Fascinating conversation. Can anyone point me to the actual quotes where Big Nic earned this bigheaded arrogant tag? I’m wondering because for a very long time I’ve suspected this is a lazy stereotype that might only be true because it’s been repeated often enough.
Now I must be honest, I don’t listen to radio watch tv or read papers as all of them lie all of the time so it maybe he has made some public utterance that I’ve missed.
Good point Steww. I’m not sure that he is big headed so much as super confident, which surely you need to be to make it in that profession? The question is whether he is over-confident and unwilling to work to improve himself? AW seems willing to give him a chance to show the opposite, so we should all give him the chance too. He has proven that he has the talent and potential to be great and he is a few years older now, so maybe he has matured enough to be helpful to the team?
On Bendtner the ‘arrogant’ tag/image started about 3 years ago and there is still available on the Internet an interview young Nick gave to Matt Lawson of the Mail in which the the then 22 year old striker sets out his stall forcefully. Ironically it was a short while after his first car crash, which disrupted his career with us at a time when he was starting to play regularly. Since then he has never got back on track, with us, at SunLun and at Juve he wasted a whole season, although again much of that was down to injury. With the Danes suspending him for boozing he really had hit the ground hard.
Is he arrogant ? Not really but let’s just say his early confidence in his abilities and his potential to be the best or one of the best strikers in the world has by no means been borne out.
I’ve just been offered two tickets for the away game at Swansea. Anybody interested in joining me? Plot a driving route on google maps from Chesterfield to SA1 2FA. If you are close, on route, let me know as soon as possible.
I haven’t even finished listening to this podcast but felt I had to write – right now – as I’m worried about possible unutterable excretions/emissions – due to the conversation, round about 19:30, when discussing ‘who’d be picked for Champs Le final tmrw, if everyone were fit’.
George instantly picked a team which wholeheartedly met with my approval, but then Ro replaced Arteta with Diaby. I so wanna see Abou running tings in BIG matches – any matches.
I started making noises: Ooh yes/ yes, Oh arrgh, etc, and I had to pause the pod in order to regain my composure, such as it is.
Right, I’ll maybe shower and then un-pause and listen on, as one does (doesn’t one?). I see comments about our Nic, so I’m looking forward to hearing what that’s all about.
I’ve now listened to the whole show. Excellent. Thanks.
TR7 for Mertesacker. Love it.
I’d just about given up on podcasts. From the high point of Alan Davies’s rant about Shawcross, and Arseblog’s ‘Lenny’ analogy – they quickly descended into “useless players/change the manager” mode. I had to stop listening. I didn’t understand their “support”.
On this blog and with these podcasts, I can hear SUPPORT. Support for Arsenal. I’m an Arsenal supporter and I’m lovin’ what I hear. Thank you.
Lovely podcast, very thoughtful comments from Daniel Cowan. Bradyesque is very witty and George goes with the northern stereotype of telling it like it is.
@ steww and Passenal
I’m not sure there’s a lot of difference between arrogance and the behaviour you describe. But he’s a very good striker and everyone can turn over a new leaf.
Speaking from no professional experience whatsoever, I suspect that his brushes with the law, his injuries and his time away from Arsenal have all had an effect on him and he means it when he says he is totally committed to the club. There has to be a reason why he didn’t leave for any of the several good clubs who wanted him, and it might be that a big part of him doesn’t want to go. The money might just be an excuse.
The length of the podcast is good, too. I still think you need something unusual in/as one of the segments. I have no idea what, just to be really annoying.
Wenger said he blocked Bendtner’s move to Crystal Palace because we failed to recruit a striker during the transfer window. It is in a recent interview on Arsenal Player (sorry I can’t be more precise but I did hear it on there)
Yes, AW did block that move but there have been several other moves, both loans and permanent transfers over the last two or three years which have not come about because the player, while professing a wish to join the new club, has not been able to agree personal terms (according to the interested clubs).
This is why I wondered whether deep down Bendtner didn’t really want to leave.
@FG
Yeah, there was the example of Frankfurt just this transfer window. That one was pretty public, Frankfurt even had it on their website saying that they’ve entered negotiations with Bendtner and then failed to agree personal terms.
There’s a fine line between big-headed and super-confident; strikers lacking confidence seldom score “confidence goals”. Henry was elegantly confident as much as Ian Wright was in-yer-face silly confident. But first things first: fitness, honing skills, dedication, hours of lonely work; without that NB is doomed. AW has some reason to allow him a second chance, a glimpse of what could be; the rest is up to the young man, but time is running out. We signed Sanogo, only just failed to sign Eto’o and Ba, so intentions were clear a month ago. January, if NB has not shown his worth, we will sign a striker.
So far beautiful Wengerball and we had several decent half chances. But the atmosphere at the stadium is crazy. Why can’t we have such atmosphere at the Emirates? Just imagine. The team wouldn’t lack confidence at hope if that was the case.
@fins
Their right side is ripe for the taking and Walcott has already beaten their full back several times, but no end product (was offside once, pulled back the other time but no foul given). We are keeping all of the ball, Marseille are standing off and giving us space. They are inviting us to attack. Most promising opportunity was after Özil found himself in space at the left edge of the box and pulled back a beautifully lofted cross for Walcott to head but it was cleared by a defender just in front of the line.
It’s been some quiet 5 minutes now. Marseilles seeing more of the ball, but not really threatening with it because we are pressing well. They had a couple of standards but nothing that bothered Szcz.

He has O levels
But is it only me who thinks he is a totally dull cannot think of one original or interesting two bob dullard ?
Arr, Marseilles went close this time. Ball not properly cleared after a corner, sprayed out wide, cross coming in and Ayew had a free header in the box. I think it’s time we up our tempo again.
HAlf time. We started well enough but we have gifted more and more control to Marseilles. Apart from two standards they haven’t really been threatening but I feel we need to start the second half strongly to get a deserved lead.
