Arsenal won a great game of football yesterday.
Of course if you read twitter this might come as a shock to you. Apparently they didn’t do it with the assurance and panache that many uber fans demand. Clearly we should dominate the game from start to finish and not let the opponents have a kick of the ball in their own back yard.
The total lack of understanding that these halfwits on twitter display is a never ending frustration to me.
In the first half we were dominant and created many opportunities, scoring twice without reply. We were not at our scintillating best, for sure, but would you expect that ? It was our fourth game in 14 days and our 3rd away game in that period. And we won them all.
The game changed early in the second half when the hosts scored a goal with the help of some good play on their part and some sloppy play on ours.
What happens in these circumstances is the home crowd go berserk, the home team find an extra yard and start playing with freedom and flair. Why? Because that is how it works. They would have felt the game was lost, All of a sudden they are back in it. Tails are up, caution thrown to the wind. They are the home team after all. They are entitled to have a go .
The problem yesterday was that we were unable to take back control. The tanks were empty. So………. we had to hang on and defend.
Its almost like Arsenal are the only team that are not credited for being resolute in defence.Other teams win while not at their best and are hailed as great teams. Arsenal do it and its the players being crap and the manager being unable to motivate them. Double standards much !
I watched that game. What I saw was a home team putting in a fantastic performance in the second half against a very leggy opponent.
Its was a great 3 points and under the circumstances, a good performance.

Well done, Danny Welbeck.

International games are not totally useless. First time I sat up and took note of Welbeck was when he scored a backheeled goal in the middle of a summer tournament. Not just another Slurgussian Clogger (or Diver if we’re talking about forwards) was the thought at the time.
And again we saw last night that the energy and enthusiasm he has when fully fit bounding all over the pitch is greatly appreciated by many. Zimpaul was right, of course he was: as long as Rooney had a player like Welbeck around to put in most of the work he could still survive at the very top top levels , heh. Poor Wayne was probably almost as upset at Welbeck being sold as Danny himself.
He might not be a hundred per cent for Liverpool, fingers crossed. If not the Arsenal could always line up as they did against City, a daunting midfield with Özil pushing up. Tough times at The Arsenal eh? As Sports Direct take out lawful injunctions of fans of the club that was once the third odd biggest football club in the land it becomes more and more clear that the bin dippers meme that used to attack the club for several years, that it was the worst board/owner in Football was at best (I’m trying to be kind) an act of serious stupidity. But we know it wasn’t that. So many mules and donkeys in the game, so few sticks with which to beat them.

That’s interesting apparently I am someone who just wants to tarnish the name of ARSENAL. Well I never thought I would be accused of that on here but I guess some people will never separate general wrongdoing from an attack on something they love. I can understand that but it doesn’t make it right and like I have said I’ve spoken to people like Mark Gonella who obviously know the score.
But anyway back to the football, John cross has said Danny had tweaked his knee so lets hope he is fit to play next week and the rest of our international players all come back safe and sound.

I know it’s not Arsenal, but watching the Brasil/Chile game today was interesting. I loved the pre-match atmosphere – it was like a party in N7, shame we don’t get even half of that for AFC. And post match, the Chileans were partying outside the Northbank like they had just won the world cup despite the defeat. It’s a shame football isn’t more often like that – take the rough with the smooth and just enjoy it for the game that it is. As for the match, it was entertaining enough, but if it’s not Arsenal, the buzz is just not the same. Neymar is annoying – I preferred the 17 year old version I first saw at the Emirates a few years ago than this one who falls to the ground looking for a foul at every opportunity. I was glad Atkinson finally called him on it. Also, why does he not call every PL match like that? Today he was rightly calling fouls for things I know he would have let go in the PL. Alexis, like the Chilean team work very hard, but they lack a Mesut Ozil to bring a little creative spark to their play.

Things I have gleaned or discovered during the International Break.
Welbeck and Ramsey are injured, but I don’t know how badly.
Should they ever return to fitness they will be two of the most significant players in The Arsenal’s immediate and mid-term future.
Ozil is one of the best players in the world, but Andy Townsend would sooner start Harry Kane than him.
Gareth Bale is really, really good.
Raheem Sterling doesn’t really want to play for Liverpool any more.
Jack Wilshere has been air-brushed out of the pundits’ memory.
Theo Walcott senses for the first time in his professional life his career is slipping behind him rather than laid out gloriously in front of him.
That I struggle to find any fun when we don’t have games to look forward to.
That I shall miss the Cup Semi-final through work.

Well I prefer to see the glass half-filled than than half-empty. To my mind the niggles suffered by Welbeck and Ramsey could not have happened at a better time. There is a whole week ahead of them to recover. Shad can work miracles I am told.
The rest of the boys were in fine nick. King Larry was on fire yesterday despite every trick in the book used by Christian Kjaer and the Danish defense. Alexis was Alexis vs Brazil. Last but by no means least our master lockpicker, Mezut Ozil, keeps carving the tightest defenses open making a fool of the pundits and AAA who have been trying to undermine his contribution to our club.
Can’t wait for Liverpool.

Thanks Passenal.
I haven’t seen much of Vidal but that never stopped me from thinking that the younger Ramsey has looked like a vaguely similar style of midfielder at times albeit one with more goals to his game or name and maybe more too to come in the future.

I enjoy listening to former pros who aren’t petty plundits and these two eminent legends did not dissapoint. I’ve trawled the podcastateers so you all don’t have to for these nuggets:
Malcolm “Super Mac” MacDonald on his fellow “lump” Giroud and the Arsenal
Still no Paul Davis interview from the AFTV crew. I’m still waiting. As long as they continue to profess the belief that the self-publicating toxic Moron advising Kevin Pieterson is a genuinely genuine football fan then I’ll continue to question their intelligence.

I concur completely with Passenal’s remarks on the Brazil-Chile match. I took Little LSG because he wanted to see Alexis Sanchez and it has been difficult to find two tickets together to home matches recently. It wasn’t Arsenal but it was fun in the Emirates. The Chile supporters were fantastic the whole match and the general atmosphere was lively and celebratory. Ok, the crowd did the wave three times in succession around the stadium, but it’s an international friendly and at points the game wasn’t technically riveting, particularly because of Brazil’s tactics (33 fouls, 5 yellows, no Samba but some sparkle from Neymar when he wasn’t play acting and rolling around the floor or committing foul after foul himself while pretending he was the injured party–absolutely disgusting!). But, you wouldn’t have known it was a friendly from the attitude and performance of the players. Very intensely competitive and Alexis played the entire match at the intensity we see from him–he is such a superb player in ability and attitude. I really think Chile deserved more from the match.
Lots of gooners at the ground and mostly supporting Chile, I think. I would have liked to see Gabriel come on–Dunga could certainly have introduced him in the second half after the goal as one of the extra defenders he brought on and allowed the Gooner crowd to cheer him, but Dunga is just not that kind of manager. His Brazil is seriously miserable and I hope they stutter at the Copa America. Plenty of boos for Willian and Luiz Felipe–the Chelsea supporting Brazilian chap and his son behind us didn’t understand why.

At this point, PG, why not just wait for a Pool preview?
I just landed a ticket for the match, which has made me very happy. Hope to keep my string of 6 straight wins going. Anicoll, are you attending? I wasn’t quick enough online to score some from the Red Member allotment for Chelsea, though–kudos to you!

I have always liked Vidal since his Bundesliga days, but I wasn’t terribly impressed by his performance v. Brazil. Isla also was fine but not quite as sharp as needed. Tbf, this Dunga Brazil knows how to defend or at least foul at the right times. I think if Alexis had had a bit more support, Chile could have at least equalized. I thought they were much better overall.

So good you said it twice! I concur totally. As soon as I saw the pic on Arsenal.com I had to come straight here to people who would appreciate what a wonderful thing it is. I just hope he got through it okay with no setback. Even if he can’t do it with Arsenal, he deserves a chance to play the game he loves somewhere on some level. But from the match report, it sounds like he played a part in 2 of the goals.
