Andy Nic chose a very good weekend to visit the D Day memorial in Normandy.
Even his cultured prose would have had problems with this game. As Steww mentioned in his preview regarding fans’ superstition of travelling North of Watford after a Euro game: “The best we can hope for is to survive and nick the points…”.
By the way, where did all those virgins go Steww?

Having watched most of our ‘1-0 to the Arsenal’ games it is no lie to say that this was probably the closest finish we’ve experienced, with no time to even kick off after Kos’s winner… or was it Ox’s winner? Whatever it was, it must be termed our scrappiest goal of the season and Burnley supporters will argue that off-side and/or hand-ball should have been called.
Incorrect of course, it was 1-0 to the Arsenal and that is never wrong.
No changes to the side from the Basel game, bar Petr coming in for Oosp, but we definitely saw a change in tempo. Perhaps a return to planet Earth was due and the stygian gloom of the North-West would not have helped. For sure we seemed to be playing at half the pace seen during the previous eight days and it took us some fifteen minutes to acclimatize.
Even then, it was noticeable that our midfield was a bit heavy-legged, nobody doing much wrong but having nowhere near the control that we’d previously shown. Fortunately our back line was working well and despite a couple of chances were holding Burnley at bay. The Koshodra partnership was very sound as was the covering for any defender caught upfield. Petr made some good saves when needed, one particularly special in the second half.
Up front, Alexis was running around like the butcher’s dog but not getting the reward his energy deserved.
He’s such an unselfish player and had a few shooting possibilities that were laid off to others. Time to get the selfishness back Alexis? You did that on Wednesday as well trying to give Theo his hat-trick.
Theo’s good work in defence continued. He really has improved in that area. Pity that his shooting let him down, as was the case with Oz. Theo however was responsible for the header that led to our goal so he can be forgiven.
Oz just had an offish day.
Now for yet another interbloodynational break …
Let’s hope all the guys called on come back fit and ready to eat some roast swan.

in 82 and 83 arsenal gave lots of our youths their first team debuts, it was the end of Neill’s time, and the start of Howe as manager, the team was struggling and we threw youths in at the deep end, with many only getting a game or two before being dumped, then we struck on a fine batch of them, Adams, Keown, Rocky, Thomas, Gus, Hayes, Quinn etc

Burnley had only conceded four goals in seventeen games at home. Now imagine having to play one of the best bus parkers in the league after a mid-week CL tie. The WOB tacticians need to sit the fuck down.

Gains another thing I think has been overlooked was Ozil and Alexis thinking on their feet at the corner, and how this threw Burnley’s defense for the goal, they surely expected with time almost up, AFC would pump the ball into the mixer as quick as possible, but we took a short corner, and all of a sudden their defense was all over the place, Kos and Ox and I think one or two more all got in at the far post for theo’s flick on.

I was obsessed with Arsenal at that time, and always liked seeing young lads come through the ranks, so lots of players who did not make it here, still stick in my mind.

It was a interesting time Ed.Maybe the time forgotten the most at the moment-after the Cup Finals and then those players leaving etc and later when GG turned up and things started picking up.The moaners wouldnt have liked those days!
RIP Don Howe, I liked him and he was a great mind of football and did our club a great service.

Howe was a true club legend, and it was wrong the way Dein fucked him about, especially with the FA Cup 5th round second replay, Arsenal had drew the game at Luton – who had the artificial pitch – 2-2, then the replay was also a draw at Highbury 0-0, and with the second replay due for a neutral venue, Dein took it upon himself to go for a toss of a coin with a luton director on the second replay, and lost, so it was back to the artificial pitch, Arsenal lost 3-0. Howe was furious with Dein for this. And even suggested that Dein done it to help push him out. Howe resigned when he found out Dein had held meetings with Terry Venables about the Arsenal job.
David Dein has this almost hero worship from some Arsenal fans, but from my viewing, he was no saint and only what he wanted mattered to him. He also acted the goat on Rioch

would add on howe, that him coming back to work in the Academy, after the way he had been treated when manager, showed his love for Arsenal.

Ed, I was at the 2-2 game with Luton and the pitch was a nightmare. The artificial pitches then were all different and each had a different bounce. I was also at quarter pound of rubbish’s last game with their artificial pitch when all the ARSENAL fans ran on and started trying to rip it up although that was a few years later.

Sorry didn’t want to tweet this but it’s pi@@ed me off all day. After yesterday’s game a Burnley fan, with his wife and child said……I hope your family die. He repeated again in front of his family and a steward, who completely ignored it. Unbelievable.
