Good morning Positive Arsenal fans,
Another savage setback in Sandwell yesterday. 2017 has turned into a bit of a monster hasn’t it ? In 29th January, having seen our second string thrash Saints in the Cup and with a safe three points against Watford scheduled, before our trip to take on Chelsea the season’s future looked rather different. Only seven weeks ago ….? Just 11 games – Seems a bloody age !
Of yesterday’s lunchtime match until James McLean crunched into Alexis’ ankle we were comfortably in the game. We were not fluent going forward but doing enough to score again and, in due course, probably could/would/should have collected the points. The Chilean had looked sparky, had scored and was leading the Baggies a merry dance. With our balloon popped, or apparently Sanchez’s ankle ligaments crocked to be more accurate, we seemed to retreat into a protective ball, a little shocked, a little hurt.
And after that we lost the game. West Brom are not a bad side, a team built by Pulis in his functional “no-nonsense” image. Like Watford, like Everton, however they are a team of footballers who individually do not have the quality of our players, do not have the wide experience of domestic club, European and international football, do not have the technique in passing and control, are in most cases slower. These are the artisans of the football world. But yet again they put together what talent and energy they had and earned their points. They defended with grim determination and their concentration did not waver. When three chances to score came their way they took them. Two well taken corners, BANG BANG. One scruffy half shank of a scramble on the penalty spot from Robson-Kanu.
For our side we have a hell of a lot of passes and 77% possession. Once we had slipped behind to the second goal we really did not look like we were likely to recover. The eyes glazed, the shoulders slumped. What was slightly disappointing is no one kicked McLean (or stamp on his head as is the current fashion) after what was a vicious tackle on Sanchez. Why are we soooooo “nice” ? We have very good players. And those same players until the end of January had it in them, and managed week after week, to win games in the final few minutes, and to take back the initiative in contests. For the past seven weeks that talent has deserted them.
On the one side we have WBA whose output, whose product, is greater than one could expect if one piled up the components. On the other is us, whose output is falling well below that which the constituent parts ‘should’ yield.
Right that is the hair-shirt bit done.
We thankfully have the international break during which, I hope, the manager and the players can come together and identify what technical failings we have, defensively and offensively, and address them. We still have at least 12 games to go this season.
Despite the hysteria following yesterday’s defeat there remains an FA Cup to play for and crucial games against Citeh X2m, ManYoo and Spuds to be fiercely contested. And we have good player who can and will contest them as is their very lives depended on it. The points in the PL games can still provide a top four or top three finish, and that is still worth having despite what the ingrates will tell you. The results of those forthcoming games will be even more important than the previous 11 games since January. It is time for everyone in the club and who supports arsenal to put their shoulder to the wheel. In eight weeks time the season may look very different.
And I know no-one on here is foolish enough to take me at my word of a person’s life depending on the result of a football match allow me to share a family anniversary with you. 100 years today the 23 year old Lance Corporal John Nicol 9th battalion of the Seaforth Highlanders was killed at Arras.

I am off to breakfast. Enjoy your Sunday.
The old fart’s thoughts.
Fortunately I read Steww’s comment on language that was inappropriate so managed to change a bit.
Last night, I wrote in anger. This morning realization that my thoughts may be seen by those of nervous disposition, or PG or by youngsters who should not be reading such language. Therefore I replaced offensive words with xxxs.
XXXXX xxxx XXXXx Cech xxxxxxx xxxxx XXXXXxxxx O-1 Alexis from Xhaka 1-1. 77% possession..xxxxx xxxx xxxxxxxx xxxxx xxxxxx xxx xxxxx1-2 XXXXXX!! XXXX XXXXXX XXXXX1-3 Fuck.
Never having managed a side myself, perhaps comments on our side are out of line, but two things have puzzled me for much of the season. Why do we spend so much time on backward or square passing following an attack that has just broken down? All too often it seems that, at corners especially, we then faff around frequently finishing up with our keeper who belts the ball upfield. By this time the opposition has had time to restructure defence, our big guys are back in position and we give away attacking possession.
Equally these days, a perceived bad decision against us, results in the morale of the team going into ‘don’t give a toss’ mode. WB’s 2nd goal being a classic example. Pity they haven’t learned the rules…the goal was correctly allowed. When we already have Wally sulking over his non-birthday present and the Ox making his case for him, it really is painful. Especially when some naughties are being perpetrated on our players, Alexis in particular, and going unpunished. If there is ref bias against us (and it certainly seems that way) then try a bloody sight harder.
Thanks be that there no game this coming week.
I’ll still keep the faith but Oh Lawd, it does sometimes prove difficult.

gf60 you, and everyone else are free to use any language you like in the comments section,
“Its the perfect storm. We are in deep shit. But fear not, PA will be here tomorrow and next season. We support a great club,we take the rough with the smooth.
Arsene has set the table and we will feast for years to come.”
That was my comment from last night, I stand by it this morning.Sadly, I think we will be feasting without Arsene at the top of the table carving the joints.

sorry to say it but yesterday and of late our lot remind me of how the chelsea players failed to turn up for jose last season, or how our players failed to turn up for GG in 95. The all talk a good talk, in fact they seem only too willing to talk off the pitch.
8 Arsenal players in our six yard box yet wba get free header goal x 2. No attempt to block runs, no attempt to challenge for the ball. Oxlade-Chamberlain talked about how wenger and his coaches had pre-warned them what WBA would do, exactly how they would play, counter attacks and set plays, in fact he said they were told Dawson was the biggest danger at set plays, but our players done what they did during the tactics briefing, they watched on, they have stopped listening.

We should be retaliating against the way our players are being targeted on the pitch, and at boardroom level. Problem is, if we do anything on the pitch, the cards come out instantly.
We have players in our ranks who are far from shrinking violets, but it seems they are under orders not to mix it, presumably this comes from the manager. But, personally, I would like to see these players ….well…..a bit more streetwise…and defending each other…..maybe they have just been worn down.
A lot of blame being dished out, but to this observer, this is just one of those junctures where fate kicks you in the balls every time you get up u too some form of inevitablity is bowed to. But trying to analyse Wengers words, I am not convinced he is actually calling it a day, head says he will, heart says maybe not …though if he does not, surely he will have to change more than a man like himself may want to change, possibly methods and even staff. I don’t believe those players are rebelling against him through not liking or rating him, but something is not getting through, by whatever means, that needs to change and quickly. They are currently a shadow of the sum of their parts.
But thanks for taking time to write on a difficult weekend for the club, and a poignant day for the Nicol family.

well said gf60.
it fucks me right off that we so often keep possession for possessions sake, seeing us go from the edge of an opponents area all the way back to our keeper with sideways and backways passes, only then to see the keeper hoof it downfield where we lose the header is just so maddening. Too many of our players lack the moral courage to try and make something happen, its all, no you have it, you mark that runner, you challenge for that corner, you take a shot, and then when things go awry, throw out their arms, shrug their shoulder, and blame someone else. No, no no, it was not my fault, I was back in my six yard box, or I ran 50 yards back to hide in the crowd, so don’t ask me to actually put in a challenge.
Walcott did sweet fa yesterday, but he did put in one outstanding ball low and hard across their six yard box, only thing was not one of our players had bothered their arse to get in there for a simple tap in, welbeck being the only one even in the area, rambo and alexis both were on edge of the area, the rest waiting further out for the ball to be recycled back out so it could be sent back via our defenders to our keeper.
Currently we have major uncertainty over our manager’s future, our two biggest name stars too, and even a few other first team/squad players, alexis, ozil, ox, gibbs, wilshere and others will have one year left on their contracts this summer, and not a sign of any of them signing on, we have rumblings about others not being happy, ospina and lucas two of the main ones, and you know what is the most annoying thing about all these and their contracts, few if any of them are doing anything to show that they deserve the big money they want, the automatic starting place they demand. Jeez, Hector started the season on fire, signed a new five year contract, grew his hair and been awful since.

a simple theory as to why we are so bad at defending set plays
how can you practice defending good set plays when our attempt at corners and freekicks are so woeful, by the time we put a good ball in the timed training session is over, also our attackers don’t attack the ball like Dawson did yesterday, so our defenders can’t practice defending that either.

I would not obsess about defending corners – earlier in the season we were defending corners, defending almost everything well. Same players, largely the same opponents using the same tactics – very different result.
A light has gone off.

Mandy I really don’t know why we so meekly accept the kickings we get on an almost weekly basis. Our players fully adhere to the FA rules on not crowding the ref, on respecting the ref, etc. Our players also never take retribution on an opponent who does one of our players, where is the team bond, where is the looking after and standing up for you team mate, I played both soccer and gaelic football, and they one thing you appreciated more than anything else was when team mates had your back.

I think Per should have played yesterday.
His height would have helped us on the set pieces.
After checs injury he should have been on the pitch.
I think AW got it wrong there.

Mandy I would also add that seeing as the players on the pitch are either unwilling or as seems more likely are under instruction not to kick up a fuss, or kick up an opponent, then it is up to Wenger and Gazidis and our media team to highlight what is happening, show how our players are being treated differently, how the fa are not enforcing their rules over respect for refs, etc,
we have our own stats company, I’m sure they have the stats on every game, every tackle, every incident. use the fucking data, or give it to shotta and let him use it.

Maybe the players know internally AW is leaving at the end of the season.

rosicky for me if the players have stopped cos they think the manager is leaving, then shame on them, is that how little they respect or care for the man, is that how little professionalism they have in themselves,. If it is, then they don’t deserve to play for Arsenal, they don’t deserve the massive wages they get paid, they don’t deserve an ounce of respect. They are a disgrace if that is their attitude.
should they not be upping their game for two big reasons, one to give Wenger the send off he deserves, and secondly should they not be trying to impress who ever our next manager will be or other clubs who might want to sign them.

Agree Ed, they should be highlighting these things, I am sure others would.
But it seems Arsenal are not about rocking boats. If we miss out on the top four, wonder if that may change.
But it seems our players are under clear instructions not to get involved, even Sutton used this to some sort of advantage.
When the new man one day arrives, I hope he changes things on this front, if there is bias or agendas against the club or manager, we make it very easy for them

Fully agree but i think in today’s world no one cares. Everyone is self centred. These players play for them selves not for the manager.
Its such a pity.
Look at how Chelsea players got rid of jose.
Its such a bad scenario
If this is the case with our players i think AW should get rid of those playerz and pick the juniors to play from the next match.
No player should be allowed to fool the club and the fans.

no fire in their bellies
why
as I said Rosicky, that is the million dollar question, maybe the media are correct, and our players just are not that kind of people, maybe they are too pampered, too comfortable, maybe its Wenger’s fault, no hairdryer treatment from him, no dropping their sorry arses. Take yesterday for example, after the game in his presser, a game where the team clearly let him down, what does Wenger do when that very question is put to him, he as usual exonerated the players.
The ox admitted that the players had not done what they were told to do, and of course “we must learn from our mistakes”, seeing our players after game interviews after a poor result, its like the learned off Catholic schoolboys confession script, used for a life time “I disobeyed my mother and father, I told two lies, I etc etc etc” even long after their parents are dead and gone.
As I said earlier, our players love to talk, off the pitch, but going by their words, they are in the remedial class, as it seems they seldom learn.

yes rosicky, i stated earlier that currently our players are performing like the chelsea players did for jose last season, and how our players preformed for graham in 95.
can’t remember which ex arsenal pundit said it yesterday
“performances like that get managers sacked”
and that is the key, players don’t get sacked, they might get sold, but they don’t get sacked, every last one of our players yesterday would have lots of clubs willing to pay them big wages if AFC decided to offload them, and they know it. Sadly the wages have gotten so large that players no longer have to work for a living, and all the power is with the players.
Wenger craved squad stability, but it seems this stability has give rise to player complacency
I hold the view that there are only a couple of ways to shake things up
change the manger
change coaching staff
change lots of players
a combination of all above.
Arsenal have not changed manager in 21 years
Arsenal have rarely changed coaching staff in last 21 years, and its been inside promotion when done
Arsenal rarely sign lots of players in any one window, yes over the course of four or five years there are lots of ins and outs, but when did we last sign 3 new first 11 players in a single window.

rosicky yes we finished runner up last season, but we also had lots of awful performances, and we did finish 10 pts off top, and we went out of the fa cup lamely at home to watford. Our record in the big games is awful, and has been for years, the fight in the bellies has been lacking many times.
yes of course we have our good spells, they are all very highly talented players, no where do I say differently, and when in full flight they can be a joy to behold, but they do not seem to possess a siege mentality when things are going wrong, and that is the problem.
we are on our worst run of form in all of wengers 21 years here, but this squad is by no stretch of the imagination anywhere close to being our weakest or least talented squad, so why are they so under performing.
yesterdays squad had only two first choice players unavailable, Santi Cazorla, and Mesut Ozil so no matter how good wee santi and mesut are, and they are outstanding players, there is no excuse for the level of performance we are seeing from the rest of them. A team and bench full of senior internationals, all with winners medals, and they managed 2 shots on target the entire game.
We got to a CL final with Senderous at CB and Flamini at LB, setting a clean sheet record on the way, we made top 4 with Denilson and Song as our midfield base, we made top 4 with Bendtner and Chamakh in attack, so forgive me if I lay the blame for our current run of bad form firmly at the feet of our players.

There is no safe haven today, not even here, although Andy did give it a good try. Not surprised, really. And now it’s the international break…a no-win, as any player that plays well there is really going to get hammered. After that, it’s City, so I don’t expect it to get better anytime soon. Time for me to find some good books to read.

I am fairly pissed off with yesterday’s game.
We were actually very neat and tidy, lots of passing and possession, but fuck all execution.
Pulis out tacticed Wenger, two very very good set piece corners. Excellent balls in, something we cannot defend as we can’t do that ourselves.
Except when Danny had the exact same chance, he hit the crossbar bR, small margins.
Bellerin Was taken to the cleaners by McClean for their second.
And a final world for the ref, who clearly does not know thes same rule as Chelse benefitted from last week, if there is rotational fouling going on – as it was fucking obviously going on on Alexis, then you yellow card the next fucker, he clearly has no interest in doing so, in fact the Baggies got one yellow for the entire game.
If Xhaka had done the same studs up tackle as McClean, we can guess the colour the. Card would have been. And we’re we entitled to a penalty?, I guess not.

no your are right anicol, arsenal played outstandingly last season, we never had any sub par performances, the 16 dropped points in the 12 games after we went top by beating leicester city on feb 14h was nothing at all to do with Arsenal, and in fact that 12 games included our longest unbeaten run – 10 games, but even in that 10 games, we drew five of them, and if i remember correctly we were ahead in all of those 5 drawn games,10pts right there.
and yes anicol, you are right our record in the big games is great, the envy of all. its not like we have barely won an away game v a top 4 rival for years, and it certainly is not like we have not won an away game v a top 8 side this season – 5 defeats and a draw in the six games so far, spurs to play away yet, no clean sheet in those 6 games, 14 gols conceded, nothing awful about that stat at all.

11 PL games to go. I remember the last time I thought we weren’t going to make the top 4. It was when Aston Villa, of all clubs, were pushing us. Or rather, were leading us. We were 8 points behind them with 11 games to go. I remember because I told my friend why I was worried, and he said, that’s more than enough time to catch up. He was a Liverpool fan and could look at the situation without being too emotional about it.
I know it’s hard, it’s tough, and even the ones who want Wenger to stay are getting carried away with it all, if only because of their respect and admiration for him. But the situation is not as grim as is being made out. It’s a case of small margins.
Most of our problems come from not being able to manage/conquer the crucial moments. I doubt any single factor is responsible for this, but I know what we can affect, and that is to get a 100% behind the team, win, lose or draw, and regardless of how we play. Maybe even more if we aren’t playing well. Especially those of us who go to the stadium.
On the game yesterday, my take was that we were defensively suspect throughout. But going forward we were good. I know even Wenger said we didn’t create enough chances but we were playing against a well drilled team sitting deep. That’s tough for anybody and it only gets harder when the ref makes it clear he’s going to allow excessive physicality and let go fouls by them. I also think we were wrong to start with Walcott whose struggles against teams who sit deep and clog the channels are well known. That’s on the manager. And I also think Ramsey wasn’t playing the way he should (sorry ‘Bama) but I don’t know if Wenger would agree. (Probably not)
We should have had a red given for the ‘tackle’ on Alexis. None of this ‘if that were Xhaka’ business. It was definitely endangering an opponent lunging in studs up at that speed and was a clear red card. We also should have had a penalty to give us a chance to make it 2-2. Plus we had already lost Cech (and his height) to injury. I can understand why the players would lose heart. Understanding doesn’t equal acceptance by the way. Our own fans not willing to give them the former might actually be harming morale further.
All the same, this is the second time in recent weeks one of our CBs caused a panic in our defense by getting caught under a long high ball. That has nothing to do with tactics or positions. It is basic defending and comes down to individual errors. We also had enough numbers back and no one took responsibility to just deal with the problem.
My feeling while watching the game was that we did really well to fight back to 1-1 instantly. That we were unlucky to not create more chances (because of the referee mostly) and at around the 53rd minute mark I was thinking we’re looking like we’re building up confidence with our passing and the next 10 minutes will be key to the game because whoever scores now will likely win the game. Sadly, West Brom scored soon enough with all round terrible defending on our part (even if Bellerin was fouled)
I’m going to take a break from the Arsenal web scene for a while I think. Maybe watch some matches/goals from earlier in the season (or earlier seasons) and come back recharged for the final run-in.

I think Arsene is in fact an inveterate tease as we have seen over the years when he has tweaked the tails of the assembled journos at his press conferences.
The unexpected admission that he has finally made up his mind as to his own future, and that he will reveal all in the very near future is another such tease.
I thought I could hear the gearwheels crunching in the minds of the questioner, who obviously concluded that;
it was pointless to ask what the decision was regarding AW’s future – [If AW had wanted to tell him, he would already have done so];
And clearly it was also pointless to ask what was meant by the term ‘very, very soon’. [The word ‘soon’ is relative and could mean anything from, next July, the end of the season, after our FA Cup victory, or even in the next 5 minutes.]
It would have been fun to see AW’s responses if the guy had had the nerve to ask.
—– Actually, just between ourselves, Arsene — what was your decision? Hmmm? Come on – no one here on PA will let on – well except me, I am a renowned blabber mouth.
Having elicited an answer to that question, I will have saved your valuable time, as the ‘very, very soon’ phrase then becomes superfluous.
You can trust me – can’t you?

yes shard 11 games to go, but there will have to be a massive improvement on our last 11 league games, 5 wins, 1 draw and 5 defeats will not see us make top 4, it might not even see us make top 6. we currently sit 5pts off 4th placed lfc, with them playing city later today. So we will be at best 5pts off 4th place at end of todays play.
of course its not beyond us to overtake those ahead of us, but it is going to take a run of wins, and when you consider our best run of league wins this season is just 4 in a row, and that was back in october, and since then we have done a 3 game in a row in nov/dec, but since then we have only managed 2 wins in a row. We are in our worst run of form under Wenger, have lost 4 out of last 5 league games. the change around has to come quickly, of course we can do it, Man city then two london derbies.
Arsenal have to play 11 league games and an fa cup semi final in a space of 7 weeks, 2nd April – 21st May, so the team will have to find form on the go, there will be no spare weeks to prepare or work on things.

on Wenger saying he has his decision made and we will all know soon, some journos are reporting that he also said it will not be during the interlull two week. I can only think of one reason why the decision can not be revealed right away, if the decision is made to stay, he only has to inform the board, how long does that take, the contract is already there, so why hold it up, but if he is going, then the board might not want it revealed till they have at least made more headway in agreeing a deal with his replacement, if not in fact have it ready to reveal.

Sounds like nonsense to me,would make signing and, retaining players very difficult. And would make the board look weak.
Wenger doesn’t work on such short term…..and its clear a few things need fixing, if they are going to keep him, give him at least two years, if one year is all that’s on offer, I believe Mr Wenger may be well advised to go elsewhere.

I think for the last 3/4 years seasons at Trafford Park Blue Nose was on a rolling 12 month contract.
Makes a lot of sense when a manager reaches a certain age that a one year contract is the max.
Given AW’s view on player’s contracts in their 30s I don’t see a problem.

If it’s a rolling contract, with option to renew based on how they perform, maybe it could work, but if it’s just a one year deal to usher in change, just think it would be another year of unsettled players……and if being unsettled is making them perform as they are, perhaps to be avoided at all costs.
