Wenger 2 – WOBs 0
Despite their total and ignominious defeat earlier this week, the WOBs remain unrepentant and as bitter as ever. It has been my observation these past many years that most of these anti-Wenger zealots, (bloggers, podcasters, tweeters and self-appointed tv personalities) are so invested in their anti-Wenger narrative they have become increasingly unhinged, removed from reality.
Take Blogger X, for example. Prior to the FA cup final he wrote a long, sonorous piece culminating in this Eureka moment:
“Arsenal’s problem is not money. Arsenal’s problem isn’t that Stan Kroenke doesn’t go to games or that he pays himself some token salary. Arsenal’s problem is Arsene Wenger.”
Not satisfied he had dug himself into a mammoth hole as well as receiving commendable pushback from some of the posters in the comments section, Blogger-X ranted and raged and propounded with all seriousness that Arsenal:
“…can, absolutely, unequivocally, spend the money that Man U spend. We spent £100m this season. We spent £20m on Perez, £20m on Chambers, £40m on fucking Mustafi. We could have bought Zlatan. Easily. We just needed to pay his agent. Which we refuse to do. We could have bought Pogba.”
Isn’t this the very definition of madness? Can any sane person seriously propose that Arsenal should go into a bidding war with the commercially most successful team in Europe, bar Real Madrid? Can any serious Arsenal blogger propose paying £100m for an over-the-hill forward at the expense of curing deficiencies in defense, midfield and attack. Isn’t this the kind of wasteful pandering to the agents of big name players like Zlatan and Pogba that had the once fearsome attacking force from Old Trafford earn the reputation of Drawchester United, stumbling into 6th place after expending £200m in transfers? Is it any wonder that this blogger entered the FA Cup final fully expecting Arsenal to be destroyed by Chelsea and sheepishly admitting how surprised he was at the result?
Yet this is a blogger, like so many, who are now fuming and cursing that Stan Kroenke, ignored their insane, unsolicited advice and himself decided that Arsene Wenger had his full and complete confidence, sanctioning his retention as manager of the football club for at least two more years. This is the key quote from his press release:
“Arsene is the best person to help us make that happen. He has a fantastic track record and has our full backing.”
Apparently Stan has a far greater grip on reality than these self-appointed football experts who claim to be spokespersons for rank and file supporters of Arsenal Football Club. These are the idiots whom the mainstream media love to quote as examples of the so-called increasing number of Arsenal supporters who are opposed to Arsene continuing as manager of the club.
Btw, note the negative feedback loop created by the mainstream media: (1st) They initiate fake news and analysis disparaging the manager who kept Arsenal in the top-4 for 11 tough years when the club had to pay for a new stadium. (2nd) A minority of weak-minded, weak-willed bloggers increasingly fall for their bogus reporting and over time, week-in, week-out, faithfully repeat the same talking points as the BBC, Sky, Telegraph, Guardian, Mirror etc. (3rd) A small minority of Arsenal fans are eventually emboldened by the continued, unrelenting anti-Wenger screeds of these bloggers and begin protesting with A-4 paper, bedsheets and even aeroplanes. (4th) The media then reports and highlights these protestors as somehow representing the majority opinion of Arsenal. Problem for the lamestream media is; you can fool some people sometime but you can’t fool all the people all the time. The absolute refusal of Stan Kroenke to be moved by either the media or the malcontents within Arsenal is proof positive.
Wenger is the Most Successful Manager in the Premier League
What the mainstream media and Arsenal bloggers rarely emphasize is how monumentally successful Arsene has been in the 21 years he has managed Arsenal Football Club. During his tenure, despite not having the mammoth financial resources of first Manchester United and later on Manchester City and Chelsea, he has led the club to earn the 2nd highest number of points among all the traditional top-5 PL clubs.
| Clubs | W | D | L | Points | Avg Pos |
| Man United | 502 | 169 | 127 | 1675 | 2 |
| Arsenal | 462 | 196 | 140 | 1582 | 3 |
| Chelsea | 443 | 188 | 167 | 1517 | 4 |
| Liverpool | 419 | 201 | 178 | 1228 | 4 |
| Tottenham | 345 | 194 | 259 | 1229 | 8 |
Note this table excludes Manchester City, who, before they hit the jackpot in 2006, were outside the Premier League for extended periods. They are now the very definition of a club who lucked out on a very rich sugar-daddy and can now outspend all their rivals. Another observation; despite all the song and dance about Tottenham’s recent successes, they are the worst performing of Arsenal’s top competitors during Wenger’s 21 years, averaging 8th position. Forced with having to pay for a new stadium, sooner or later they will have to cash-in on their best assets to pay the bills. History proves it is unlikely they can sustain their recent competitiveness.
Wenger is The Most Efficient
Arsene has not only been successful in winning games but he has been one of the most efficient, i.e. achieving more points from every pound/dollar spent on players. Isn’t that the very definition of a successful manager in every walk of life; the ability to get superior results from the resources available? Why should football be any different?
The following table focuses on 11 years since the move to the Emirates Stadium. (All currency is in millions.)
| W | D | L | Points | Avg Pos | Net Spend | Spend per Pt | |
| Man City | 224 | 89 | 105 | 761 | 5 | £869.03 | £1.14 |
| Man Utd | 265 | 83 | 70 | 878 | 3 | £481.09 | £0.55 |
| Chelsea | 259 | 88 | 71 | 865 | 2 | £329.31 | £0.38 |
| Liverpool | 224 | 104 | 90 | 776 | 5 | £252.23 | £0.33 |
| Arsenal | 236 | 102 | 80 | 810 | 4 | £170.15 | £0.21 |
| Tottenham | 205 | 104 | 109 | 719 | 5 | £132.78 | £0.18 |
Arsene has earned a point from every £210,000 spent on transfers achieving an average 4th position in the league.
While Tottenham had a lesser average transfer spend of £180,000 for each point, they averaged a lower league position than Arsenal, meaning outside the top-4 and lucrative champions league spot.
All the other top four clubs spent on a net basis significantly more than Arsenal:
- Liverpool has spent 50% more to average 5th place in the League.
- Chelsea spent double.
- United triple.
- City quadruple.
Despite their massive net spend City still averages 5th position over 11 years. One must admit that prior to Sheik Mansour they were a team languishing in the lower reaches of the League so they have a significant deficit to cover.
But the above data gives lie to the non-factual nonsense spouted by Blogger X who demonstrated he had absolutely no clue about transfer spending. It is not how much you spend it is how efficient and effective is your spending. Any smart, rational owner seeing how effective Arsene Wenger has been would do everything to retain his services. Why should Stan entrust the club’s resources to some unproven manager who simply wants a big checkbook to compete with City, United and Chelsea; all of whom have bigger checkbooks?
Yet we have bloggers doubting that Stan is smart. Apparently they skipped that part of his biography that he became a billionaire before marrying into the Walton family. That he has a Bachelors of Arts, Bachelors of Science and Masters in Business Administration and massively grew the family business. According to Blogger Y, who is also well known:
“Enos is clueless on football. He doesn’t have a plan, abdicating responsibility to a powerless board. They lacked the stomach for a fight they knew they would lose and their capitulation to the manager is the result.”
Apparently Lord Sugar, former owner of Spurs is also clueless because he is constantly praising Arsene and ridiculing that absolute idiot Piers Morgan who is totally unhinged when it comes to Wenger.
Is the battle over?
Despite the massive loss suffered by the WOBs, many of them are still digging deeper into that hole dug by Blogger X. But I have observed that the least unhinged are trying to walk back some of their initial over-the-top reactions. For example, big, bad Blogger Z initially wrote:
This current board have been a shambles over the last few months in particular. They’ve shown themselves to be utterly craven and you have to question whether some put their own self-interest ahead of the club.
Two days or so later he described himself as somewhere in the middle. The fact that he could make such a slanderous, demeaning description of the Board of Directors did not restrain him from writing a long meandering blog making suggestions and giving advice to the very board. What Chutzpah!
As most of my readers know, I am not very optimistic when it comes to arresting the emotionalism and stupidity generated by the media and many bloggers because in the final analysis it is very profitable. It generates clicks and eyeballs. Google’s Adsense is making money for someone. Furthermore it is my experience that anybody online who makes a career of trashing Arsene Wenger is guaranteed notoriety.
That is why I try to arm sensible fans with the facts showing that Arsene Wenger is simply an amazing manager. Based on the unbiased data I had absolutely no doubt he would be reappointed. He is simply the best man for the job.
Victoria, Concordia, Crescit!
Great stuff.

If Arsene still had the desire and mental fortitude to continue and the board still had confidence in him then of course he should continue. The problem is that football itself is ultimately always unsatisfying in that every triumph is immediately redundant and the next triumph will always appear to be dependent on ‘something’ changing. That change is most often the manager and the longer he remains in place the greater the demand for change even though that change isn’t supported by a consistent record of achievement. But doom mongering bloggers owe much of their existence to Arsene’s longevity.

I note that all of a sudden Arsene has to guarantee a premier league title because his contract was extended. This from Thierry turncoat. No pressure then.

I agree with that. I can accept in the moment emotions, but there are some which i have read who have lost, somewhere along the way, their joy of the game. Its become political, i think. I personally am in the middle. I have been known to have a rant at the telly at team selection etc but i strongly disagree with some of the fowl things i have heard. Anyway im alredy lookking forward to next season the same as i always have

forget about GazCorp, sovereign oil wealth funds or even smaller goldfish like Bernie Tapie!
Some possible explanations for these lies:
– they are liars?
– it’s a religious belief? An article of faith? “Peonage or death. If I’m not a slave I’m nothing?”
– accidental lobomies from violent regurgitations literally shitting out your brains following too much consumption of gr*t and junk? Essentially this is dear Hunter’s analysis, petty jingoism gone mad. Full blown Vengitis for these brave and gallant, these steadfast and uprighteous Wexiteers.

“…can, absolutely, unequivocally, spend the money that Man U spend.’
Crazy!
They earned 150 mill more than us in last year of data(15/16). Figure will be similar for the year after, and one after that. Hopefully we can narrow the gap over the years ahead, but claiming we can spend like them when we so obviously can’t is desperate stuff. The figures will change, but that is nearly half a billion extra money in three years!
I don’t like it at all that they earn so much, makes it almost inevitable they’ll be very strong again soon and ensures that, like City and Chelsea, mistakes in the transfer market don’t incur the traditional mid-term damage and pain they used to. But it’s simple reality.
If pressed, I expect he’d pull the old switcheroo and start talking about Kroenke and Usmanov’s wealth. Which of course he could have talked about in the first place if that was his issue. Press successfully there and it’s onto Leicester and Spurs.
Wenger haters will almost always conflate the two.
That’s the real sleight of hand : at some point, even if they admit elsewhere to the financial realities (like Lineker did the other day), the final judgement is made as though that stuff (150 mill extra!) isn’t too important, or isn’t what it is.

gf60: As usual your feedback keeps me motivated. Comments, they say, is the lifeblood of blogging. Unlike our mentally unhinged cohorts, we at PA prefer healthy blood not the poisoned, diseased, septic fluid that comes from many so-called mainstream blogs. We have a policy of not attacking bloggers personally but we vigorously challenge their insane, baseless opinions. But all three bloggers quoted are well known to many of us. In my little niche at PA I emphasize the “unbiased’ data which expose them as blatant liars and frauds. As is obvious from my twitter profile, it is a contrarian point of view that doesn’t earn immediate popularity.

One thing that seems to be now lodged in many bloggers minds, is that Arsenal (or more like AW) will make a mess out of the transfer market because we arent going to spend 500 million + on players who many bloggers think would be suitable. How many of these bloggers new Santi before he came? They might be more informed than they used to be, but so what?
However, if AW had left, why would the new manager have less of a difficult time selected new players to fit into a team? Still going to be the same kitty, still the same problems in getting players to come. You really think Pogba had a great season? Lets not forget that ManUre were worse than us, yet their entry into the CL makes them a success. Really? All that cash for the League Cup and a European trophy that is snobbed out all the time(except when José wins it)??? How strange that Chelseas truly mediocre season was forgotten so soon! Did they get it rammed down their necks each game by pundits and commentators?
A new manager wouldnt suddenly have the key to the hearts of every player they want. Thats the fantasy of bloggers and their lust for personal authority and absolutism.
Cheers Shotts! Good one as usual!

I would commend anyone to read Soccernomics and Moneyball. Those two treatise pretty much determine how football clubs are run these days – particularly by reasoned owners like Kroenke.
And if you haven’t got time to read them – just stick with this blog – it’ll tell you just about all you need to know,

A fascinating comment given the history of Lady Nina’s nag, of Caped Crusader David Dein. No need to mention the writer’s Expert pals on YouTube or other orifices too. What a blinkingly weird comment!
And what are we to make of these earnest and diligent commentators complete avoidance of Fizman’s expertise? And the conditions of his Handover to the current ‘owner’ (majority la di da)? Oh strange is this avoidance?
What is the driver for this purititanical zeal with which the experts avoid the topic? Faith in their own peonage? Narcism? Dysphoria? Madness?

BREAKING NEWS: some player or other has been linked to Arsenal. But this player wont be coming as Arsenal have no interest, and never did and its actually early summer fiction from the hacks. Shock !! We didnt know that did we?
However, the Wob believe the press, and now theyve heard the breaking news, will promptly accuse AW of not knowing the market, of dithering, of being tight, of whatever they wont and, of course, having a poor summer transfer and he hasnt a clue.
I wonder if they do?
Do they realise that this isnt monopoly money?Do they know how utterly complex the clauses are in a contract? No its Supermarket sweep! Do they think José would be as good on such strict budgets ? Pep? Conte?

Seen on twitter “3 FAC’s in 4 years doesnt paper over the cracks”.
What cracks? Jimmy Corkhills dog? Their arse cracks? What about Liverpool, when was the last time they won the EPL? And Spurs? Top league winners arent they?
Erm league stats on the last few seasons for ManUre please…if we are mediocre, then they are worse than mediocre. 7th 4th 5th 6th. Cracks? Crack of doom? Outside of the SAF years take a look at their stats. Bit cracky to me.
How many league titles did Brady win? Stapleton? Sunderland? Ah yes, but as Comrade Citizen Eggbread said last night, that was them old days eh? How grateful we were for all those four cup finals though? In those days every cup meant something. i cant help feeling we’ve lost something in our world of potty turbo capitalism.
Funny isnt it, all this fighting is about not having the pseudo feeling/orgasm of being the best Thats all. Are people so scared of being a loser? What about when you die, have you lost then?
What about when you pop your cherry, losssssssssssssssseeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!! ?
Its all bs, there arent any losers, how can there be? Only in peoples minds.
Ok so how long are you on top for a few months? King Kong! Queen Kong! Bong! Then what: erm, all weighed all paid and off we go again?
Spare a thought for Arsène, the amount of crap that bloke has to soak up, from people who cant kick a ball or manage this club.Or any.Ever. Or dont even know him. Yet they seem to think that they have a democratic right to call him whatever sexual swear words they like. Yet I notice if anyone says anything to the peoples pundits then they are terribly offended.
“I want my domination, and I want it now!! Or I’ll scweam and scweam and scweam until Im sthick”, “I will not be humiliated!”. “I want the Invincibles back!” What for their CL domination?
gf60: have you ever thought about writing some pieces and submitting them eher about your experiences at Arsenal? Sure would be interesting for some of us.

Thats pretty exasperating brother Shotts. WH Auden is quoted as having said ” one finally becomes adult when one realises telling the truth no longer does any good”.
Seems that plenty of the old and new media seem to be adult. Im trapped in adolescent thought! But maybe they think they tell the truth. Pravda?
Not sure I can go through a whole summer of the Magalufer mind mentality ranting on about dithering Wenger. Wheres the evidence of any dithering? Of course they would be Johnny on the spot! Action man! With (sm)Eagle eyes and a fist full of dollars and a rocket in their pocket!
What can we do this summer to blot that crap out? Not look at it Mills you div thats what! Too true of course!
You wouldnt believe we just a week ago had one of the truly great Arsenal moments.

another thing shotta on Griezeman is that a week ago he was all set for man utd, he said it was a 6/10 chance at least, but a week on and he has decided to stay at atletico, but have the media reported it as “utd snubbed”, or even “utd miss out due to dithering”, have the fuck, no the oh so unbiased media report it as “utd cool their interest in Griezeman” as they assess other targets. Come on, we have seen worse slamming of Arsenal’s bid for Mbappe and it only 24 hours.

Giroud is now 1 goal behind Benzema, who has played 19 times more for France
By the way, ollie is now only 5 goals behind Zidane, and 8 behind Trezeguet

Ed, A.I.S.A do not just have a go at the club all the time. They have an open line of communication with the club and have always steered the club in a positive manner so no need for protest etc like AST. Tony Attwood from Untold is one of the board and is oviously a major Arsene supporter. While their maybe some members who are anti Arsene the group as a whole are a supporters group pressing issues around ticketing, Pricing, Traveling, catering ETC. The £10 for teens was one of their ideas and because they talk to the club rather than raming it down their throats the club are receptive.

many reports that Szczesny and Ospina are close to being sold, not overly surprised, even if I think we would be wrong to sell Szczesny, but what really is odd, and not for the first time, we seem to be selling very much on the cheap side. Talk of no more than £13M for Szczensy and only £3M for Ospina. Szczesny has just won the golden gloves in Italy, something he has won in England too, that sort of fee is a give away.
Look at the price Sunderland are seeking for Pickford, someone who for me is not near Szczesny’s level.
Hopefully Szczesny is not sold, but is in fact made our first choice keeper again

The cat calls from the experts regarding Giroud is genuinely amusing.
The simplest summary is to highlight how difficult it’s been for city to win a league with only Aguero and no pre-injury Negredo or younger Dzeko to come on and change the shape of a team/match.
Yes. We are blessed with such expertise. Wow what can you say? Nothing to do with the football. Just simple projections of gibberish.

Did Pellegrini become a less able manager after his commission* hungry DoF left him with just Aguero and the Nigerian rookie as his only CFs?
Perhaps Aguero just isn’t good enough?
Which could it be? The mind boggles…
–
This season Diego Costa had Diplomatic Immunity which always helps the cause, it’s not unheard of regarding petrocorp mercenaries (just ask our former Home Secretry & current PM!), and also double figures for three forwards plus the £30M CF in reserve gave them equivalent cover to City’s title winning forward lines.
Not starting the William against Arsenal was huge error from the GazCorp coach. One that has been studiously ignored by the Expert AFC blaggers on their reams of reviews and ear splitting expertise Pedro is a good footballer but like Navas his numbers are just too low – this season Willian scored about the same with much less game time. And some of you will remember how I described Willian as the lesser of two from Donetsk when compared with D.Costa (which to be fair to myself is kind of obvious…
…which leads us neatly to Wally. If he can retain his grip like the BFG when only starting in spells only a complete dunderhead or lunatic would want to see off a HG player with 19 goals who is not a nailed on starter (but cover for injuries etc). The HG part is just a little bit significant.
