Mesut Ozil, Super Deal

Today its a guest post from Sensational Arsenal, take it away young man

I found this comment by one Seamy82 on a sports website. I think he/she speaks for every Arsenal fan in saying:
“I would like to send out a big thank you to Tottenham Hotspur FC. Without you selling Bale to Real Madrid for such an astronomical fee, we wouldn’t have been able to sign the 3rd best player in the world. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.”

When I watched the World Cup in 2010, Germany was the team that played the best football. When I saw Ozil play against England, I genuinely only thought: “Arsenal player”; nothing else. I thought that Wenger would go for him in that summer, but was surprised to see him end up at Madrid. His world cup performance made people notice and there was no way we could have gone on a bidding war with Madrid. Even if we did, they would have gazumped us in his salary.

The reason Ozil is now an Arsenal player (Huge buzz just to type that up!!!) is due to careful monitoring of his situation all summer (to a small extent Arsenal would have kept tabs for the past three years), waiting for the opportunity and moving decisively when it presented itself. Credit must be given to Wenger, Gazidis and the team around them.

It is being said that we did our transfer very late. Yeah, how could Arsenal do it so late? Bale went to Madrid on the first day of the transfer window, Madrid kept offering us Ozil, but Arsene Wenger, being the stubborn fool he is, said: “No. I am going to be a petulant child (like how my fellow Arsenal supporters are with the club) and sign Ozil only on the last day of the Window”.

During the summer window, as I scoured the internet for some nice articles and comments to sit back and read about Arsenal, I consistently saw a type of comment “genre” that goes along the lines of: “If we spend X amount of money it will send a statement of intent.” Then as matches started going on, things started getting desperate. “If we sign some 30 million pound players and play them in the match, it will send a statement of intent” So we just chuck a player into the team? Then as it became obvious that there wasn’t a 30 million pound player on the team sheet against Tottenham, things started getting ridiculous: “If we sign a 30 million pound player and he is in the stands watching the match, it will send a statement of intent.”

What the fuck is this statement of intent? You dont buy a special player just to send a message to everyone else: “Hi. By buying this player, I would like to formally state my intent to win the premier league. I would like this to be noted by all the rivals and I fully expect them to duly hand over the premier league trophy now”.

Isn’t the main point of buying a player to strengthen the team? In this case, we added mouth watering attacking quality. Everything else is a knock on effect. This is a special player snapped at a special time and credit must be given to Arsene. Apparently PSG offered more money, but Arsene was the deciding factor.

More than arm chair managers and keyboard critics, more than ex-players looking for cash, players are the ones that can tell us about the manager:

“It is easy [to choose Arsenal], it is one of the best clubs in the world. It is a club with a fantastic story, with a boss who is one of the best in Europe and for me it is a dream. It is special.” –  Emiliano Viviano

“I had spoken to the manager at length on the telephone and he explained his plans and that he has faith in me and that is what I need as a player. ” – Mesut Ozil

“I am very happy for Mesut that he has joined such a great club…… an outstanding traditional club with a great coach who can deal well with young people.” – Germany general manager Oliver Bierhoff

“For me the boss will always be Arsene – always great for me and I know what he has done for the club” – Thierry Henry

Meanwhile, the Arsenal “Supporters” Trust, knowing that timing is everything, released the following statement:

“We welcome the statement of intent Arsenal have made with the signing of a world-class player like Mesut Ozil. It is a transformational signing for the club in terms of both transfer fee and wages paid. It is, however, frustrating that once again a window has closed with over £50m left unspent. The AST would like to see all available resources put toward strengthening the team.

This summer’s transfer window has also reinforced the AST’s view that the club need to overhaul their boardroom and football management infrastructure so they have the very best set-up to maximize the way in which the modern-day transfer window now operates.”

If you cannot be happy after owning the spurs’ ass on sunday and signing a super star – made for arsenal – player on Monday, then man you are fucked up.

Can the real supporters get together and release a statement disowning the AST and say that they have nothing to do with the real opinion of Arsenal fans?

When I posted this as a comment, it was heartening to see the unanimous responses here, deriding the AST statement.

Ozil, you were made for Arsenal. You will play some amazing football with some of the best players on the planet. You will be guided by one of the wisest and beautiful football playing coaches in the world. You will recognise fellow creative souls in Cazorla and Rosicky (push him out of your fantasy lineup at your peril). You will be served well by the fantastic players in front of you and behind you. We believe you will serve them well. You will love playing in this team. Welcome to the home of football. Welcome to Arsenal. Welcome home Ozil.

  1. Interesting links above.
I give my thanks to the great Bergkamp in the sky above that none of the leadership of the AST were involved, in any kind of way, with the negotiations that went on very long over this transfer.

    Thanks SA.

  2. Super piece there Sensational Arse..

After 3 years @ Real Madrid, getting a 24-year old world class player @ the height of his game devoid of the hype, playing for the most intelligent, loyal & trustworthy manager of the best team on the planet will feel like the perfect fit for The Oz.
I can’t wait to get the games rolling.

no injuries on national duty please!

I would like to offer my sincerest apologies for questioning your abilities and vision. Please forgive me for calling for your firing — I was extremely dumb and naive. My statements were premature and born out of frustration rather than any clarity of thought.

And you are right, we probably should say thanks to the spuds for helping to make Ozil’s move to Arsenal a successful reality.

    Well done them!

And welcome to the Home of Football, Ozil.

  10. Interesting to note that Gnabry’s been listed in the 1st team on arse.com. Good for him, covers for Ox I suppose.

Also, with Poldi “gone till November”, AW’ll probably deploy the triumvirate of S22-B52-P30 to cover for handsome man G12.

Looks more the complete team now (28-man squad) that can compete ably in all 4 competitions…(watch out C1C)
Here’s to the return of 2-3 ailing players within the next few weeks.
    Absolutely thrilled with our squad

  13. I suspect the AST Declaration was the result of their spending a long time preparing a damning statement about the FAILURE OF THE CLUB in the transfer window – only to have the rug swiftly pulled away at the last minute – resulting in the ‘spoiled-child’ whine they foolishly put out.

As I said last night however AST are but a tiny pimple on the Greater Arseland – I do not feel the urge to scratch them on what might be the last day of Summer.

The other interesting thing about Ozil joining us, I think anyway, is AW appears to have faith that Sanogo is going to play and contribute over the next 15-20 games at least. I have seen it said elsewhere, wisely to my mind, that the boy is in a good position. His signing has been derided as an insult by the bin bag brigade. For the rest of us I do not think we have any great expectations of him lighting up our scoring or forcing Olivier onto the bench. Whatever he does, for me at least, will be a plus. The boy has no weight on him and for a youngster that is great.

  14. Super deal indeed. Maybe statement of intent is the wrong or just too hackneyed a phrase. Of course you sign a top class player to make your team better. I think everyone would suggest that’s always the highest priority. But there are all kinds of corollary benefits. See the Walcott, JW, Cazorla comments, the Podolski pictures. Our boys are really excited to play with one of the best players and the best creative playmaker in the world. Confidence will be even higher. The supporters are thrilled. The atmosphere will be electric at his home introduction and I think that miserable Emirates home support might improve, shirt sales will skyrocket this month–I’m buying one for myself with a player’s name on it for the first time in a decade and one for Limestonegunnerinho who was crushed when Fabregas and especially RvP left. His first question, a five year old, after jumping up and down in excitement once or twice was a cautious query–is he going to always be at Arsenal? I said don’t worry, he’s coming to be with Arsenal for a while and other great players will want to join him. It helps change the demoralizing narrative around Arsenal and the media have a big new story to run with and a respect for the club pulling off the signing of the summer. High ambition is clearly evident. Opponents will fear the creative attack of Cazorla and Ozil behind a speedy Walcott and a big strong finisher Giroud. AW has proven his pull, his savvy, his cred once again. And he’s made a huge investment in Wengerball which means more beautiful attacking football, which has been missing often over the last two years. There are lots of corollary benefits that follow from such a huge quality signing. The lift it has given to supporters, players, the club is priceless. Maybe that’s some of what people mean using that abbreviated and inelegant phrase. That’s the positive reading I’d give it. That is that they think it is positive for Arsenal in addition to the fact that he makes us a better team on the pitch purely at a technical footballing level.

I’m just thrilled. He was one of my favorites to watch, particularly for Germany, and it is fantastic that he is coming to the Gunners! All praise to AW (and IG and DL) for getting this deal done decisively. Hopefully he leads us to a triple in the next 3 years, like Sneider and Robben achieved soon after being forced out of Madrid, who have turned into a bit of a joke club, I’d say. Arsenal enhanced, Spuds in our dust, MU wobbling.

Hosh geldiniz Mesut Efendi! Turks of Stoke Newington are going to make you feel super welcome at Arsenal!

  24. I hear what you say Limestone, the point is valid no doubt. I suspect Wenger might simply say “football comes first”, or as he put it 95% of the work/success (what makes a difference) at Arsenal, now, is to coach (motivate, utilize) the team you have, 5% of work/success is about transfer business, perhaps an exaggeration for effect, but a point well made. We then went on to beat, and largely outplay and out-think, Spurs.

I want to sound a note of caution. Remember the atmosphere around blogs and the like when Arshavin arrived, and to many he was the answer, redeemer and super-star all in one who would carry us forward. It didn’t pan out, by degrees he became less effective, although a very clever footballer. Then he lost his place. Then he was sold.

I doubt Wenger, or anyone else, ever expected this trajectory.

Arteta, in contrast, was never in “super-star” bracket, a “good/great signing” and for some cynics, Cesc’s poor relative replacement. He cost about 8m-plus as I recall. His trajectory, although different time and much shorter to date has been different; from “fine, good, useful, on the whole” to “outstanding, bedrock of the midfield”.

Kos has been similar, as has, in other ways, Tomas post his multiple-season injuries, and Ramsey’s coming of age (both genuinely “like a new signing”, but hardly acknowledged as such). It looks certain Per and Olivier will deliver above expectations.
These were also statements of intent, there have been so many of them, we forget.

Ozil will fit right in; he’s in good company. He sounds like a decent youngster too, talks well about a poor but wholesome upbringing and the life of a Turkish immigrant family.

  25. Am I the only one enjoying the fallout from our Özil transfer? Half the Madrid squad have come out with orbituaries after losing such a great player, and now even the lesser Ronaldo is “angry” because of the transfer, calling it “bad news”. Just in case anyone is doubting: we haven’t captured some sort of Madrid outcast, we have bought a world class player who’d definitely make the squad for a World All-Star football team, if there was such a thing. Might even make the starting XI (depending on formation). Even after a couple of days, I am still overjoyed by the transfer. It’s probably the first time in ages I don’t mind the interlull.

    Ramsey Arteta

It gets better and better as more information emerges, this is one well timed lull.

From the above links the Ozil deal was born admidst the ashes of the Higuain deal – not so incompetent then: Florentino Perez snubbing PSG and Utd, his own fans and players because he had promised Wenger a gift (he could have fracked more wonga out of gas clubs).

A cosmic confluence, the player decided to play for Arsenal because, AW has more respect from the German coached then he does from some of the ‘expert’ fans, for Mesut because Wenger gave him faith” (heh!), Madrid preferred to sell to AFC (?)…
Tottenham’s grand moment eclipsed, Levy’s call to Perez on the Monday, it’s all too good to be true.

Almost as juicy a story as the Fizman handover* tale, perhaps more so. Joy.

*a story of which I know nothing. Of course Kronke must have, predictably, tried to shake off some of the shackles imposed upon him, the summer two years ago possibly being an example. It’s just that, I note, all the many experts on AFC finance never seem to refer to that story, and it’s consequence. Which is odd.

  45. Evil, I’ve been enjoying that reaction: Madrid players and supporters are in mourning and much unhappier with the departure of Ozil than happy with the arrival of Bale. And for good reason. Stupid business.

Zim, I completely agree with you and have sounded a note of caution elsewhere explicitly referencing Arshavin amid my delirious happiness about Ozil, and I loved the little Russian second only to George, I believe. I only wanted to highlight some of the other dimensions of this while fully agreeing that AW knows how to do the biggest job of getting a group to play well as a team. And the contrast vs. the Spuds makes that point perfectly–sure AVB will deserve a bit of time to try to do it, but the point was made nonetheless. It is important to improve players and Arteta has been my favorite player the last couple of seasons–quiet, unheralded, experienced, quality and class nonetheless. I know it is sort of crass and a base pleasure, but when you see a racially diverse group of young men 16-25 outside our beautiful new stadium (wondering whether they get much of a chance to watch the games very often inside given the cost involved) who really love the club get so excited and happy about welcoming a world great at age 24 and create an impromptu street party, I do feel that this was important and provides a big lift to them, to me, to all of us.

    http://www.vice.com/en_uk/read/the-madness-of-the-transfer-window

I hope he adapts, is fit and hungry to prove himself, works well with his teammates, and that we supplement in the next couple of windows judiciously as ever. This was a judicious move in more ways than one and potentially will help us on the path to even greater success.
