I walked on the Emirates pitch 34 years before Wenger. A history of heroes and villains!

Welcome to the GunnersoreArse blog. Being blogged 918.74 kilometers (in a straight line) from the Emirates Stadium.

I was thinking about this last week and I started to reminisce how I’d walked regularly on the Emirates Stadium pitch, across the terraces and through the dressing rooms long long before it was even a twinkle in Wengers eye. In 1972, if someone had asked me what Chorizo was I probably would have said a Brazilian footballer, I was 18 years old and working for a company called J.R.Smith and Sons, a scrap iron and steel company owned by three brothers from Camden Town, Brian, Dennis and Ronnie. I worked with Dennis, they called him ‘Dennis the menace’ and the description was perfect, he was fucking crazy and he had his fingers in many different dodgy pies.  Dennis and Brian ran the Ashburton Grove site and Ronnie had control of a sister…

  1. I really enjoyed that. Its a joy to read a blog with a difference.
In other news it looks like Alexis is getting very close. Fingers crossed.

  2. That Chorizo fella was well tasty.

George, Snachez would represent a hell of a signing. One to really excite and fire the imafination. In fact, he will be considered a world class talent, right up until he signs for Arsenal. Then he will suffer the fate as Ozil!

Talking of a turkish german genius. I do think there are a lot fo similarities between him and Dennis. Both massively undervalued, particularly during their fledgling Arsenal careers. Although Bergkamp is rightly viewed by Gooners as legend and great, he still isn’t as highly rated by clueless pundits as he undoubtedly should be.

I don’t care if Ozil doesnt get the plaudits he deserves, I just hope he doesnt too.

I would love us to get Sanchez….. a real wet knickers type of signing.

George, thanks again for the reblog….. stats have gone through the roof. Not many comments but peeps are reading.

  6. Very enjoyable NB, being about four/five years younger than you I recognise the landscape and some of the characters. I have to admit Ashburton Grove was an unknown part of Islington to me!

Quite tribal was London, and Copenhagen Street or Highbury was terra incognita. I used to drink in the Favourite on Hornsey Rise, and the Salisbury, and both had some great larger than life people. And everyone of them, just about, a great story teller ( or that was my impression then) .

I remember the Favorite…. didn’t drink there often but ocasionally. Cally Road/Copenhagen St were my areas, I had mates who lived in Nash Court and York Way Court. Bloody tough areas. Franks McClintocks pub was the Sutton Arms, on the corner of Copenhagen St and the Cally. A mate told me recently that it’s now a Curry House 🙂 oh sorry George, I put a smiley.

  8. The Sutton has been an Ethiopian restaurant called the Marathon for ten+ years now NB – Copenhagen street back in the 60s and 70s used to have a pub on every corner – just about all gone now, mostly flats !

  9. What a shame…. a whole culture lost to property development. I bet I wouldn’t recognize the place now. If I remember correctly, Eddie Kelly I think, also had a pub, just behind Chapel Street Market….. he had a gangster drinking club upstairs. It may have been the Cloudsley or a pub like that. Such a long time ago now!

So you were raised in Hornsey Anicoll?

  10. No it wasn’t the Cloudsley……… it was a strange name, It will come to me!

  11. I was indeed NB though on the posh side of the hill – still have friends in what is left of the Rise and in Crouch End.
I am back there on Friday for a funeral so it will be another stroll down memory lane !

  12. I lived between Holloway Road and Caledonian Road, Mackenzie Road, Roman Way, that area. Back of Pentonville Prison. They started the slum clearance at the beginning of the 70’s. My parents were given a flat in Gillespie Road (all my mates were extremely jealous) and some of my mates and their families were moved to Hanley Road, right at the top end of Hornsey Road….. that’s why I remember the Favourite, when I went up that way we’d drink there.

Enjoy you visit, shame it’s for a funeral.

  13. Beautiful. I love reading stories like these. In a few years, the look, language and culture of that little piece of north London will be lost forever. It reminds me of all the hipsters moving to Brooklyn. They move in, gentrify all the old residents out of the place, kill things like the Brooklynese accent, all the old Jewish delies, the rough Italian neighborhoods and what remains is a bland, safe neighborhood for rich families to raise their kids in. All the poor people who made the place what it was in the first place, shipped off to suburbs far, far away.

  14. I’d be so happy if we got Alexis Sanchez. For me, he was one of the stars of this world cup. He basically took on Brazil all by himself and almost beat them.

Have you guys seen the state of hysteria Brazil is currently in because their boy prince is going to be out four weeks with a vertebra fracture? It’s as if none of them watched their team kick the shit out of Colombia. Damn, I hate Brazil. I hated them for being such bad winners, but this Neymar ordeal makes me hate them even more.

  15. Yeah Gains and they have also submitted “evidence” to FIFA in an attempt to get Silva’s ban lifted too!

  16. if the rumour about alexis is true, that means for a second season running, we have signed a world class player. but this time it is a winger who will add the much needed speed to the side. but if we are talking about a striker who can play alone without giroud, i dont think alexis is that good or better than walcott for example.
loic remy is a better choice for both role for me

  17. Hopefully, we will sign Remy and Sanchez then layksite!

    Like

  18. dex, i dont think we’ll be going for remy anymore. except we sell or lose any of our current strikers. dont forget we’ll be getting joel back next season.
our line up next season may look like this.
    szczesny
    debuchy, mart, kos, gibbs
    ramsey, khedira ozil
    walcott, giroud, sanchez

    Like

  19. Layksite…with Alexis and Campbell, there’d be no need for Remy. Both can definitely hold the ball as lone strikers, distribute, play across the frontline, assist and score.

Don’t forget we still have Theo, Poldi and Sanogo to complement Giroud.
Our counterattack becomes utterly devastating with these two. Throw in the Ox and Gnabry and we could see Rosicky playing for another 3 years!

Oh and let’s not be get it twisted, our Theo is NOT as good as either Alexis or Campbell.

    Poor Ryo Miyaichi!

  20. ..not to talk of what it’d do for Ozil.
His assists will go thru the roof…and he wouldn’t be burnt out

  21. I’d pass on Khedira personally.
    Too Huddlestonesque for me.
    Much prefer a Vidal/Fernandinho/Gilberto type….or a Vieira/Pogba

Did I hear you say Yaya Toure?
A freak of nature like that is hard to find…and even he might find it hard @ our tempo

  22. Theo not as good as Campbell? Hahaha! That is a good one Aman my man!

Also I don’t see Joel or Sanchez playing the lone striker role, hence the need for a central striker as well as Sanchez. Remy is still a possibility in my twisted mind.

  24. Better clear that up. I’m agreeing with Dex. Theo is miles better than Campbell and I’m not sure he isn’t as good as Alexis.

  25. My only concern about Theo is whether his recent injury will have taken much pace off him. If it hasn’t, and if he can stay clear of other knocks, then he is a great striker/winger. I don’t think it is a question of not being as good as Campbell (who may turn out to be very good indeed) but rather a case of Theo in his own right becoming an Arsenal all time great. I hope so anyhow.

  26. And thanks NB: left a note on your site, but wanted to say this here. How great to have such impeccable North London Arsenal supporting credentials but also to be so supportive of the new regime.

  27. Arsene says Theo will not lose any pace. That will do for me.

  28. If it hadn’t have been for the injury, we would have seen Theo playing more and more as the central striker, as he did vs the spuds, to great effect I might add. Oh, I just did.

  29. Theo is somewhat limited, but he is so good at what he is good at, hes fucking into the awesome class.

  30. It’s going to be interesting to see how Wenger uses Campbell next season. If he uses him on the right, his ability to cut in is going to wreak havoc with opposition defences. If he uses him down the middle, I expect him to be played as a false nine the way Van Persie used to play. Either way I’m excited to have him back in the team. I have waited three years to finally watch him play for us.

  31. I dont think he will keep him at the club after Theo comes back Gains!

  32. I hope I am wrong, but I am not sure he will be at the club more than a season either.

  33. As I have said before, but not sure if I said it here, Theo eventually signing his new contract after so many had jumped ship was a huge moment. It was really hard to know when he walked round the pitch after his 3 goals against Newcastle whether he was saying goodbye or deciding to stay. I think that had he gone then it would have saddened the manager beyond words. That he then went on to play such an influential role in securing 4th place at the end of the 12/13 season is probably why we were able to sign Mesut Ozil, and that in turn is why we seem to have a chance of signing even more good players now.

  34. Awesome indeed.

  35. I hope Theo and Diaby are over their injury issues, because we have 2 quality players there that we have not seen the best of. We have to remember that we were 7 points off the top, despite our issues last season. The right additions and an injury free season for some of our key performers and we are in with a good chance of winning major silverware.

  40. george, wenger will make joel sign a new contract if he want to him to play him next season. he has just a two years and if he comes back and blossom as i expect, he will have just a year left at the end of the season. but it will be a real shame if we lose him beceause joel is a going to be a world class player.

aman, joel is not better than theo at the moment. and i dont think he will be better than him as a striker anytime soon. but he is definately going to be a better alround player than theo. theo has limited skill like most england plays but definately good at what he does. which is to score and assist.
theo is better than alexis as a striker because alexis is more a winger than a center forward. he has never played as a lone striker. i saw him play for chile at junior levels, he was a winger. at udinese he was not their main striker, di natale was the main striker. at bacelona he is a winger. even last season when messi was injured a lot, tata refuse the pressure to play him as a striker, saying he will rather play sergi roberto there than alexis. and presently in the national team, he plays as a winger or just behind vargas who is not even at the level of walcott. walcott played as striker for saints and has always said he is a striker. maybe he will get his wish now. but like i said, we are signing a world class winger. that is good enough for me.

  41. dex, like i said, if we want a player that is so good as a lone striker when giroud is not available, and that can play with him in the same team, remy is my take. but as usual, the fans will not be very excited and it may not lift the spirit of the playing squad as alexis would.
take for instance, if we need a player who can play as a number 10 as well as a winger, i will choose cazorla ahead of ozil. even though ozil is the world class player that will excite and lift the spirit ot the suad more than santi, cazorla will do the job on offer better than ozil.

we go mad about biting but when someone nearly got crippled the default reply was
“he shouldnt feign injury as often”………as if that excuses criminal assaults with your knee on someones back …a very sensitive area of the body…. or how, me included, utterly hate robben but for different reasons ..i hate him cause he is good while th e majority hates him for diving which is stupid…diving is part of the game ….off ocurse someone doing it constantly to win penalties is annoying but if i had to deal with a bunch of neanderthals kicking me id dive when i could too and so would you….you make your living via your legs….maybe defenders need to stop challenging in the area unless they are 100% certain they will get the ball…dont leave your foot out..ill use it to get the penalty…..pressure, money, victory! dont give me a reaosn to dive and beat you..stay clear you twat defender or else ill dive/bite and then watch you cry to the ref and cameras hehe…..

    Like

  44. besides there needs to be a seperation between diving like a cheat to win a penalty and trick referee and thus yellow with taking advantage of the stupid defenders mistakes and reckless challenges and/or diving/jumping out the way to avoid clash/injury. just cause you didnt get clattered dont mean you cant get the foul….
