Was The Community Shield a Shopping Window For The Arsenal?

New podcast: Reading the tea leaves and connecting the dots, me and the Arseblagger explore whether the Community Shield was a shop window for the Arsenal. Who is on the chopping block? Maitland Niles, Martinez, Bellerin, even Aubameyand? Does Mesut Ozil have a future at the football club?

We refuse to fall for the narrative being spun by the club and its usual mouthpieces in both mainstream and social-media. (They shall remain nameless.) We believe salable assets will be sold regardless of what Arteta and Edu say or do.

I’m hearing that a mixed first/reserve team friendly is being played at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday – opponents unknown at present.

I do know, also tomorrow, that the U18s have a friendly against Brentford at Hale End.

  7. I really liked look of Ballard at youth level and was gutted last year wiped out for him. Seems N Ireland big fans of him, too, as he’s in for debut from start tonight.

Realistically, don’t know how can happen here with two new young cb’s, but I just hope somehow he might force his name into frame. Guess it would take a truly great loan to really make club sit up, plus him being more willing than most to hang in and see if chance opens up.

  8. Seeing praise for Ballard on twitter. Played 90 in very good result with 10 men. But, according to NI twitter…went off injured in injury time.

Just have to really hope it’s something small and result of playing what must easily be biggest game of career after only 2-3 U23 appearances in a year because of knee injury.

No way would any club use a young player in that way, but these things happen in international football.

  9. Its confirmed that Dani Ceballos has rejoined us on another season long loan.

    so summer signings so far

    Mari
    Soares
    Willian
    Gabriel
    Ceballos

we also have Saliba in for his debut season after joining last summer but loaned back out
So we’ve signed a right back, 2 CB’s, a midfielder and a forward signed so far.

  11. My memories of last season are a bit hazy and confused. I can remember quite clearly the first bit: early hope with new signings, disappointment and then apathy, hope again with Freddie and then Arteta’s appointment. But I don’t remember the pre and post lock down bit very clearly – what happened when, which bit was which etc. So what I don’t really have a clear view on is Dani Caballos and whether his reloan is a good thing. I do remember people seemed quite excited about him this time last year, but then he sort of seemed to fade. Could clearer minds than mine give me a steer on this, please?

  12. Dani C suffered with an injury, and then under Emery’s general confusion, and I suspect players losing confidence, or perhaps even in some cases, giving up on the hapless manager, but he seemed to pick up towards the end of the season and after lockdown, and especially impressive in some of the FA Cup games leading to the final.
A little hard to judge him with such a truncated season, but Arteta certainly seems to rate him, not sure Emery really did, perhaps still longing for Banega or someone.
Arteta has improved the performance of a few players after his unfortunate predecessor, Dani is certainly one of them . Let’s hope he has a blinder next season, and it propels him to become a regular for Spain, as this seems to be a key motivation for him

  13. Thanks Mandy: hadn’t really clocked his injury. Well, good luck to him and us. And on another but related issue: if I see photos of Ozil training on the website (one in particular with him next to Willian), might there be grounds to think he could be back in MA’s thinking?

  14. Yeah Dani started really well and looked class although suffered the usual first PL season problem of getting caught on the ball. Certainly seemed like he regressed under Unai but got his confidence back under Mikel . At times he has touches of Santi about him but in his second season will have to release the ball quicker or be stronger and clever to retain it.

  25. looks like Xhaka was pretty amazing for Switz against Germany, getting a lot of plaudits.
of course that will come as no surprise to us on here, but what a player we have. Oh Unai, what a complete disaster you were.

  27. on Xhaka it is still amazing the amount of critics he has, but I do think that one of the reasons for this from many of them is that they still seem to think he is a defensive midfielder, just cos he is positioned close to our area. They haven’t a clue about what a deep lying play maker is, they also do not know what tactical fouling is, and I would bet that most of them who are critical of Xhaka were also critical of Arteta when he played for us. Oddly a lot of them are massive fans of guendouzi.

  28. Yes, have read the Swiss were the better team.
Think Xhaka wore number 10 for Switz, only a shirt number, but correct, he isn’t a trad DM like Carlton Palmer and shouldn’t be seen as such, Xhaka is a modern, extremely clever player well beyond such roles.
No disrespect to Auba, but still see him as the teams skipper . Glad Arteta sees him for the wonderful player he is

  29. Still think it’s one of most revealing snapshots of our football ecology you’ll ever see the way Phil Neville went in on Xhaka- ‘I’m not having him’,etc.

Showed Neville to be the colossal plonker he is, but also the way foreign players are treated differently by our pundits, the way narratives take hold of brains, and, most of all, the way Arsenal players are treated differently again.

Think Xhaka may be in best form of his life at moment, or even have actually improved as a player. Got a feeling he has increased how much he uses right foot in his time with us, something I always love to see and take as an excellent sign of a player’s intelligence, courage and desire to improve (can’t help but compare to Gibbs in that situation).

  30. Pretty sure I got no allies on this one here but I still rate Guendo by way.

Not an easy case, maybe impossible, to sway anyone’s thinking, given I have no stats to support me, and the team wasn’t particularly successful in results or style while he played, and Arteta, who I and probably everyone here likes and trusts, must’ve fallen out with him in big way.

I just thought/think he’s a good player. Not itching to see him re-integrated, largely because it seems sure he’s done, but for other reasons, too. More a case of being uncomfortable with exit on grounds I think he will improve and end up a top player, and a little dismayed that circumstances mean it will almost certainly be on the cheap.

The wait continues, with no end in sight, for one of those transformative bonanzas from a sale. Worst time for one fo them, admittedly, and guendo perhaps not a good candidate for it anyway.

  31. Think Gwen has a lot of potential, and have seen him play some decent games. Emery seemed to love him, but didnt know how to use him, this manager managed to confuse most of the team including Gwen.
Arteta is clearly harder for him to win around than Emery, he will clearly have to knuckle down and improve a reportedly bad attitude. He is tenacious, talented considering his age, and good energy. If he stays with us, there are worse players to be stuck with, as long as he curbs some of his reported sides to him, and I am sure quite a few that are unreported. Dont think Arteta fools easily in general, and especially with MFs, but he has shown there is a way back in if things improve to his standards
