A Great Big Onion

Today’s post comes from everyone’s favourite Lahndan Cabbie, and he doesn’t care where you’re from.
Take it away Mel…

photo

Amongst all the recent shenanigans between George and his twitter chums the one remark that struck me more than any other was this. When asking about his credentials as a fan (appearances, length of service, location) this guy told George his opinion was not valid. Bearing in mind that this was in the middle of a highly entertaining debate between a Yorkshireman and a Lancastrian (neither of whom will be sending each other Christmas cards soon!) the irony was clearly lost on this poor unfortunate who had butted in.

Now I’m from London. Yes bow bells & all that, born and bred, started going in 78 and still going. From Alan Sunderland’s winner in 79 to Alan Sugar’s equaliser a few weeks ago! I bloody love em. My mother still tells a story about when just after the above photo was taken I ran away from home taking just my Arsenal kit and some library books in a carrier bag. I made it to the top of the street and came back

“Why’d you come back?’

she asked,

“I forgot the socks”

came the reply (like I was gonna get a game). There’s nothing quite like The Arsenal is there?

On my non-football travels I’ll seek out places where I can watch a game if we’re playing and if a local turns up cheering us on or wearing an Arsenal shirt they’re  in danger of being bored and or drunk to death by me telling them about my night at Anfield in 89. My point is I appear to tick all the boxes, well bully for me. But here’s the thing: Does that make me a better supporter? Does it entitle me to more of an opinion than anybody else?

The answer is simple. Of course it doesn’t, if you’re Arsenal, you’re Arsenal. From New Delhi to New Zealand, from Angel to Alabama you’ll do for me. As long as you behave the Arsenal way I don’t care where you’re from, how long you’ve been supporting or if you’ve never seen a game live. In fact I’ll let you into a little secret – you probably know more than me! (I never did read those library books).

Now let’s face those cannons outwards a ltogether now! We all follow the Arsenal…over land and sea!…….

  2. I think the criticism that is directed from some AFC towards our brethren in far flung places is that they appear to ‘enjoy’ the football, and the players, and being a ‘supporter’.

That simple pleasure does not fit easily with the grim joyless I-know-my-rights mentality of the bin bag brigade

Good write up Mel – when I was a kid I’d meet ancient blokes who had been going 40-45 years, remembered the 30s teams or even before that and were always happy to talk about the old days and answer my no doubt daft questions

As I have now achieved ancient status it would be bad form to treat new fans with any less respect than I received

  5. Lovely stuff Mel!!

That’s exactly how I’ve always looked at it. “If you’re Arsenal, you’re Arsenal”. Amen.

It’s just fantastic that we continue to attract all these supporters from afar (I was looking at the beaming faces on some of those kids in Indonesia, just the thrill and joy at meeting their heroes. No cynicism in sight. Heart warming), and often they have a unique and refreshing perspective on the thing I love.

And to me it shows we must be doing something right if folks are still fatally attracted to the club, in spite of our lack of shiny baubles in recent seasons.

    Oh yeah, lest i forget:

    COYR!

  8. I’m a hopeless romantic as well Mel, when it comes to the Arsenal. Football in general actually. I’m sure most of us are on here. Nothing wrong with it either, we should be proud of it.

I get the impression Arsene is as well. One of the many reasons I love the guy.

I better shut up as well. Enjoy the footie (and the cricket) and whatever else you perverts get up to on a sunny Sunday like this.

  9. “If you are Arsenal, you are Arsenal”

Great line Mel. We are all Arsenal supporters, from the ones who know so much about the club to the ones that know so little.

I wouldnt have a problem with the ones that attached themselves to the club during Arsene’s trophy years, if they understood what the club went through in the last 7-8 years or fucked off if they didnt. It is the turning around and criticising the club which speaks of their little mindedness and is the source of a sour taste within Arsenal and glee outside.

Apologies to those who dont think like that, but joined the club in that period. As seen by those “Been a supporter for 20 years, not buying this season’s ticket” types, you can be immature at middle/old age too.

  10. You’ll do for me Mel. A lovely ideal.

I’m a supporter since 94 and from the North East, I’d be devastated if I wasn’t classed as a supporter. Saying that there are the few supporters I gladly look up to and bow to their knowledge.

As long as someone can find positives in the club and have valid reasoning behind a differing (negative) opinion, I’ll tolerate. If people seem to have an agenda or have gone to far into negativity that they can’t enjoy the achievements of the club, well, I no longer class them as ‘Supporters’.

It would be great if we could all pull together but that rely’s on positivity. I doubt when you were bending the ear of the elderly statesmen you were banging on that the team, manager and directors where a bag of shite and needed booting. It’s difficult to put your arm around that attitude and persuade them otherwise.

George’s plight is a difficult one. He could very easily to be seen as an instigator (often is I think) and in the circumstances does amazingly well to keep knocking back the negativity succesfuly. The vast majority of the time I have the same feelings on things, while I role my eyes were Goerge rolls his sleeves. I’m happy he’s fighting the good fight but sometimes wonder if he’s just on a hiding to nothing.

What would happen if we won trophies and the same plastic fans took all the joy from it they could, without a word of apology for everything they thought wrong with the club. I’ll put my bloody mortgage on the fact that George and the rest of us will take exception. The thing is with that, we’ll then be the angry blokes in the corner. That’s what keep my head down. I’m just looking forward to making a good hundred or so smug bastard tweets when we lift that inevitable trophy.

  14. Classy, very classy Mel and dead right, in my view. Whether you are one of the newer fans from, say, Indonesia or the older ones from closer to Arsenal’s home, it’s a wonderfull, big and diverse family.

And talking of Indonesia, a delightful warm up for our boys tucking seven away in front of an 88,000, no doubt thrilled and fully appreciative crowd. Got to see a couple of my favourite youngsters – Gnabry and EIsfeld to name two, but the whole side looked pretty sharp and Giroud in particular was in the thick of things with a couple of goals and an assist.

    Great start to the tour.

And nice earlier to see England putting Australia firmly in their rightful place in the cricket.

You won’t make a tosser like that see sense. It’s probably too late in his case. He’s no doubt proud of those words. With twatter and whatnot, some wear their ignorance like a badge of honour.

Every club is “blessed” with them.

I know you’ve had you’ve had your differences with his Bobness, but by fellow gooners, he wouldn’t include arseholes such as that. Any who could say something like that, has nothing to do with “us”. I don’t blame you for fighting the good fight though..

Bloody good day though eh? First we teach the Aussies how it’s done, then, as ‘Coll said on t’other site, Arsenal do a Harlem Globetrotters. I’ve had worse weekends (insert banned smile…yadda yadda yadda)

  25. I totally agree Mel. I do not care about plastic, I only want fans who care about the team, and recognise the monumtal achievements of Arsene Wenger, of course the club was great before Wenger, but its a far more important club now under his leadership (yes I do mean he IS the leader in every sense), and after him, it may become even Greater because of the foundations built for 17 years.

I used to be a 2 or 3 home games a season visitor to the Ems,
Travelling from Dublin isn’t cheap, but me and hundreds of other Irish gooners do the trip most weeks. The plane is full of us, not many other London club shirts on the plane.
And there are dozens of planes ever Saturday or Sunday morning.

Well this season I tried to get over as many times as I could afford or get tickets for, and when I was in the Ems I shouted and shouted my support for the club, team, and yes, the manager from kick off to final whistle. I felt that was the least I could do in support of the team during this fake crisis being perpetuated by the enemies within the ground.

In the 7 years I’ve been going to the Ems I can proudly say that The Arsenal have never lost. A few close calls though, as you’d expect.

My first ever game at Higbury was in 89/90 when we won 1-0 against charlton, I couldn’t see a thing of the game from the old north bank terrace, but I just loved being one of the crowd. scary considering what happened at Hillsborough.

    And finally
Ramsey is like ZiZiu! I said it first!

  35. Well said Mel. You haven’t written for us in a while…you were saving it up weren’t you?

I skipped church this morning, dialed up a dodgy stream thanks to Shotta (how do you guys live with this streaming shit?), and watched my boys look lively in Indonesia. Then after it was over, I got on Player and watched it again. I am so fired up about this team. I don’t care who we bring in, Arsene will decide that. This is a TEAM, and I can’t wait to watch them tear up the league.

Predictably, on twitter I’ve seen there was moaning that because we won 7-0, then Wenger won’t spend any money, and we will be terrible and won’t win any trophies. F**k off. You miserable human beings are a waste of air and taking up space on the planet. Nothing in life will ever be enough for you. George is right about you. Now, I don’t put every fan who criticizes in that category, not by a long shot. But if the shoe fits, then jump off a cliff in it. Up the Arsenal!

As far as I know there is no “one” definition that I can find to state what a supporter is. Only the following.

    1. One that supports, as a structural member of a building.

    2. One who promotes or advocates; an adherent:

    3. An athletic supporter.

    4. Heraldry An animal or figure that supports a shield in a coat of arms.

5.But then we have another version of support as in a bra or jockstrap, which some supporters fall into this fifth category as they are a “TIT” or full of “Bollocks”. We all come across those who fall into the fifth category from time to time, so from now on just refer to them as a jockstrap. Or, over the shoulder boulder holder, as in you are a big tit.

On another note I hope we kick on this year and mount a sustained challenge for that league title.
