Is Arteta Really In Trouble?

Hi all,

Today Shotta and I muse about just how deep a mire Arteta finds himself in.

Pedantic George.

  2. doing well already, 2-0 down.

If we’re going to be a relegation battle team we could at least learn how to be park the bus cloggers.
Could be six or more today?

woeful defending, xhaka sent off, we are certain to end the day with 3 defeats from 3 EPL games, we are only off the bottom on goal difference at the moment

  12. weve just lured them into a false sense of security, we will now dominate the second half and win 6-3.
Oh look, out of the window, pigs flying, how marvellous!

I blame Wenger, any idiot can win the league, the dither old fool didnt have a clue.

  13. ha ha ha the pundit just said that Chambers should not have gone down when shoved in the face, “just stay on your feet and VAR will pick up any foul”, for God’s sake VAR didn’t pick it up with him going down, so what chance them picking it up if he did not go down.

would also ask would any other player have got a red for that Xhaka challenge, Atkinson seen it was Xhaka so sent him off on reputation

    FT: Arsenal u18s 2-2 Brighton u18s

The u18s remain unbeaten after their late equaliser, but drop two points off the top of the table.

Khayon Edwards and Amario Cozier-Duberry involved in the goals once again.

  15. 3 down, Xhaka gone because he went in seemingly 2-footed and Atkinson is shite.
Arteta still hasn’t accepted the individual ability limitations of each of his players.
Omitting Lokonga or Elneny and leaving Granit alone to marshal CM is dumb as hell.
As soon as Xhaka went off, Lokonga or Elneny needed to come on.

Seems MA’s so comfortable character-analyzing in adversity, the morale damage his mediocre tactics are yielding is secondary.
Continuously heaping this much pressure on himself and this team will be the end of him. Seems only a matter of time.

  32. If or some might say when those upstairs believe there is danger of a relegation dog fight , then Arteta will be in trouble, real trouble, despite KSE backing him to the hilt.
Would imagine those above him will view what they see as mitigating circumstances for now, Covid etc, but if this continues when he has a full strength team , he will be toast.
I reckon he will have until the end of Oct to significantly turn things around unless he were to lose his next three games.
What we saw today was completely baffling , how can professionals defend like that, unless they or the manager have some weird private agenda. Cedric over AMN at RB? And is Bellerín injured? Know he wants out, but Cedric has been appalling.
But, no matter how bad we are, what depths this team plumb, can always rely on the PGMOL to twist the knife , it now seems you are allowed to hit someone in the face if playing Arsenal, but not if you are an arsenal player. And Xhaka did lunge, but made contact with the ball, not the man, no way that would have been red on an Arsenal player.
Is this rock bottom? Or can things get worse? The league table doesn’t look good, does any manager recover from that sort of start?
And who could they bring in if they sack him? Don’t want Steve Round as interim!

  33. I hope Aman is joking about Xhaka, you can watch tackles worse than that every week that won’t earn a red. Got the ball, lower foot on the floor and second foot resting on that body going through the player but not legs on legs.
The tackle on Keiran in the second half was worse but not punished.
However the refs terrible display and Xhaka being a scapegoat again means Mikel gets away from the criticism he deserves for his team selection, his tactics and his player and game management.
I think slot of people should watch the 8-2 defeat at old Trafford again and see differences in the games to see just how bad we are.
On that day we had players missing like today, we were raped by the ref like today but on that day everything manure hit went in, we played some really good football and we always looked like we could score a goal.
Today’s only attempt on goal we didn’t even create it was just ESR closing down the keeper and him making a mistake, absolutely dismal.
My lads who were both born in the nineties and had only known success until recently asked me how bad were we in the mid seventies and I said I used to go and enjoy the match with the knowledge we always had a chance of winning even though we weren’t very good and I can never remember the despair that today’s matches are giving me especially after ten minutes.
I think we will win against Norwich and will probably pick up until the spuds game and so can’t see Mikel being put under any real pressure until Christmas, it could be a long time.
As I write this pool and chelski are drawing meaning if it stays the same a spuds win could see them top with us bottom, Edu and Mikel should be sacked on that alone.

We would have lost anyway, but the ref was completely biased against us today, but being Atkinson, no surprises there

  36. so what was Arteta playing at with that team selection, Chambers getting his first game at CB since his injury two seasons ago, Kolasinac playing CB, when we’ve been in talks to get rid of him, his first league start in 8 months, and out of position, Xhaka at CM on his own, new signing Sambi on the bench, beside CB Mari, another of Arteta’s signigns, and then we had AMN coming on, again a lad we seem to want to flog.

was Arteta being too smart by half, or was he trying to send a message to KSE to bring in 2 or 3 more signings this summer,

Arsenal midfielder Jack Henry-Francis has been called up to the Republic of Ireland U19 squad. He should be a regular for Arsenal U23s too if Azeez’s loan move goes ahead.

  38. our U18’s again today, just like the U23’s in their games so far this season, used a 3-4-2-1 formation, is that the formation Arteta is looking to use with the first team, it does seem odd that the youths are using a different formation to the first team, usually our teams all play the same system, most clubs do this too.

  40. Ed, you are being far too nice Mikel can’t be too clever, he seems to be on just one level.
Aman, remember Chambers and Holding won the world youth cup together but have never had a chance to gel as a partnership together under Unai or Mikel, today was part of a three with a LB were trying to sell as a CB they hadn’t played with and a right back that had been missing in action for half a year. Hardly a place to judge them as a pairing.

  41. Motd gloss over Chambers being punched in the face, yet go in depth how hard done by a Chelsea defender was for getting a red, despite admitting it was following the current laws of the game
Make no mistake, I don’t think it will come to that, but the PGMOL would willingly help relegate this team if they could, watch them give the likes of spurs and Burnley a big helping hand in upcoming games , would even let Norwich push our players into camera pits if there were any at the Emirates

  42. Good morning all..

    Ianspace2014,
I think we’ve seen enough of Holding+Chambers at senior level to know they don’t complement each other’s game well enough. Holding+Mari works better than Holding+Gabriel also. Once all CB options are available, I’m sure our coaching staff will figure out the best combinations.

<64 hours to go..hope we are able to offload Kolasinac, Willian, Eddie, Reiss, Runarsson, and either Hector or Ainsley.
    Still seeking Bissouma..and Aouar.
    RB can wait.

  43. just heard someone say “theres been decades of mess at Arsenal”. oh dear, I think they need to lie down with cup of tea. And then sod off and support someone else.

“…asked me how bad were we in the mid seventies and I said I used to go and enjoy the match with the knowledge we always had a chance of winning even though we weren’t very good and I can never remember the despair that today’s matches are giving me especially after ten minutes.”

That big 70s flirt with relegation was before my time, I think Ian theres only you, Ed and jjgsol who recall that? Could you guys write a bit if you have a chance?
The key point in what you write for me in the quoted section is the despair, and the seemingly lack of any chance to win-Ive not seen this in my time.I also agree about Xhaka, Sure give the torch and garden implement mob everything they wanted: another scapegoat.
I think we can honestly say at this point that the AW transition was a huge steam pile of kack, as if every bastard could put the boot in to destroy it, grab what they wanted from it ( parasitical fame)just for their fake expert amusement.

We seem soulless and stretched, anemic and lost, good players reduced to wandering around like zombies-when they are not.Bad fishhead brains? Who are the head and brrains? AFTV? Bad reffing is just the sadistic icing on the cake of mess.

Perhaps for this one short moment we can say this: it was better in the old days! LOL!

  44. I used to have a cricket captain who would visibly brighten after we had scored our first run, fearing he would be the first to skipper a side bowled out for nothing. I’m feeling a bit like that at the moment: will we ever score a Premier League goal this season, will we be the first to go through all 38 matches without troubling the keeper?

  46. Mills quote

“…asked me how bad were we in the mid seventies and I said I used to go and enjoy the match with the knowledge we always had a chance of winning even though we weren’t very good and I can never remember the despair that today’s matches are giving me especially after ten minutes.”

well whoever said that is looking back with rose tinted glasses, season upon season from 74 to 78 our 60,000 stadium had 40,000 empty spaces cos the fans couldn’t be arsed to watch the dire stuff we put up most of the time. The pitches were dire, the football was dire, we of course had our moments, we had some real stars, the young liam brady, and david o’leary, the wonderful talents of Alan Ball and Alan Hudson, sadly we did not pair them together, this was something we done at that time, we’d bring in a great signing, but it was to replace a great outgoing, not to add to, we’d still have Terry Mancini and his like in the team, we had the big name signing of Super Mac himself, injury meant his career ended early too, we did throw youth player after youth player at it, we did that all the way into the 80’s too, often guys would get one or two games, and be discarded for the next youth to get a go, some got lots of games, and even then we had young careers wrecked by injury, Richie Powling and Alan Matthews were 2 in the 70’s and poor Paul Vassen was the sad one of the 80’s.

I would say that the thing in the bad days of the 70’s was that our double of 71 was still in the memory, but without social media and wall to wall football coverage fans just moved on to the next game more easily, by time your next game came around you were just happy to have Arsenal back, even if you did not expect victory. As a fan here in Ireland I often had to wait till days after a game to actually get the result, it wasn’t till the 80’s that it got a lot easier to get quick updates etc.
