I just don’t see any movement out from Arsenal.
One mildly inconsistent season from TV is nothing, he’s superb and has the added advantage of being able to shift easily to LB if required by circumstances. I felt this season he must have been carrying some injuries worries or niggles.
I was a little disappointed in 3Gs, but I think AW will persist; although I wouldn’t be surprised if we looked at the left side in terms of any incoming or upcoming players. It’s such a crucial point of attack. Gervinho himself needs to work on adding to his game and much depends on how hard he works.
And I can’t really see Sagna leaving either.
Tomas has one more part-season left and extremely useful player to have on the bench, especially for the European games.
Diaby is a conundrum, too good to lose, too injured to keep. If he goes he will not be replaced, there aren’t any others like that. I think we will retain his services and be patient, depending on medical reports.
I do think Campbell will come with work permit, alongside Ryo; and that Eisfeld, Nico, and Miquel will be drafted upwards.
In terms of purchasing it’s open ended. A midfielder.

As for transfers, ZP is right, not much is going to happen. Maximum two signings in IMO. AW will only sign players better that what we have or have that potential. Enough to make the team better but, unlike last season, small enough to not to cause any major disruption as we build on acheivements. The transfer addicts will have a fit.

Agree with most of that. But regarding the young ‘uns I have a hunch Campbell will stay on loan, Eisfeld will go on loan, Sanogo (I’m jumping the gun, I know!) will play with the first team, as will Gnabry. Also I suspect that we are more likely to buy a striker than a midfielder – unless AW can find a clone of Diaby.

Fun, for me Ox has the exact attributes to become a striker, namely his speed, balance on the ball, attacking instincts/willingness to take on and beat a defender, but even more he has “presence” and physical strength. Although we don’t see it much, I’m told he has a good shot too. To me moves like a striker. Whether he has that calmness and ruthless eye for the split second opening is something else.
It’s true Gnabry could be fast-tracked. He appears (from the little I know) to be the one with the gift of the unusual. But as someone said, he tends to drift in and out of games.
There’s an article in the Guardian online today about “the numbers game” (stats) in football, the premise really popularized by Moneyball. To be honest it doesn’t say much, except for one thing. Statistically, the most successful transfers and their outcomes in team results concern strengthening weaker links in a team, and not the glory purchases. It made me think of Nacho as a case in point, and Arteta as another.

Could be interesting then, he’s certainly young enough to be converted. The chance conversion which is poor, but that’s common in young players.

– Hence I see any big transfers as strengthening midfield especially experienced cover for Arteta as Diaby’s return is questionable (* holding back the tears) and further up in the attacking third as we had difficulties scoring that extra goal to kill off teams. Just my two cents.

I’m glad I’m not the only one that has pictured the Ox as a striker. I think he’s very similar to the likes of Suarez, Tevez, Aguero and Rooney (in his younger, more explosive, days). A keen dribbler with pace to burn and a ferocious strike. Here is a bit of his shooting practice with the England U21s:

If we could only buy one player I would choose a midfielder. I dread to think how we would cope if Arteta had to miss a few weeks, or even months. I believe him to be the most vital component in the team. Ramsey has improved immensely and appears to be moulding his game on Mikel’s, but I’m not sure we have convincing options behind them. Diaby is unlikely to stay fit if his recent history is anything to go by, Jack seems to have begun a new phase of development as a more advanced player, and Coquelin appears out of favour.
In attack I would expect significant improvements from Giroud and Podolski in their second season as the chemistry begins to build. Wenger’s work with Poldi as a CF suggests he might become the main competition to Giroud for that position next season, with Theo, Gervinho, Sanogo as further options. With Cazorla, Rosicky or Jack at no.10 and Cazorla, Podolski, Gervinho, Chamberlain available on the left I don’t think we are short of numbers, quality or variety. There’s also a very talented group of young attackers waiting on the wings – Gnabry, Ryo, Eisfeld, Campbell, any of whom could make a breakthrough.
I wouldn’t turn my nose up at adding a talented forward but it would mean pushing Gervinho and Chamberlain further away from the reckoning, two very talented players who we invested considerable funds to bring to the club.

I reckon you are onto something – the comparison with a younger Rooney or a not bitey Suarez is quite apt.
And you may well be right in your reasoning about a midfielder rather than a forward, I was just thinking that one striker/attacking midfielder might be let go. And yes, if it isn’t going to be Le Coq, we could do with a mini-Mikel.

I too have thought that Chamberlain could end up as a striker.
As the season has progressed there have also been signs that he’d be happy in midfield too. Remember the second goal in the Norwich Home game, I think? From about the halfway line Chamberlain played a one two with a teammate who was somewhere inside rightish, and then another two or three ‘give and goes’ with others, moving himself across the pitch all the while. The final return from Carzola was perfect, inviting Chamberlain to change the tempo of the move and burst into the left hand side of the Norwich area, which he did, and to get the assist for the goal. It was a really nice goal, great teamwork & skill.
He can play where he wants! But if he wants to play alongside Rambo & Little Jack in the future in the team that the selfish and demented L’Scrooge has been building for his successor (& hopefully for another few seasons of himself too!) he might have to play as a forward.
Rambo, little Jack, Jenkinson, Chamberlain and some others. These players never represented the end of an era, with panic buys (dont laugh im only quoting the Truthers) like Arteta, Carzola and Mertesacker to guide them they are the foundation for the next.
