? It was a great all round performance and if we did miss some chances, it was more a question of having created a half chance out of little. Plus of course, there was a display by Lloris which definitely made him the soggy chips MOM.
Fab on the other hand, bar his excellent save early in the first half, was virtually unemployed so good were the lads at sweeping up any threats.
I have to confess a liking for this 7, 8, 7 formation we employed. Especially when the lung busting runs of defenders assisting the forwards and vice versa is accompanied by swift movement and quick passing. It was the Napoli first leg, first half all over again. One can only pray that the injuries we received yesterday are only minor and our sick bay is quickly emptied.
It is a bit unfair to single out anyone for MOM honours as they were all good but perhaps the oldest and the youngest, Tomas and Serge stood out the most for me. Tomas was everywhere and his goal a thing of beauty and joy. Rose plucked and phucked, a 40 yard gallop, an oh so clever chip over Lloris…Give that man a lollipop! No make it an ice cream. With a chocolate log. And some hundreds and thousands sprinkled on top. And a cherry. Thank you Tomas. Wish you were 10 years younger, though you played as though you were.
Serge who is some 15 years younger played with the freshness of youth, the talent of a much older player and created more than a little havoc. His pass to Santi was so well judged. Santi’s finish was exemplary.
I was amazed to see the match stats. Spuds apparently had more possession and weren’t far behind with shots taken. That none of these caused any apprehension, whereas whenever we had the ball we looked threatening and the pulse raced was perhaps the reason it all looked so easy.
Now for a nine day rest and the walking wounded returning. We have a little matter of a first day defeat to put right.

in the game against city, jack was given a two game ban but nothing was done about the reason jack showed the middle finger. is it acceptable for fans to come to the stadium and abuse players’ families? this campaign of respect should be a two way street.

By the way, the pull back for Nacho wasn’t on. There were two defenders covering and the cut back would have required a third runner ghosting in through the middle of the penalty area.

I think that Arsene is always working with an eye towards creating a lasting legacy, that is not only based on the unparalleled success he has brought us on the pitch, but by also ensuring that we have everything we need off the pitch to continue in the same vein after he is long gone. One of the best stadiums in football history (with the potential to be expanded further if needed), world class facilities and a strong team identity that runs throughout the entire youth setup ensuring that we have a steady influx of talented youth players looking to go through. Add to that our brilliant scouting network (no other club could have unearthed gems like Gnabry or Koscielny) and our very solid financial and whoever comes after Arsene (whenever that will be. Personally, I am hoping for 2050) will have the perfect environment to work with.
