Arteta, Thanks For Nothing.

On today’s podcast me and @shotta_gooner take a look at the Brighton and WBA games, but mainly I go ballistic about the stupidity in the media and our own fanbase. So sorry about that.

Pedantic George.

  2. Arteta discusses the latest on Mesut Ozil
    Rob Kelly 07 Jan 2021

Much of Mikel Arteta’s press conference on Wednesday was dominated by talk of one man: Mesut Ozil.

Our manager was quizzed about the playmaker’s next move, whether he could leave the club this month and more.

    This is what he said:

    on Mesut Ozil’s future…
I don’t know what is going to happen. Obviously now he’s free to negotiate with other clubs. We will discuss internally what the best situation for him is for the near future, obviously with the player and the agent too, and try to find the best solution for everyone.

on whether he would want to play every game if he was in Ozil’s shoes…
I think every player wants to play football. This is why we picked this profession and we are so lucky to be doing what we do. For every player that’s not playing, it’s always hard.

on whether Ozil could still stay…
I’m saying we will decide what’s happening in the next few days.

on young players taking Ozil’s place…
We need every player that is involved in our squad. The fact that the youngsters are involved in the squad means that they have the level to compete with any player in that squad. The young players have moments through the season. It’s really difficult for them to be constantly at the level for 10 months, but sometimes players develop, players have moments and you have to take those moments. If that means that they’re pushing somebody else, I think it’s really healthy competition for the team. The team always gets better when something like that happens so I think it’s really positive news.

on whether it would be good for everyone if a deal for Mesut was done…
If something was sorted this month, it’s because it is good for both parties, it is good for Mesut and his future, and it’s good for the club. If that’s the case, we will move forward, of its not the case the player will stay here.

    on whether Ozil is training…
He has been training with us, but he had some days because we decided to give him some days for something personal, but he has been training with us all the time.

on whether he is aware Ozil is talking to other clubs…
We are aware of all the conversations we have had internally with Mesut and his agent, and this communication keeps going and of course he is free to talk to any club and he is entitled to do this.

on whether Mesut Ozil could be involved on Saturday…
    We’ll decide what we do.

on whether a decision has to be made on Ozil ASAP…
The decision has to be made when you have to reduce the list of players, when you have to play them or not play them all the time. We know that we have a really important player who is one of the key players in the past few seasons for this football club. We have to make a decision, I had to make a decision and I made it. I knew the consequences of it and now we’re going to have to make another one in January, and we will just putting the balance on what is the best thing for the club and the best thing for the team, and what the intentions of the player are, and we will try to find the right solutions for that.

  3. Mikel Arteta has hailed Folarin Balogun’s “incredible” progress as the club remain in talks about extending his contract.

The teenage striker has scored twice since making his first-team debut at the end of October and our manager is keen to keep him.

“His progression and the use of the time that he’s had with us has been incredible. He will keep having chances while he’s with us,” Arteta said.

“You need three parties to make a deal. For sure, the club wants to make a deal, the manager wants to make a deal, the player wants to stay and I’m not sure about the agent.

“No, I’m not saying he’s stopping [the deal]. I’m saying that we need to find an agreement with him. We are negotiating with an agent, with a player that wants to stay at the club and we need to find an agreement.

“I’m telling you that we are doing everything we can to keep him here and hopefully from the other part they are doing the same and they defend the same interests, which is the players’ interest, which is to stay at the football club and be successful with us.”

Arsenal now 92 full time players on their books (including those on loan), many more than in previous years. Wouldn’t be surprised if quite a few youngsters leave this summer.

  9. I see we have borrowed 120 million from the BOE what an absolute financial cock up the last couple of years has been.
After years of Arsene’s financial prudence we now have a situation where we have unregistered players on mega wages sitting doing nothing and other players who are playing simply no earning their wages.
After knowing the situation with Covid our actions have been even more idiotic.
It would hard to imagine how anyone could have done worse even if they had tried.
Thank goodness for the academy it has saved our Arse.

  10. That loan should cover the bogus transfers from recent years that can’t even make the pitch!

FML how is Josh Kronke still in a job/not barred from N5 by a court order?

How do the Billy Big Blaggers spend a decade licking the Kronke’s Arsenal as they hollow out the club from the inside out? Is it because they are shameless idiots who know nothing about the Footy but do know how to get a click? “Ramsey and Ozil can’t play together”? I think we have an answer!

This is a nadir for the modern club and it will take the club a long long time if ever to recover its reputation. For now the Kronke’s have binned a successful model copied by the likes of Leipzig in order to fail at copying Mendez’s model at Sporting Wolverhampton. It’s taken these clowns nearly three years to drive Ozil out the club: no matter what your subjective opinion this has been a comprehensive failure.

  16. Seem to be quite a lot of photos of Balogun from the training today. And even more tweets etc from in the know professional fans that tell me he is the second coming, and that the club’s failure to get him to sign a contract is clear evidence of the demise of everything. Probably Arsene’s fault no doubt.

But does anyone here actually know anything concrete about him?

  19. Not just Benik but Chuba and Jet also Issac Hayden who ended up at Newcastle. All supposed to be future ARSENAL Captains.
As after Brexit English players value will go up then we should be very careful which youngsters we sell. Selling Eddie seems to me at this stage a real mistake considering we won’t know his final progression for a season or two. He reminds me very much of Andy Cole and I know we didn’t have a choice with him because of what he did so why throw away the chance of a possible player of that quality.
I would be quite happy getting rid of Auba and Laca and keeping Ballogon, Eddie and Martinelli especially with ESR behind them.
We are not going to get top six this year so why not start a team for the future.

In days gone by we might of seen some of our best youngsters given a chance in the first team but now seeing as most of them are carrying the the first team are players like Pepe now fringe. Maybe Thursday is far enough away to put out our strongest eleven anyway whoever plays COYG

  21. Was just reminding myself of the last FA cup tie I watched live: Arsenal v Hull in 2015 (I think). Think it was earlier in Jan and I remember a couple of glasses before the game: we made heavy weather of it but were always going to win. Joel Campbell played well (whatever happpend to him?) and a decent Alexis goal from a Santi assist made it safe. But I love these Jan FA cup ties: they start in the darkness of the year, but if you’re lucky (and we have been more than most) they finish with springtime and all the promise of summer. And my goodness, don’t we need a bit of that right now.

  27. Huge number of changes from the team that played well through the holiday season.
I don’t expect the same level of football but I do appreciate the need to give Bellerin & Holding a breather, Xhaka & Saka kept on the bench if required.

In contrast to his hugely disappointing comments in the absence of ESR it looks like Arteta has tried to keep up the attacking numbers and has asked Willock to play as an 8 a role he hasn’t been asked to play in the league that often. Opposite Hayden in the midfield contest? Nelson returning from injury means there’s no avoiding Willian today.
