Bob the Blogger is “not worth two bob” and he is “nicking a living.” Neil Ashton may never live down this damning epitaph to his ignorance and bias (no matter how well paid and protected by his employers in the mainstream media) but I have no doubt about the accuracy of my findings after reviewing many of the hucksters parading as Arsenal bloggers.
Take for example those doing the Arsenal beat at espnfc.com. We can comfortably assume they are well remunerated, unlike yours truly and my colleagues at PA. We do this for free because of our love for the club and our hatred for the lies and mendacity of the rest of the media. They at ESPN are supposed to be professionals and thus do it for money and for that reason high standards are expected.
Not so for Tom Adams with a recent headline:
“Arsene Wenger’s worst season ever as Arsenal embarrass themselves”
Mark Ogden, their senior football writer, after Wenger’s complete triumph over those trying to get him fired, blogged this complete cockamamie:
His (Arsene Wenger) glory days as manager are now more than a decade ago, and the man who was once a visionary has been overtaken by a new breed of coaches such as Antonio Conte, Pep Guardiola, Jose Mourinho, Jurgen Klopp and Mauricio Pochettino.
It was less than a week ago I did D-Day At The Arsenal where I concluded there was no doubt Kroenke would rehire Arsene based on the following data:
| Yr | W | D | L | Pts | Lge Pos |
| 16/17 | 23 | 6 | 9 | 75 | 5 |
| 15/16 | 20 | 11 | 7 | 71 | 2 |
| 14/15 | 22 | 9 | 7 | 75 | 3 |
| 13/14 | 24 | 7 | 7 | 79 | 4 |
| 12/13 | 21 | 10 | 7 | 73 | 4 |
| 11/12 | 21 | 8 | 9 | 71 | 3 |
| 10/11 | 19 | 11 | 8 | 68 | 4 |
| 09/10 | 23 | 6 | 9 | 75 | 3 |
| 08/09 | 20 | 12 | 6 | 72 | 4 |
| 07/08 | 24 | 11 | 3 | 83 | 3 |
| 06/07 | 19 | 11 | 8 | 68 | 4 |
| 05/06 | 20 | 7 | 11 | 67 | 4 |
| 04/05 | 25 | 8 | 5 | 83 | 2 |
| 03/04 | 26 | 12 | 0 | 90 | 1 |
| 02/03 | 23 | 9 | 6 | 78 | 2 |
| 01/02 | 26 | 9 | 3 | 87 | 1 |
| 00/01 | 20 | 10 | 8 | 70 | 2 |
| 99/00 | 22 | 7 | 9 | 73 | 2 |
| 98/09 | 22 | 12 | 4 | 78 | 2 |
| 97/98 | 23 | 9 | 6 | 78 | 1 |
| 96/97 | 19 | 11 | 8 | 68 | 3 |
| 462 | 196 | 140 | 1582 | 3 |
I had hoped the table spoke for itself. Apparently I need to highlight the takeaways.
Despite all the sensationalist headlines about coming 5th and falling out of the top-four, it was in many respects a better season than 2015-16 when the club came 2nd:
- 4 more Points.
- 3 more Wins.
- 12 more goals Scored.
- A higher Goal Difference, 33 vs 29.
On the negative side:
- 2 more Losses.
- 8 more goals Against, 44 vs 36.
How did this 2016-17 compare to the previous years. I ran some basic statistics.
| Statistic | W | D | L | Pts | Lge_Pos |
| 2016-17 | 23 | 6 | 9 | 75 | 5 |
| Minimum | 19 | 8 | 11 | 68 | 4 |
| Maximum | 26 | 12 | 0 | 90 | 1 |
| Mean | 22 | 9 | 7 | 75 | 3 |
| Median | 22 | 9 | 7 | 75 | 3 |
| Std Dev (Pop) | 2 | 2 | 2 | 6 | 1 |
Readers do not have to be Math wizzes to understand that 2016-17, compared very well with the previous 20 years:
- Better than the mean and median for Wins and Draws.
- Equal to the mean and median in Points.
- Worse than the mean and median for Losses.
In any sphere of life, 4 out of 5 at 80%, is not an A but definitely a B+.
Another data point to consider, for 10 of the 21 years Arsenal amassed less than 75 points, coming at least 2nd on three occasions and no less than 4th. That was until this year when 75 points was for the first time only good enough for 5th. Yes, you read right. Arsene and Arsenal had 10 worst years point-wise. Did the mainstream media or Bob-the-Blogger highlight this? Hell no. They were too busy trying to con Arsenal fans into believing 16-17 was the worst season ever.
Ever since our form went tits up from January to March, as the full impact of losing Santi was felt, with Wenger switching and matching various midfield combinations, Bob-the-Blogger suddenly lost all the faith he or she never had. After the 3-goal defeat to West Brom in late March, almost all but Positively Arsenal were in total despair.
I went back to the data and our history of fighting back from behind in seasons past and did a blog titled Arsenal Will Revert To The Mean. Voila. 75 points. Right on the money. If I was a gambling man I could have made a killing. Further proof of the value of relying on the historical data based on Wenger’s consistency. The alternative is emotionalism and hysteria which, by the way, is a time honored guarantee of generating clicks.
Coming 5th was not because the Arsenal performed worse historically but due to the other 5 clubs being more consistent at the expense of the so-called smaller clubs in the League. Here is an amazing statistic about the growing disparity in results:
- 13 clubs amassed less than 50 points in 16-17 vs 10 clubs in 15-16.
Now journalism students during my time in college were excellent writers but re-known for math-phobia. However there is no excuse for paid pundits to write such absolute nonsense as Tom Adams and company. They at ESPN have terabytes of data at their disposal and interns who can do some analytics with their computer in a jiffy. But, as we are now increasingly aware, the media has a narrative to sell and when the data doesn’t fit it is simply ignored or distorted.
Unable to rebut Wenger’s absolute consistency over the past 21 years, senior writer Ogden has no other recourse but to trot out the old saw that more modern managers have surpassed the old professor. But none of this crop managing the other Big-7 clubs, with the exception of Klopp and Pochetinno, has been in their current position for more than a year. Ogden should be well aware that one swallow doesn’t make a summer. It is the consistency of performance over time that counts.
Or maybe Ogden suffers from memory loss. It is not so far back when Rafa Benitez, Andres Villas Boas, Martin O’Neil, Paul Lambert, Roberto Mancini, Manuel Pellegrini, Roberto Martinez, David Moyes and Louis Van Gaal were all brought into their clubs and hailed as the scourge of Wenger. Almost all have been sacked or demoted from big PL clubs since then. At the time they were supposedly more modern.
As I demonstrated last time I blogged, the so-called more “modern managers” are working at clubs who over the past 11 years have massively outspent Arsenal in the transfer market. It is only in the last three years have the financial restrictions on Arsene been lifted compared to the prior eight years. Clearly the modern managers are now enjoying this strategic advantage.
| W | D | L | Pts | Pos | Net Spend | Spend per Pt | |
| Man City | 224 | 89 | 105 | 761 | 5 | £869.03 | £1.14 |
| Man Utd | 265 | 83 | 70 | 878 | 3 | £481.09 | £0.55 |
| Chelsea | 259 | 88 | 71 | 865 | 2 | £329.31 | £0.38 |
| Liverpool | 224 | 104 | 90 | 776 | 5 | £252.23 | £0.33 |
| Arsenal | 236 | 102 | 80 | 810 | 4 | £170.15 | £0.21 |
| Tottenham | 205 | 104 | 109 | 719 | 5 | £132.78 | £0.18 |
All spending above in £millions
I won’t bore you my readers with the points I made earlier this week. But upon reviewing the table above, something struck me forcefully. It is evident that the three most dominant clubs in the PL over the past 10 years (Chelsea, United and City) are willing to pay at least £380,000 in net transfers for each point earned in the PL. City is at a ridiculous £1,140,000 net spend per point, essentially 6-times that of Arsenal’s. How much more on transfers is Arsenal and Stan Kroenke willing and able to spend to win the League?
Contrary to the nonsense spewed by Ogden and other bloggers, the data demonstrates Arsene can get more from each transfer pound; he is the most effective in the League. I would give anything to see the agreed transfer budget for this summer. If I was Conte, Guardiola or Klopp, I would be very concerned if Wenger is able to spend as much if not more than last year. Sooner or later he will eat up the gap in points.
In conclusion, I note a few well meaning readers on twitter have expressed the view that this blog is somewhat harsh on other Arsenal bloggers. I make no apologies. We are in a battleground of ideas. There is cut and thrust. In my opinion, for too long, we the good guys have, in the interest of getting along, allowed stupid, fact-free ideas to attach itself to the fanbase. Like a malignant cancer, such stupidity has grown and masticized into flagrant disrespect for Arsenal’s greatest ever manager. In my view we can only rid the fanbase of this tumor by exposing the agents to ridicule and scorn. Those who disagree have their own forum to respond to the unbiased data.
Thank you for reading and your feedback.
The other problem with Bob the Blogger is “NO, he can’t fix it – all he can do is go on and on and on and on about how miserable he is and whose fault it is he is so perpetually f******** miserable”

Cheers Shotts another great piece, firmly grounding the sensationalist crépe that gets flung around. Thanks for taking your personal time to put this all together, sure am glad you do! I hope plenty of people get to read this article of yours.
Im shocked that some journalists think that Klopp has surpassed AW? The mind loves its fiction, the journalists are secret novelists!? Theres something sick in the way the hacks play with people, but AW gives them a good fight for sure.If they got him out they would then build him to a mythical status. Sawdust Cesars?

I especially found the final paragraph of the entire superb piece of particular relevance and have noted previously how, following an upturn in the club’s fortunes, we are urged to ‘just enjoy the result’ without highlighting the bullshit factor that is invariably revealed in the same naked way an out-going tide exposes the shore.
So I’m going to just enjoy this article, and as already suggested, bask in the achievement of Shotta’s finest to date. In fact, I may set my computer to simply re-blog and retweet a link to it every time the Bullshit Factor threatens to overwhelm the senses.

If you were by any means as smart as you pretend to be, you would know a 95% probability is no guarantee. Of course you conveniently ignore the fact AFC hit the 21 yr mean of 75 pts which would usually result in 4th, which is within the standard deviation.

its time we stopped calling those who campaign for Wenger to be sacked as WOB, its time we called them for what the are,
ASB – Attention Seeking Brigade, its clear some do it for the twitter/aftv fame, the media interviews, the notion that they are experts on Arsenal,
or we could call them
TFB – Total Failure Brigade, after all some of them claim to have been running this campaign for 10-12 years, and yet only in the last week Wenger has signed a new 2 year deal, how much longer can we ignore their total failure.
of course we know that AFTV have a financial reason for their antics, Robbie has become a wealthy man of the back of slagging Arsenal, and his regular crew have become minor celebrities (although they think there is nothing minor about it, “loyal to my fan base” I think was a phrase used by one of them), and come on how many of us here would not consider playing the part to camera of an outraged demented Gooner, if we were too getting Free Match Tickets, Transport to away games, and a bite to eat, not to mention our egos massaged.
and just like AFTV, the bloggers know that their financial well being is in getting clicks, and the best way – as I was told at a former haunt of mine – was either Transfer Stories or Negative headlines, and best of all was a mixture of both. So don’t be fooled into thinking that all of the negative bloggers actually believe the bull that they spout, all most of them believe in is the clicks. LeGrove and ANR led the way and the other money seeking and/or attention seeking blogs followed suit.

Great read, as ever. Would you, perhaps, be willing to share your data for the last table? (i.e. net spend-to-points) No hard feelings if the answer is no, of course.
Could perhaps look into the same metric, but for the past 5 years, namely, starting with 12/13 and onwards?
Also, you get your transfer data from transfermarkt, correct?

Correction on the above airport photo, seemingly it was yesterday, and it was Nice Airport.
We have been linked to Nice midfielder Jean Michaël Seri, but Nice Airport is only a short drive to Monaco, and it would be unusual for Wenger and Gazidis to be doing transfer negotiations, when that is Dick Laws job, unless it is a massive deal, that would require the two big men of the club to get the deal done. Which would suggest that they could be there to try and get the Mbappe deal done.
Then again, maybe our CEO and our Manager are just great friends and are holidaying together.

i have seen since the season ended many post puting coq and giroud on the list of players we may likely ship out this summer. the only reason i can come up with is pure hatred and prejudice. coq is shoe in in our starting 11 if and when santi is fit. we are yet to see if xhaka and santi can pair. ramsey and xhaka are good together in the midfield but santi and coq are better for me. why anyone would rate elneny above coq is beyond me even considering the fact we lose elneny to africa nations cup every two years.
as for giroud, its pure madness. that he hasnt ask for a move despite not playing much is a credit to his person. we need to do everything to keep him as it will be difficult to replace him like for like.

But to be fair to Shotta these liars were telling their listeners that AFC can spend (in the loosest sense of the word ‘spend’) the same as Bunga Bunga or Real Mad when they never have (and never will). And that is not acceptable any more. EIE!

layksite I included Giroud on the list of likely players to leave, and explained that it was down to him stating that he could not afford to be the bit part players he was last season, 11 league starts despite scoring 12 league goals. Its world cup year, and he is at the moment France’s first choice striker, he can not afford to lose his place in their squad due to lack of game time, the french boss has stated publicly that Giroud’s place with France is at risk due to his lack of game time with Arsenal.
Also on Xhaka, I think that he has shown enough last season to suggest he will remain a first choice player next season no matter who his partner is, Ramsey or Santi. And at this moment in time we can barely begin to count on Santi, the latest being he looks likely to not return to playing till December at the earliest. That would mean 18 months out, for him, following up on the 9 months he missed before his current injury.
Coquelin looks like he is a squad player when everyone is fit, if he is happy with that, then fine, I would suggest if he leaves this summer, like Giroud, it would be his decision.

I see the usual Attention Seeking Brigade hissy fits after Wenger’s recent comment that although Arsenal are financially sound, we can not spend the sort of money that some clubs, such as the state owned Man city, can.
Two things on their responses,
1. what do the not understand about a Shareholders money, not belonging to Arsenal, and that Arsenal have to right to spend the shareholders money.
2. what do they not understand that no matter how many £billions Kroenke and Usmanov are worth, its not a patch on the wealth of the United Arab Emirates, which is the real owners of Man City.
and on the subject of hissy fits by the Attention Seeking Brigade, over Wenger comments, AW said that Arsenal have too large a squad of players as things stand, and that we need to cut the numbers, and we will add 2 or 3.
two things on the reaction to said comments
1. what do these attention seekers not understand about the 25 man squad rule, we have something like 34 players over the age of 21 on our books, that means we have to cut at least 9, just to bring the squad down to 25,
2. we have cut it by the same number again, over that 9, as the number of over 21 year old players we bring in this summer.

Why are people so intent on selling off our players? Every team needs solid back up players who can step in and do a job in case of injury, suspension, players in need of a rest or the team in need of a plan ‘B’. We will never be in a position to have 2 first 11 players in every position as the club does not have bottomless pockets. If the squad players are willing to take a fill-in role and the manager thinks they can be useful, let’s wait and see what he does before we push them out the door. As for Song, I think the interest of Barca went to his head. He was already playing regularly and a key member of the Arsenal midfield when he staged his rebellion to get out the club. Remind me how that worked out for him?

Wenger suggest the other day that there is a real possibility that we will stick with the 3 at the back formation next season. Currently we have Koscielny, Mustafi, Holding, Mertesacker, Gabriel and Chambers as our senior CB options. How do you all feel about that list, is it good enough quality wise, is it enough number wise, or is it a player too many with all six taking a place in our 25 man squad.
On the subject of the make up of our 25 man squad, how do you see the best make up of it, how many players for each position, if we say 2 players for every position, that leave 3 players for extra positions, 1 the third choice keeper, where do you have the extra men for, one in CM, one a ST, or is CM that important we need the two extra there.
of course our 25 man squad can be supplemented by as many u21 players as we like, but how many u21 players have we that right now can be considered ready for the first team.

passenal for me its not a matter of looking to get rid of needed players, as I said we can only have 25 man squad of players over the age of 21, that means if we are bringing in 2 or 3 new signings over the age of 21, we have to move on 11 or 12 players currently employed by Arsenal.
We know Sanogo is leaving, so that leaves another 11 or 12 who have to be off our books, be it sold or out on loan, before the start of next season.
we currently have 4 senior keepers – cech, szczesny, ospina and martinez, so we can afford to move one of them on.
we are bringing in kolasinac, so we can afford to move on a left back – gibbs or monreal, as nacho has been first choice, it would make sense to move gibbs on.
as I stated above we have 6 senior CB’s, the question is, enough or too many, can we afford to move one of them on.
with santi and jack having such injury problems, and rambo too, can we afford to keep all 3, can we afford to not have extra options in midfield.
Passenal what would the make up of the 25 man squad be if it was up to you, how many each position,
Passenal just think who would be your first 11 and back up 11 be, and then which 3 other players would you have in the squad. And then tell me who are the players surplus to requirements and what would you suggest we do with them, sell, loan or keep for training.

layksite, we are debating giroud cos the French manager has publicly stated that his place is in doubt cos he is not a regular started at club level. you correctly state that he played 40 times for us last season, but more than half of which – 23 – were as a sub. Something Giroud himself has stated is of no use to him.
I think everyone here at PA, rates Giroud very highly, and wants him to remain at Arsenal, and we hope he is content enough to remain with us for at least another season.
If Arsenal do manage to sign Mbappe, then Olly would certainly look to be further down the pecking order.

Certainly Money City wouldn’t mind having one or both instead of the ridiculously risibly priced mules that they’ve been washing through the laundrette. Within the 25-man squad, at least 9 must be Home Grown! The under-21’s can be listed separately.
Coquelin, Gibbs, Jenkinson, Macey, Martinez, the Ox, Rambo, Walcott and Welbeck, were the 2016/2017 season Home Growns.
Remove anyone of those players, and it must be an equivalent Home Grown.
