Arsenal: Are you ready Positives ?

With our season about to start later this week I’m sure that many remember moaning and groaning about some of our starts to previous seasons. Perhaps it would be fun to contemplate our navels for a moment and reflect that back before the war, Manchester City won the championship and were relegated the following season!

I mean how about this as a start to the season from the champions?

P10 W1 D2 L7 including no less than a 7-1 whipping at Sunderland.

Whoops! You thought I was referring to Man City? Ah sorry, slip of the two fingers. It was us actually in 1953/4.

Oh as a new boy at a school with distinct scum leanings, it was painful. In those days, our first win of the season, in about our 8th game, Chelsea away 2-0, meant so little! I mean a blind man and his dog expected to beat Chelsea.

Bad starts are not uncommon …we’ve had at least 6 with no more than 2 wins out of the first 10 games…. but which is the only club to have gone nearly 100 successive years in the top flight? Everton believe it or not come closest to the Gooners….63 odd years and after them, our nearest rivals will be……??

That’s your Quiz question.

And then there’s just straight old losing and /or not scoring. How about 7 straight losses in 1976/7? Even in our real hey days, in 1998/9, we had a wonderful early season spell with 3 goals in 5 games and that was the year after the double.   Better still, 1 goal in about 8 successive games (It really is too painful to track that season back so forgive me) in one glorious Jan/Feb spell when we had been 1st or 2nd for most of the season and banging it in like sailors on shore leave.

So goal starvation is also not something that is uncommon to the faithful.

  1. did not read the article but surely it included how long since spurs won a trophy, or at the very least how long since the won the league. no you say, odd that, its almost as if AFC are treated differently

  2. Fortunately there some sane football hacks who actually talk about the football! Sounds impossible I know, but I’ve seen and heard it!

Adrian Clarke’s Breakdown of the FA Challenge Cup Final victory over the evil enemy is a great way to start your pre-season and build up those fitness levels for the long season ahead (Tony Gale? You must be joking, mute or switch channels etc.).

  4. Big. Money. Flops.

Now there’s a strange and unfamiliar concept.
But now that you mention it I was wondering what happened to Deepay and so many others. Deepay cost about the same as Sanchez….

…I suppose if we used a scratched and mutated prism then Mendez Raiola Mourinho and all their hungry blagging and hacking hangers on can be seen as a kind of charity. Perhaps kind and charity are the wrong words to use, but I can’t be Arsenaled to think or type any more about such blatant charlatans.

  6. The previous visit of the Arsenal to Australia, had a touch of melodrama about it!

According to Jim Spurling and his book – Rebels for the Cause.

Malcolm MacDonald, Alan Hudson and George Armstrong, all fell out with Terry Neill, the then Arsenal Manager.

Somewhat worse for the amount of “bevvy” consumed. it seemed that the 3 of them, wanted a job done on Neill. The new acquaintances, to whom the 3 amigos had vented their displeasure to, offered the immediate “disappearance” and “departure” of Mr T Neill from Australia.

MacDonald and Hudson were banished back home, George Armstrong would have been too drastic.

  7. reports in Brazil suggest Arsenal are resigning Wellington Silva from Fluminense, for a set fee that was agreed when AFC sold the forward to them last year.
It seems AFC are signing him so we can sell him for a profit to a French club.

Arsenal in full control, early goal from Per. Nelson the standout player, Bramall and Willock also done well, Danny and Theo a little off, otherwise we would have scored a few more by now.

  28. No need for too much analysis, to be candid, but I loved it – and the youngsters stole the show for me.

The major changes with just 20 mins to go were disruptive and only made to get players fit – but it was worth it to see La Caz score a simple but well taken goal. More, please.

  29. Playing in front of 80,000 fans and sharing a pitch with a global superstar like Mesut Ozil, it would be easy for a 17-year-old to be overawed by the situation.

But there was no trace of nerves in Reiss Nelson’s performance against Sydney FC, and his confident showing certainly caught the eye of his manager.

“Since I’ve been in the game I’ve understood that you either have that [confidence] at 17 years of age or you don’t,” Arsene Wenger said.

“Some of the players I’ve had in my career have turned 18 years old and it seems natural for them to be on the pitch. They just think, ‘Let’s play’ and Reiss behaves like that.

“They all did well today, Reiss Nelson, Joe Willock as well had a very strong performance. They are young, just 17 or 18 years old, so that is very promising.

“Pre-season is there for that, for me to understand how close they are. It’s the first game, it’s a bit early. What they’ve shown tonight means they have the chance of being very, very close.”

  34. Chambo’s bleedin’ agent/parasite must be hoarse from screaming “show me my money”

You can smell the desperation. If Chambo resigns his agent’ll be crying.

In spite of what the friends (on commission) of Chambo’s agent regurgitate through their orifices, holding onto the gifted young English footballer who hadn’t had as bad setbacks as poor JW is far far far more important for the club then resigning Alexis.

The mind boggles as to why the blaggers have shat (pardon me but it’s hard not to exclaim when confronted by such excrement) out such a narrative these past twelve months. But then Chambo’s agent is not the only desperate hungry bloodsucker out there.
