Shut Up Twitter Managers

A guest post from The Beck

Dear friends, strangers and haters.

For me, everything is about perspective, I judge people by it, I live by it and I let the perspective of others teach me as much as I can in life.

I’ve been using social media long enough and I have to be honest with you, I still don’t understand people’s logic when it comes to tweeting overly critical things about Arsenal, especially whilst watching them.

Some games…..we’ll barely reach the 30 minutes mark before some wise ass tells you how shit we’ve been and how *Giroud isn’t good enough for Arsenal* and then collectively begin talking about who we should buy in January, knowing exactly what price and what player, or at least pretending to.

The fucking disrespect these Twitter managers show to the players that are already here, playing for the shirt every week, especially when we’re top of the league.

Fans online find it hard to separate their instant emotion from the game, and the reactionary approach which fills them with the need to be a Twitter manager, an analyst, a fitness coach all in one, whilst the game is on.

It results in a lot of disrespectful tweets about the club, the manager and so on.

According to many Twitter managers, players can’t go off form, can’t get tired and cannot have bad patches without being directly replaced. And if a player isn’t replaced when a Twitter manager says so, then the manager has lost it, he’s playing a tired player and should be sacked or criticized endlessly for it, as he’s cost us 2 points here and there with his terrible substitutions.

But we’re top of the league….

(I can’t believe I’m even typing this)

But why is there a need to distribute criticism? why from us? what do we get out of it? I want you to think long and hard about that one. Why is there an interest in fans finding players or managers accountable and where does it lead?

Especially when we’ve done so well.

Why do we want to hold players accountable to their mistakes, and treat them like they don’t deserve to play for the shirt, especially at a time when they need us the most and will most likely play the next game? it seems to counter basic logic.

And why do I even care about the disrespect people show Arsenal players or managers, you can’t possibly love a club that much. The saddest thing is,

I do.

And I feel like many do too, much more than I can ever imagine.

Its not a contest about who loves what the most, its a dialogue in questioning why many approach criticism in this fashion.

I have no idea why I love Arsenal so much, why I’d sit and type up a blog on boxing day after a 3-1 win, about how it annoys me that many people pretend to know so much and in reality they have nothing to back it up.

Is it better if everyone on Twitter just agreed on the same reactionary senseless things and turned against the player’s or manager’s every move? If that is modern football in social media then I don’t think I want to be a part of it. People on Twitter make me feel dirty for being positive and backing the players when they are down, even though it feels like the right thing to do.

And regarding the transfer window, you wise guys, you have no idea who is going to be purchased or why, you have no idea who gets bought at what price, stop pretending. Just stop.

If a member of our squad makes a mistake, the manager will surely deal with him, if not him then the coaching staff. And they will probably do it when they can, or when they feel its best, not according to a Twitter Manager’s timeline.

You personally have no ability to change a thing, yet your Twitter manager tweet suggests otherwise.

Your tweet about when we need to sub a player, its interactive, but that’s all it is, you’re sitting there, telling a manager who is never going to listen to you, who is probably miles away, to sub a player he probably won’t, in the hope that you’ll get it right and say I told you so on Twitter.

Do people realize how absolutely pathetic that is? It’s so sad. (And I’ve read my own tweets, I know about sadness.)

It’s about the tone and its about the language you use.

I.E.

A – “x player needs to get off now, he looks tired”

B – “x player looks a bit tired, it’ll be interesting to see what subs we bring on”

(A), almost makes it sound like you’re in charge, and you’re incredibly demanding, I know you’re fucking not, but you certainly make it sound like you are.

(B) denotes that you’ve done well with your eyes and noticed a player is tired and you’re interested in seeing what will change.

There is a massive difference between them both, it tells people what kind of person you are. Or maybe it just tells me.

Fans need to get over themselves, including me.

If a player is still around, there is a reason for it, even if you might not agree with it, there is a reason for it. I could barely understand why people professed a genius ability to tell others which Arsenal player was poor in a game, when it was fairly obvious.

Twitter managers can’t understand why a sub isn’t made, they have an inability to see things from an actual manager’s point of view. If the manager fails to see it from their point of view, he is wrong, they are right.

It seems like we all want to be right, except it just doesn’t matter, none of our footballing opinions are that good, if they were, we’d be working in football. And I mean real football, not journalism.

Even when pointing out that a player is poor, its obvious when a player is poor or goes through a poor patch of jadedness, tiredness or lack of confidence.

But you’re a supporter, aren’t you?

Except it does appear that in 2013,

Supporter = Critic with a keyboard and nutella.

Opinions are lovely and all…. but….week by week I see thought by thought, passed off as magical management in hindsight, when I feel those type of people would barely last a week in a mental institute, let alone a management position.

Tweets in hindsight, being overly critical and saying x player should have finished this or x player should have done that, its based on expectation, its based on our understanding, which for me personally is so full of shit and overestimation of our own ability and understanding of the game.

And the saddest part about all of it, is that we’re top of the league, after many told me we wouldn’t be anywhere near in the summer, after everyone told me Arsene’s time was up and all of the players he bought were shit and nothing could change that, nothing, no matter how deluded I got.

And Theo and Podolski will be there to pick up for Giroud when he’s having a bad game or not playing, just like they did today (lets ignore the assist cause it fits the narrative).

We are top of the league without Giroud having these two outlets for most of the season so far. With him having to do tireless running on his own.

I try my best to judge them as a team, and even then I’m fairly sure my opinions are worthless.

*All we want is a competitive team*

Well you got it.

*All we want is a striker who scores*

Shut up.

Just let me, tell you to shut up.

Just let me enjoy this moment, as I imagine people reading, being told to shut up, by me.

Just shut up.

I said it before, the same people who were laughing at me for saying we could finish 1st in the summer, are now experts and expect us to score at every opportunity and if we don’t, we’re shit, or we’re lucky.

Even though we’ve had countless of decisions go against us, even though we’ve had a rough schedule and a tired squad, which has been taken away by badly timed illnesses and injuries.

We’re top of the league, it might not last, but where is the fucking credit.

Where is the credit for Arsene for taking us here compared to where we were this time last year? I don’t care that other teams have done worse this season, its their job to win the title, some of them have outspent us both in wages and net spend for over a decade and after 18 games we are ahead of them.

People are so quick to give fast criticism but so slow to praise when praise is due.

They would rather talk about his recent misses, than his overall game and how over a season he might be great for us, even if he doesn’t score, even if we get another player in January, even if we don’t and Podolski and Theo form an outstanding partnership with him.

P.S. I don’t believe Giroud can manage on his own, I would prefer him to rotate with another good striker, but this seems so obvious and it has been since the summer. I welcome any good signings for the good of Arsenal, but its an opinion, its not presented like a fact, like I work there, like I own the club and know all that goes on.

I won’t be that Twitter manager that constantly goes on about how we have to put £20m on this player and £35m on the other, no one is listening to you, you’re just demanding things on behalf of the club, on Twitter, mostly without any inside knowledge or idea about what the manager is thinking,  its actually quite cute and special to be honest.

Vermaelen is another one, people are so on his back, waiting for every mistake he’ll make, won’t even give the guy a second to adjust.

Just shut up.

Pressure to succeed at Arsenal, is very high. I don’t think as a supporter you should not criticize, I think constructive criticism is very healthy, I just wish we’d aim it in the right place & ask where current criticism has taken us.

I just think there are far better things to criticize in life.

And I also think there are far better things in life to do, than to pretend to be an expert Twitter manager when your team is losing, and a happy glorified fan when you’re winning.

Have a word with yourself.

(I probably don’t mean anything I say and I’m really sorry)

but shut up.

P.S.

(I accept no personal responsibility for this blog).

Much love and happy new year,

Alexander

  1. i hav not posted any comment in a week because of the -ve vibes everywhere. kudos to positive arsenal team for supporting thick and thing. but we have remain top still and now we have some of our players coming back.

beck, thanks for the post. giroud may not be having a great game by his standard but he still managed to get an assist. plus he works tirelessly which allows theo and poldi to capitalise.
the way to go is, if you dont have something positive to say, keep shut. and dont say thing stupid when your emotion is high.

As you know I have a very small, selective number of persons on my timeline (thank heavens) and even though they are generally good supporters the slating and slagging of the team while we were hunting a goal in the 1st half was abhorrent. As the great Beck said above:

“Pressure to succeed at Arsenal, is very high. I don’t think as supporter you should not criticize, I think criticism is very healthy, I just wish we’d aim it in the right place.” I would add: At the right time.

Anyway Beck has said it all. Nothing more to add. Great job my twitter friend.

    Well said.
Unfortunately, as we have seen it is too much to ask for those who wrote in public that the manager couldn’t do tactics, that the manager has lost it and is incapable of any flexibility, that the manager is a tyrant who has ruined english football, that the manager was not going to sign any players in 2013 (the latter was repeated like a manic demented mantra), it’s too much to ask these humble and brave souls to admit that they had and have no idea what they were and are gibbering on about.
Instead, they will declare that you do not tolerate others’ opinions. In spite of evidence to the contrary. Written within their own archives no less!

    Mean Lean:
“Ironically so many people who say that Wenger is tactically clueless often know very little about tactics or have any insight into the game.” It is what it is.

We all know what the problems with Modern Football are. In spite of the years of propaganda, by some of our own self-declared experts we know that they are not exclusive to AFC. E.g. Very weird to see people angry with the club on the standing issue. AISA (& the AST, so they know how these things work…no excuse for being a twat!) contributed to the white paper the government have probably thrown in the bin by now a few years ago. Since then fans group have got together on the Standing and other issues whilst the bin baggers have been hiring billboards in N5 (well done! Idiots.), and therefore the recent anger at the clubs stewards at AFC very deliberately ignores the understanding that the club could be completely screwed over by the council if they don’t enforce the law. Arsenal FC don’t own the local council, or get given stadiums by them… Progress on standing will be slow and will not be led by one club. I would have imagined that those whose families have been supporting the club for generations would know this. Therefore the very recent behaviour of the binbaggers is even more uncredible, disgraceful in fact.

Many of us were writing what the Arseblogger was forced to write about the bitter idiots the other week for years, it is why we eneded up here and why George formed PA: because it was impossible to find an Arsenal football blog where the same crew of idiots were not trying to spread these lies (this has been proven, and observed). It’s very hard to chat footy with some fellow footy fans when some drooling bitter prune is rocking on his heels shouting and repeating into his empty bottle, “he doesn’t do tactics, he doesn’t sign players, ever, he doesn’t let his players shoot”. Credit to Arseblog for that, better late then never.
There will always be idiots, but it’s high time these bleating Groaners were called out by those who haven’t had the courage to do so to date. They know who they are.

Arsenal spent two seasons rebuilding. A scary and difficult process. Came third one year, fourth the next. Not bad in a league with two gas clubs and officials that were happy to go for tea and biscuits with Sah Slurgus. Some thrills and spills along the way. In hindsight we can see the wisdom (and success) in following such a path compared with say the team up the road and their understanding that re-building a team after losing a key player (or, say, two of the stars from the last WC) is not like making love to beautiful woman, but more like a supermarket sweep. I think I prefer Swiss Tony’s philosophy.

How many expert ‘bloggers’ out there used the term “rebuild” when reflecting upon what was happening at the club at the time? They had two years to get it out there?

  7. Getting to the top of the pile reflects the aggregate of results. Nothing more nothing less. We are the best team as at the Xmas turnaround, precise halfway bend coming up, but as close as it can get and City showing monied depth now. We’ve completed a trio or more of some of the most challenging games we anticipate. We are 2nd on defensive record, third in goals scored, a ratio of 1:2 conceded v scored, and so aggregate top. Theo and Lukas are back and looking hungry, perfect timing. Does anything else really matter? I doubt it. Let the hot air rise, up up and away.

  8. And vitally, Arsenal has a track record for results in the last third of the season. If we get the right momentum, we will be unstoppable. That’s what Wenger is thinking. He knows.

  10. I don’t know how you can make such bastards happy. Without having played three of our biggest goal threats from last season (I’m counting Santi’s injury spell) for the first half of the season, we have made it past the group of death in the CL and we remain top of the league ahead of the financial dopers. If you’re still gloomy after all this, chances are you’re a huge dick.

With regard to Giroud, he will start scoring a hell of a lot more now that Theo and Poldi are back in the squad. These fuckers need to give him a second to readjust from playing the hold up man/provider to playing with a pair of pacy wingers who can whip in a decent cross.

  13. I don’t understand the purpose of criticising, on twitter and on blogs, at all. It’s not going to change anything and you learn nothing from it. It’s nothing but an emotional release. I’d rather try to understand something than get angry about it. Or at least understand it *before* getting myself in a state.

Arsene not using his substitutes against Chelsea is a great example. The immediate twitter reaction from some was rabid, foaming-at-the-mouth, apoplectic rage. Bizarre. He doesn’t have to use his subs if he doesn’t want to; if he doesn’t feel it will improve the situation. Should he use them for the sake of it, because conventional fan wisdom dictates that subs are there to be used, always, regardless of how the game is progressing?

Nobody seeks to understand anything. It’s ironic when Arsene is so often accused of being stubborn and inflexible, how these people never change from their well established way of thinking. I enjoy it when Arsene does something that gets twitter experts angry and confused. I see it as an opportunity to have a good think about what he did and why, read what he says about his decision in the post-match conference, and maybe learn a little something. He’s not just the manager but my own personal mentor on football, someone with a phenomenal mind and who has dedicated it to football. Time spent deluding yourself that you are somehow on his level is time you could have spent learning something from him about the game.

The plague is not unique to our club. The only difference is, we look for long term growth and dont throw money at problems or change managers when things get hard. I think that stubbornness to do things the right way despite popular reactionary opinion pisses off the section of our support that are so used to reaction-ism and hyperbole in other aspects of their social-media influenced life.

Vermaelen has done quite well. It would be harsh for him to lose his place.

We’re also not physios, doctors, defensive coaches, goalkeeping coaches, kit mangers or accountants and we probably can’t even make a pot of tea as got as these twitter experts (sorry Doris, but you’re simply not up to it anymore! all the top clubs drink cortado’s these days don’t you know? and we don’t want Arsenal to seem backward now do we dear?, thanks for your 50 years of service, please do pick something up for 15% off down in the gift shop as a token of our thanks on your way out the door, and say hi to Lady Nina down at the Bingo hall).

    Leo, great points about Arsene.

In the Chelsea game, my understanding was that, after around 70 minutes, we started building a tempo. The players clicked and there were many waves of attacks in which all our offensive players were involved. It made sense to leave those set of players who were working well in attacking Chelsea’s goal and were close to scoring. Changing one or two of those players could possibly have disrupted the rhythm.

Unless I have got this wrong he talks about how important returning players are as additions to the squad at this busy and uniquely English time: the news reports have turned this into Per “demands new signings in January.” So if there are no signings, they will then turn it into a split between Per and AW.

  33. Great article Alex, I share your thoughts on much of it. I can never get how people seem to think that assembling a top team at that level ( or any other really) is such as easy task… according to them! We’re in first and to hear it you’d think that relegation is a possibility ! Madness! There is no magic recipe in building a team, It’s not like making cookies!!

My motto with following Arsenal ( and life in general!) is to enjoy it when we’re on an up cycle and not to despair when things aren’t going as hoped for. Easy recipe, not always easy to follow but keeps me sane!

I am enjoying this Arsenal team, they seem to be a close knit unit which is not a given these mega buck, mega ego days. The pieces are all pretty much there for us to compete with any team in the world. We may finish first, we may not. I will support them as best I can no matter what!

I have no doubt that Arsene Wenger has forgotten more about managing at that level than I will ever know in my life. It doesn’t mean that he is perfect but I believe that he takes it a hell of a lot more seriously than all of us put together!

I found this site a few months ago and am really enjoying it! Too many people forget that being a “supporter” means supporting the team that you supposedly are a fan of.

Looking forward to Sunday and another big team effort and the 3 points! COYG!!

That was my feeling too. We were starting to build some momentum and looking more fluid, the 9 days’ rest meant the players were relatively fresh and able to see out the 90 minutes. We didn’t look like a team crying out for changes to me so I wasn’t shocked that once it got to the last 20 minutes or so Arsene just left them to it, changes might just as easily have spoiled the control we began to exert.

What parent hasn’t been told that so and so’s parents are so cool – that their house is amazing – that they are allowed to do this, that and the other? It gets a mite more tiresome during the adolesscent years: angry confrontations, spiced up by the thrill of forming basic arguments (but arguments that ignore any reality) for the first time – if you saw Russell Brand argue with Jeremy Paxman recently you get the idea, but then soured by a descent into tirades of abuse as the gap in logic is gently pointed out.
“Then make Charlie your father” says Linda to her son Biff in Death of a Salesman, before going on to point out that he can’t do that. So the angry one either leaves home never to return or grows up to realise that maybe things weren’t quite as black and white as he used to think, and that perhaps after all the core values that home insisted on are those that he will now live his life by.

And talking of black and white I am more confident about that game than I ever was about the West Ham match, and even more so after our excellent result and the laboured way twelve-man Newcastle ponderously dispatched nine-man Stoke.

Forgive me a thought on the excellent Giroud, who as well as carrying the burden of our team’s attack since August, not to mention suffering the indignity of every striker rumour throughout last summer, now bizarrely finds himself publically vilified for having propelled us to the top of the league. It may well be that his touch in front of goal is a little awry right now simply because of a technical issue, most probably due to body position (he is getting too square on just now). All sportsmen and women have moments when some aspect of their game deserts them (ask any club golfer), and most find that the fault is relatively easily solved once the coach isolates the problem. I have no doubt that the video analysts at the club will be working on this with him, and that a little quiet time on the practice ground will soon see him back to his immense best.

  49. giroud is unbelievable as targetman, but lately the lad needs 20 applications to score one…i think its because he is tooooooo keen to do good he ends up worrying too much….hence the hands in mouth “god what have i missed, putan de ballon” exasperations. i also think that the barbaric confidence of podolski and the directness of walcott will release a bit of the burden and oli will be able to focus on killing off chances and stop feeling sorry for himslef….. na na na nanananan ..NA NA NA NA….

  50. Complements of the season PA! Good win for the Arsenal on Thursday.
LeoS I totally agree with you, re: Arsene’s lack of subs against Chelsea. The boss afterwards said that the players didn’t look tired and any substitution towards the final part of the game may have disrupted the team balance especially on the defensive side. This brought back memories of our FA cup tie against Blackburn last season. We had Blackburn against the ropes and were pressing for a goal (I remember Mozart hitting the bar with a pile driver) and then the subs came on; santi, jack and I think it was theo (all quality players)! 30 secs later we go and concede the softest of goals. The rest is history. Arsene does know!
