What did that one-nil result tell us?
Well excuse me for saying this, but it told some of us nothing we didn’t already know. But let’s have a think what it should have told the malcontents.
For starters, despite Spurs spending north of £100 million, and us having a paper thin squad ravaged by injuries, we are a better team.
I felt that we were way below our fluent best and that Santi and Rosicky, despite their efforts, had off-days. With more precisely weighted balls from them, we could have scored a bucket-full. Dont get me wrong, I am not moaning about them, or saying they were bad, just that from our two most technically gifted players, we normally see better.
The upside, which totally outweighs any small downside, is that we had a shape and a tenacity that tells me that the manager is 100% right about this group of players. I would go as far as saying that it’s the most tightly knit squad we have seen under Arsene.
Our dodgy defence is anything but dodgy, no matter what the halfwits in the media say. I still think Bac is by far and away our number one right-back, but Carl is a fine understudy.
Laurent and Per are easily the best centre-back pair in the league.
Even at this early stage. I am confident that Flamini is exactly what we have been crying out for. Not only as cover for Mikel but an actual alternative.
Now, what’s all this rubbish about Arsene not doing tactics? Those looked like different tactics to our normal stuff to me!
I really can’t say how happy I am that Arsene has once again made mugs out of his detractors. When will they learn?
Let’s see what today brings and where we are tomorrow.
Great team, great players, great manager, great club and a great future.
See you all tomorrow.
I’m still grinning from yesterday George.
Arsene Wenger will have his magic hat on today, you can be sure of that.

Spot on. This team play for each other. Without the presence of a so called marquee player super star thankfully. They know it’s on them and they are all they have got so they will fight tooth and nail for each other. Great TEAM ethics. I still expect a very good season with us jocking for first or second with chelski..
Compared to our midfielders the spudniks looked like moving in slow motion.
UP THE GUNNERS!!!!!!!
PS. looks like we will be getting us masud ozil. Our first player of Turkish heritage. Probably as long term replacement for TOMAS in a couple years. Very good player with superior technical ability. Hope it comes to pass.

Three seasons ago we were 2-0 up and ended up losing 2-3. Each time Spuds came forward it was panic stations. Two years ago we were 2-0 down because of a very shakey opening, and last season it was almost the same picture, 0-1 and a couple of narrow squeaks, until Ade committed hari-kiri and Spuds fell apart.
Yesterday in contrast and even in the final frantic few minutes I did not think for one moment our defence would crack or that the opposition would get that ball over that line. Exemplary defending, well organised, disciplined, no wild tackling in the box. And at the back Szcz did everything right.
With a foundation like that many things are possible.

A reasonable piece PG and I agree, Wenger showed he has a tactical brain. We let Spurs dominate possession happy in the knowledge we are a counter attacking force. In fact we should have scored 2 or 3 more (which gives more weight to those saying we need another stirker). But our defence is much tighter than many believe and I have thought this for some time (didn’t we have the best premiership away defensive record last year?). Per and Laurent are solid and Flamini just in front gives them excellent cover. Lets hope we can maintain the consistency shown in the past 3 matches.

Spot on George. We were under par yesterday, some of the passing was hurried and poorly judged – and that from some of the best players in the League. And we lost another injured player. And we were still too good for them.
Imagine if their keeper hadn’t been quite so sharp, we would have buried them. As it was it we enjoyed a perfect football Sunday.

There were many things I liked about yesterday, many “little deaths”.
Here are a few:
Arsenal spirit.
Aaron Ramsey confirming his stature
Typically unassuming but effective Flamini role, positionally excellent (and did I see him even shouting at the lads to get into the right position?)
Per and Kos; fabulous, really
The heart of Jenks
Giroud’s wondrous touch, his hold-up play, none better in the whole EPL
Theo always looked dangerous, even when we were on the back-foot
Chewie will be one of the best keepers in the EPL, he’s not that far off even now
Santi has such consistency of skill, like Tomas, it’s mind-boggling
Arsenal composure
We went into defensive shell when Jack and the Tomas had to go off; and we did it so seamlessly, effectively, Spurs resorted to long range artillery, hoped for pinball goal, and as many crosses as they could (I liked their wing play too, very good).
Arsenal skill
We won. We should really have done so 2-0.
We won in our comfort zone.
And Spurs. Better than I expected in truth, a decent side, noticeably more physical than recent Spurs sides; very fast skillful wing play, some reasonable midfield work, nothing to speak of upfront though, and a little square at the back. All a bit predictable though. Lots of work for them. They will not score enough like this.

One-nil to the Arsenal!………As sweet as 5-2!
I agree with you George especially concerning the team spirit within the squad. The boys fought for each other and Flamini looked like he was never away from the premises.
On the performance itself, we all know that it was nowhere near the level these boys play at but I guess we have both Wengerball and Bouldyball (according to Anicoll). Also the save by Sczezzer from a deflected shot was world class! That said, we could have humiliated the “enemy” had their keeper not played a blinder (surely he’s got a black eye after taking such pounding).
Mesut Ozil to Arsenal is looking like happening I see!…………..Arsene’s still scheming!

Comment from Marcus who posts over t’other blog (less seldom these days)
No doubt about it, the post game press conference from AVB where he announced the transfer was meant to be a symbolic moment. It may still prove to be so, just not quite in the way that they had imagined. Epic fail. Staggeringly funny.
“I think Daniel Levy really was planning for a huge and momentous day yesterday.
Holding up the Bale transfer in the way he did was clearly designed to ensure we hadn’t bought any replacements by yesterday, whilst Spurs would flaunt their 7 new players worth 100Mill.
Clearly he was expecting yesterday to be a watershed day, the day Spurs broke the psychological glass ceiling of Arsenal long-time domination, and also won at the EMs (for only the 2nd time).
The day the media would crow, (or is that cock-a-doodle), about the waxing strong of the Tots, and the Waning dim of the Goons.
In short he was planning a psychological, PR, and moral victory of grand order, on top of winning the match yesterday. The day Spurs became a Big Team, and Arsenal fell out of the top 4.
He failed….but don’t expect the Muddia to say much about it.”

And still a couple of hours left to offload Bentner and Park.
hell, it looks like Arsene might even pick up a couple more cheapie’s just for a lark.

That victory was just what we needed. By we, I mean the squad and the positive supporters who had to take in the ear from every negative bastard who calls himself an Arsenal supporter.
I’m concerned about Ozil coming into the squad. Does this mean we don’t get to watch Santi in the middle, like he played at Fulham, ever again? I sure hope not, because on that form I sincerely struggle to think of anyone who can distribute the ball better from that position than him.

If Ozil gets a regular start, you are right it is going to mix up the formation we’ve got right now.
My guess is that jack and the Ox will move more forward – like non-false9’s, or maybe Wenger will play Ozil in the Bergkamp position?

I am just excited to see Mesut Ozil at Arsenal, hoping not to jinx it, but looks real by now; about to be announced most papers say. Ozil was for me the outstanding player in the German national team in 2010, amazing talent, beating a player with ease to create space and making a telling through pass; one part Jack, one part Cesc. I watched him play mainly from the right of midfield, but also centrally, and then he would pop up out of nowhere on the left wing. It looked as though he took a step backwards at RM after the excitement of performances for Germany. But look at the stats, they are really quite amazing! The passes and assists. And to an extent, the goals, not many but telling. I was surprised at the time that Arsenal didn’t go all out to buy him, he seems such a fit, but obviously money was an issue, and RM had the pulling power anyway. It has kind of been a dream to see him in Arsenal colours, and now, unbelievably …! Such is life.

Once sufficient hats have been consumed, of course.
We’re top 4 again, and Liverpool chavs and city look eminently beatable, despite the love in from the pundits.
You should see the wailing from manure fans on the web that the have missed out in Cesc and now Ozil, they are beginning to realise that genuine talented players won’t touch Moyes with a 10m barge pole – just look at how he hasn’t a clue how to use Kagawa, who is a top top talent.

It’s more likely (and like a dream come to life) that Santi (or Ozil) would play left and drift in (a role Santi has been exceptional in, that creates a 4 v 3 or 5 v 4 scenario through the middle, with Gibbs overlapping, a nightmare for defenders), Ozil will swap with Santi from time to time and one move leftwards. Ozil covers centre, right and left and is much more mobile that usual, like Santi in fact. This is the true flexibility of 4-2-3-1 (and where many of Lukas’ goals come from, drifting in from the left to create the extra unmarked man in the middle, Gibbs keeping their right back in position). I would guess we’ll see a lot more threat created from the left with Ozil and Santi. Ozil will compete with Lukas for a starting place, not with Santi. Ozil is then, effectively, 3G’s replacement, but could equally play from the right if needed there. We’ve replaced one of our slightly weaker links with one of the best attacking midfielders in the world. That’s my take! Transfers? AW is just about to show up the EPL prima dona brigade and media idiots with the most thrilling signing of any team this summer. I rate it higher than Hazard to Chelsea.

So it was the “end of an era” eh? Or the mighty A-blogger who declared to his thousands of followers that AW and IG had no plan for the transfer window.
A pox on these big blogs for the shameless and treacherous role they have played over the past two years in undermining support for our greatest ever manager. As Goonerarchy noted they are “unaccountable” and feed the media with the fuel necessary to fan the flames of anger and impatience that erupted 2 weeks ago at the Emirates.
Thanks George for distancing yourself and us from such cold treachery dressed up in fancy chat, like the serpent in the garden. Gloat as you should; Wenger is getting the top, top quality he promised without breaking the bank. While other clubs flirt with insolvency as the debts pile up, we bide our time and opportunistically pick up the Cazorla’s and Ozil’s at cut rate prices.
A golden era awaits. The cannon will prevail.
