Amazing news coming out of the ECB this morning that because of several positive cases they will have to pick an entirely new team for the upcoming ODI against Pakistan.
As all safety rules are being thrown out the window (against Sage advice) it remains to be seen what impact this has on football.
Imagine just before a big game a team having to field an entire B on even youth side. It could prove very interesting.

Nice one Saka, an assist to get England back Into the game, and ultimately, help towards a place in the final, England’s first for a little while.
We shall see What happens , Italy are extremely serious opposition, the best team so far, if a little fortunate against a resurgent Spain, but you never know, hopefully, Arsenals own will be firmly placed in England football folklore come Monday morning

Although England were the better team I thought they didn’t play well and were fortunate in the way they went through.
When the Danes were bringing on players from Brentford and Fulham and we were bringing on players from Liverpool, Man city and Athletico Madrid the difference should of been greater.
As they then lost there best defender had a dogey penalty given against them, while there was a second ball on the pitch, which was initially saved and then finishing the game with only ten men due to injuries you have to wonder how the pundits and press thought England were so good.
I would say I can’t see us getting passed the Italians but after the luck we have had in this tournament so far it’s extremely possible.

so Arthur Okonkwo has signed a new 3 year pro deal with Arsenal and has been officially promoted to the first team squad as 3rd choice keeper, so Leno No.1, Okonkwo No3, as things stand Runnarsson remains No.2 keeper

so according to a couple of the journos AFC feed stories to Arsenal are on the verge of rapping up the signings of the Anderlecht midfielder and the Benfica left back, both are said to have agreed terms and completed medicals, and could both be in our squad for the preseason games in Scotland this coming week

Hoping for some basic explanation here about the new signing, Nuno Tavares. Would the plan be for him to learn his trade here as back up to Tierney, and where does that leave Soares (or has he already been sold?).
And on a similar but to me more alarming note, who might be being lined up to replace Xhaka? Who will be targeted to replace Odegaard? And might there be any attempt to find an out and out striker?

I see former Arsenal striker and sometimes CB, Paul Mariners has died, he had brain cancer.
on a side note to his sad passing, I seen more than one guy who would constantly say Giroud who scored 105 goals in 253 games, was shite for us, yet say Mariner who scored 17 goals, in 70 games was great for us

I was really shocked and sad to read that Ed. I saw him play many a time. I always had the feeling it didnt quite work out for us after he came from Ipswich, (but his goal/game ratio looks better for us than them?) and he was a big star at Ipswich, but that was a period in our history when it didnt seem to work out for many.
How often does Tony Woodcock ever get mentioned or any of those players from that period before GG? Looking back it seem the time that Arsenal forgot?
Does anyone recall the strange goal he scored against Hungary where he kind of tripped/fell onto up the ball and scored?
Anyway, really sad to see the news, but thanks as always Ed for being the PA media watchdog,

Paul came at a time when we’re very poor although his stats for us don’t look fantastic he was still an important player.
Players in different sides make different impacts there are many players who have won league titles with us that didn’t have the same effect on the side as Paul and Tony.

It was a difficult time when Mariner arrived. We were rebuilding after the loss of Macdonald Brady and Stapleton and the next generation of Davis Rocastle Thomas Mersin Hates and Quinn were yet to emerge

Thanks Ed – would personally find it very difficult if we sign Maddison. I spent most of last season bad-mouthing him every time (which seemed like all the time) he was doing those ‘fresh-faced-chirpy lad from next door, wouldn’t your Gran just love him’ interviews as part of the whole LCFC media love-in, so to have to turn round less than a year later and treat him like the second coming is a bit of a stretch.
Such, I suppose is the lot of the fan – he says, before searching you tube for compilations of Lokonga (and Maddison).

My impression of Madison is he seems a top class talent but just doesn’t want to work for either himself or the team, I could be wrong.
If the cost is 70 million and Ben White is 50 and we are also looking at another midfielder where are we getting all the money from.
Unless we are paying in installments of 1 million a year for 70 years I can’t see how the maths work out even with the sale of half the squad.

The Copa American winning keeper looks alright.
I might be going out on a limb here, dangling over the edge, but I don’t have the greatest confidence in those who replaced Martinez with Runoffasquickasyoucanson, or Ozil with Willian, or Ramsey with Gunedouzi etc.
For any fan of any club that would be a nightmare of a record.
And the inability of the Arsenal Blaggers even highlight this decrepit consistency has obliterated whatever remained of credibility.

The blaggers/PR reps spent two seasons saying that number tens don’t have a role anymore to justify the idiocy of the people running the club but Gareth ‘Conservative’ Southgate had two on the pitch at one point for England in the semi final.
The best thing about this tournament apart from the Football is that from Xhaka through to the tactics and formations it has all underlined that these Arsenal Blaggers know sweet FA about the Football.
If Southgate has his Deschamps moment tonight as rumoured and twitched into a back five whilst dropping Saka I hope it doesn’t backfire and that he’ll have the time to use his subs wisely. Could also be a rumour to throw off cunning opponents
Still looking good on those odds for Saka to (come off the bench and) score the winner.

How can an international team only win only 2 of The last 9 pen shootouts?
That surely defies the law of averages.
Southgate showed cowardice in that game, sat back on an early lead and tried to copy Greece . England needed inspiration, they got Pulis.
Fair play to Saka for stepping up after Southgates sending on 2 players bought on 1 min into the game to take penalties though , and credit to the players who got them to a final
Yes Southgate got to a final, and further than some very talented sides, but if England are ever to prevail, the FA need braver managers

Gutted for Saka though I washed Italy to win.
Hope he gets all the support he needs from his family and friends and especially from Arsenal and us Arsenal fans.
What on earth made them ask a 19yr old in his first international tournament to take the 5th penalty. I mean this is England. The amount of pressure with having not win anything for so many years etc etc.
Crazy.

Just some thoughts, not absolute truth or perfect 20/20 vision, all form the ivory tower:
Too much pressure?
I thought Saka would have enjoyed more play if he had started, and maybe Foden on later? The game was more open for a player like Saka in the 1st half, the Italians seemed to have the suss on him as the Danes did: keep him with his back to the goal and just crush him out and dont let him breathe. Poor kid. Ive hated penalties since 1980, its a dogshite way of settlnig things. Sad thing was my instinct said before hand that he would miss.Ive no idea what Rashford was doing with his penalty, he became conscious of whats going on, and in football if you do that youre knackt.But Im sure I would have missed too under all that pressure.
What shocked me was how England went to pieces after the goal, it took them a long time to gain any kind of control again.
I thought Kane was mildy better than in other games, Sterling less so, Rice looked good and wanted to score and finish the game off and in hindsight maybe all the subs were a total disaster.
Shame about the booing of other countries national anthems, and not staying afterwards ( at least in 96 the stadium remained full and supportive). UEFA makes a big deal out of respect and equality, yet the whole competition stirs up Geopolitk and historical grudges? Perhaps as Alvy Singer said “theres too much emphasis on the orgasm to much up for other duller areas?”. Is that all footballs been reduced too, a big orgasmatron machine?But going off in a sulk ( like I did) shows a lack of dignity, and without dignity what have we got?
After every game we have to see the agony and ecstasy of the players as they linger onn the pitch ( except Ronaldo who slung his hook pretty quick), Im sure AFTV will be doing slo mo after the games of Mr DT and chums in those emotional states slowed down to the Riefenstahl horsehshit of what heroes they are?
I liked Southgates presser, and the way he took the blame, other managers/coaches have been ranting at their players.
Obviously from this point the idea of the WC next year is pretty sickly, the idea of listening to the three lions song just seems irritating ( as if it wasnt ever?), but maybe once the seasons under way and the dark nights get everyone dow a trip to Qatar might seem alright?
But Italy were a tough side, they booted out a lot of good teams, and fought like devils, and underneath is a confidence that has no fear of any team and isnt frightened to be champions.And Mancini is an old fox who has his eyes open as he showed in the 2nd half.
But, England went to a final, and played for me, in the game of the tournament versus Germany, surely that was pretty good?Even if we created the rules and see it as the home of organised football and we have great domestic leagues,we arent entitled to anything, all has to be earnt. After the WC next year many stars will be gone and football will slowly be moving onto new chapters, Austria, Hungary and Denamark,the Ukranaians all showed massive improvement and will learn form what played out?
It always irritates me as its so true, but everytime theres a competition, my partner says; “all the teams, and fans celebrating and yet only one will not feel pain!”.
Lets face it its was painful, maybe the worst since the CL final as we will always feel it could have been avoided.Can you avoid pain in life?
I wished that we could have collectively shown more dignity in losing and enjoy the journey a bit more? But maybe thats not the way anymore, or at least in this time?
Anyway, fk it, on we go to the road to Hibs…

I can excuse a defensive coach having a ticket in a final.
If a WC winning coach like Deschamps can go too defensive and have an ostrich moment then so can Southgate.
What I won’t excuse is choosing a rookie teenager to take the most important kick in the nations recent football history when he has never taken a penalty at a senior level let alone 60,000 fans in England’s first final since 66. Trying my best to be fair that was a disgusting call from Southgate. He had the better players. He lost the match. And after that abrogation of his duty and responsibility towards these players as people: He has no excuses.
Karma is a b****: The English FA and as a result English football fans are paying the price for what they did to Clough.
How long will the Arsenal suffer for their treatment of Wenger? As long as Newcastle have wilted after their treatment of Robson? Football is an unforgiving lover.
Break any of the Golden Rules, needlessly blow up a boot room and a great club for the benefit of a few frauds, and the Sport won’t forgive you.

In many ways it was the earliness of the goal that was England’s undoing. They were very good for the first 30 mins or so, but as the Italians made adjustments and seemed to strengthen their midfield the side seemed to run out of ideas and hope to keep lumping the ball forward to Kane. Theoretically having reached half time the stgage should have been set for a defensive masterclass and then a quick break to secure a comfortable 2-0 win. I am sure that was what the manager would have been emphasising. But imagining the English dressing room at the interval I was reminded of the moment in Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men when the dream of the men to buy their own land suddenly seemed in reach:
‘They all sat still, all bemused by the beauty of the thing, each mind was popped into the future when this lovely thing should come about.’
And I think that was the moment when they lost focus, stopped living in the moment and doing the right things (which they had done so well throughout the tournament), but instead fixed their gaze on the prize. I don’t think they were afraid to win, but perhaps they suddenly wanted to win too much.

Yes, he gets England to the latter stages, but he made the same mistakes as he did in the WC semi, ie stopped his team playing , it doesn’t work , those players aren’t Greece and aren’t really designed for that
