The Bradyesque7 Weekly Round-up

This week I shall attempt to stretch news until it is unrecognisable. It will be thinner, it will be weaker and, most of all, it will be brief.

First up is a brand new feature called ‘Embarrassing Dads’. Wojciech Szczesny’s father spoke to a member of the press to complain about the treatment of his son at Arsenal. He implied that Szczesny junior’s poor run of form was down to the manager and that he had played through injuries to help the club. Wojciech was quick to distance himself from the comments and is believed to be refusing to come out of his room. There is now a stand-off in the Szczesny household with threats of pocket money being withheld. This one has the potential to run and run.

In the absence of any first team action, many eyes were fixed on the U-21s and their tie against Manchester United. Conor Henderson was on set-piece detail and cracked the bar with a free kick from distance. (I may use that exact term later in the post.) Arsenal were a goal down but very briefly as the Irish midfielder drew level with a thumped penalty after Hector Bellerin was brought down in the box. Bellerin continued in this attacking vein and went on to pinch the winner in the 90th minute. A cross from Henderson was knocked to the edge of the box and the right-back smashed it home. 1-0 and you F*%&ed it up!

Next came Carl Jenkinson’s interview. The young full-back stated that he will fight to earn himself more caps, having been left out of England’s squad this time around. Jenks turned his back on his mother’s native land of Finland to play for England. Mrs Jenkinson is said to be unimpressed by this and has begun talks with Maciej Szczesny about how best to deal with the situation.

Abou Diaby spoke to Arsenal player about his newfound relative fitness and the measures he’s taking to ensure it lasts. He attributes his new staying power to dietary changes. It will take a lot of discipline and mental strength for Abou to continue the new eating plan to prevent another flair up of his chronic rickets.

Theo Walcott was forced out of the England squad with a “minor groin/hip injury”. Whether this hampers the rest of Theo’s season remains to be seen. Tests have been carried out and one concerned physio called it “a very wide injury indeed”.

And finally, the NextGen series continued last night as Terry Burton’s U-19s took on The CSKAs of Moscow. The game was held at The Grove and there were several thousand in attendance. There was no score at the break but Arsenal were looking the most likely. Several players shone on the night with Yennaris, Gnabry and Akpom being particularly influential throughout. Another strong performance came from Thomas Eisfeld. The young German was on set-piece detail and cracked the bar with a free-kick from distance. (I told you.) The only goal came from an excellent run by Serge Gnabry who played a one-two with Bellerin and passed the ball coolly by the keeper and into the net. Arsenal will now play the semi-final against other Russian team in the competition, the highly rated Chelski of St. Petersburg.

That’s all for this week. Thanks for reading.

Up the Arsenal!

  3. B7: I suspect if you had some 1st team football to write about we would not benefit from that active, fertile imagination. Chelski of St Petersburg, indeed.

  4. Nice write up B7 in the flatlands of the international break – very pleased the youngsters had a success last night – great team spirit – they will grow

  5. Last night in London the Russian/Gazprom National team played at home in Chelski against The Brazilian Touring XI, as the Arsenal U21s also at home beat Moscow to book a SF against Chelski. Spooky.

  6. As one who has been reading the English satirical magazine Private Eye for four + decades, I have to say the B7 column has rapidly become one of my favourite columns of the week.

Indeed, Tuesdays full stop (or ‘period’ as our American friends will insist upon) is fast pushing Friday as one of my favourite days given that Steww Black on the radio is on the radio on Tuesdays.

Kudos also to any post that cracks in two ‘cracked the bar with a free-kick from distance’ lines.

Although this sort of thing looks easy, we all know it isn’t.

  7. Great write-up, bradyesque. Much chuckling.

And thanks for kind comments about me on the previous blog, ZP and others, means a lot coming from people I respect. I wasn’t ignoring you last night, I hadn’t read them. I was cooking as well as trying to watch the game and after finally getting my stream to work, I just concentrated on the game, didn’t read previous comments. If that makes sense.

  8. I also agree with ZP that FunGun should do a write up. Her comments are top class comments every time.

Not sure if Passenal would be up to it but the same goes for her.

  14. I agree, Andrew. For the same reasons, Tuesday also one of my favorite days, period. (See what I did there?) But will steww be on the radio tonight? Thought I heard he was ill. And here I’m on vacation and could listen at my leisure without having to try to pretend I’m working.

Ramsey was superb against Scotland. He played with such freedom and, dare I say, a bit of swagger I haven’t seen in a while. Marred slightly by that last minute where he switched his brain off and got punished for it, but overall a performance that made me smile. Slightly disappointed he got no mention, B7, but I’ll forgive you.

  16. I’ve no doubt Passenal would be up to it – whether she’s up FOR it might be another matter! But I’d love to read articles from both.

Alabama G – I’m under the impression Steww will have recorded tonight’s show as he was expecting to be away. Certainly will attempt the classic commentary on mute/radio streamed on manoeuvre.

Damn it, I’m disappointed in myself. How did Rambo get overlooked? I don’t want to predict the news but I give you a Rambo guarantee for next week. I’ll make something up if I have to. Wouldn’t be the first time.

  19. b7 another great perusal of a quite successful week (not happy that you used the word grove though). giroud, Ramsey and the ox all scoring utd and Moscow defeated. something you missed though Isaac Haydens progression , I might be a bit obsessive about this, but every review I read, names the same names, but none highlights the aforementioned. I might have now put the mockers on his career but I really think he is a talent.

  26. Interlull round up of sorts:

In the big glamour tie between France & Spain Nacho man came in for the hamstrung Alba, Koscielny getting the start for France after resting against Georgia. Bit of tiredness for Kozza after France chased the game for the last ten with ten, but he looked good and if injuries have plaugued him for half the season a good performance has got to be a boost, likewise for Nacho who doesn’t usually start for Spain. The Football gawds took mercy and Santi Carzola did not play, still that didn’t stop nacho nabbing himself a sweet assist for the Spanish Theo (Pedro) with the Tottnum ‘keeper palming a scuffed toe poke into the net. So sad. Speaking of the team that has never actually played upon White Hart Lane, charlatans on every conceivable level, I don’t look for these things, they are just there.., Bale failed to save his team and was limping for the last fifteen against Croatia. Time for another ‘plasma transfusion’ AVB! And I though Sol’s Creatine habit was excessive. What do they teach them in N17?

And probably Vermaelan played? Dunno. I’ve concluded that seeing as the previous or current dopey manager of Belgium played TV5 at LB on occasion that playing LB against normal players is not a big deal for Tommy. But against the elite, against proper teams playing the good stuff, then it is tricksy (I’m a football genius!). I hope he played at CB.
Per played the full game for Germany, with the German manager opting for Ozil Reus and Muller in attack. A surprise in my humble opinion to not choose to try out Podolski to replace his carthorse sorry I mean Gomez. It makes sense to me at with Poldi’s experience and at his age that the German manager should be selecting him as it would also be to Arsenal’s benefit! That is a possibly biased opinion, I blame these ruby & quartz goggles. Boo the goggles. A little opaque at times, yes, but they do look good.

  32. i read that plato, some ancient greek philosopher, is considered the most influential philosopher of the world. here is what he says about “opinion”

“opinion is the medium between knowledge and ignorance”

    &

    “knowledge is true opinion”

( from hubpages – expolre- education and science)
“This is a very intelligent phrase. Plato explains people form opinions based on their knowledge. People’s knowledge directly reflects the information that was retained. People are ignorant, because they don’t know everything and they try and form opinions. They are saying what they think, not what they know. Plato is correct, opinion is between knowledge and ignorance. ”

Plato again…. “True opinions are a fine thing and do all sorts of good so long as they stay in their place; but they will not stay long. They run away from a man’s mind, so they are not worth much until you tether them by working out the reason. Once they are tied down, they become knowledge, and are stable.” …. this is the reply to all those who call you akbs…..

and then i find gem after gem …make what you want of them in relation to the latest behaviours we see from our fans

“Man…is a tame or civilized animal; never the less, he requires proper instruction and a fortunate nature, and then of all animals he becomes the most divine and most civilized; but if he be insufficiently or ill- educated he is the most savage of earthly creatures.”…bingo !

on debate and discussions…ha ” The partisan, when he is engaged in a dispute, cares nothing about the rights of the question, but is anxious only to convince his hearers of his own assertions.”..ha ..ha..ha…”he dont know tactics..he plays midfielders as wingers….”..ha ha ha

such great application in modern human behaviours from this pluto

    then this guy …..
Marshall Mcluhan: “A point of view can be a dangerous luxury when substituted for insight and understanding.

and if youve made it this far, and as a token of appreciation i give you one epic mindfuck 🙂

“Socrates and Meno are discussing the nature of virtue, whether it is a form of knowledge, and whether it can be taught:

SOCRATES: So true opinion is in no way a worse guide to correct action than knowledge. It is this that we omitted in our investigation of the nature of virtue, when we said that only knowledge can lead to correct action, for true opinion can do so also.

MENO: That appears to be so of necessity, and it makes me wonder, Socrates, this being the case, why knowledge is prized far more highly than right opinion, and why they are different.
SOCRATES: Do you know why you wonder, or shall I tell you? – By all means tell me.
SOCRATES: It is because you have paid no attention to the statues of Daedalus, but perhaps there are none in Thessaly.
MENO: What do you have in mind when you say this?

Socrates: To acquire an untied work of Daedalus is not worth much, like acquiring a runaway slave, for it does not remain, but it is worth much if tied down, for his works are beautiful. What am I thinking of when I say this? True opinions. For true opinions, as long as they remain, are a fine thing and all they do is good, but they are not willing to remain long, and they escape from a man’s mind, so that they are not worth much until one ties them down by (giving) an account of the reason why. And that, Meno my friend, is recollection, as we previously agreed. After they are tied down, in the first place they become knowledge, and then they remain in place. That is why knowledge is prized higher than correct opinion, and knowledge differs from correct opinion in being tied down. (Plato, Meno 97b-98a, tr. G.M.A. Grube; Daedalus was an artist who made great advances in the production of lifelike sculpture, hence the legend that his works would come to life when no one was looking)

According to Plato, the thing which, when added to true belief, makes for knowledge is an αἰτίας λογισμός, which Grube has translated as “an account of the reason why” – more literally, “an account of the cause”. I haven’t studied this in depth, but it is of note that right before this section Plato says that anyone who has actually walked from Athens to Larissa has knowledge of the way from Athens to Larissa, whereas someone who relies on hearsay and conjecture (but is nevertheless right) only has correct opinion. However, walking to Athens to Larissa will not result in a person knowing why the way from Athens to Larissa is such as it is (presumably that would require historical and geological explanations). As a result, I wonder if Plato means “an explanation of the reason for this belief”. It is of note that Plato uses λογισμός, ‘account’, which is a close relative of λογός, the word Plato uses for a philosophical argument. (But don’t read too much into this – both are very common words, especially in Plato.)
So perhaps Plato thinks that one has knowledge if one has a correct belief and can give a reasonable account of the formation of that belief. <<<<< me: tra la la …..

  34. oh absolutely anicoll…though i wont be the one claiming that wenger has seen the true essence as i want to keep it as OBJECTIVE as possible…but he has certainly seen more and done more than those who want to CRITISISE his proven and educated and tested working methods.

though i have to say that wenger is spot on when he wants to educate the young players as early as possible and throw them in the deep end … .. “The most important part of education is proper training in the nursery.” that stoner plato said that too…

i dont know why, but i went past le grove this morning and my bludder nearly exploded in the office when i read fans suggesting shawcross and barton would make arsenal a better team …. i feel for wenger..he is like the scientist-explorer who shows a digital watch to the tribes of the amazon and they all chase him
